Ten year old flying alone to summer camp from CA to MI? But airline is at fault? WTF!

Long story short, some couple from San Francisco, CA paid a $99 fee to a company working with United Airlines to keep track of their kid as she went from CA to MI, but got stuck at an airport in Chicago.

What kinda absent minded morons leave their underage kid go on a flight on her own and then blame the airline for their own stupidity? Moreover, what's wrong with summer camps in CA that they felt they had to send their kid to MI to one?:roll:
 
Nothing wrong with that. Airlines offer a service for kids to fly alone and be escorted by employees.

So they're at fault when they mess up. If they don't want that liability then they shouldn't offer the service and require kids to be accompanied by an adult.
 
Let's remove emotional constructs here:

They paid a service they didn't get. You'd be mad too.

Now if they sued the airline for millions for emotional distress and other bullshit, I'd be annoyed. But this is a simple case of not getting what you paid for.

10 years old isn't that young. It's not like they sent a 5 year old alone with just an airline service to look out for them.
 
So...you're mad there are people out there driving the economy by buying luggage, summer clothing, enrolling in summer camps, and supporting the airline industry?

Do we know what activities this particular camp offers? Do we know if all the ones near the family were already full? Does the girl's best friend live in the same state as the camp because one of them recently moved, and this is a way for those girls to continue their friendship? Is the girl allergic to something in her home state and local camps are crawling with it? Does she have a scholarship of sorts? Is there a religious reason for the camp decision?

Look, I could keep this up all day, and just might have to with the way my work is looking right now.
 
This service has been around for decades and the fact that the parents can afford to send their kid to another state isn't really an issue here. Sure, there are deeper issues that can be discussed, but you're going to have to articulate the argument better than saying that "it just seemed so stupid."

Yeah no shit. I was flying alone when I was around that age to visit relatives and all they did was alert the flight attendant to keep an eye out. I was probably the best behaved child on that flight lol.

Actually I did, but I still found it ridiculous that the couple sent their 10 year old halfway across the country to go to a summer camp and put the onus fully on the airline over this. It's one thing to me if maybe super mom or super dad of the year there went with the kid, but putting all your faith into the ability of one stranger to keep an eye on your kid is just gonna lead to failure at one point or another imo.

They paid for a service. Airline did not deliver said service they paid for.

Nothing further needs to be considered.
 
Personally I still think the couple sending their kid 2000 miles from her home and putting their full trust in the airline and one of their subcontractors is a damn good topic for discussion.
 
Except it isn't, because it doesn't matter. None of that matters, there's no reason to focus on it. You are worried about the wrong thing.

Unaccompanied minors on flights is nothing new. The article simply warns you not to use United for that function.

Sorry that you're poor. But we're rich and we're sending our kid to a camp in MI. We didn't get what we paid for. That's about the end of the story.

If they were rich the woman would fly with her kid to Chicago and fly back. This is why the concept of unaccompanied minors exists. People don't want to fly with their kid to get them somewhere they need to go. Also separations.

We just sent our 10 yr old daughter on a flight to CA from Denver by herself. Yeah it was direct but TSA let's you drop off and pick at the gate.

She was so excited to go. Gotta cut the cord sometime.

Was mommy your roommate in college or something?
