Street Fighter IV - Gen Discussion & Info

From Capcom-Unity:

To unlock Akuma as a playable character:

1. Unlock Cammy, Fei Long, Dan, Sakura, Rose, and Gen.

2. Pick a character you have already used to beat Arcade Mode.

3. Win all your matches without continuing and without losing any rounds before fighting with Seth.

4. You need to get at least one "perfect" win in a round, and more than one depending on how many rounds per match you are playing.

- 1 round match: 1 perfect round or more

- 3 round match: 2 perfect rounds or more

- 5 round match: 3 perfect rounds or more

- 7 round match: 4 perfect rounds or more

(including the last battle against Seth)

5. If you meet these conditions, Akuma will appear. Defeat him to unlock Akuma as a selectable character.

To unlock Gouken as a playable character:

1. Complete Arcade Mode playing as Akuma and watch (not necessary to watch everything) an ending.

2. Then, unlock Gouken as an opponent, and defeat him.

Necessary conditions to unlock Gouken as an opponent:

- Play with any characters with which you watched the ending once (so play using a character you have already beaten the game with)

- Do not continue at all.

- Do not lose at all. Not even one round (easier if you only play 1-round matches)

- Achieve certain number (or more) of "Perfect" rounds. The number of Perfect Win you need to achieve are:

If you play on

- 1 round match: 1 time or more

- 3 round match: 2 times or more

- 5 round match: 3 times or more

- 7 round match: 4 times or more

- Achieve a certain number (or more) of Super Combo -OR- Ultra Combo Finishes. Super and Ultra finishes both count toward this number. The number of super/ultra finishes you need to achieve are:

If you play on

- 1 round match: 3 times or more

- 3 round match: 5 times or more

- 5 round match: 7 times or more

- 7 round match: 9 times or more

- Achieve certain number (or more) of First Attack (this means you must score the first strike in a match--the screen gives you the "First Attack" message, and you can mostly do this without even noticing):

The number of First Attack you need to achieve are:

If you play on

- 1 round match: 5 times or more

- 3 round match: 10 times or more

- 5 round match: 15 times or more

- 7 round match: 20 times or more

- Then Gouken will appear. Kick his butt to unlock him!

That's the official word.

Is it a sqaure gate? If so sounds like you're expecting to hit a corner on the front end of it so you're either going to DF or UF and not F. QCF/QCB are definitely the biggest movements to adjust to on a square gate.

At the risk of sounding like an elitist snob, Why are casual fighting game fans buying arcade sticks? Keep in mind I don't know exactly who this refers to in this thread, so I'm not pointing fingers, just curious.

I think I'm probably a borderline casual (love SF and Tekken, also play a tiny bit of VF). The reason I'm getting one is cuz I want to get better but I'm limited by the 360 pad.

So my new Blanka tactics are mediocre at best I seemingly won the same amount of games I was already.

I am at the level where everyone even the Ken/Ryu players are damn good and I cant seem to find a good middle ground. Does anyone know if Blanka has a instant move like the Shinruken? That alone would most likely double my wins.

How did you know I was there...unless...what were you doing there? Hear that everyone PhrostByte looks at gamefaqs, pfft loser!

*Sneaks out the back.

Oh, one question though. You said that Blanka was trash in HD Remix. Why? Maybe thats what I am not seeing. Since I just came to SF4 by passing most of the other ones when apparently he was worse I guess I am not seeing the upgrade.

Although...I cant dream him being weaker than he is now so I tip my hat to Pre - SF4 Blanka players.

He had way too many bad match-ups in Remix. Also, his moves were unsafe. In SFIV, you can pretty much ball all day. Anyway, you wanna see my Blanka? Add me I'll hop on.

Sorry, should've been more specific. I'm referring to people who are buying it soley for SFIV. I know two guys already who want to invest in one, plus I'm sure there's a few people in this thread like that as well.

ive been wanting to invest in one since Third Strike but my friend had two SF anniv sticks and we just played that way. I still want one for it and for Soul Calibur IV and Virtua Fighter V.

Since reading that Arcade stick thread going on....i think i want to take a SE stick mod with Sanwa JLF and get Seimetsu buttons.....it will probably cost as much as a TE stick but atleast i get the fun job of actually opening up and working on it.

The way I'd look at it is if I'm going to spend 40+ hours with the game it'll be worth the money even if that's spread out over a couple months. Otherwise I'm not going to be able to do much and will have better success playing Rock Band without any instruments.

Alright Byte just beat my ass with his Blanka vs mine.

He was playing a lot more aggressive than I would ever with blanka so maybe I should adopt that instead of mine counter measure way.

Why do people ask for the entire match if you have a mic when there's no icon in the lobby? Lot of people being little punks setting the time way down and to one round. Makes me glad to beat them.

It's interesting trying out Rose, she's so different from the other shotos. Have to keep enough distance you can react with Soul Throw if they jump in since she has no overhead.

Yeah, I noticed that early on. People wanting to play 1 round...I figured they were all spammers so I avoid them like the plague.

The online is really starting to grind my nerves though. It takes entirely way to long to find a match.

I like to play 1 round, probably because i have a better chance at winning then. I dont spam moves either.

This game is really good, and i like it. But as a casual gamer it is kind of depressing knowing i wont be able to unlock any icons via trails, and i win about 25% of the time online. I constantly get matched up against these guys that just tear me up. Even though i put to find people near my skill level. Then once in a great while i actually get someone near my skill and we have a good match. But its rare. My record is 40 wins 95 losses. I have 364 BP and constantly get people in the 1,000-3,000 range. I just wish there was more challenges, or side stuff to do.

you're telling me you can actually USE the dpad to pull off specials? I've been using the analog stick, and the only thing i have trouble doing are the double quarter circle specials.

I feel you; I fucking suck at this game, even worse than you for sure. However I don't see how I could get any better unless someone taught me. I can't even beat the 3rd tier of the normal trials for any characters. It's like the combo I need to do is right there, but i still can't do it!

I just got done playing online where I went like 0-20 and won one round the entire time. I use Chun-li and I have a good grasp on her moves, but I still just get owned all the time. Like you thought everyone I play has tons of BP when I have non and I put priority on finding folks near my skill.

It's depressing to suck so bad at a game. lol

It really is man. The least they could have done was made some of the icons unlock for beating normal trails, but no you need to beat normal and expert trials. BTW i suck with chun li. I cant even get past her 2nd Trial i think. Ive just been sticking with Sakura cos im pretty good with her.

Sorry guys, but the trials are there for the experts at SF. I don't feel that there's any less to do for someone in this game. There's so much and with practice, anyone can get the trials at some point. I have friends that have cleared hard trials and we're all hardcore SF gamers. I can't even do most of the hards, just depends on the character.

You should try doing Bison's trials. His are easier imo, although im stuck at trial 5. Fyi i haven't gotten past #3 on any other character, so Im fairly certain we're in the same boat here.

Well the bison/balrog/guile types are hard sometimes. Sometimes they are too hard to combo with their specials. Ive went through all of the characters, and the only ones ive finished all 5 in normal are Sakura, Ryu, Sagat. I think maybe another one but i dont remember. But their hard levels are really tough.

well for the normal trials, i believe whenever they want you to do a special in a combo its easiest to not use the heavy button. im not even sure if some of them are possible with heavy special, since i can't pull it off unless i do mid or light.

really? do you have to change the display type to see that? because sometimes it just says "knee press" for example, and im left to just guess which one to do.

Well if you press back/select it tells you the move inputs and the ones that are specific to light/medium/heavy would say like "Light Soul Spiral".

are you talking about hard trial 5 or normal?

Normal Trial 5 is all about chaining single attack together. Its not too difficult if you slow yourself down. Dont mash, try to hit dan just as he is recovering from the first hit. U wanna hit that second attack as late as possible...it chains that way. Being slow makes you quick... if that makes any sense.

Trial 5 for bison wasn't too bad. Trial 4 was more of a struggle imo. j.mk > cr.lk > cr.lp > cr.mk > heavy scissor kicks if i remember correctly. practice the cr.lk>cr.lp>cr.mk until its a done deal. then add in the SK at the end and u should have it in no time.

Well this is nice. Been playing ranked matches for the last hour or so as Rose and felt like I was losing a ton, which I probably was, but my win percentage never the less has climbed about a percent and a half. Would have done even better but lost a number from way ahead not knowing exactly how to deal with some of the cheese with her. Think I'm gonna go ahead and order my buttons and go with a Rose themed stick.

Hey 7th think you can tell me how to do that fake kick that Sagat has? I can't get passed the 1st trial because either I'm not doing it right or the 360 controller won't allow me to do it.

No... I use the analog stick.
Random question... for anybody that bought the CE version, was the soundtrack CD in the "The Tie That Binds" case and the "TTTB" movie in the game case? Just wondering if it was random w/ mine or if that was the normal way they shipped it.
Yeah, I asked this last week but no one said anything. I was kind of worried at first because I thought I didn't get the soundtrack when I opened the game case first and just saw the movie...figured I was given two copies of the movie on accident. Fortunately that was not the case.
Level 3 of all the normal trials is about learning which attacks can be canceled. Some moves can be canceled in the middle of its animation with another attack resulting in a combo. After you do the first move you have to do the button combination for the next move in the middle of the animation to execute the next attack
I figured my issue is due to the timing of the cancel on those combos, but trying to learn how to do it properly on the 360 d-pad sure isn't helping.

I've seen people say just jam on the HK button as fast as possible when you are standing there - I tried for like 5 minutes and got nowhere. However, I tried jumping straight up (not at an angle) and then jamming on HK as soon as I landed and I got it on my first try.

Just re-map high kick to Y or one of the other face buttons and use your best button mashing. You'll get it no problem.
Rose's ultra us deadly. It will hit as long as the person is within range, regardless of what they are doing.
It's blockable.
True, but you grab a shoto out of a fireball/dp with it
That's true of most Ultras, although some will whiff on an airborne opponent. There's almost always frames of invincibility on startup.

What I used is RT for HK (or LK+MK+HK) and took my right hand middle finger and index finger and flicked/slapped them at the rt so it would hit twice
pick up the pace on that rolling/flicking action and you should be able to pull it off no problem. Its one of the dumbest moves that im sure no1 will use just because of the amount of pain it brings to learn & pull off.
