Ted Kennedy Dead
My point was that I kept my thoughts on Novak to myself. I'm going to leave it at that, lest I sink to the classless, shameless, deplorable depths of the rest of you.
So it's "classless, shameless, deplorable" to have a negative opinion of a man?

I don't have an opinion on him either way, but to demand respect just because someone died is really rather silly, myke. You wouldn't be saying the same things if he were alive.

...

A guy that I worked with this summer once spent a day making a bunch of giant cardboard penises. He then put them in a bag, labeled the bag "Giant Bag of Dicks", and wore the bag for the rest of the day.

He is still classier than this thread.

Of course he wouldn't. That's the point.

This is a memorial thread. Do you go around writing "douche bag" on people's headstones? Would it be appropriate to walk into a funeral and tell the grieving relatives you're glad the deceased is gone?

You don't respect the man, fine. Keep your mouth shut. Don't piss on his grave.
That is driving everywhere. I remember looking through my Dad's National Lampoon magazines when I was a teenager and laughing hard at this ad:
Marked as a spoiler to give respect anyone that doesn't want to see it.

Classic.

So as I've made clear I was very saddened by Teddy's passing. That being said, I was just invited to a "vigil" in his honor in downtown DC. I think vigils have officially jumped the shark when we're having them for 77-year olds who were dying for over a year. If everyone gets a vigil now, how will people know we're sad when someone gets hit by a drunk driver (irony intentional)?

Just to keep this on topic, I'm going to paraphrase something from somewhere else, where the discussions are a bit better than what we've seen here so far:

Forty years ago, Ted Kennedy drove a car off a bridge, killing the passenger, and then fled from the scene. He was likely intoxicated at the time, and his family connections played a substantial role in keeping him from facing serious charges.

In the aftermath, Kennedy asked the Massachusetts electorate whether he should stay in office and, after getting a favorable response, he did so.

Since then, he's been responsible for HIPAA, COBRA, the National Cancer Act, ADA, the Mental Health Parity Act, SCHIP, the Family Medical Leave Act, a number of minimum wage increases, and more.

Maybe it's coincidence. Maybe it's good old Catholic guilt. But the man he was at the beginning of his career isn't the man he was at the end of it.

As controversial as his personal life was, his legislation helped protect millions of vulnerable citizens. Every last one of us, the naysayers and non alike, is richer and healthier than we would have been without him.

RIP.

That IS stupid. Just have a wake the night before the funeral and be done with it.

"demand respect" ≠ "don't be a fuckin' asshole."

I'm an advocate of the latter, as they are vastly different ideas.
Am i the only one offended by this? He just continues to flame and troll his agenda with comments like this that have nothing to do with the topic. Why doesn't a mod do everyone a favor and just ban this clown.
Ah, Myke always seems to be like that. I take his rhetoric with a grain of salt. I've been around socialist, bleeding heart liberals enough to be desensitized to it. They call you names, insult your intellegence and say you are against society...anything to take your attention off of their little agendas.
Oh, get off it, Ramstoria. It's going to be another round of feigned and inaccurate conservative outrage to rally around a beloved and deceased colleague for the purpose of accomplishing something politically.

It will be another "Wellstone Memorial."

But you know what? Neither Kennedy nor Wellstone would have it any other way. So your moral outrage is off the mark, because they are obliging what they would have wanted.
my bad, i didnt make it clear when i said that i expect his name to be thrown around. i also mean to say that i agree that he would have wanted it that way. im just saying, that was quick of pelosi to kick it off, less than 24 hours after.

Damn straight. I love shitty roads, schools, and public services. I also love to bitch how they don't do the job with the small amount of money that they get.

Kennedy did great things while in the Senate. I think Matthew's said it best when he described the Kennedy's legacy and their love of America and serving the American public.

Seeing all the drivel spewed by the right wingers here harkens me to a study regarding the general ignorance of such folk.

Read the following study: Misperceptions, the Media and the Iraq War
http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/pdf/oct03/IraqMedia_Oct03_rpt.pdf

Why are right-wingers the most uneducated and misinformed?
Reasons:
1. Its their "media." Fox had the MOST uninformed viewers. SURPRISE, SURPRISE! LOL
2. Too much information causes them too be confused. Refer to chart "Exposure to news and frequency of misperceptions" and data on page 20 of report (page 22 when navigating via viewer).

Conclusion: use simple words and concepts for right-wing morons. Do not look for dialogue, but rather diatribes with no substance. No, dogma does not count as substance.

So then citizens aren't entitled to anyth.... Aww, fuck it.

I mean, I have no problem with conservatives as a rule, but admitting you take your cues from what Sean Hannity says is like saying you trade stocks based on advice from a chimp. There's nothing wrong with being a conservative, in fact they have many worthwhile platforms, but the reason we don't have any substantive debate in this country is because people won't turn off Fox News.

And no, I can't even tangentially relate that rant to Ted Kennedy.

I don't know if this is aimed at my posts but why is it when someone doesn't like a politician they are part of the extreme other side? Why can't someone just not like a politician for poor choices that they made?

Hehe..honestly, I can say that I have never listened to or watched Hannity...(although I DO enjoy listening to Bill Cunningham when in the car)...I was just rolling with what you assumed of me ;)

I've voted both ways in the past. If someone would ask me what I am...I'm an American. I'm proud of our country. I hate how we go out of out of our way to help the world out and they hate us usually. This isnt about the war...if there is a disaster, the US is almost always one of the first countries to offer a hand. What does that get us? Contempt...jealousy? Envy from other countries?

My father died in Vietnam fighting for our country. My grandfathers battleship had left Pearl Harbor one dayy before the Japanese attack...and he always seemed to regret not being there to fight. I take so much pride in my country. I'm nothing if Im not patriotic. When I saw the flag on our city hall was starting to rip, I took it down personally and took it in to the mayor and told him how shameful it was. Thats me. Republican? Democrat? Just American.

Maybe its an idiotic concept anymore...but I just want our country to PROSPER and take its rightful place in the world order. Forgive me if I get angry when I see what I think seems to be a backwards way of trying to get to that point. While we try to protect the people that NEED protecting, we are also enabling some folks to take advantage. Our country is becoming a land of freeloaders.

Call me names if you want, but never doubt my love of my country.

It doesn't matter what you are or where you're from, joulsey. As long as you AREN'T a bleeding heart, communist lefty, anything you say will be described as ignorant, dittohead drivel. You can't be an independent thinker, after all. You must be a follower of some right-wing, conspiratorial, fascist leader.

Bmulligan, stop being so paranoid. Nobody here would ever call you a "leader".

So... never mind that the United States bombs a few places from time to time. Never mind that the number one recipient of the United States' foreign aid is arguably the most hated country in the world. It's because you're so damn charitable! They're all jealous! They're all envious!

...

Now does that make any fucking sense to you? Because it shouldn't.

...

Look. The United States gives out a lot of foreign aid, yes. A pretty decent chunk even goes to worthwhile causes. But fair or not, to expect that people will be cool with your country when your dollars paid for both the meal on their table and the bullet holes in their walls? That, komrade, is totally bat-shit fucking insane.

Imagine living in a country where the majority of people think like him.

Why did Ted Kennedy continue to get re-elected? He knew who he was representing in the Senate, and he delivered progressive reforms to them.

Name another Senator who's delivered so much to their constituents. That's just reality folks. Face it.

But as Colbert has pointed out, reality has a well-known liberal bias. Alas.

"70% of the lot" ≠ "Everything." But it flows a bit better, I'll give you that.

Your short-term memory is unfortunate. Yesterday you made a ridiculous claim. I called you on that claim. You never responded to it directly. I would like you to do so.

Instead we got this:

My father died in Vietnam fighting for our country. My grandfathers battleship had left Pearl Harbor one dayy before the Japanese attack...and he always seemed to regret not being there to fight. I take so much pride in my country. I'm nothing if Im not patriotic. When I saw the flag on our city hall was starting to rip, I took it down personally and took it in to the mayor and told him how shameful it was. Thats me. Republican? Democrat? Just American.

Call me names if you want, but never doubt my love of my country.

I never called you names. I implied you are anti-intellectual and said you "lack an informed understanding." But those aren't names, those are claims and conclusions. Their factuality lies in you arguing against points made by Pelosi in a speech yesterday that she never made (points she never made, that is). Then you go on and later argue against people for "doubting your love of your country" when nobody did such a thing?

I used to work and live in Over the Rhine for a number of years. You know, the part of Cincy you're too afraid to go to because it's poor and black? Well, it is; and like any good neighborhood teeming with poverty, homelessness was an issue there. I often had conversations with homeless persons and other street folks over the years. But the ones I tended to steer clear of were the ones who saw things that weren't there, or argued about stuff that couldn't happen in reality. When, in the middle of a conversation, they would get agitated and scream at me "Hey, dude, why are you winkin' at my tortoise? DON'T YOU BE LOOKIN' AT MY TORTOISE LIKE THAT! GET THE fuck AWAY FROM MY TORTOISE!"

Anyway, those kinds of conversations where you just walk away, shake your head, and try to wrap your brain around what the fuck was the matter with that person. We've had them. Well, let me tell you that, based on the things you've said in this thread about Ted Kennedy and yourself, I'm feeling deja vu all over again.

And I'm not looking at your tortoise, so don't even go there.
I used to work and live in Over the Rhine for a number of years. You know, the part of Cincy you're too afraid to go to because it's poor and black? .
Well at least you are giving me a good laugh now, Myke. I worked for years in home health care all over the city. Lots of visits to Over the Rhine. The company used to send me there because a couple of my female co-workers got attacked on runs. I even had a guy in a wheelchair try to hold me hostage in his apartment...with a knife. After backing up about 3 feet I was safe though ;)

As for everything else you said...maybe Ill get to answering it later. I just got off a double shift and I'm going to bed.

How much of a slap on the wrist did Kennedy get for the car wreck? Did he lock the doors or tied her up? Because it was an accident? People of gotten off for accidents before... where's the wiki link?
