The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 11/11/11
Of course this really only applies later in the game, after quite a few level ups. You can't take cool looking stuff that matches together over more powerful items right off the bat, or you will be reloading your saves an awful lot.

Once you get pretty powerful though, making a guy with a completed set of armor + weapons to match sounds appealing though. I look forward to having multiple sets of matching armor + weapons once I get a little higher level on this character.
everyone plays they way they want, my caster wear just robes and never has the time to cast armor spells...just a bow, a summons, and a lot kiting. I used to get killed with one 2H power attack, but I've invested a lot in health and my armored gloves and boots seem to help midigate the damage bit. I'm also playing smarter. So really, you could get away with wearing just rags and plain jewelry and still survive to end game. (just bring a lot of potions)

Fashionista or not.

True. If you are a mage-type character, wearing robes (of the magical variety) through the whole game is very possible, but you really have to be good at magic and play smart for it to be pulled off. Wearing all matching ARMOR would be easier to survive, but wearing robes all the time is really a cool thing to do.

backpeddaling and casting Frost Rune on the floor works wonders...especially when you know if they catch up to you you're going to get the reload screen.

...but I guess I'm good at magic. (snickers)
anybody ever have to fight a dragon that flew backwards the whole time?
Haven't had that as I'm not updating with the patch yet. I did, however, have an epic battle with a Blood Dragon inside of Windhelm! It was pretty sweet! Is this a common thing?

Crap, accidentally downloaded the update while distracted on the phone.
Buggy Dragons and no magic resistence, just like people said.

Started a new character until the fix things.

downloaded patch (as mentioned earlier), only encountered 2 backward flying dragons...tried to fight it but the erratic flying pattern was too crazy for any spells or arrows to land so I just reloaded and walked a different way. saw one dragon flying in place, didn't move until I was within range then (See beginning of my post).

I play a breton, and while I'm not sure if the MR is working or bugged i'm at the point where if the enemies don't out right overwhelm me I hardly have time to use Dragonskin and notice if my natural resistance to magic is working or not. If anything it's making the game more challenging. I am happy to see arrows finally fading away as well as dragon corpses not dropping from the sky infront of towns I've been to.

i've fought dragons in towns, haven't fought dragons inside of towns that have a loading door though. i.e. whiterun, windhelm. (as opposed to Riverwood, dawnstar)

Just when I thought I've seen it all, a new monster hurls itself at me or I find a really cool piece of armor or weaponary that is completely unique to what i've seen in shops. Sweeeet...

Ugh... the long wait for worthwhile DLC begins. Finally finished my first playthrough with a full achievement score. Definitely my game of the year without question.

How much time have you put in on the game? And how many quests have you yet to do? I read a quote from one of the developers who said there are a never-ending amount of quests, like they're randomly generated.

I feel kind of ridiculous buying deals from Best Buy and other places this holiday season, since I only seem to want to play Skyrim now that I own it (finally broke down and bought it last week).

My final save clocked me in at a staggering 197 hours. I still can't believe it myself. The most I have EVER done for a single playthrough in any RPG ever. Most of that was spent doing guild related and miscellaneous quests that didn't matter in the greater scheme of things while achievement hunting. If I weren't going for achievements, building up stats, buying houses, etc. instead of actually finishing the game I would have completed it in less than 40 easily. I think I have at least a good 8 - 10 side quests left and probably double/triple that amount in miscellaneous. This game literally never ends so once I reached the 125 mark I knew I had to push on with the main story or risk never playing it again. Ultimate time sink thy name is Skyrim.

if you had a separate timer for how much time you spent organzing your equipment, loot, and lugging stuff back and forth to sell...you'd probably cut that hours invested in 1/2. but yeah, this game is awesome and i still find new stuff all the time when I'm just about tired of vanilla...they throw undead sprinkles at me.
Ultimate time sink thy name is Skyrim.
If the game wasn't so damn good, I'd feel bad about not working on my massive backlog.

Not for me, but I'm one of those "weird" fans into those "relic" RPG elements like inventory management, stats and proper loot and commerce mechanics so I sort of have negotiating it all down to a science. The only thing that ever bothered me was the game dictating how much gold you could invest in a shop and which ones you could invest in. I was too lazy to fully level up my speech.
Question:

Has anyone actually finished the Thieves Guild questline? I mean, C'mon, who's throwing that away?
*Raises hand*

I didn't have a reason in keeping it myself. The mechanics for
lockpicking
in this game are almost exactly like Fallout's only a hell of a lot more forgiving IMO. Besides having it in your possession doesn't count toward the
Daedric Artifact
achievement and tools are plentiful/dirt cheap anyway.
If the game wasn't so damn good, I'd feel bad about not working on my massive backlog.
I envy you. I wish I had a backlog to distract me from how boring the next couple of months are going to be until I get something worthwhile to play. For now until the itch hits me to start my female samurai profile I'm stuck recycling old games or playing those I don't particularly enjoy. I have a feeling next summer is going to be even more uneventful than this years. ;\

idk, i can play a bit of skyrim before work and during those 30 mins it's me selling/smithing/sorting, and then plotting out my next map marker. I'm at the point where I don't even lewt certain things because it's not worth the weight/gold. I got the 100k achievement and now gp seems a bit useless save for training and buying houses...but I cant seem to stop organizing crap in my house.

Ah... I understand where you're coming from now. I gave up on trying to fix up houses when I realized my crib in Whiterun was where I planned my hero to settle down. It didn't help the place was smack dab in the middle of everything you could possibly need within a few feet either. Everything else except the V. Hall in the dwarven city felt like a downgrade and the only reason I didn't move there is because you honestly can't beat living next door to a blacksmith. Whiterun spoiled the hell out of me. It felt like a home whereas the rest felt like property I just owned in cities that really didn't want me there.

Hmmm, I wonder what comes out in a couple months... ME3 maybe? ;)

You envy me for my backlog, I envy you for the time you have to play games. Between work/wife/kid/house chores, there's just not enough time in the day. (On the flip side, I'm really glad I didn't have this many awesome games to play back when I was in college. I would've flunked out for sure.)

LOL. Funny how that works, huh? ME3 is a guaranteed purchase, but that's more out of loyalty to the first game than anything else. I'm playing for the lore and to finish my profiles. Biggest issue at the moment is restraining myself from the CE solely for the Normandy XBL ship. I desperately need something worthy to replace the Mako for my avatar.

Gameplay wise my eyes remain glued to Bioshock Infinite until a Fallout 4 announcement drops. I'm praying for multiplayer of some kind to weasel its way in somehow, but judging from how it was handled and received in BS2 it probably won't happen. Sucks because I still play BS2 from time to time and will alternate between it, MW3 and Dead Space 2 until next year. ;(

Hey 100xp, thanks for answering my question a few pages back.

SO anyway I'm playing it on the PS3 and I'm pretty far through the winter hold mage college quest-line and I have a problem.

I'd recommend not revealing this tag if you have not completed all or most of these quests.

I got the staff and then used it on the orb and fought arcano. I died in the battle and now the staff will not work. Has anyone else encountered this? I'm going to try to load an earlier save and hope that works but Id like Bethesda to patch it soon. :(

Really? I think it is way more difficult in Skyrim... Maybe it's because my skill isn't very high up yet, but the harder ones are a bitch! I always use up my stash on 'em!

That is quite an odd glitch that I haven't seen too much about either (as in, not very common it appears). Reloading the save might be the only way to go, since without the staff you cannot defeat Acano (as far as I know).

I will give you this hint for defeating him though, don't try to attack him relentlessly. He takes little to no damage from you, just using the staff on the Eye of Magnus and letting "Magical Anomalies" or whatever they're called kill him is the way to go.

Skill definitely plays a factor, but not as much as I thought. At least compared to Oblivion and the Fallout games. I was absolutely terrible with timing for Oblivion and the Fallout games felt like the coding enjoyed dicking you around on even the simplest locks regardless of level. Here I rarely had to use more than 5 on anything lower than Master. Even for those 10 was the max before I had a good idea of where the sweet spot was. Usually what was inside wasn't worth the trouble, but either way patience goes a long way.

By the time you've finished the questline though you're well stocked in lockpicking and pickpocket boosting gear so your stats no longer mattered. Hell... once they make your new status official you receive
a necklace that practically guarantees you'll pass every persuade check.
Well worth the trouble since it also
counts as armor and boosts your speech by 10%.
I made a killing with merchants stacking it with the
Clavicus Vile mask
wrapping up the 100k achievement.

I love myself that Clavicus Vile mask.

Dark Brotherhood reward discussion:

Combine the Clavicus Vile gear with the Jester gear you get from killing the jester in the Dark Brotherhood, and you got yourself insane money making skills!

I didn't even think about that combination man. Thanks.
Cicero
irked me that much. I was too busy being ecstatic the game let me finally
kill him
. I heard he was a great follower to those that
let him live
but I wouldn't trust that guy for a split second. The mask itself is beyond bad ass. I felt like a shogun wearing it. Not sure my next profile will have much use for it, but if I can find an armor set that suits the look I'm all for maining it.

I didn't even consider letting him live, didn't think anything of him and just didn't like him. Would probably have been powerful, but I liked his gear so its not like I got nothing out of it.

As for the mask, not sure what could go with it. Steel armor would fit but it might be a bit bland to go with it...Ebony is probably too dark as well.
Update on 3rd patch and is it broken also? (Saw a post over the weekend that PC people were complaining about it.)
Yeah PC people haven't been too happy with the patch. Obviously console players don't have it yet, but I'm not too optimistic.

np, i made the mistake of remaking a new character based on the fact I thought I invested poorly in stats and perks early on...there's really little difference in makes in the later game unless you have OCD and are playing on master level difficulty perhaps. glad i could help.

Nothing's changed in the past few weeks I think.

I actually have some screencaps of it with Steel Plate and Ebony. However, Ebony Armor has a clipping bug where you see the neckline (more obvious on some headware) so
the Ebony Mail you get from the Boethia quest
would be an option if that bothers you.

I have three characters so far:

lvl 42 High Elf (focused on Destruction, Alteration, Illusion and Restoration, w/Archery support)
lvl 58 Khajiit (focused on Sneak, Pickpocketing, and Archery, w/dual Dagger support)
lvl 28 Nord (focused on One-Handed w/Shield, Heavy Dragonplate Armor, Enchanting, and Conjuration/Restoration support)

My main goal with each character was to fully flesh out two of the three major categories of Combat (Archery, Melee, Magic), while completely ignoring the third. In past Elder Scrolls games I've mainly stuck to just one path for any character I made, but there seems to be a bigger emphasis on having a Plan B - or alternate combat strategy - regardless of what build you want to make (at least on the harder difficulties). I've also made it a point to have a companion with me as often as possible - to reduce the amount of "fuck I have to go store/sell these Dragon Bones/Scales so I can walk" situations that pop up while trying to complete quests AND because of the general coolness of some of the characters. My favorite companion to travel with by far is Aranea Ienith (from the
Azura's Star
quest).

i don't see any reason why you'd trade in one copy in for another console's version. did they say xbox was getting more patches or special dlc down the road? graphically there might be a slight noticable difference between the two but unless you're not really losing anything on the trade...why bother?

There can be, but I assume that it may also happen on 360. Honestly, I guess it's up to you. If your PS3 copy is broken severely, and you think that a 360 copy would let you play correctly, go for it.
There can be, but I assume that it may also happen on 360.
It's pretty much a problem with the PS3 as of right now. One of the devs answered some questions about the issue, there was a thread over at GAF talking about it. The problem with the PS3 is the way the RAM is divided, unlike the 360/PC, it's split into two sections, and there may be memory leaks in Skyrim as a result. The whole thing is too complicated for me to understand, but as I understand it, while the 360 & PC could also have issues, the biggest problems are on the PS3 due to its unique architecture.

Well, if it is pretty much unheard of on 360, then I'd say that he swap 'em.
Will this hurt my PS3 or just cause me to lose saves?
Nah, shouldn't hurt your PS3, and probably won't cause you to lose saves. The problem is that the game can get very laggy, with extreme drops in FPS, at times making the game unplayable. But I don't believe the problem is as widespread as it may seem.

If you've already put substantial time in on your PS3 copy, then I probably wouldn't bother with a change. But if you're buying new and have the ability to choose your platform, stay away from the PS3 version.

Thanks man! I'll probably just stick with my PS3 copy!

best thing to do is, save often and when it gets really laggy just reload from a save point to refresh the game. it seems to help, it's also what the devs have suggested as a simple fix when things like that happen (as a result of the world constantly moving in a sandbox even when you're not there to hear the tree fall)

ironically, as a high lvl caster I've finally made my way to the college of winterhold...after spending a small fortune on spell books, the game just got even better for this yee ol' lvl 50+ adventurer.
