I'm suprised that they are still doing that special, it was around 40 cents a taco on sunday when I was a student there 5 years ago. There are alot of good cheap places to eat there, though, which you will miss when you graduate and the only thing that you can get in the "cheap" price range (under $10) is taco bell and random small Chinese restaurants. (I work in west haven CT, not far from Yale, but they are into more expensive triendier places here!)
Anyway, the corner room all you can eat pasta (monday?) was pretty reasonably priced for the quality. (The record at the time was 15 plates of pasta in one sitting???) The skeller also has good food, I think that they make it in the (much more expensive) restaurant upstairs. Golden Wok is good, although a little pricier if I remember right. Same for the Diner, which is such an institution (famous for sticky buns) that I'm sure you have been there by now. If you live out on north atherton, check out the calzone place a little past giant (towards wal mart). That's a Wrap (downtown) is good although a little pricier, but we mostly went there in the warmer weather after they had opened the outside seating. I was not a big fan of the "burritos as big as your head" place (la bamba? chain that seems to exist only in college towns) below McDonald's (disturbing pix on the walls!), but alot of the guys seemed to like them.
I'm sure that I have missed some places that some other alumni would add, and a few of these places may not even be open anymore. Anyway, the variety of cheap food in your area is really good. (Although I will admit to eating alot of stuff off the dollar menu at wendy's and at taco bell when I only had a couple of dollars.)
You Graduated in 01? I was just one year behind you, I'm actually working for the university now. The corner room is excellent, and they do the all you can eat pasta business still, though not as regularly as they used to. College Ave is the spot for cheap food, as it is the place to congregate on a weekend anyhow.
I'm surprised you didn't like La Bamba, that was the "when I had the money" spot- as opposed to Taco bell.
When I was there as a student I lived in the College Apartment complex right above the subway, I can remember the long drunken walk to Taco bell at 2:30 in the morning to grab some 7-layers.
Ah, Taco Bell
