Surprisingly The Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck Pt. 2

Jennifer's Body... so I had NO EXPECTATION going in and this movie was surprisingly GOOD! Megan Fox, the wacky premise, Juno's dad (aka J. Jonah Jameson), the FX, White Lies "Death", and Amanda S made this flick for me.

(500) Days of Summer - My wife rented this movie and I wasn't sure what to expect. Ended up really enjoying it. As the narrator states at the beginning, "This is not a love story."
The Men Who Stare at Goats - 2/5 - Plot? Missing. A few laughs here and there but overall just not that enjoyable.
This is exactly how I feel about The Men Who Stare at Goats.

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus -- 3/5

a good mindfuck is fine and swell but Imaginarium was just a big convoluted headache for no reason

it was still cool at times though

I finally saw Ponyo. Man, the animation was... AWESOME!
I felt the film was a little lacking, but I guess I shouldn't, considering the film is made to behave like Totoro.
Ninja Assassins - 6/10

Ugh... I put wayyyyyyy too much expectations into this movie. My only hope now is that it's visually better on Blu Ray.
It kinda didn't help. It made the blood splatter that much worse I'm afraid. I'm all for gratuitous blood and gore, hell I even tried to look at this as a live action Ninja Gaiden, but it's just not working for me. I guess maybe it's the bad story line or something... Also, I know it's a movie but... seriously a body can only sustain so many hits before it stop functioning. lol

Evil Dead 2 - I'm not sure what I was expecting from this. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't excited, either. I knew it was supposed to be more of a comedy than a horror movie, but it wasn't that funny, and it wasn't that scary, either. Dang it. I really liked the first one, too. Army of Darkness was just okay.
Clash of the Titans (in 3D) - the best part of the film was when I took a 15 min nap
Yep. This movie sucked.

Clash of the Titans is a truly epic POS. I was glad I got to see it for free, but I still felt ripped off. Avoid like the plague. Greenberg was great though.

The Road. Just finished reading the book and was really interested to see how they made it into a film. Not nearly as good as the book, but still very good.

Clash of The Titans was a really really average movie. Nothing special, perhaps worth seeing for $3.50, which is what I paid.

How To Train Your Dragon is terrific.

Clash of the Titans - 3/5 - I do believe this movie is a average film if its not seen in 3d. If you do go to see it in 3d like I did... its awful. The 3d effects that were done in post production are so poor. I read somewhere that Clash of the Titans was intended to be 2d up until the recent 3d movie boom where it was decided to be '3d just to be 3d'. It was rushed and it definitely shows. There are a handful of times where the 3d effect literally distorts some characters. Most often this occurs with Ralph Fiennes as Hades. They try to 'pull' his body/face to the foreground while keeping everything else in the background to give it that 3d sense of depth. What they did do is 'pull' part of his face but his ears/hair are still in the bg...so it look off. So yeah....Clash of the Titans has the worst 3d effects I have seen recently. It made me think half way through the film if I even liked 3d all that much anymore.

The story is definitely run of the mill. You aren't going to take anything away from the story but I thought the action was enjoyable and moments of mindless fun. Sam Worthington is starting to just play Sam Worthington. I am not sure why he doesn't drop his accent for his performances. Anyways solid acting across the board. Some of the writing is a little cheesy/on the nose but its a PG13 film so you sorta expect that going into it.

If you need to see this movie, dont see it in 3d. It definitely ruins the experience of the film. Definitely not worth going to the theater and seeing. Check it out on dvd if you are interested in a mediocre action/adventure. I do think some people will enjoy the film because there are some fun combat sections and the greek lore.
@all the Clash of the Titan comments: ouch... :(
If you watched the trailer and thought "this looks awesome", you'll probably have a great time. It is what it is. I'd say about 2-2.5/4.

Brothers....from the trailers I expected it to be about Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhal building to a confrontation after Tobey comes back....only to find he doesn't come back until, like, the last twenty minutes. Still an okay flick though.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Daaaaayum! So many things to like! Marisa Tomei's boobs all over the place, a harrowing Shakespeare-esque downward spiral, some great acting, Marisa Tomei's boobs. Seriously though, it's like a less "yelly" Reservoir Dogs crossed with Requiem for a Dream plus some random Memento. 8/10.

Triangle - 3/5 - Psychological thriller. Girl played by Melissa George, goes on a boat with friends and finds herself stuck in the Bermuda Triangle. The boat has some problems and they are forced on to another boat ....which puts them in greater risk. Not much of a spoiler since the box art shows it, but the girl is stalked by a man in a burlap sack.

Since I dont wanna spoil what the movie is about, how the movie plays out is pretty fun. Triangle did have my friend and I talking throughout the film about 'if this happens then that can't happen' or figuring out what is possible in this world that Triangle creates. Its very much a psychological thriller than a horror film...even though it seemed to be praised by the most of the horror movie websites which is why I had to see it. There isn't much gore but a bit of blood in the film. Overall I find Triangle to be an interesting movie, its not the best thriller/horror film but I did find it more interesting than The Bug if thats worth anything.

Its ones of the streaming titles on netflix for those who have it.

Too many past films (huge movie fan here), so I'm not going to get into it - maybe at a later point.

Just saw Clash of the Titans 2010 - Wow, boy did that blow. I'm glad I hesitated and went for the 2d version of the film. I would have hated myself that much more for paying up to see this crap. So much is missing from the film. I think any fan of greek mythology, and oh, say plot could have conceived a better film. Blech. There is a sense that so much is missing from the film, or that a better, kick-ass, balls-to-the-wall action flick is missing. The trailers are extremely misleading. Pass on this one until it hits the dollar theatres or watch it by other means.

I so wish Clash could have been more God of War-esque. fuck, they just need to make a true translation/adaptation of God of War to the big screen.

By the way, cool to see another Vegas CG naiku, though I'm currently traveling around.

Lost in Translation- Never saw it before and while a bit slow, the look at Japanese culture + Scarlett Johannsen + Bill Murray's performance, made it highly watchable for me.

Hot Tub Time Machine - All the best parts are in the previews, especially so if you saw the Red Band trailer. Still a good flick though

Penelope. Movie was okay, but Peter Dinklage was ten kinds of awesome. I can't wait to see how famous that guy becomes a year from now. That guy is going to land an Emmy easily.

Hot Tub Time Machine: It had a few hysterical moments, but I didn't think it was that great. There was some random drunk girl that ran into the theatre for a moment and started dancing, and then ran out. That was probably the best part.

Ghost Town - not as funny as I was hoping but still a good watch

edge of darkness - decent. Will keep you entertained but nothing great

Funny People.

It was good, could have been really good if trimmed down a good bit. No reason it needed to be 2 hours and 20 minutes or whatever as it drug in places.

But there's a decent story in there (that could have been fleshed out more) and was pretty funny in places.

Taking Woodstock - I really enjoyed it, sure it was pointless but I have always enjoyed the late 1960's hippie subculture. It reminded me of an 60's version Dazed and Confused but instead of the teen coming to age story in the 1970's it was a 20's something coming to age story in the late 1960's. ;D

Ponyo - Beautiful.

Brothers - 4/5 - I was really looking forward to this movie after hearing about it from a couple friends. Brothers is about two brothers, one of which just gets out of prison while the other goes off to Afghanistan. The movie is very well acted and the story is pretty interesting but for some reason plays out very slowly. If the story wasn't so slow it would easily be one of my top movies of 2009. Natalie Portman is a fantastic mom throughout the film. Brothers is probably Tobey Maguires best performance. Its hard not to recommend the movie, its very good. I came into the movie thinking the trailer spoiled the story, but it didn't in anyway. Definitely worth checking out if you got the time.

Basketball Diaries - Or is it "The" Basketball Diaries. Interesting for what it was. I think it would've really blown me away as a 16 year old in 1995 but seeing it now, years after Requiem for a Dream absolutely defined the whole "drugs will fuck you up" genre lessens its impact. I'd give it about a 6 out of 10.

The Rock - Seriously, I didn't believe that a good Michael Bay flick existed in this world. This, however, was a solid movie.

Sherlock Holmes - good movie. liked it a lot..kept me guessing as to if they were going to stay grounded in reality or go the sci fi route

Brooklyn's Finest - wonderful dirty cop movie...the last 15 minutes were super tense...

The Lovely Bones - It was pretty good, but I've never read the book, so I didn't go in with any expectations, which was probably a good thing. Also at the part where
she is meeting all the girls at the tree and it's their own personal heaven
, This Mortal Coil's "Song to the Siren" played and I about broke down and cried like a bitch. I hadn't even been that emotionally devastated by the movie yet!

Ice Age 3 - I never saw the second one. Regardless, this was still quite good. I was watching it dubbed in Japanese which was interesting...
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: the lightning thief - not bad. Very Harry potter ish
not very good either. the action was good when it happened but most of the movie was not for me. A bit childish. 6.5/10

book of eli - 6/10 - I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would. I suppose the twist at the end was okay but still not a good movie.

Cop Out - other than Tracy making me laugh a couple times it really wasn't that great. On the other hand it was a pretty good throwback to 80's cop comedies which were never really good to begin with. I didn't know this was directed by Kevin Smith. I don't know how to feel about that.
