Street Fighter IV - Gen Discussion & Info
Anybody have problems with Gouken blocking Ultras online? Everytime I try to do an Ultra with Sagat on Gouken, no matter how open or close I am they are able to block it.
It's like that for all characters and ultras lol. Ultras are very easy to block if you just do them randomly. Sometimes you'll get lucky and it'll connect but more often than not you're just going to get punished. You can find a way to combo into Ultras but this can be hard. Usually your best bet for landing an Ultra is after a focus attack that leaves them crumpled. Or after your opponents failed random ultra :p. Any other attack that takes a long time to recover from will do too.

I'm having problems with my fightpad already. I say about 50 hours of use and now it's disconnecting from the 360 even though the usb is connected. Sometimes the character starts moving back on there own even though my d-pad is neutral. All is well after I disconnect the USB and reconnect, but damn madcatz is really living up to their name again. Hope to see another shipment soon, so I can just exchange it without sending it in for warranty down the line.

I've played 72:xx hours of this game and it's still fun. Damn song!

I created a "reduced ink" printable movelist for all the characters if anyone is looking for one:

sf4listshot.jpg

http://espion4ge.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/sf4_pmovelist.pdf

it's 9 pages with about 3 characters per page, but if you print them double sided it comes out to 5 pages total.

Looking for some evened out competition, I'm at around 1100 BP, but that's useless information.

I guess I'm alright, either way, just add me on Live, we'll play a few. Just looking for fun!

Might be better to post your winning %? I know i hang around 30%. But most of my matches have been in ranked online.
Anyone else running into a lot of spammers the same fucking cheap combos over and over? It's really starting to piss me off :bomb:.
Be cheaper.

break them and punish them. thats what i do to the SHotos when they fireball spam. once you break their pattern. thats it they get flustered and have no idea what to do next.

What I tend to do is, find out where they live and PUNCH THEM IN DA FAICE. and when I can't find out where they live, I jump just out of Shoryuken/Tiger Uppercut/Tatsumaki range, and use a lunging special. then I just try to keep them in close combat distance.

I always have problems jumping over their fireballs. :(

Anyway. Can someone explain how to FX Focus Cancel? I believe its done by pressing MP+MK twice really fast. in fact i can get it to register in one of Akumas hard trials. Yet i cant get the move after that to register. Which is where i need help.

I made more progress today in Trials. but these EX Focus Cancels are giving me problems.

My updated Trials checklist

Well its the first akuma hard trial so you can do that one. ;) Unless you are waiting to complete the normal ones first.

Is anyone having trouble getting matches online? I usually just create a ranked match of my own. Before last night, I would get matched up with someone no problem. Now however, I'm lucky if I get one.

What am I doing wrong? I haven't changed any settings

Been having issues getting in games lately if I do quick matches.

naw i finished all the normal trials. i just been waiting on doing the hard ones. from what i understand an EX Focus Cancel is doing a focus attack right after the special move (ex focus) but to cancel u need to dash(cancel) out of it...which is where it gets hard.

so pretty much on Ken's hard trial 1
light shoryuken > Forward + Focus Attack > Forward > Ultra Combo

that dash/cancel isn't too bad to do....doing moves out of the dash is definitely gonna take some work.

Try creating yours, because I'm having luck with quick match, haha
Anyway. Can someone explain how to FX Focus Cancel? I believe its done by pressing MP+MK twice really fast. in fact i can get it to register in one of Akumas hard trials. Yet i cant get the move after that to register. Which is where i need help.
an EX Focus Cancel is performing a focus attack to cancel out the recovery of a move.

for example, with any character go up to your opponent and hit fierce punch, the moment the move connects hit MP+MK and you will cancel the recovery of the fierce punch into a Focus Attack.

the applications for this move come into play when you remember that you can dash cancel out of a focus attack, thus allowing you to either safely recover from certain moves that can be punished if blocked, or by allowing you to extend your combo by resetting your character to a neutral state ready to attack even more.

it's very similar to Roman Cancelling in the Guilty Gear series

Focus Attack cancelling is when you dash out of the focus attack. It's used in combos because you can cancel out of a special with focus attack, and then dash cancel out of the focus attack to link attacks further into the combo.

this site does a decent job at explaining it and gives an example in the video http://thirdworldgamer.blogspot.com/2009/02/street-fighter-iv-focus-attack-dash.html

*edit* Jekki beat me to it :)

I actually have a madcatz controller (not a fightpad...just a regular controller.) What makes the fightpads good? Is it just the uhh... control pad? I mean when you google it the only difference appears to be that it has 6 buttons on the front instead of 4.

its definitley the D-Pad. I have never tried one...but i guess its more accurate than the 360 d-pad. i have instances on a 360 pad where i want to dash forward but he will jump. I dont think that problem exists with the fight pad.

im waiting for my tax return so i can finally purchase a stick and mod it.

The dpads are better. Also, since its 6 buttons you can do throws and focus attacks better without have a weird button mapping.
What are the strategies for exactly?
They are tips/strategies/combos for the game. I think they might be from the Prima guide out but I'm not sure so thats why I'm asking. I heard the Prima guide wasn't all that special.

Honestly, why bother? That kind of stuff should be readily available online. Not to mention if you're talking multiplayer, different people have different play styles.

Those startegies and tips should be on YouTube or other site where you can watch them for frees streaming.

Yeah sure Capcom can ask Youtube to remove the videos sure.

But will they ask the 200 other Youtube clone sites that carry streaming videos

Since many of us have Street Fighter on the brains right now, here's a review of Udon's animated Street Fighter comic DVD.

This is my first experience with animated comics. The art is spectacular. There is a fair amount of animation, such as a character flying across the screen when he kicks, debris flying around, or Ryu's headband waving in the air. The characters' mouths don't move though. Still, thanks to the option to watch it with or without voice bubbles, this is practically like watching a cartoon. The story is very mature and well-written, much better than any of the Street Fighter animes in my opinion. Characters from Street Fighter 2, 4, and Alpha all make appearances.

My one major criticism is the voice acting. The actors are all terrible and they mispronounce virtually every name and special move (Gouken's name sounding the worst). Ken's wife Eliza has been given a phony southern accent for no discernible reason, but at least her voice actor is actually a female. If I had to choose between the animated Watchmen comic's single voice actor or a bunch of crummy voice actors, I'd go with Street Fighter's janitors, I mean actors. The sound effects and music are good, thankfully.

I recommend this for people who want to see the comic brought to life or just Street Fighter fans in general.

Thanks for the info. The male narrator in the Watchmen animated comic killed it for me as I was really digging it up until he did his female voice. They really should have added a female narrator for those parts and redo part one when they were releasing these as they had the time since the releases were so staggered.

Do the Challenges->Trials.

Take advantage of the extremely good trials in this game. Do a couple of those and you should get an idea of which combos/attacks should be your bread and butter then expand upon them with jabs and jump ins.

Anyone tried uploading this to their 360 hard drive? Does it help at all? I notice this disk is a little louder or makes different sounds then most. Lost Planet did the same thing, as did AC...so some disks are just weird. Also, I don't want the disk to get wrecked or anything, so this would probably save it from any damage. BTW how many gigs did it take up? I have the small HD.

Couldn't tell you if it helps because I install every game I play a lot on my HD. Prolly about 6 gigs of space like most games.

I've actually never installed a game to my HD, but does it actually require no disc after, or does the disc still have to be in the console? I guess logically it would require the disc, otherwise everyone would rent and upload lol. Anyway I should be able to free up 6 gigs even on my small HD...
So far its really fun, but the text on my SDTV is impossible to read during trials and seeing movesets and stuff...also, any tips on some of the basics? Like when to do heavy/medium/light punches and kicks and how or if you can combo these together into some kind of chain...

still needs a disc just for proof of ownership.

From what ive read, all you need is a SVR09 save file on your hard drive. Heard it from gamingring.com which was just at a LOWM preview event.

What?

Ha, ya, what is right :p. I tried installing it - 5.7GB to install. Is it normal for the disc to make weird grinding type noises while the installation takes place? I cancelled it after hearing some of this and nothing happened to the disc just to be safe.

I dont know about a grinding sound, but it does spin the disc pretty fast while its installing.
I do install all my games and the biggest thing is no having to hear your 360.
As a matter a fact, the power brick is louder than the 360.

Back on topic, the hard trials are a pain in the ass. And I suck at charge characters, can't even complete some of their normals.

Do the hard trials teach you some combos or something? I mean, I know how to punch by pressing a button...but it seems like people can link together these moves. Only played the game for like 1 hour so far, lol...tried multi and got beat pretty bad. Came close to beating this dan guy then he did like these 2 super or ultra moves in a row and it was game over xD

You got beat by a joke character D:

Hard trials won't teach you anything directly. It'll let you know what's possible and how to do the moves but then it's up to you to figure out the timing to link them all together.

Hey, lol...it was like my 2nd match ever online for a fighter and I knew no combos at all. Dan seemed good haha...he could keep doing all these ultras and supers non stop. Are they even blockable or avoidable? I'd be knocked down, then an ultra, then game over.
I was fighting this gouken guy and suddenly with Abel as I button mashed I managed to do this glowing uppercut, followed by this sweet combo then a grab at the waist where you rush him into a wall. It was pretty cool...wish I knew what I did there :p

Another thing - for those using controllers, what is your button layout?

For the last several weekends I've been bringing SFIV into work so a couple of friends and I can play during some down time. None of them are fighting game fans in the least, but eveyone has grown to love it. They look forward to it every weekend now. One of them came up to me just now while I walked into work saying after he went home last night he was wanting to play.

I gotta hand it to SFIV, it's got that "it" factor that draws people to it. Been a few years since I've played a fighting game with a large group of people who are really into it.
