Surprisingly the Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck

Severance - Mildly enjoyable British horror/comedy. Surprisingly light on gore and only occasionally funny.

The Waitress - My love for Nathan Fillion is starting to get creepy.
 
I've been going crazy on Oscar screeners and in the past 4 days I've watched the following

Frost/Nixon
Milk
Gran Torino
Doubt

All 4 are phenomenal movies, and as much as I loathe Gus Van Sant, Milk is far and away the best of those movies I have seen. I don't think it's going to win Best Picture, but Sean Penn should win, Van Sant should win, and it should win Best Adapted Screenplay.

Gran Torino was great, too, and how it didn't get nominated for anything is beyond me.

Frost/Nixon was pretty good, although if Penn doesn't win Best Actor, Frank Langella should because he was a TREMENDOUS Nixon, and he's really the reason to see this movie.

Doubt wasn't that great of a story, but holy cow were those performances great. I would like to see Hoffman win for this, even though he won't, because he was great. The scene with him and Streep near the end of the film should in and of itself net these two Oscars, but only Streep is getting one. Amy Adams deserves one, too. Great acting.

i think he was insinuating that the fact that you hated benjamin button (an oscar contender) and really are excited for mall cop (a comedy that might be good, but also has serious suck potential, even though i LOVE kevin james personally) makes you an idiot. but i don't know, i'll let him defend himself.
 
Why because I'd rather watch a movie with a few laughs or some action in it rather then a drama that is slow throughout the whole thing? When did I say I was really excited to see it? All I said is I wanted to see it cause somebody else was going to see it. I'm a idiot b/c I don't like the same movies as everybody else? Get a fucking life. I thought this thread was about posting movies that you've seen and liked and not criticizing other people for their opinions.
 
I was thinking of seeing Benjamin Button but then I saw it was nearly 3 hours long. No thanks. I might go check out Mall Cop. I'm not a huge fan of Kevin James but I heard it was filmed at a mall next to me.
 
Shogun Assassin 4: Five Fistfuls Of Gold. Ogami Ittō, is simply bad ass. I love these films. I enjoy old school kung-fu , samurai films in general.

I like seeing 3 hour movies in the theater. If I'm at home, I have the option to keep stopping it, to eat, go to the bathroom, etc. Which makes it even longer than 3 hours. If I'm in a theater, I just have to fucking sit there and keep watching. I paid money, you know.
 
Just finished Defiance tonight and it was an amazing movie. Action, drama, and a true story.

Saw Gran Torino last night and it was also a great movie. New Eastwood Classic for sure.

BTW is there a thread some where were we can list movies that did suck I have a few.
 
Caught Slum Dog Millionaire tonight. Outstanding movie and great experience as always at the AFI Silver. Great weekend of movies for me since (as posted above) I saw Gran Torino and Milk last night.

I'll miss the AFI Silver when I move this summer. Will have to take advantage of it more the next 6 months. Next month for sure with a David Fincher film series and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind showing a few times.

Just list them here. This thread is really just a "what movie did you see last and what did you think of it?" thread. The op just isn't around to change the title and the mods haven't changed it despite people reporting it and asking for a name change.

Over the Edge... hadnt seen this movie in years... great early Matt Dillon flick
No Retreat, No Surrender 2... as cheezy as martial arts films can get, loved it

I wouldn't of had a problem if chimpster would have minded his own business instead of just assuming stuff and speaking for someone else.
 
Excuse me... one guy voices his opinion about a movie, and you freak out, they are just movies... everyone has opinions, not everyone likes my choices... I dont tell the person to "get a fucking life"

I watched 21 -- spoiler alert--



...it would have been better if things didn't work out for the kid at the end, but of course in the movies it has to.
 
I was really disappointed with 21. I remember hearing an interview about the book at the time on NPR over 5 years ago. The real story sounded a hell alot more interesting than the fake story in the movie turned out to be.

Valkyrie- can't stand Tom Cruise as a German with no attempt at an accent. Also you see every action scene in the TV spot. If it would of had more action and an attempt at a accent or German with subs it would of been better.

Pineapple Express- I haven't seen the whole movie yet but it stinks so far. I don't know what I'm supposed to be laughing at. Seth Rogen has never been very funny in any movie I have seen. He just talks and yells and looks stupid. Also I can see why James Franco doesn't do comedies because he is not at all funny. If I finish the movie and have a change of opinion I would be surprised.

You can say this about almost every comedian ever, so if you're going by that logic, you just don't like him personally. Go back and watch every Jim Carrey movie from ace ventura til he started doing drama. Same thing. Still funny. So is Seth Rogen. He's just a little more dry and relies more on improv. Nothing wrong with that.
 
I also watched Man On Wire streaming from Netflix...I fell asleep at different points...I have to say that what he did was amazing, but he seemed very self-absorbed (guess you'd have to be) and the people who helped him were portrayed as almost hero worshipers...maybe that's too strong a word, but that was my take.
 
Zack and Miri Make a Porno -- Why do I keep seeing the same people in these Michael Cera/Seth Rogen movies? I liked this one with the exception of that one scene...
 
Let the Right One In. fuck Twilight. This IS the real vampire love story here. It has a nice mixture of tender moments, gore, WTF moments. You never really get a great grasp on what is going to happen next. I must say it is one of the best vampire movies I've seen in years. Me and my wife started watching it and even though we both were tired and ready for bed, we could not go to bed until it until it was over. A must see.
I also read that it is supposed to be remade in the US by the guy who directed Cloverfield.:roll:
 
For those that saw 21, did you also see the History Channel Version that retold the story? Obviously, that version is the retelling of a true event, but at the same time, when you compare the "true story" and the hollywood version, I feel like they just pumped in a bit too much fluff.

Why would he need a German Accent? It clearly explained that in the begginning. The whole movie was in german, but was translated for English. Hence the reason the movie started in German and quickly morphed right into english. Since we were hearing it in English, but it was really in German, I don't think he needed an accent. Plus, it would have sounded ridiculous.

I agree with this one. I saw it last year in theater (imdb link) and it is a very good movie. No Hollywood mumble jumble and no Hollywood ending, this movie is actually quite disturbing at times because it involves pre-teens in a not-so-typical vampire love story. You can watch the trailer here.


I recently watched Cyborg She on a plane trip. It is actually a pretty good/cute boy falling in love with a girl cyborg movie. It's definitely worth a rental if you can find a copy.
 
I just finished watching Miami Vice. After preparing myself to see a movie that supposedly stunk, I throughly enjoyed it. I am not saying it is the best movie I have ever seen, but it looked really good and I liked the focus on drama rather than action.
 
Just finished watching "Juno" and "Baby Mama" with the wife over the weekend... (Guess what she wants?) Both movies were so-so, though they were better than I was expecting.

I thought Juno was so-so as well. I can sort of see why it gets all the love it does though...maybe.
 
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

I saw this for the second time, except this time it was a theater rescreening. It was amazing.
The drag queens rapping that the theater supplied as pre-show entertainment were astounding/appalling. :lol:

Jim Carrey is a totally different comedian with mostly physical stuff. And when he yells and looks stupid it is funny Rogen is not. Carrey is one of the best comedians in movie history, Seth is not even going to be considered. I think he should of just produced the stories he created and let some one funnier star in them, because they are decent stories.

Regardles of it being in German or not, the movie sucked.
 
JANE TU YA JANE NA - Saw it was one of the top indian films of last year.. It wasn't bad. A pretty shallow story but not bad. With the singing, it reminded me of, what would happen if adults made a mickey mouse club movie.

Slumdog Millionaire
Benjamin Button
Doubt
Milk
As you said, Milk dominates all. I found it far more powerful than any other film. Sean Penn was incredible.

As for Doubt, both Streep and Adams should win Oscars. Phillip Seymour Hoffman should too, but Heath Ledger was better.

Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire with both exceptional.

I'll hopefully see Frost/Nixon and The Reader soon to round out Best Picture nominations.
 
i'm glad you thought milk was that great. if the academy had ANY balls whatsoever, milk is your best picture. i think i can safely say that. frost/nixon is good, but i dunno if it should've been in for best picture. it's not THAT good. the acting is great, but it's kind of like doubt, except with a better story, just not quite worthy of being a best picture nominee. and i haven't seen the reader yet, but that's the other one i've heard wasn't quite worthy of being a best picture nominee. although i'm watching that one soon because i don't wanna judge it to hastily. benjamin button and slumdog are soon to follow after that.
