Is it another big comic week this week? Like, is my checking accoutn going to be worse off than Sue Dibney? (Was that joke inappropriate or since she's a fictional character, does that make it alright?)

Nigel did you get an invitation from diamond to visit the NY Comic-con, and if so did you go? It was pretty cool, pretty small compared to wizard world, although way better people there then at the last philadelphia wizard world. And, they did give out these after the "breakfast" and discussion:

I just wanted to say thanks to everybody who posted about Hulk vs. Wolverine w/o giving details. I'm waiting until I have the complete series before I read it and I appreciate not seeing any spoilers. Thanks again.

To be honest I dont go to cons much. If I had wanted to, I most likely could have gone, but with everything else going on in my life it really wasnt much of an option.

Picked up Astonshing Xmen Sagas #1
My first comic book buy since probably late '90s. I bought this as a recommendation from the comic store guy but I should have known better than to do that because even when I did collect I did not listen to them. The problem is this is just an overview of all the Astonishing Xmen #1-12. It was not my idea of a comic where as you get into the story and characters. So now I will probably pick up something in this thread.
 
What a retard (not you, the shop guy). If someone wanted to pick up the series on the newest issue, it is a quick catch up book. If you want the actual story (you really do) buy the first two trades for astonishing x-men.

Hell, take the Sagas book back and exchange the price towards the first astonishing x-men trade ($14.99). If they give you crap about bringing it back, mention that it was thier suggestion, and that it wasnt a fucking comic.

No problem. If there's anything that looks interesting dont hesitate to ask on here. Even in my store I pride myself on not trying to shovel crap out the door. I figure if someone leaves happy with a $3 comic it's better than someone who becomes pissy with a crappy $15 trade. The owner looks at me a bit funny in that respect, but I keep making him money so he doesnt complain too much
 
The hardcover should be out by April, since the book is coming out every other month it should be up to issue 14. I'm sure if you order the HC from instocktrades.com you can get around 20 bucks, for all 12 issues. Issue 13 was fantastic by the way, good to see Whedon come back.
 
Let's see, we've got a Lost writer doing 1 book, Carnivale creator picking up another and Stephen King in the mix as well. Marvel may pump out 30 shitty books a month but they can be really awesome at times.

I'm also looking forward to the conclusion of Extremis, though I'm not sure if I should pick up the 2 issues I'm missing or wait for the trade....

I wish I could agree with you 100% but just because they are famous writers doesn't mean they can write comics. I know hard to believe....at least in my eyes. Identity Crises to me was a slap in the face as a fan of Giffen's and Dematties' run on Justice League. King's book won't be out until 2007, and I don't think he is writing it just overlooking the project. Yes these people have made names for themselves in this business, but there are plenty of fans out there with the love for these characters, that I know have better ideas. Ultimate Hulk Vs. Wolverine and Astonishing kick ass though, those two I can agree with you on.

1modernboy, Mouse Guard was my pick for best comic of the week last week. It was amazing. I reviewed on my website.
 
You do realize that Giffen is behind all those killings? He's been in the room everytime they've gone over the "To Kill" list.

Mouse Guard should be an OGN, or a series of GN... Too little story is told in too few pages. LOVED the art work, but I need more than that to buy a book.

Agreed. I'm hoping issue #2 will flesh stuff out a bit. What originally caught my eye was the odd dimensions of the print, but once I looked inside and got a feel for the visual representation I was hooked.

This is exactly the kind of nonsense that is causing me to spend less and less on comics. I understand why Loeb has been late but at some point he should have handed Supes/Bats to someone else so the book could actually see the light of day. It especially pisses me off when books that are solicited for 6 weeks (All-Star Batman), bimonthly (Wolverine vs. Hulk) or longer (Planetary) STILL don't get released on time. To me, it's a bad sign when a new writer is hired who is a producer on a show or a writer for something else. Their priority is NOT on the comic so they're inevitably going to be late. Comics are late-shipping themselves into a hole that they may not be able to dig themselves out of.

I have liked All-star Batman & Robin so far but, but between the speed Miller is telling his story at and the time it takes for an issue to come out I can't stand it.
 
Inifnite Crisis #5 - Wow, per usual. Consistantly shocked at just how much they pack into each issue. I loved the last page too :)

Batman Annual #25 - Works with current continuity (read: Infinite Crisis) to explain whay Jason Todd is back. The way they explain just why he's a bad guy fits well too.

Marvel Zombies - fuck yeah.

Ultimates #10 - This book is too good. It really makes normal New Avengers look like complete crap. The scene with Hawkeye has shades of Bullseye...but Hawks moment is a little more hardcore.

I really need to get some work done though. Reading too much :)

Been a while since I've been in the Comic Topic. Which one is CAG upto these days? Number 2, 3?

Anyway, I haven't really been buying the weeklys or monthlys too much as of late. It just got to the point where I was buying too many at a time and wasn't able to even read all of them. Yaeh, so it got kind of expensive.

Instead, I've been going through more of my TPB and Graphic Novel Collection.

But first off let me just say that how I let myself miss out on such an excellent comic as The Goon is simply beyond me. This is now one of my all time favorite comics ever made. It is equal time fun and comical, and yet still enough action. Not too mention the story is one of the most original I have read. I'm just glad that i saw it in the one CAG that has been pimping it out in his sig., I think it was RolentlessRolento, who inspired me to pick it up again. Well, actually that and seeing it at my library for the first time. Sucks that they only have Volumes 0-2 though. Oh well, the comic is so great that I think next Comic-Con or 30% off coupon I'll pick them all up at Border's.

I've read through a lot of my Mike Mignola stuff again. Actually, mostly just Hellboy. I've read Wake the Devil, The Chained Coffin and Others, The Right Hand of Doom, and BPRD Hollow Earth. And I've come to the conclusion that Guillermo Del Toro did a fair job in translating the comics to the big screen. He kept true to the source material while taking just enough creative liberties with it. Of course there is pros and cons to the movie from the comics, but I'm not going be preturbed by them.

Of the comics I've picked up recently, I must say that Batman/Deathblow: After the Fire is one of the most dissapointing comics I've picked up in a very long time. I was expecting so much more from Brian Azzarello as I thought he'd be perfect for the Batman universe with his dark and gritty story telling. I have not one good thing to say about this Graphic Novel. I even think the artwork is some of the worst I"ve ever seen. I know that most people don't agree with me, but I think that Batman simply doesn't fit Azarello, but Superman strangely fits him more IMPO. I think Azarello should just stick to his own IP like 100 Bullets, but even this is starting to wane it seems.

And I finally I finished up my ABC Comics side issue. Some of it liked, some of it I didn't, but what can I say, Alan Moore is just a marvel to beheld. First I must say that I'm not really a fan of Splash Branigan and a couple other comics in it, but I'm a huge fan of the Tom Strong/Tesla Strong stories and Jack B Quick/Top 10 stuff. He is one of the best authors I have ever read.
 
I've been thinking of perhaps getting back into picking up some weeklys/monthlys....anybody have any suggestiongs? I've been reading Infinite Crisis here and there since I'm a huge fan of Identity Crisis now, but I'm probably just going to wait for the TPB of it to come out later down the line, so any other suggestions would be definitely grateful.

Edit: Oh and Guys check out the new sig for V for Vendetta which looks awesome. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the movie may actually hold to my hopes and stay true to the source material of Alan Moore.
 
What was it about Identity Crisis that you loved so much? I thought it was very disappointing. The first issue was great. But every issue that followed failed to match it. And I didn't even mind the ending, while most people absolutely hated it.

The fact that the two major plot points in the series involved two things that had never really been covered and were kind of taboo.

That and just much much more. The character development was simply phenomenal and it went in different direction that I haven't seen done in a comic book well since Watchmen and Frank Miller.

The killing didn't bother me as much as what happened to Sue and how the heroes reacted. That really didn't settle well with me, heroes don't lobotimize villians, there are more things. We actually talked about it in our second podcast on my website, if you want to know what else bothered me about it. And I agree Mouseguard would have sold better in Graphic Novel format.
 
Identity Crisis was a great book, IMO. I can see how some people would'nt like that, but thats where opinions come in.

The thing that completely pissed me off had little to do with the book, but how certain people took Ralphs "goodbye" at the end...the part where he talks to the picture.

People kept saying he went nuts.


These people, I presume, have never felt the loss of a loved one, or are the typical basement dwelling lack of girlfriend fuckers that seem to be the poster children/adults that give comics a bad name.

I cant even fathom losing my girl. Hell, even losing an ex would hit me. But a longtime wife, his best friend, being killed with little to no resolution would give him all the reason in the world to hold on to the memories of Sue as long and as hard as he feels necesary.

On Newsarama they have a 5 page preview of 52 (quality through and through) that shows Ralph sticking a gun in his mouth while listening to his answering machine tell him that some has written something on Sue's tombstone. People fucking continue to go "Wow, now he's really lost it. Guess thats what happens when you lose your mind" (paraphrased).

All that being said, I cannot wait for Meltzer to start his JLA run considering he brings as much life to these charcters as Giffen did to the old 80's (and Formerly Known as) JLA, just not as funny.
 
I mentioned the Teen Titans cartoon, then today I find this:

CN announced a number of different movie projects, both original and acquired. The major acquisitions are as follows:

Teen Titans Tokyo: When a high-tech ninja attacks Titans Tower, Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy spring into action. Robin finds out the ninja was sent by a mysterious and menacing Japanese criminal known as Brushogun, and the Teen Titans travel to Tokyo to track the villain down. Teen Titans Tokyo will air in late fall. Can JLU movies be far behind?

And for the record, JLU will end its series run the second week of April. But as said before, don’t be surprised if there are original movies also in the works.

In another interesting twist, CN also announced it will air the just started Marvel direct-to-DVD movies, starting with Ultimate Avengers 1. Plans for this year include plans for Ultimate Avengers 2 and Iron Man. The fourth title, Dr. Strange, will probably air in 2007 as it only gets released to the market late this year.
 
Both Batman Annual 25 and Outsiders 34 were so incredibly dissapointing. Winnick is such a hack.

Detective Comics 817 was glorious though.
 
So, is anyone's LCS doing anything special for Free Comic Book Day? The store I go to usually doesn't, but it's always insanely busy that day. It's weird seeing a crowd and an actual line of customers at my comic book store.

Last year I dressed up in a Spider-man suit and handed out comics along the strip here. A cute girl pinched my spidey-ass.

No clue whats going on this year, but it'll be fun. Hopefully we'll have a comic artist come in and do some freebie art...

Which artists or writers have you had at your store? The shop I go to has a few every year or so to do autograph sessions and sketches. I remember they had Tim Sale, Paul Ryan, and Peter David awhile ago. But I was never able to go. And I highly doubt they would ever be able to get a huge talent to come down here.

Not dressing up, Marvel threw some legal troubles at some shops that did the sae thing, we just didnt advertise it.

As for signings, so far just Sean McKeever really (Sentinel). We need an artist to come in, and we do good enough to have important people here, but the owner sucks at that whole "pr" thing
 
Mark Bagley is a regular customer at my store so I'm sure he'll be doing some signing. Probably some guys from Gaijin Studios too.

Yeah every FCBD Bagley is always in Dr. No's. Most of the time he walks over and signs the covers of the Ulimates Spiderman trades on a regular basis. I have the 6 hardcovers all signed.

I was one of the people that called the 900 number to save Robin( I thought they were going to kill Grayson) I was more a Marvel fan in those days. So when they brought him back, I was really disappointed. But Annual 25 was done in such a believable way, I found myself liking the Red Hood. He tied everything up, and I mean there wasn't anything that was not explain. I don't think he is a hack, he keeps me interested. Detective was pretty good, I agree with that.
 
Does anybody know any good sites that sell older comics? I'm not looking for anything really old, the farthest back being only about 10 years. Thanks in advance.
 
Speaking of older comics.. for some odd reason, Luke Cage: Hero for Hire was always one of my favorite comics. It was so different, and his villains he fought were always so... horribly designed... yet I really loved it.

You also gotta love the yellow suit and chains look. One of my favorite issues is when he travels all the way to Latveria to fight Dr. Doom, because Doom had hired Cage or something like that and then stiffed him on the pay, so Cage travels there to rock Doom's world.

Later on, he teams up with Iron Fist, which was severely WTF, since the two are complete polar opposites.

I was really excited when Wizard brought out the Luke Cage / Iron Fist minimate exclusives, since I'd never see these two in toy form... imagine my surprise now that Marvel Legends has done Iron Fist (just got him recently... very badass) and OLD SCHOOL yellow jacket / chains Luke Cage is coming up.

I've heard Luke Cage was in the Avengers or something now, don't really follow comics, just had alot of memories when I found those old 70's Luke Cage comics I bought in the bargain bin from when I was a kid.

Yeah, in the current Avengers, Cage is part of the team... so is spiderman and spiderwoman.

Heh, what's funny is I found a comic from 1992 with Spider-Man and Sandman :)rofl:) being reserve avengers.

Sandman calls the Avengers because some terrorists are stealing some nuclear materials, Avengers show up and mop the floors with these guys, Cap. America is telling Sandman how "The Avengers don't deal in situations like this due to charters, only cosmic and global stuff" and Sandman flys off the handle and quits.

Seems like everyone back in the day was a "reserve avenger".
 
ill say I have read a ton of comics, but have gotten sick of marvel and and DC. The only stuff I like that they publish are Garth Ennis's stuff. Probably all I touch now is The Punisher (is so so sometimes and great other times) and The Goon, which is probably the best thing on the market now IMHO.

also, Blankets was one of the saddest and most memorable storys i've read. Highly reccomended.

Thanks for the recommendation. I looked the book up on Amazon, and it looks really interesting. Have you also read "Good-Bye, Chunky Rice"?

So comics shouldn't be priced like $4-7?

The comic store near UCI has those prices.
