I don't know how common this was known, but Subway has actually shrunk the size of their sandwiches to coincide with the $5 footlong deal.
They're still footlongs, y'know - but they portions of meat they put on them shrunk by 1-2 pieces for cold cuts, and an ounce or two for chicken/steak/tuna/whatever.
I noticed this yesterday when I ordered a club and, even though it's been awhile since I ate there, they put two fewer slices of roast beef on it. So I nicely asked about it, starting with the safe assumption that, as a Subway employee, the person making my sandwich was a blithering idiot of Faulknerian proportions.
No, as it turns out, I was wrong. Subway corporate has redrawn sandwich portions to be smaller. As they told me, the footlong roast beef gets a whopping 4 (count 'em! 4!) slices on it.
So, it's still alright. It's still Subway - but be armed with knowledge as a shopper that they're not giving you the same sandwich for $5.
