Texas GameStop Manager Only Sells to Good Students (UPDATE: Manager Suspended)
Fifty bucks says this guy will be jobless by the end of the week. The last thing Gamestop corporate wants to hear is that one of their store managers is refusing to take peoples money.
In the end, I'm sure this is will be what decides the matter.

I'm just sayin...

Yep, too true.

At the end of the day money is the only important thing, thats why the world is in the fine state it's currently in.

I'm not having a pop at your post there Nork, just my opinion on the sad state of things.

Speaking of gamestop dave, I wonder what his opinion on this is.

No doubt it would be laced with grammatical errors and poorly spelled words, as if he had typed it while getting an enema.

I believe he is banned.

What if sales go up because people approve of his stance? Thus far he's denied less than 25 sales. It only takes a few parents to say "hey I like that" to wipe that loss and turn it into a net profit.

Several people in this thread have said they'll shop there because of this, and we represent the teeniest tinyest fraction of the store's total customer base. This could very well turn out to be a win for this store.
Awww. We should let him back just to comment about this thread.

I'm still bitter that I'm going to miss out on his "trade in Halo 3 for $35 worth of instore credit" deals.

I rather doubt the math works out in his favor, but we'll see (or maybe we wont if he gets canned). It looks like people from here want to go there largely to try to get a free game.
Stupid.
Someone needs to contact the ACLU, Gamestop is discriminating against stupid kids. Stupid kids have rights you know!

I'm missing him already, I'll get bored with this quote and I was looking forward to replacing it with another Gamestop Dave original.:)

Just because someone does not get good grades in school does not mean they're stupid.

Look at Thomas Edison.

We should be more concerned about what these schools are teaching our kids and if the information is worthwhile than what grades they're obtaining.

I love how this news is getting so much postive press.

What GameStop should do is offer a discount or even a free used game when you bring in a "good report card." If its a used game worth $20 or less, GameStop wouldn't be losing much money and they will get a lot more parents shopping there.

This isn't any different than insurance companies giving better car insurance for good grades. I think Allstate has a program like that.

So does USAA.
Hmmm.

If car insurance companies gave discounts for being a good driver, I could see women calling it sexist.
:shame: Oh no you didn't.

As for the Gamestop manager, I think a lot of it will have to deal with how the community responds.

If customers/parents/teachers approve of the idea then firing the manager could bring some negative attention to Gamestop. Here's a manager trying to encourage kids to do well in school and act a little more civilized in public and the company fires him? It could bring some bad press: "Gamestop doesn't care about children, their grades, or their manners, they just want the dollar." If the community approves it may be better for Gamestop to keep the manager in place for the time being, even if the stores actions may hurt the bottom line somewhat. It's better to lose a dollar than have a damaged image if you're a corporation. The bad image can cost you a lot more in the long run.

And if the manager's actions are challenged by the customer base then Gamestop can fire him and say he was acting on his own...yadda, yadda, yadda.

Gamestop needs to act carefully about this issue and not jump in and fire him too soon.

Hats off to the manager for trying to encourage the youth to do well in schools and not act like thugs. Even if Gamestop fires him, I'm willing to bet a company/organization who shares his same views/feelings would be more than happy to talk to him about another job.
I just watched the movie "Coach Carter" the other night - good movie.

I think if you really want to help the kids, you teach them math or coach the bball team. IMO it's not the job of the local Gamestore manager to act like a surrogate parent.

The "takes a village" school of thought is just not going to work in the fluid, fast-paced 21st century, besides does society really need the ethics of Joe Nobody shoved down our throats every time we want to purchase a game?

The problem with this kind of policing is that most people may think it's OK when it's Gamestore and the kids - but it breaks down when a rogue Walgreens pharmacist refuses to sell the Pill to women because he doesn't believe in contraception. It's actually wrong in either case - just more evident in the latter.
Wow the Bono law extended it by 50 years? fuck.
WTF! I could have gotten so many free games if I lived in Texas! His store will be going out of business pretty soon if he actually does this.
he would buy the game. Out of his own pocket.

I think he's got a good idea, but it can easily be abused by greedy kids and their equally greedy parents.

Honestly, I think game stores should invoke a stern "no one under 17 allowed unless escorted by a parent". It would solve a lot of problems, especially at the more ghetto game stores. Never going to happen, but still . . .
what if a kid who got all F's came in with a bunch of high value trade-ins?
Then we know he rightfully deserved those F's.

Wow, this is pretty close to where I am. It's a pretty ballsy move and definitely not good for business, but I kinda wish more parents cared this much. It definitely is not his job to do this thing, and it will hurt his job and his store.
Hmmm.

I guess he never gives away any 360 games then.
Yeah.

I mean, there aren't very many mothers who attend school still.

Those Wii games fly off the shelves.

Cock-blocks the "Your mom" retort.
Hmmmm.
I'm not even revved up.
Digging up a comment from the first page everyone else ignored?

Ironic that you're just backing it up anyway.
...

I forgot that I'm supposed to read the latest page of a thread.

Sorry.

LMAO!!! I am actually fairly close with this guy. We are both Assistant Store Managers here in the south dallas area, we are actually about 10 miles from each other. He is indeed going to get in trouble for this, but he most likely wont get fired for this. He has been at that store for a long time now, and damn good at his job too.

He must have been planning this, because he did this on the very week that EVERY store manager in the country is at a convention in dallas.

I support what he is trying to do tho, the area we are in is terrible, not EVEN 2 weeks ago, that exact store was broken into in the middle of the night, the guys ripped the back door from the hinges from behind the building and got into the system storage room and proceded to steal 8 PS3's, 6 360 elite's, and 11 360 premiums.
Asshole.

Stupid.
I bet the both of you have suck grades, cuss a lot and let your boxers hang out over the top of your pants.

With all this media coverage this guy is getting, it would look pretty bad on GSs part if they end up demoting or firing him (doubt it would be that drastic either way).

I wonder if the kids with good grades would just settle for not being asked if they want to preorder something everytime they walk by the front of the store.

Actually in my store we do just that. If you're 16 or under, and you don't have a parent with you, then we tell you to leave the store. Corporate doesn't care because those kids don't buy anything 90% of the time anyway. If they do it's only like $2 copy of Madden 05.

Oh, don't worry i will. I got a couple of calls from my SM talking about how they are all freaking out, out there in vegas, and they are trying to handle the situation out ASAP. Im going to get some scoop today actually.
"Free Halo 3 for straight A's."

:D

GS Mananger 1 - "......and apparently he doesn't even take pre-orders from the kids who get bad grades"

GM Manager 2 - "OH THE HUMANITY !!!!" *Faints*

at the game store I work at, we have a policy similar to that. we usually let the well behaved kids stay, but a majority of the time, you usually need to have a parent with you at the store.

GameStop continues to succeed by doing everything that fails. Assholes.

Well I can't say I'm shocked about his suspentions.

He may have had good intentions with his business practices, but the bottom line here his practices hurt sales, and of course a big corporation won't stand for that.

he's probibly going make a youtube video blog like this guy did

http://youtube.com/watch?v=BGfcDdaOwi4

oh please man, cry me a river. This guy on the video is acting like he's shocked he got fired from Gamestop and all depressed. Well that's what you get for opening you big mouth and saying your "looking for another job". His gamestop friends aren't going to give a shit after a few weeks...

Man, too bad about the manager. Seems like he'll be able to rebound if he gets fired. I mean, he's apparently well-liked in the community and he seems like a bright, hardworking guy. It's a shame that he's the exception rather than the rule.

I understand the issue if a pharmacist decides to start deciding who he provides his goods to, there's alot more at stake but with videogames? Come on. Waaaaay back when I was in 9th grade, I got a D and my SNES got taken away with a quickness. I made sure that could never happen again. I can see kids out there doing the same thing.
