ALERT: Preorders available for a few select games at most Blockbuster stores

Most regular Blockbuster locations (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are taking preorders for Guitar Hero Aerosmith, Star Wars Force Unleashed, and possibly a few other games (YMMV on the cashier knowing about it). $5 is required for a deposit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos and to post any trade-in values you have obtained. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system. One of the CAG Wiki editors will then add them to the Wiki.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals which we haven't had recently anyway). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Info
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Spring/Summer 2008) most Blockbuster stores are now selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, and Wii's. Most still do not sell handheld systems (a few apparently sell the DS but I've never seen them there). As a result of not selling used hardware, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Only Gamerush stores allow for preorders of your choice of new games (though, it seems, some stores have stopped taking preorders). On the other hand, some regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for a few select mega-release titles (recent examples: Halo 3, SSBB, Mario Kart, GTA IV).

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, some regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games. I will be maintaining a list below here for those with Blockbuster credit but no access to a GR store.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New games that may be available for purchase at select non-GR Blockbusters
For those with access to only regular Blockbuster stores but wanting to take advantage of the decent trade-in values Blockbuster offers, this is the list of new games being sold by some regular Blockbuster locations. Note that they will generally not get new games on the release date. They will most likely have them a few days to weeks later. Stock is usually very limited and they do not seem to get restocks of most games. So once something is sold out they will most likely not get it back. Many of the "older "new games in the list below may be hard to find at this point.

Does anyone know when Gamerush is going to get the new Incredible Hulk game in. The street date is apparently June 6th (friday); although GR typically get their games on fridays, they never get their games on the street date, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Need opinions here... Been doing some pretty fantastic flipping recently, and I have about $400 in BB credit, and an awesome store to work with. Tomorrow they will receive:

1 x Wii
3 GOW PSP Bundles
5 DS Lites

Right now they have virtually nothing in stock that is helpful, but they will hold whatever I want till I can get there tomorrow. What would be the easiest to sell on CL? The Wii is my first thought. Anyone in the KC area want to buy a Wii?

Im going to start my flipping travels tomorrow. I have one quick question. Your credit accumulates from all the stores correct? Meaning if i trade in one thing for $40 TIV at one store...then go to another store and trade in another thing for $30 TIV... I will have a total of $70 in credit at any blockbuster/gamerush I go to correct?

My first goal is to get enough to get MGS4 from them. I have a March Madness 08 which should be TIV $30 which I got for 9.98 from Target. Just need another couple. :D

Get it put into a value card instead of into your account so you can use it at any local blockbuster.

If you want to use credit at more than one store, you have to have them put it on a "value card" which is their fancy gift card for trade credit. Make sure you request that because if they put it on your store account, it is tied only to that store you traded at.

So does that mean if its put onto my account it will be split up among the stores? Or you are just saying that to make it easier?

to drop off at Blockbuster with a copy of condemned 2. Customer there was looking to buy a refurbished PS2. He was telling the employee how he wanted to save a few bucks on a used one. He then said, "I work across the street at Blockbuster."
Here i was buying a game that I would very likely be trading into him tomorrow for a $10 bump, while he spent his minimum wage on a used PS2.

Ah ok. Thanks for the answer guys.

Harry Potter 360 - $15
College Hoops 2k8 360 - $15

I traded these in at a 3rd, seldom used BB. Lady at the counter told me that I had to wait for the Manager to make trades. :whistle2:s Ended up waiting for about 5 minutes. I guess not many people trade in to this BB because when I told her that I wanted the credit on a value card, she asked me if I still had the GC from last time(2 weeks ago). No multiple copies at this BB for me.

I'm back, baby. Hope everyone had a great dump day... who knows what magical drops the day will bring? Not me- I'm just kunai.

Wow, that's respect right there.
Yeah, but what you are doing could cause just as much trouble. It depends entirely on how much the clerks are paying attention, whether they think it is wrong (to trade multiples - even on different days), and if so, whether they care enough to do anything about it.

It may work for you that sealed is OK, but all it takes is one junior detective to think "Ah, trading in sealed games means he stole them from Walmart! I'm a genius!". Why run that risk? Yeah, it's no big deal in the long run but the point is to avoid hassles ;).
True, but I'm totally paranoid I'll go to trade in the game and the value won't be what they quoted me or that they will refuse my trade. Then I'm stuck with a total crapper of a game.

I'd rather they just refuse my trade and still be able to take it back to Target if I wanted/needed to.

Read this thread, get familiar with it. We know how Blockbuster works. We know pretty much exactly when prices change. Your risk is minimal. And even in the extremely unlikely instance that you take a loss, what is one loss in comparison to all of the gains you've already made.

Trading in sealed games is shady (and illegal in some states). It will cause far more problems for you in the end.
Has anyone been able to get the gears of wars' PSP from BB/GR ?
I meant God of War
Do you mean God of War PSP? Because if there is a Gears of War one, I have yet to hear about it.

Edit: Ok, thought that's what you meant. I heard stores were getting a few in around here today, but I'm still content with my fat PSP so I didn't go out to check.
If anyone accuses you of stealing, why not just show the receipt...
The point of the trade-in program is for gamers to trade several old games to get a newer game. That's basic reason for it.
Many have found other ways to use the program to their advantage, myself included.
If you show them a receipt from target for games bought for less than $10, that they are giving you $30 or more in credit, they are just as likely to refuse the trade as if they were stolen.
You have proof they aren't stolen, but if the manager/employee feel that Blockbuster is getting taken advantage of, they can still decline the trade for any reason. I don't have the current trade agreement right now, but i'm pretty sure it states 'no dealers'.
Buying bulk games from Target and Gamestop and trading them in to various Blockbusters makes you/us a dealer.
On that note, most Gamestop sales have in the fine print no dealers. So be warned if on a b2g1 free sale, if you buy 3 copies each of Darkness, Marvel/Forza2, and Hour of Victory, they may begin to suspect something(I know) You may want to spread out your purchases from them too.

The god of war bundles are going pretty good on Ebay, so if you have credit you want to convert to cash it's a good option. Even with ebay fees, you could get close to equal cash back on it.

Also looking for a recent TIV of this for the PS3. Found a Target with these at 85% off -- $5.04. I rarely see anything hit more than 75% off so i'm guessing this may be a winner.

You know that was the bullshit line I was fed by the DM a few years back during my initial ban. He tried to paint the trade program as a favor being done for the consumer. What a joke, the fact that GS make a bazillion dollars reselling used games just escaped him, if GR/BB resold the games for the same price they gave me with a small stipend for handling, I'd be on board with the idea, but that's not the reality of the situation. The reason GS makes money and GR less, is the simple fact that GS takes all their business avenues seriously, and thus monitor / adjust trade prices in realtime.

The disjoint between the trade agreement and paranoia most of us feel (kunai excluded), is just ridiculous. We're not theives, we're customers helping them fuel their trade business. If they are not making a profit on the sale of the used item, it's because they are mismanging the entire used game business and not because we're "Taking advantage" of GR/BB.

So I'm off to pickup a preorder that I'm fairly certain they are making a profit on by selling to me, I personally vote for communism and/or the ability to return bad games in the same way I can return clothes that I don't like.

I actually traded it in on Monday for $25.

Congrats.
I have one awaiting pick-up, but just saw the Madden Blue one out in August...I hope the red is metallic....

KR: American Idol Edition held at 35$, it was a first for me however, the girl failed to put the credit on my card, so she gave me cash instead. There is 1 copy left at the Seal Beach target if anyone is interested. Don't forget to use the 5 of 25 and the 10$ coupons.

Your transactions with GR/BB are similar to many other transactions in a capitalistic society that ignore externalities. You are taking value out of the economic system without providing any value in return. In general most people have no problem with you exploiting the system as long as they don't have to think about it and it's on a small enough scale that it isn't noticed at a macro level. It is not until the system exploitation is raised into consiousness that it becomes an issue. Even if it is raised into conciousness it will not be addressed until the return expected from correcting the issue is greater than the cost of addressing it.

Ethically speaking you are very similar to people on welfare that don't deserve to be, predatory lenders or people that exploit tax loopholes.

On a more personal level the harassment you receive in actuality benefits you in the long run. If it was easier to exploit the trade ins at Blockbuster the FW/SD effect would kick in and everyone would do it. Eventually BB would be forced to change their policy or get out of games completely.

Not really sure I agree with you.

Ethically, I don't think there's anything wrong with what we're doing. On principal, we are trading games to blockbuster because 90% of the time they offer (by far) the best trade value compared to any other place that accepts trade in. Certainly there is a level of discernment one must exercise (is it really right to trade 10 copies of a clearanced game across 10 different blockbuster?) but that is really up to the user.

Also, comparing us CAGs to people who exploit welfare/tax system is beyond an unfair parallel. Technically, we do add value back to the economic system that you refer to. I don't think anyone here enjoys trading games simply to accrue a vast amount of blockbuster credit; one way or another, be it via rentals, console/game purchases, or misc purchases that you can find at blockbuster, we each use our credit. Blockbuster certainly doesn't maintain a fabulous margin on the few of us who do this, but we contribute nonetheless.

To assert that we, in some convoluded way, are cheating BB (or to a wider level the US free market system) is simply incorrect.

Most of the games I trade (10+ copies) are allocated to stores in the midwest where flipping isn't possible, and people are actually able to get the games cheaper than walking into the local Wal-Mart. Beowulf doesn't count.

I feel bad trading two of the same game to any BB. I'd probably have a heart attack if I traded 10+ copies of anything.

Then again, you probably set the standard for highest return on investment for all of us CAGs.

If anyone sees Lego Indiana Jones for rent yet in your travels let me know. I'll probably head to Hollywood to see if I can use one of my free rentals there but want BB as a backup ;). But then again both probably won't have it for rent till Friday. They both suck that way.

Edit - Hmmm, I thought the ads I read said "in store" Tuesday but it appears it may ship today (for Weds). So probably no one will have it yet...

Yup, I saw them for rent as well. For whatever reason, my store's shipment of copies for sale is on a separate shipment and is running very late. So, my pre-ordered copy might be in tomorrow, but hopefully here any minute.

Thanks, guys. Just curious - what kind of stock do they have for it (360 verson)? I went to Hollywood and snagged it there with a free rental coupon from June 2007 (apparently they don't expire and I'd been throwing away the old ones before :wall:). But Hollywood only had one, and, of course, it is due back so soon (Sunday I think). I'd like to snag it again next week from Blockbuster. Hopefully they deem to carry more than 1 copy!

I have to rent tons of games this month. I got 4 free rentals from Hollywood (all for June - though I guess I could risk saving 1 for next year) and 3 Coke Rewards coupons at Blockbuster that expire June 30th. I really don't have so much time for all those. The thing is, when I rent a game, even for free, I feel like I have to put a few hours in on it every day so I end up doing that and nothing else with my free time . I've been pouring time into Bully because that was my one of May free Hollywood rentals.

just had the ultimate trade

snagged 7 copies of dirt for the 360 at target for 3.67 with no coupon lol
