The Darkness - Gen Discussion & Info
sorry fixed.

I just never recall the game actually being split up into chapters.
Super small spoiler:
When you beat the game, you get a chapter selection option. The game is broken up into five chapters

ya haven't made it that far yet.
Or kill them with the darkness guns.
They still revive when you shoot them with the Darkness Guns.

They do? When you get them it says "you can finally kill the german zombies" or something to that effect. I assumed it meant they stayed down. I couldn't test it because I always eat the hearts.

I'm pretty sure they do...

Nope, they don't. By that point I'd already reached max hearts so I stopped eating. So I just used the darkness guns for that segment.

for those that finished the game:
I knew it was going to happen. The narrative build up, and story type all said it would happen. It was practically the only thing that could happen to give the story meaning. But damnit, I was heartbroken when Jenny died.

Damn game developers... putting emotion into my games. :p ;)

Hey Zewone, I was looking at your score for the game-- and noticed that you got the Helicopter Killer achievement. How'd you manage that? I tried last night, multiple times during the Gun Hill sequence, and couldn't do anything- ended up running away.

Any insight for that one?

You have to wait until you have the black hole power, then when there is a helicopter thats dropping off SWAT at you, shoot the black hole through the skylight.

The storytelling elements in this game are soooo good. I really wish they'd do a Max Payne game in this style. For some reason, I really buy into the characters in this game when I haven't in others in the least bit. I was smiling when watching on the couch, cursing to myself when
they killed Jenny
, and exclaimed, "So, where the fuck is my Minestrone?"

I just beat the game...loved it. I wish there were more cinematic games like this.

The one thing I disliked about the game was all the slow ass walking. I also didn't like how the streets were so barren. It seemed like people and cars only showed up to advance the story.

I hear ya

When that whole sequence was going down I was tense as hell, I wanted to reach into the TV and beat the shit out of the darkness for sitting there and not letting Jackie do anything. I knew it was coming but it was heartbreaking nonetheless. I just wish killing that fucker paulie would have had a better scene to make me feel better.

Since I'm on that anyways, what did you guys think of the ending?

Ergh, I started to have that "I hate this game sooo much" feeling. Then all the sudden it was gone and I am addicted to this game! Ahh! So much fun!

The fucking Darkness stabby impaler thing is awesome!

Well, I now see why nobody really talks about the multiplayer. I almost wish they left it off, but I understand adding it since the general xbox fanbase doesn't understand offline only.

Great campaign though, but glad I only rented it.

Anyone else playing this on a 5.1 setup think the guns sound a little weak ? I have played using two different systems, a cheapy Pioneer and a reasonable harmon, and while the darkness voice sounds freakin awsome and everything else ok .. the guns sound a little muffled. ..

I'm playing on a pretty decent 5.1 setup and everything else is way quieter than the darkness voice and death screen. It makes it a pain in the ass to play at night when I'm trying to keep things quiet for the neighbors.

On the note of sound, there is definately an issue with voices and standard built-in tv sound. I had to turn on subtitles simply because it was near impossible to hear anyone over background noises in the subway.

Ok ... nice to know its not just me .. its definately not a game breaking issue and I have learned to deal with it .. just seemed a bit strange at the time.

Just finished the game. Pretty disappointed since I have been waiting for this since it had been announced years ago.

Graphics and voice acting were great, but the slow walking and some other things really annoyed me.

That was everybody's main complaint with Riddick. No multiplayer. Starbreeze wasn't going to let another game out the gate without it.

I'm enjoying Campaign. I don't know where to go right now because its so freaking dark. And a turtle walks WAY faster than this guy.
But its still fun.
AND online is disturbingly laggy.

Rented it this morning and have been playing pretty much nonstop, with a movie break inbetween, but get just past the part where you
move the bell in hell
and the game freezes on me. Ah well, save more for tommorrow. ;)

Game is a ton of fun for something that I originally thought wasn't going to be good at all, glad I read a little of the thread here and got your impressions to change my mind!

I like how there's a Bioshock ad on the back of the manual. That's definitely the next 360 game I'm getting.

Am I the only one who finds the script/voice acting absolutely horrible in every possible way? Jenny is all that is good, Paulie is all that is evil, Jackie burns with generic rage- yech. I expected is to be along the lines of Preacher or Hellboy, but instead it makes Max Payne look like Sheakspeare.

Yes.

Why do people hate chapter 2? I just finished it and liked it better than chapter 1. It was A LOT more stylish, the open foggy terrain was a lot scarrier and more interesting to play, and the new guns/darkness abilities added a lot more to the combat. It was also the first time in the game that I was at all interested in the story. So what wasn't to like about it?

I was the same. I liked the family part as well as the design... everything just seemed better than part 1.
Just beat it, really cool game.

Any difference in the ending if you let paulie live?
I tried to let him live and he started shooting me with a pistol. It also wouldn't let me walk out the door, so I assume you have to kill him.

...

Chapter two would have been as good if chapter one didn't exist.

The contrast of the two is what makes them both work.

Yeah.

Yeah, you do.. which sucks.

Damn, I'm really tempted to read all your spoilers, but I haven't had much time with the game lately. Quick progress check for those that finished, how far am I?
I just got into the City Hall Station after escaping Shrote and his helicopter on the apartment rooftop.
(Sorry if your progress is shown in the game menu. I just hate putting the game in and not being able to put much time into it.)

About another 4-5 hours left.

I found the voice acting just fine. In fact it was very good to me. I think the bigger problem was that their character animation needed work, especially facial animation. The characters didn't act out what their voices were intoning, so that led to a disconnect that could end up being cheesy.

After beating the game I can't even recall what, if any, reason Paulie had for turning his goons on Jackie in the first place. That's what I meant about generic villains and a bland script.

I otherwise lked the game alright- as a rental. It was too inconsistant for me. I thought the creeping dark was a lot of fun, but I pretty much used that and the darkness guns for pretty much the whole game with rare exception. It was far too easy since enemies were too dumb to follow you for more than a room or two. I thought the game was going to be slow and methodical, but instead it was slow and repetitive. Not unfun exactly, but miles away from what it could have been had the enemy AI been on par with that of FEAR. Anyone else feel this way?

I'll have to agree with that. If you're looking for challenging gameplay and firefights, look elsewhere. This game is mostly about story and atmosphere with decent/mediocre shooter and magic power gameplay.

There were a ton of inconsitencies in the game, and it's pretty clear that they didn't have time to finish it. The darkling AI is very spotty, and even the dark vision has problems working, so that in some areas after you shoot out all the lights to gain an advantage, you can't see anything of the environment, so you run around hugging the walls until you stumble through a door.

You also notice how they never actually put in a boss encounter, or any encounters beyond standard humans rushing at you en masse?

mid/late game spoiler
Even that Hell 2 boss at the end of the tank ride segment was ridiculously simple, just keep shooting the two MGs into the monster's mouth, and you were still attached to the tank so that's all you could do really. In a "making of" video it shows that same monster as having guns strapped on, so likely there would have been a big monster fight on foor

Just because you can't recall a reason for Paulie's betrayal, doesn't mean there wasn't one.

Yep. It was discussed at basically the beginning of the game. Not sure how he missed it.

Just finished it a bit ago. Very good game, but I'm glad I didn't buy it. This pretty much defines "summer rental".

I'm not even done with it yet and already want to play through it again. Good game. Can't wait for Bioshock

I beat this on Normal a few days ago and I must say that I am thouroughly impressed with the entire experience. I really took my time with it the first go round. Trying to do all the side missions (which I didn't, about 80% away from heart of gold), Getting some of the collectables, and carefully removing light sources from areas that I'd fight in.

I just started it again yesterday on Hard after fooling around in the MP, and at first using the same tactics that I used on Normal was getting me killed. Now instead of waiting and killing all the lights, I just bum rush them and it actually works out better and faster.

It really is a great game-- and the MP is fun if you get a lag-lite server, but it certainly is short. But isn't that a true testament to it? I normally never play single player campaigns more than once in an FPS--but I'm back in it again, and still loving it.
