The "Dem Boys" Briscoe Brothers Wrestling Thread

Hometown curse strikes again.

Lawler making that weird "urruruurghhh" sound every time Kane shows up now is starting to annoy me. I do like Kane being Palpatine to Cena's Anakin though.
It appears that the trademark for "Wrestlefest" was for use in video games.

Please, lord, let it be true.
Day one. 5 copies.

As noted yesterday, WWE has registered to trademark WrestleFest, the name of a popular WWF arcade game. WWE is not bringing back the WrestleFest title. The reason for the trademark filing is WWE got wind of an outside project that was in the works. WWE sent a cease-and-desist letter to those working on the project and filed the trademark.

.

Yeah, someone was working on reviving it over at wrestlefestrevival.com .. He has a YouTube channel and has a few videos but it's just movement tests and videos of playtests.. Nothing worth showing off. He was working on figuring out a way to rip the sprites from the game.

Huh. They have enough trademarks in the game other than the title WrestleFest that re-registering the trademark seems an unnecessary step if they want to file an injunction against the revival.

People taking on hobby/vanity projects like this need to do a better job looking into the trademarks in the first place. It's their fault if that's all that got in the way of the project continuing and they simply didn't file.

It's the streets of rage debacle all over again.

watching the Undertaker thing on nflx is sort of confusing. Was it just the attitude era logo that they're no longer allowed to use? The stacked WWF logo is all over the place without being blotted out, and there's some cursing in there too which I thought was kind of odd.

Other random thoughts:
The 1st Kane vs Undertaker match at mania was not nearly epic enough.
The HBK hell in a cell match was awesome.
Pre-implant and facial surgery Chyna is really weird looking.
Mick Foley works his ass off.
Paul Bearer was incredibly annoying.
That straps across the chest thing was probably his coolest entrange thing (except for the dumb cowl thingy that was there for awhile) and I kind of want to make one if I ever get into a black metal band again.
The supernatural stuff between him and Kane was totally hokey but really neat at the same time.
While mentioned before, it serves a great reminder that a simple prop gate around the ring is better than this stupid hockey wall with enough room around the ring to drive a car.
Undertaker has a fairly limited set of moves but makes them all look very good.
The ropes used to be really loose!
Was it just the attitude era logo that they're no longer allowed to use?
The scratch logo, yes. They also can't say WWF but can say World Wrestling Federation.

why that particular logo and not the other ones? That seems like a really odd stipulation for name infringement.

It has to do w/ the agreement they had w/ the World Wildlife Fund. Changing the logo to the 'scratch' logo violated the terms of the agreement, thus the lawsuit, thus video footage that is forever ruined.

WWF (the Fund hereater) easily established prior usage of their trademark in court, but allowed WWF to keep all their items under a grandfather clause (I presume - they or the court did). Updating those trademarks nullified the grandfather agreement, which is why the bulk of those trademarks are no longer able to be used.

The great irony? This was all decided in a UK court, but you can still buy unedited "WWF"-era DVDs in the UK - the SilverVision releases, which are by and large straightforward Coliseum Video products rereleased on DVD, have no video or audio edits whatsoever (aside from small edits for time). There's no comparable legal option in the US.

I've probably told this story before, but I had friends at Bowling Green who hunted down a WrestleFest arcade cabinet on Craigslist in Detroit. It was missing all of the marquees but the display was flawless and the sticks all worked. They bought it, rented a Uhaul to pick it up, and hauled it upstairs to their dorm room with the help of their RA on the condition he'd be able to play it from time to time.

He's married now, but one of those guys still has the cabinet in his garage almost ten years later. Good times.

There's a Barcade down the street from me with a WrestleFest machine. The monitor is yellowed from the years, and I don't think all the buttons still work. But other than that, it's a peach. And still 25¢ per.

Silvervision's blu rays are always region locked, though, and that pisses me off, because some of the PPV's saw Blu release in the UK (MITB, Survivor Series, TLC) and weren't released on blu here in the states.

Thankfully, the Cena/CM Punk match is available on the new Best PPV matches of 2011 Blu, but still.. it's annoying.

Amazon has listed Elimination Chamber 2012 on DVD at $10.49. Lock in your pre-orders if you're interested! They've got Royal Rumble 2012 listed on Blu for $20.. I went ahead and locked in the price.

They also have Macho Man's DVD listed for under $7 (as of right now). If you have Netflix, it's available on there in its entirety.

Really? I'd buy the bluray just for that match alone. Thanks for the heads up.
Randy Orton injured at SD taping tonight.
As noted earlier, Randy Orton was injured at last night's SmackDown tapings in Indianapolis during the Falls Count Anywhere main event against Wade Barrett. Orton has been removed from this week's live events.

Word backstage was that Orton suffered some sort of back injury and it has to do with at least one of the discs in his back. Orton could miss up to 6 months of in-ring time, causing him to miss WrestleMania 28. An official update from WWE should be available soon.

Perhaps this means D. Brine will carry the belt at least through WM.

I figured since WWE reported it on twitter that it was a work. Huh.

How often has Orton been injured now? Jeez, the guy is made out of balsa wood.

Really, though - whatever. He's boring.

This is actually pretty sweet timing, though. Now WWE is fucked because they were just about to freak out and move everything (titlewise) back to Cena-Orton so we could watch reruns all the way up to WM28. And they can't.

Something else I just thought of (only slightly related): did WWE stop touring for their customary 7-10 day stretch this Christmas? Or have they actually increased their touring and not had any stops at all? I don't recall the guys being given any breaks. Oddly enough, you work people harder, and they get injury prone - your 'no shit' news of the week.

Don't tell them they can't do it; they'll figure out a way to prove you wrong.

Special Arm Wrestling match for Heavyweight Championship
Special Wheelchair Race match for WWE Title
etc., don't test them

They were talking about moving Punk to SD.. With Orton out, they may go into panic mode and go ahead and take the title off of him and move him to SD ASAP.

I got it off PSN for pretty cheap. I can't remember the price but it came with both the SD and HD copies.

Watched Michaels/Angle from WM 21 and their Iron Man match from Raw homecoming yesterday. Good stuff. Going to watch the Vengeance match and the 01/06 RAW match tonight.

One of my Xmas presents was a ticket to Smackdown in Las Vegas for Tuesday, Jan 17th.

I've only ever been to one live wrestling event which was Wrestlemania 19 in Seattle.

I feel like a dork saying this, but I'm nervous about flying. (Never flown before in my life, and I live in Oregon.) ALSO, I need some serious suggestions about sign(s) I should make!

Thoughts?

Oregon to Vegas should be really quick. Nothing to worry about - I end up sleeping on almost every flight I'm on.

I haven't gone to a live event since a Raw taping a couple of years ago in Anaheim. Since it's an SD taping, know that anything smarky or not storyline related will either get confiscated or cut from TV. I'd go with a big cardboard bag sign with eye holes for Cody.

You know that Orton back injury they're reporting? Yeah, but no. He failed another wellness test, and if you're keeping score, that'd be strike #3.

Oh for Christ's sake. Strike 3 or not, he ain't going nowhere. They'll "punish" him by giving him a month off and a stern "cut it out" talk.

Edit- Or 6 months off apparently...

It was announced at tonight's Smackdown house show in Detroit that Randy Orton will be out for six months. Refunds were offered to anyone who wanted to get them at the show.

A simple sign does the trick.

Anyone remember the second RAW The Rock appeared on earlier this year? The one in Chicago? I was there and on TV multiple times with the big ROCKY sign. Too bad the girl holding the C half-assed it the majority of the time.

I'm the C in this picture, but I believe I was the Y on TV.

To be fair, theddt.com is a message board and this is all I found:

Jubs (New Member Join Nov 2011) - Orton and Wellness Sitting in a Tree (8:03 PM)
...they'll have about 60 days to get married because he failed his wellness test.

Reject (Admin) - Jubs with the scoops! If it was anyone else I'm be sceptically, but you hang out with Super Dragon so I'm taking as legit. Really lucky for Orton he wasn't suspended in 2007 when he was named in the Signature Pharmacy bust or he'd have been fired and be on his way to the Impact Zone.

So...yeah.

My only claim to fame sign-wise is on the Invasion PPV - I'm holding up the RVD "Whole Dam Show" sign as my two friends were waving a pair of giant cardboard thumbs on wrapping paper tubes.

My claim to fame sign wise was getting one saying "Heyman Likes Soap" briefly on TV during Smackdown. As far as Orton and the whole wellness policy debacle let's wait and see. So far the only source "reporting" this is one person on some unknown message forum. Until more credible sources such as Keller, Meltzer, etc report it then to me its lame rumor talk at best.

After wathcing the whole series over the past two days, I'd rank the Michaels/Angle matches as follows:

1. Wrestlemania 21
2. 30 Minute Iron Man Match (Raw Homecoming)
3. Vengeance 2005
4. 01/16/06 RAW
You know that Orton back injury they're reporting? Yeah, but no. He failed another wellness test, and if you're keeping score, that'd be strike #3.
I don't seem to recall the first two. Also, RvB is right. He's getting fired from WWE, and I'm Zack Ryder.

I also don't need any further evidence to know that it's a farce of a program. We already had R-Truth and Sin Cara's delayed suspensions earlier this year.

EDIT: Tried watching the "History of the WWE Championship" on Netflix today while working from home. I stopped midway through disc 1. Once they got to the Hogan era, it felt like they were just giving us all of the WM main events. I hate that - I bought the WM box set, and these matches are all fucking over every DVD set already. Also, Jim Ross' calling Pedro Morales vs Ivan Koloff was odd - not because of the generational gap, but because I felt like he was both explaining the Catch style of wrestling and apologizing for it at the same time. It was a pretty solid match, too - making his deferential tone that much more peculiar.

Another thing I noticed - Vince McMahon never learned the name of a single goddamned wrestling hold. His "what a maneuver!" bullshit extends to his announcing in the late 1970's when his father ran the company. It's like if Eric Bischoff jammed his ignorant, know-nothing-about-wrestling kid down the fan's...oh, forget it.

I had a CAG sign at Raw years ago. I was sitting right on the aisle directly across from the hard camera so it was on screen for most of the show. I'm pretty sure someone posted a screen cap here in whichever thread was active at the time.

His first suspension was in 2006 (marijuana). They covered that one with Angle "breaking his ankle". His second, though he wasn't suspended (I think), would have been his being named in the various pharmaceuticals he was getting from 2004-2007.

Honestly, I get his shoulder injuries mixed with wellness suspensions.

Bleacher Report and Lords of Pain pulled the Orton story so I'm figuring it was BS.

Here's Orton's history - http://www.wrestlingnewsworld.com/wwe-news/list_of_known_wwe_wellness_violations_suspensions.php

Randy Orton - Suspended twice; in April 2006 and August 2006. What lead to Orton's first suspension was when he decided to openly smoke a rolled marijuana cigarette backstage with people present at the March 28, 2006 SmackDown taping in the Kemper Arena in Kansas City the week prior to WrestleMania. An official (Bruce "Brother Love" Prichard) found out about it and notified other people in management. Orton was already in hot water with management over several past infractions and that action was the straw that broke the camel's back. On April 4, 2006, Orton was suspended for 60 days for "unprofessional conduct." While suspended, Orton spent four weeks at an anger management clinic in Atlanta. Orton returned to action on June 7, 2006 for a feud with Kurt Angle.

Orton was suspended again in mid-August 2006 for a Wellness Policy violation. After the liver enzyme deal broke out, which ruined a number of matches for the Great American Bash in July 2006, Vince McMahon made the decision to dock pay from all Wellness Policy violators for however long the suspension would last, while keeping them on the road in the meantime. McMahon wasn't fond of the suspensions ruining ongoing storylines, so that's why he made his decision. Violators would continue to work television, but be kept off house shows. At the time, Orton was in the midst of a high-profile feud with Hulk Hogan as they were building towards a match at SummerSlam, and there was no way that they were going to remove him from television. Orton kept appearing on television, but without pay. He was removed from house shows for a little over a month. His last match at a house show event was on August 12, 2006. He didn't appear at another house show event until September 20, 2006 during a tour in Mexico. To save face, Orton claimed that his house show hiatus was due to him moving into a new home with his fiancee -- which is actually true, however, he was indeed serving a suspension during this time frame as well.

It would appear that Orton has two strikes against him, but more than likely, only has one strike against him. In the original WWE drug policy that was introduced on February 27, 2006, when it came to marijuana, if not legally prescribed by a physician, any use of it would fit under violation of the new policy. The original policy stated, "Any Talent who is arrested, convicted or who admits to a violation of law relating to use, possession, purchase, sale or distribution of prohibited drugs will be in material breach of contract and subject to immediate dismissal." Orton was indeed in possession of marijuana, seeing how he was openly smoking a rolled marijuana cigarette backstage at the SmackDown taping the week before WrestleMania 23. However, the company doesn't test for marijuana, not to mention that the company labeled his suspension as "unprofessional conduct." So well, it would appear as though that Orton's first suspension was more of a conduct violation in WWE's eyes, rather than a Wellness Policy violation because it didn't involve law enforcement like in the case of Rob Van Dam. Orton doesn't appear to be danger of being terminated from the company after what WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt said in a recent interview.

McDevitt stated in an interview with Newsday last night that eleven wrestlers were being suspended for violating the WWE Wellness Policy. McDevitt noted than ten of the eleven wrestlers were first-time offenders and that only one individual was a second-time offender. The second-time offender will be suspended for 60 days. He didn't say anything about a possible third-time offender who would be in danger of being fired. Of the twenty-one wrestlers named as clients of the corrupt Internet drug firm Signature Pharmacy, only Randy Orton and Chris Masters have previous Wellness Policy violations on their respective records -- at least that we know of. However, the only wrestler that has been confirmed of purchasing drugs over the Internet after the WWE Wellness Policy was implemented in February 2006 is Randy Orton. Masters wasn't listed in the Sports Illustrated article so he's not totally guilty yet. Sports Illustrated noted that Orton received Somatropin, Nandrolone and Stanozolol through Signature Pharmacy from September 2004 until the firm was busted in February 2007. Stanozolol and Nandrolone are anabolic steroids. Somatropin is a Growth Hormone drug. Considering that Sports Illustrated's findings on Orton would be a direct violation of the WWE Wellness Policy, more than likely, Randy Orton is the second-time offender McDevitt noted that will be suspended for 60 days.

Orton was in hot water last April after causing $30,000 worth of damage to a hotel room in Germany while WWE was on tour. Orton was sent home from the European tour after he was found passed out in the wrecked hotel room. He was never suspended. He was simply ordered to pay restitution for the damage he had caused.

Chris Masters was the one who was guilty of the second suspension if I remember correctly.
