GS FAQ

How many copies of a game can I trade in?
You are allowed to trade in 4 copies of the same game (same system) within a rolling 30 day period.

What do I need to trade in an older console?
The console, power cable, av cable, and controller. Sometimes they don't care about USB charge cable but ymmv. 3DS XL trade would be console, charger, and stylus. Some have reported being charged a refurb fee for missing the stylus, but again ymmv (answer stolen from anarchyburger)

FAQ will be entered when those questions get asked frequently.

Does the Pro Membership B2G1 coupon apply to only games, or accessories as well?
The coupon applies to both games and accessories, per the wording on the coupon.

I have a $XX.xx pre-owned reward certificate, and I want to use it on a B2G1 transaction. Should I?
It depends. If the three games are equal value, do not use your certificate. The value of the certificate would be applied to the free game, which would not benefit you. If one game is more expensive, you can use the certificate to make it the same value as the other two games ($5 reward certificate applied to transaction with two $10 games and one $15 game would make all three games $10).

TERMINOLOGY AND LINGO:
ASL/SL: Assistant Store Leader, Store Leader; manager positions at GS.
B2G1: Buy two, get one free. Typically refers to the coupon you receive when becoming Pro.
GCU/BB: Gamer’s Club Unlocked, Best Buy
GS: GameStop
JD: Junior detective, an employee who is out to get someone
LP: Loss Prevention; this is the department that actually bans accounts after being flagged.
TC/TiC: Trade credit.
TIV/TV: Trade in value, or what a game currently trades for. When posting a TV for a game, always use the base value.

There is no guarantee you would be making money in stocks and mutual funds. Last year when the pandemic hit you probably would have lost money since alot of those holdings crashed when the lockdowns occured.

Gaming investments are speculative as hell but if you enjoy the hobby and have the space, might as well just hold and see if what you got shoots up in value.
A lot of people made money last year with mutual fund and stocks. Last year was probably the best time to get in. You still have to have basic common sense in investing though to be successful. Basically long term investing and good companies.

this is the right attitude imo
just something fun and not serious

end of the day were all cheapscapes and preffer physical
im not buying no persona games for $400, or anything over $100 bucks bar some rare exceptions. i buy stuff on sale or with some kinda deal
its fun to buy attack on titan final battle for $20 and have it be worth $200-300 lol

I stopped collecting hardcore the past two years to focus more on my career. Flipped most my doubles last year a couple months into the pandemic because the prices were pretty good (not knowing they would go even more up this year), and I bought an insane amount of B2G2 retro at gamestop to resell in Dec 2019 (still have some I gotta get rid of lol). But the most expensive games I own I bought up in 2016-2018 at a steal and they've skyrocketed... $99.99% sure im going to keep them as they're top1-3 most expensive in their respective systems, but I kinda look at them as a free investment sometimes just because by flipping doubles im sure i only have 1-2K of my personal funds invested into my collection... but yea heres a nice juicy list of my top 5 expensive games.

1. Snatcher (sega cd) I purchased from half price books for $250 back when a complete copy was $400-500 so to me it was a great deal. now its $1,362.70

2. Panzer Dragoon Saga (saturn) I got in a lot of 30 games where each game cost me $5 and now its $1,201.00

3. Shantea (gbc) I got off a guy who owned a game store for $50 with a lime green gameboy and a copy of pokemon blue, now  $689.49

4. Stunt Racer N64 I got in a $20 N64 lot that was up for a couple hours on Offerup.. surprised no one messaged the guy. came with manual $674.17

5. Misadventures of Tron Bonne I purchase off a friend with mega man legends 1 and 2 for $200... now $606.88.

Def miss hardcore collecting..  Kinda wish GS still kept retro in store.. I got all my mario party gamecube games cib from in store purchases, got pocky and rocky for snes in store, a sealed!!!! duke nukem for N64 (this was like 2 yrs ago mind you) and im sure I could go on and on..

Are you supposed to get reward points for console purchases? I received points right away for the gift card portion of a PS5 bundle but nothing else.

Gaming, or collecting, is a hobby for most, if it happens to turn into a good investment that’s just a bonus.  Also keep in mind, anyone that has been collecting games since their start has lived through Enron, the dot com bubble, the housing market bubble, the COVID drop, and will soon live through the big data, crypto, nft, and housing market pt 2 bubble collapse as well.  Obviously I don’t know the future predictions will happen, just like you don’t know they won’t, but seeing friends or family lose significant amounts in the stock market can leave a long term negative impression.  Yes, you are probably better off investing than not, but overall it’s still just a big Ponzi scheme designed and controlled by elites that view money as valuations of power more than a source of livelihood.  It’s a game those with connections and insider information will always win while doling out peanuts to those playing along nicely.  I’m no advocate of socialism or communism, but on the opposite end of the spectrum, how would a world where you have to invest to survive work?  The amounts most here have spent on gaming would be pretty insignificant as a market investment, allocating some money towards a hobby and entertainment, especially trying to get the best deals in doing so, is fine.

My kids are already divvying up my collection between themselves, so at the very least I can hope a few items don't end up in an estate sale someday!
lol i keep telling the kids to make sure they look up the prices before their mother sells off everything as a cheap bundle on facebook marketplace

Oh yeah, last year was an amazing time to jump into the stock market. It was like a $5 Circuit City clearance sale on steroids.

Gaming is not really an investment I don't believe, other than sealed games or anything like that where the value is justified. (Which could also be up for debate) but I really enjoy owning a bunch of cool games that I want to enjoy or see myself enjoying later on, while also knowing they aren't just shovelware useless titles that if I ever decided to sell, I'd be able to get my money back or more! It makes it seem like instead of paying $60 for a game and seeing that money is gone, I'm just putting that $60 onto the shelf and maybe in a few years it might be worth more! I would never sell my game collection though, not unless something really bad happened and I really had to.

Gaming can most definitely be an investment if you know what you're doing. I have plenty of games sealed as that's the best games to get a good ROI on. I research what game values and buy extras to hold (when I find a good sale). If those games don't sell, it's ok, I also collect games too so it's a win for me.

But I do sell games among other things (usually older discontinued games and consoles) for a living. It can be very profitable with the right assets and research. I do love and enjoy gaming too though, which is why I'm interested in investing in games. Take two things I love, money and gaming, and turn it into something I can enjoy to do together.

had to laugh at this, I keep telling my wife that my games are worth way more than my truck. last thing I want is to have it dropped off at goodwill when it would pay for a decent chunk of a college education for my kids.

Received this today... GameStop isn't even trying anymore.[attachment=35622:pXL_20210527_163924773.MP.jpg][attachment=35623:pXL_20210527_164334277.MP.jpg]

I take my word back when I said games are a bad investment, well a majority are. But a decent amount of my games has risen up in value since the pandemic, especially the PSP, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo portable games.
Uhhh like every single game that is OOP has risen in value since the pandemic started on the order of 2x-50x (sealed cardboard pokemon games are all worth in the 5 figures now), except for crappy sports titles.

I used to love the multi-cart games when I was a kid growing up. Everytime we went back to Hong Kong it was always great to visit the "pirate" shops where you could get mulit-carts for Gameboy, NES, etc. Eventually when they went to discs you'd get the disc + repro manual + box in a sealed sleeve - but the box wouldn't be assembled to save on shipping on the rickshaw

On topic - GS's most recent copy of XC2 came in and it tasted authentic. Even came with a case! Needed to take a picture to read the serials

Well I believe you have aced your gamestop interview, can you start Monday?
The sad thing is, if they think they can buy anything for $20 and sell it for $70, GameStop probably doesn't care, they'll do it. Sure it will probably be returned a dozen of times, but eventually someone will just be too lazy to return it or some kid will get it as a gift and not think anything of it.

I remember I returned a fake copy of Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon to a local GameStop like a year ago, TOLD THEM it was a fake, and instead of disposing it/sending it back to the warehouse, they had it for sale the next time I was in the store.

I finally got my XBC2 and it's cart only :(
I also got my XC2 a few minutes ago, I was fully expecting Cart only but felt inside the package it was a case and I expected some generic GSTop case but it was CIB and in minty fresh condition but with GSTop stickers on front and back

You win some but you Lose more gambling with GameStop

There are fake switch games? How do I know my XC2 is legit?

The current method (I think) is to just compare the string between to back and front. I haven't ever seen a repro cart so not sure any other way than taste! heh (don't actually lick it)

Lick it apparently. What does tasted authentic mean?
From Nintendo: “To avoid the possibility of accidental ingestion, keep the game card away from young children. A bittering agent (Denatonium Benzoate) has also been applied to the game card. This bittering agent is non-toxic.”

I highly doubt repro carts would take the step to add that agent, though if they have the capability to choose - why not make it taste good... like POON! O:)

Still waiting for my xb2 wishful thinking it arrives complete but given the high number of cart only or generic case games I've gotten for switch from them I don't have hiiiiiigh hopes. Hiiiiiigh hopes high in the sky apple pie hopes.

Also they derped the order page so I can't even get to a tracking and number from the shipped email anymore.

This works on all Nintendo games, but the pokemon fakers have gotten smarter and i've seen fake cartridges where the four digits match on the front and back.

I've never actually seen a fake Switch game before. anyone got any pics of one?

Didn’t even kno they made fakes. Like can you jus pop it into a switch and see

I kno people can fake it by switching the label…but never heard of fake bootleg cartridge for switch

I need to find somewhere other than Ebay to unload my old factory sealed PSP games then.

So lame how its impossible to get free shipping on pre-orders items under $35.

Wouldn't give free shipping on preorders period. Or at least all the games I preordered were well over 35 but still each had 5$ shipping attached. Might be a bug with their system or promos were blocking other promos like free shipping from working/were disabled.

No fake switch carts yet, but I did get a Sonic Mania Plus that did not work at all. Of course when I sent it back for a replacement, they sent a working copy of plain old Sonic Mania. Yeah so just pop your game in for a few seconds, make sure it works, and nobody swapped labels with another game. Extremely unlikely that you would get a bad game come complete though.

I'm sure this is old news, but I just received a "new" copy of Judgment PS5 via an order on their website, and it arrived in a sleeve, not factory sealed.

It's going back to the store and I'm just going to buy it from Best Buy or Amazon.

It's one thing for me to make a conscious choice to buy a gutted copy at their B&M, but to send a "new" copy that's gutted like this?  Ridiculous.

Honestly, whoever at corporate makes these decisions, is an absolute moron (no surprise). I 100% understand that you can't put new games out for display because there is high risk that they get stolen, but there are definitely alternatives. Honestly just having display labels, whether it's directly from the manufacturer, or printed at DCs and sent out, or printed in store, is a cheap solution. Hell you don't even have to put them into game cases if you don't want, just print it on stock paper/stick it on cardboard and the customer brings the piece of cardboard to the counter when they want to buy a new game. The time it would take printing/replacing labels would be the same time it takes to gut a copy, and then reassemble it when a customer wants it. So the only cost is ink and paper, which is a few cents per new game? And it totally behooves them to pay that small costs, because it helps their reputation and would increase their sales. Let's be honest, if anyone here had to buy a new game from gamestop or Amazon, Best Buy, etc. for the same exact price, who on earth is taking the risk and going with Gamestop and HOPING they get a sealed game, and in some cases, even a complete game.

Yours was disc only too? It happened to me the other day. I bought Call of Cthulu for XB1 and it literally came in a sleeve with a printed label that said "NEW". I did a return immediately, it was ridiculous.

I bought Rune Factory 4 Special "New", but it was clearly open and had been used. It was however in excellent condition so I kept it. It is ridiculous though that they sell items as NEW that clearly are not.

Unfortunately thats been a known problem for a long time (selling used games as new). Now they are sending "NEW" games disc only! Ive lived with them sending me a used game as new if its complete and great shape but im not accepting a disc only "New" game.
