Surprisingly The Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck Pt. 2

saw avatar sober a couple weeks ago and thought it was great (terrible script but who cares), just bought tickets for a noon showing on monday, me & a friend are gonna each eat a gram before going... i'm expecting it to be the greatest movie experience of all time.

both times will be IMAX, though different theatres. the first one i saw it on wasnt a curved screen, my roommate works at the theatre i'm going to this time and she said the screens are curved, so i think it's gonna be different somehow.
Just saw Mighty Ducks for the first time. Awesome movie. Pretty sure my life would be very different if I had seen it 10 years ago...
Mine would have been better if I didn't watch D2 sixteen years ago.

Daybreakers - so so.....wasnt bad but nothing great

Cold Souls - I love Paul Giamatti but I just couldn't make it through the movie...i lost interest 30 minutes in. Probably had something to do with being crazy tired but I dont see myself trying to watch it again

The Wolfman - Really good. The gore was great and the story was cool and different than the original. I'm not sure why so many people are shitting on this.

SAW VI

I'm pretty much just watching it for the gore now... This one didn't disappoint. Especially not the ending... yum!

avatar again, and this time it sucked

both times were IMAX 3D... but the first time, one lens was red and one lens was blue (or maybe yellow, i don't recall)... and the color in the movie looked good. this time, the lenses both looked grey, and the movie looked like it was being viewed through lightly tinted sunglasses.

the other thing that sucked this time, we sat a little further back, and the things that were supposed to be near the viewer was just blurry. like, the first time, at the beginning where jake is waking up from the cryo bed and there are water droplets in the air above him, the first time they were crisp and clear but this time the droplets were each two separate semi-seethrough circles, like terribly focused.

the sound was also inferior, but that wasn't as big of a deal as the video. it's sad to know "IMAX" isn't enough information to know whether or not the movie will be technically impressive... and one thing i learned for sure, get there early and sit in the middle.
It sucks to think how much money Camron is making off this movie... ugh.
I still can't believe that the dude who made Terminator and Aliens does this tripe now. Yuck.

BUT IT HAS BLUE PEOPLE AND EXPLOSIONS AND BLAH BLAH BLAH BEST MOVIE EVARZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, every time somebody proclaims Avatar as the best movie ever, a little of me dies inside.

Black Dynamite - 4/5 so awesome. I didn't expect it to be as good as it was.

I Sell The Dead - 3/5 a very forgetable horror film. It has a decent cast and characters are unique and weird but doesn't do much with them. Ends up being an ordinary comedy/horror film.

fuck that shit. Watch Dolemite 2: The Human Tornado. And wear a diaper because you will piss yourself laughing.

thanks to crunchb3rry's recommendation watched Dolemite 2: The Human Tornado after viewing Black Dynamite.

The Human Tornado - 3/5 - First off I am a bit new to the whole blaxploitation scene. The Human Tornado is a ridiculous movie where Dolemite is on a quest to beat the shit out of some white guys for stealing his friends bitches. The first 25-30minutes of the film are hysterical. You learn about Dolemite, white people crash a black party & a car chase which had my friends and I laughing throughout. A good deal of action happens later in the film which is as humorous as the beginning of the film. All the combat is sped up to make it either look quick/fluid or to hide the poor hand to hand skill...but either way the combat is very hysterical to watch.

The manner in which Dolemite fights his opponents is so ridiculous, I started to think if it was possible for kids to see this movie and mimic him on the streets. He makes this whining noise like a kungfu fighter and does this snake like movement to his head that needs to be seen...its just so funny. The middle of the film dragged on a bit with an investigation and build up to saving the climax of saving these two girls. I did find Dolemite to move along at a pretty brisk pace which most blaxploitation films don't do. Definitely an enjoyable watch. The writing in the film is top notch essecially coming off of Black Dynamite. Loved the humor. Gonna have to find Dolemite 1 since I heard its equally ridiculous w/ more atrocious hand to hand combat.

definitely. Its hard to miss the one black man who had a career after Dolemite 2.

I was gonna amend my review to add I was slightly disappointed by his name being 'the human tornado'. I get that he was a tornado in sack but I wanted him to do some whirl wind ass kicking. the movie poster for the film has Dolemite w/ both arms extended to his sides spinning like a top. That could have been awesome. I also hoped for more 'instant replay' moments because that sorta stuff always gets me to laugh.

Sooooooooooooooo after watching the latest Star Trek movie....I remember why I didn't like it as much as other people.

I'm not putting tags on...I think the statute of limitations is over for this one.

First:
What timeline is Nero from? I refuse to believe that he'd be SO conveniently close to Romulus since everyone knew Romulus was in huge danger from the supernova. The only reason I can think of for him to be that close was to intercept Spock in the first place...meaning he was from another timeline and already knew what was going to happen to Romulus so placed himself at the moment he could confront Spock? The movie also states that Nero called himself the last of the Romulan empire...how could he have known that just seconds after Romulus was destroyed? He was so certain that there were absolutely no other Romulans at all? Also, if the galaxy knew that Romulus was in huge peril...why no effort to evacuate? By that I mean...from what I can tell, Nero's ship was just full of Nero's men. No women, children, etc. I would've assumed that he would've tried to save people with his ship given that the entire movie is driven upon his vengeance for wife, unborn child and his planet. If he happen to be just that close to the planet conveniently..that makes even less sense that there are no other survivors.

Second:
While Nero waited 25 years for Spock to re-appear in his timeline, why was he so eager to attack the USS Kelvin? According to Spock, while Nero waited 25 years for Spock to appear in his timeline, Spock said that it was merely seconds before he saw Nero's ship again...so keeping that in mind, wouldn't it make sense that it only took Nero seconds to travel into the timeline that the movie takes place and meet up with the Kelvin? Nero went from wanting to kill Spock just prior to wanting to wipe out all of Starfleet just seconds later, even though it wasn't Starfleet that promised to save Romulus, it was the Vulcans alone through their science academy dealie.

Third:
The goddamn time portal is never explained. Why would the singularity caused by the red matter destroy and dismantle entire planets...but ships can freely move through it and happen to land in some other timeline?

I'm not hating on the film, I actually really want to like this movie, and its very good....save for the plot that's really nagging at me because well in the end...it doesn't make much sense. And since the movie actually relies pretty heavily on the plot, that makes it even more bothersome.

only tools hate avatar. go into it with an open mind and there's a lot to appreciate. i wouldn't call it best movie ever, but i wouldn't call anything best movie ever. i definitely approve of it getting best picture nom.

of course, as always, anyone reading a dissenting opinion will assume the dissenter simply 'doesnt understand'... look, i think i have a pretty good idea of what the haters dislike about it. it's so cliche that it feels like a caricature of a blockbuster movie. really, the whole script just screams "stock". it's intellectually shallow, at times frustratingly bad (the attempted parallel to the war on terror? dammit cameron). but in the end, it's just an enjoyable spectacle of a movie. it's like an amusement park ride: it's an escape, it's made to thrill. in that sense, i consider it more similar to jurassic park than any other film i've seen: it's just a well-made spectacle movie that presents a consistent, interesting fictional world. if you can't appreciate that, well, maybe your time would be better spent reading up on some philosophy rather than ragging on people for enjoying a shallow movie.

I definitely think its a very good movie, I just think its ridiculous that people feel the need to use so much hyperbole when they describe it. Even if the plot is as generic of a Pocahontas rip-off as you can get, its absolutely stunning visually, and deserves just about every A/V Oscar there is.

Avatar fans make me hate Avatar the movie. I mean internet threads where people talk about being depressed because the real world doesn't stack up to Avatar world?

Look, I'm a huge Star Wars nerd but I sure as shit don't look at my car and then go online to complain that is isn't Darth Vader's Tie Fighter.

It's pretty silly to let the fanatics affect your opinion of the movie. I mean I'm a star wars fan too, but any Stars Wars forum I could find would be full of loserific posts that make me ashamed to have anything in common with those folk.

Any popular movie etc. will have a cult full of losers obsessing over it. No need to let that lessen your enjoyment. Just watch movies and enjoy them and spend less time discussing them online etc.--has done wonders for my enjoyment of movies.

Event Horizon - 3/5 - Pretty decent sci-fi movie. I haven't played Dead Space but everyone seems to compare the two. There are some good moments of gore, a majority of it showing up as pictures flashing quickly across the screen. The story is pretty interesting at the beginning. A rescue crew lead by Laurence Fishburne is sent out to investigate what happened to a missing ship. A ship that had disappeared for 7 years. Once it is revealed what happened, I lost a bit of interest. I guess I went into Event Horizon hoping for a monster film and instead I got a psychological thriller. The special effects do look pretty dated..but for a movie 13 years old they are really good. The sound in the film is also good with loads of heavy hitting bass during the suspenseful scenes. Overall Event Horizon is a good movie..just not my favorite type of sci-fi film.

The time travelers wife - it was actually pretty decent. Better than I expected. also Rachel mcadams is drop dead gorgeous.

Where the wild things are - wasn't what I expected at all. Was dissappointed at first but once you forget about the book and what you think about it and accept max's point of view it is actually a touching movie.

Grace - 3/5
Some films try to be disturbing by putting some graphic imagines on the screen. Other films just have such a disturbing concept that will make you feel discomfort. Grace is one of those films. A preggo woman gives birth to a dead baby which somehow is still alive and something isn't right with the child. There are some f'd up moments in Grace which you definitely wont see in any other film.
At one point the grandmom has the granddad suck her breast like a baby...yeah weird I know...

The story progresses just as expected with not any twists or turns. There is a pretty funny side plot with the preggos friend purchasing an RV. That story line with the RV will yield the most laughs in the film. There isn't any unexpected scares in Grace, so you can sit back and just enjoy the suspenseful buildups. Grace doesn't really do anything new or extreme for horror. The acting is decent, the film is shot pretty average with a few weird edits but nothing to distract you from the experience.

American Beauty- Absolutely wonderful. I think people will still be talking about this one 10-20+ years down the road.

Shutter Island- a very good movie with an incredible performance by Leonardo DiCaprio. However, it doesn't quite reach the level of the book (then again, when's the last time that's happened?)

Legion - it was ok.....it could have been so badass but wasnt....lots of shit didnt make sense (they didnt explain a whole big portion of the movie)

Agreed. Thought this was going to be a good movie, turned out to be crap.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief -- It wasn't that bad of a movie. And I think what aided it is that I am replaying through the God of Wars so I was into the mythological background.
Shutter Island was a total mindfuck. I wish I'd read the book, but it's on my short list to read.
Do it. It's incredibly satisfying to watch when you know everything that happens. There are a lot of moments that you will be going "OH!!!!". Good times. It was great to see it with my friend who had no idea what to expect, who was totally stunned.

Black Dynamite-

Absolutely fucking hilarious. Old school 70's Blaxploitation mixed with kung fu parodying both. Completely ridiculous and over the top. Reminds me a lot of HotD: Overkill, which I loved.

mild example without spoiling too much is when
Black Dynamite pimp slaps Patricia Nixon.

Just hit DVD, highly highly recommened.

Because it's crap and you're only deluding yourself. I saw this last year at a "private screening" in Vegas (you can find out tidbits about it on the net) by Warner, in which everybody left the theatre disappointed and basically said how much they hated. I heard that since then they've yet again edited the film to try to make it better, if that's possible, but the entire things a turd and makes look down on Benicio del Toros acting. Also, it seems like a lot of Hollywood's true actors who can act, i.e. Ben Kingsley and Anthony Hopkins, seem to be loving taking on these shitty ass roles for a quick buck. At least Michael Caine still appeases.

Anyway, went and saw Shutter Island. Could have seen it at an advance screening elsewhere, but was busy so went and so it with some friends. Absolutely awesome. The reviewers are going to hate themselves this weekend/down the line in the future. This was an exceptional film that hearkens back to many of the great noir masterpieces that, to any film lover, are fairly evident and easy to pick up. It's reminded me of Tarantino's work where you can always pick up nuanced homages to other works. also, loved all the red herrings in the film. I picked up on several throughout the film, but unlike Sherlock Holmes, some definitely through me for a loop. Another great work from a living legend of film.

cirque du freak vampires assistant - meh...i watched it cause john c reilly was in it. the main character looks so much like ashton kutcher that it was actually bothering me during the movie

Ninja Assassin - fucking awesome. I went into this movie not giving 2 shits about a story and hoping for nothing but absolutely bat shit crazy ninja fighting bloody goodness and that is exactly what i got.
Shutter Island - Fantastic, but I'm so confused with the ending.
What part?

Obviously do not click if you haven't seen the movie.

His final quote "Is it better to die a good man, or live life as a monster?"

Right, I don't know if
He really did kill his wife and acted like he was still a Marshall on purpose in order to die, or if they were really messing with him and he didn't want to give in so he willingly went with it
