The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Gen. Discussion & Info

Well after months of having Oblivion sit in the case, I booted up my original character(who never did the storyline.) And all is well except it I try to get anywhere near cloudruler temple the damn thing locks up. fast travel freezes during load, and running freezes at an invisible area. Cleaned the disc, cleared patches, and still nothing. Might have to call and see if Rhino still honors the lifetime warranty with receipt now that they are GS..

edit: Well apparently randomly filling your cache with other stuff fixes the problem. Played a few other 360 games and now it loads fine..go figure.
Sucks when you have to play the game the way it's supposed to be played huh?
If I want to dupe stuff to let me enjoy the game more, what's the big problem? I paid $63 damn dollars to play the game, I think I should be able to dupe if I want.

If there's no multiplayer aspect to a game, who cares?

I never said there was a problem. Dupe away. I don't give a shit. I was just pointing out that it's funny that you complain about not being able to exploit a glitch, that's all.

I went back to my game to finish up the Thieves Guild stuff and get all 1000 achievements. Total play time: 185+ hours. I was surprised it took me a while to get reaccustomed to the controls, but it had been about 8 monhts since I last played.

With that done, turns out I'm reviewing Shivering Isles. Looking forward to it, obviously -- especially since I've basically put Crackdown to bed.
SI is up under "all downloads".
sweet! As soon as I saw your post, I ran to my room and started downloading. yay!

hope it's worth the 2400 points.

I really want to wait on my free points to arrive, but this thing is gonna be tempting me so much now that its actually available. Must...resist...

You could wait for the Platinum Hits version, which may have all the downloadable options, for around $30. It may hit by the end of this year or early next.

$30 for downloadable content? No thanks. I didn't bite on Tekken 5, and I'm not biting on this.

Tekken 5? Did I miss something?

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is a downloadable title for the PS3, but it's $20. Sorry for any confusion, I was just griping about the high prices of downloadable content across all platforms.
Downloading it now. I imagine it went up today since Live is going to be down for maintenance tomorrow (not sure how long or what times).
From Major Nelson:
P.S. Thanks to everyone on the team who worked to get this [Shivering Isles] out before the Xbox Live Maintenance so that you would have something to do during the downtime.
So yup, you're right.

Just played it for a few hours, and been having fun. I started forging my madness armor, and it looks damn cool. I hope I can find the sword matrix soon. Hopefully it'll be more powerful than Umbra. Also after I beat the Gatekeeper I had the choice to go to Mania or Dementia. I chose Dementia, and was wondering if you can eventually go to both or if it's a permanant choice. I think I'll try to backtrack later.

I'm really impressed so far. It seems way more substantial than I ever expected. I love the design of the new places and enemies, and don't even get me started on the tone. ;)

wow... the beauty is amazing in this game... so far it's as if you took oblivion and set it further into the fantasy realm. Also, when you get to sheogorath, save your game. Then hit him and you'll get some kicks ;)
30+ hours for ~30bucks(less with deals and such) is pretty good for a console game. It's heavy for DLC, but pretty fair for a full fledged expansion pack.
From reviews I read it's more like 18 Hours, and often times I find myself chugging through things faster than that. Like knights of the Nine did not take 10 hours for sure. That's why i'm a bit skeptical. Also all the dungeons in all the expansions pretty much have looked the same which really bugs me. Don't get me wrong, I love oblivion and played it to death, but after awhile the dungeons get so repetitive and the environments feel stale.

Now my question is if the environments in shivering isles are actually quite different looking or are they just redesigned dungeons like we saw in all the other packs like knights of the nine?
part of me wants to download this, but the other part of me knows I will never get around to playing it.
Yup, me too. Same with symphony of the night.

I downloaded this and now have been trying to boot it up. However, I'm stuck at the title screen with a window up that says "Loading extra content. Please wait." It was like that for a good 20 minutes. Figuring it was locked up, I turned off the 360 and restarted. Now it's back stuck on that screen. Any advice?

With no Live for the near future and me leaving for several days on Wednesday, I'm already pressed for time to review this beast. I really don't want to have to delete that big ol' file, but I also don't want to lose my 185 hours of play time on my saves.

EDIT: I cleared my cache and it worked. Here's how to do it, should you encounter the same problem: Go to the system blade and then memory. Press Y on the HDD, then press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X. Once you do this a blade will pop up saying: This will perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue? Pick yes or no.

EDIT 2: Okay, the game works now, but I don't think it's recognizing SI. The Download section is grayed out under Options, and I waited about 5 in-game "days" for SI to start, which it didn't.

Well you have a tiny problem. From experience, DLC seems to require one of the patches, which have all been cleared by clearing your cache. So you have to wait for live to go back online to get the latest patch, then it will recognize all your DLC again. If you happen to have any content already (mehrunes razor, etc.) and you have an item from it, DO NOT save as you will lose the items once you get things working.

Oh that's fuggin' tedious... so for $30, Bethesda couldn't have been bothered to sort this stuff out prior to launch?
Your best bet is to get two 1200pts cards at Best Buy with a GGC that way the expansion comes out to be about $23
you mean 1600? Do they even make 1200 point cards?

well they did..via a patch. But if you delete the patches and have to redownload them, you kinda need live to be up and running.

Just finished Xedilian. That was hilarious. Dispatching the adventurers was entertaining. Also got the Dawnfang/Duskfang sword, and it's pretty kickass.

You sound just like my contact at Bethesda who called me after I emailed him about it! Apparently, Microsoft jumped the gun by putting the game up yesterday. As I hadn't played Oblivion since the new patch went up, I was unable to get SI to work. This, after sleeping about 12 days in-game and starting a whole new game, escaping the Imperial Sewers, and sleeping a few more days. Sometimes gaming can be a pain in my ass...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for later this afternoon when Live goes...well, live.

I played a bit last night and I already am liking it more than the regular Oblivion quests... mainly because it seems the devs could do anything they wanted in the game this time around. The NPCs are alot more interesting as well and it's nice to hear a different voice set finally.

To answer your question: everything other than game mechanics is pretty much entirely new... nothing looks familiar at all from all that I have played... including the dungeons.
Can someone refresh my memory on how to clear the cache, or did they fix that with an update.
easiest way(without having to time pressing a button with the game loading) is:

at the dashboard go to the system blade > memory. highlight your hdd and press Y.

Then press the following code in. X X Left Bumper Right Bumper X X. It will ask you if you want to clear the cache , choose yes. All this does basically is delete all the patches and temp stuff. Any DLC and saves will not be harmed at all. Load times may be a bit longer at first, while it recaches things.

edit: I personally can never time the "Hold A" method properly for it to work.

Not to be a tool, but it was literally on the SAME PAGE as your post. Open thine game-weary eyes.

Anyone know how to go about moving an NPC that has decided to pace back and forth instead of leading me to the area he wants me to go? This quest NPC just goes up and down the stairs over and over. Can't interact with him any futher than I have, and I can't push him off.

I even tried punching the guy, but now all he does is pace up and down with his sword drawn.

Thanks, that helps, but I was looking for something like you hold some button when the Bethesda Software logo comes up
