The Howard Stern Thread
How relevant can he be if even his fans are jumping ship? He doesnt make the news, His Letterman appearances dont spike their ratings, and he hasnt really done much for AGTs viewership.

You can say he was still relevant 5 years ago if you want but even way its been on a decline for awhile.
Are you from the future? That stuff hasn't aired yet.

Also, he was on the cover of RS like six months ago. He may not be what he once was, but I don't think he wants to be. Being on top means you have to put in a ton of work, and at this point in his life it is obvious he doesn't want to commit that much of his life to it.

I honestly thought it was airing. More evidence of him being irrelevant.

His fans are jumping ship then many are downloading the show illegally. Sirius also hasn't lost many subscribers.

His interviews still make the news all the time, he plays the clips on the show when the show is mentioned.

The Letterman comment is a flat out lie. The only time Letterman beats Leno is when Howard is on.

As for AGT, not one episode has aired with Howard on the show yet.

Is he as popular as when Private Parts came out? No. He's still the biggest name in radio and will go down as the biggest ever.

If he were irrelevant, AGT wouldn't have come calling, Sirius wouldn't have paid him $500 million with $246 million in stock bonus nor would they have re-upped his contract.

A lie? Here are the ratings from the last time he was on

Leno 3.0/8
Nightline 2.9/7
Letterman 2.7/7
Kimmel 1.4/4

This is why you dont hear him crowing over his Letterman ratings anymore.

How bout the time before that? Also, what was the Leno letterman rating the night before? I understand Leno doubles him most nights.

That's my point all along.

Ha nice avatar. Is that one of the infamous symbols I hear so much about? BTW - Reilly's book is free as part of the Kindle lending library on Amazon.

This past week Leno had 3.7 million viewers and Letterman had 3.3 million. So its always somewhat close. I dont know how often you listen to the show but when was the last time Howard talked about his Letterman ratings? That tells you all you need to know.

I listen to every show, and Vinny usually calls in gloating about the ratings after every appearance. And he's a Letterman exec.

I've listened to every second of every show since around 1998. The show is not good these days. Howard completely ignores the wack pack. You don't get any Gilbert on the news anymore, I could go on and on.

The problem is simple, he's not into anymore. I don't know if it's the lawsuit with Sirius or he just doesn't have anything else to prove. He does the absolute minimum amount of time per show.

I'll always remember the great shows he put on in the past but these shows just hurt his legacy.

Behind the Scenes episode 14 is one of the greatest things of all time. Its just footage of Medicated Pete at the Erotic Expo and its amazing. That kid is the funniest, most fascinating person in the world. If you don't laugh out loud at least once during the episode you might not be human. The last 30 seconds is just a single shot of Pete staring at the camera and even that is somehow hysterical.

I went to one of the AGT tapings in St. Louis. I would never have known about the show if it wasn't for Howard, but I can tell you that the entire theater went nuts when they announced him and I really think he is going to be a huge hit on that show.

I wish I could get HowardTV. they need to expand into more than just cable companies.

edit: Maklershed - I like your avatar - looks like that actor Clive Warren.

Indeed. And allow me to compliment your xbl tag in return as Trailer Park Boys is one of the best shows ever.

Uhh Holice, I can't talk right now I'm working on a book.

I decided to bump this thread because Ronnie talking about washing his ass out in the sink was one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. Bobo's prank was great, but Ronnie acting like everyone washes their ass out in the sink was flat out fucking hilarious.
Anyone want to speculate on Robin's illness? Still doing the show from home this long, absent Friday??
I'm worried.... Really hope she's ok.
I'm worried.... Really hope she's ok.
She must have cancer considering she had a huge mass removed. Just shocked it never got out to the media.

I'm assuming its something that causes her to be plugged in to something but she can get away from it for brief stints .. hence why she goes to movies, parties, dinners, etc

Dialysis or chemo treatments I would wildly guess. I wonder why they haven't said anything or how the press hasn't found out

She's now been out of the studio for seven months. Her last time in the studio was May. Also, she recently just sold one of her mansions at a loss of approximately $1 million in exchange that the purchaser assumes the legal commitments. So it does seem like maybe she has something major going on.

For how long Robin's been tele-working it has to be something pretty serious. The only mention of anyone on the show of busting her balls about not being in was Richard during the flooding and he got slammed hard and no one backed him up so I think everyone on the show knows what's up and it's serious enough to not make fun or really even mention it.

It is odd that they wouldn't just come out and say whats up though. The show is about truth and the lives of everyone on the show. I guess they got their reasons but still al ittle odd to me

Seems odd that someone who has been pushing all the health initiatives that she's been part of ending up with a very serious medical condition like cancer.

I didn't realize she was still working from her home via ISDN lines, though it must be very very serious for her to still be out of the studio.
Those sketches JB Smoove wrote really should have made it to air on SNL. They would have been hilarious.
His real name isn't JB Smoove, right??

anyone here who's listened to the show since before he went to Sirius and can say whether the show has gotten worse or not?

I listened to the show quite a bit during 2012 and a little this year but beyond seeing a few clips of the show on Youtube and a few shows from E!, I haven't listened to it much.

with that being said, I feel like the show has taken a turn for the worse. after Jokeman and Artie were gone, they really have not come up with a comedian to fill the gap between Howard and Robin. most of the time I tuned it, Howard talked about AGT or whatever TV show he was watching, and I just lost interest. some of the recent shows I liked were when they had Tan Mom come on the show, and the Westboro Baptist chick.

Howard will always be hilarious but I just don't think the show's as funny as it used to be, and there's not as much filth as there once was. I like hearing about naked women and debauchery. maybe it's just that Howard is getting old, but it seems like there's not as much of that anymore.

It's not better or worse. Just always changing.

It's as good as ever cause it's still hilarious. There's just different "ages" if the show.

I never had access to him before Sirius so I cant vouch for that era. When they do the best of or mastertape theatre, there are some gems that made me laugh but IMO the laughs were fewer and further apart than the Sirius era.

Then again I stopped listening after Artie left.

Yeah I've been listening since 94. It was just different then cause of you didn't listen live, you didn't hear it. It actually amazes me how many things they play on stern show shuffle from before Sirius that I know I heard live.

Although, I did pretty much get up at 7 everyday and immediately turn my radio on while in bed so I did make a solid effort to hear it all. I even bought a shower radio when I lived in my apartment.

My first exposure to the show was in the early 90s when Stern debuted in the Los Angeles market. At the time I was in 6th grade and my dad listened to the show when he took us to school or if I was working with him. What I remember is tons of fucking bass, Jackie's laugh, and them talking about things I knew nothing about. At the time, it was Howard Stern in the morning and classic rock all day. I didn't really get the show and wasn't interested at all.

It wasn't until that particular station, KLSX 97.1, flipped formats to FM talk (and actually put on good talent, which took some time) that I became interested in talk radio in general. It was probably a combination of the format change and me growing up. When I was in high school I liked a show called Conway and Steckler. They were funny guys and I could actually listen to it since it was on at 7PM. It wasn't until after high school that I started listening to Stern in 2002.

By 2004 he made his announcement that he was going to Sirius and by then I was definitely invested in it and listening to every second of every show. I felt that the Sirius shows during the first contract were the best I've ever heard, and that's based on everything I know now. I've gone back and listened to the "golden age" and although there's some hilarious stuff with Jackie and Gilbert and all that, I think the Artie years on Sirius were even better.

I started listening less and less throughout 2012. I would let myself lapse in shows but I would always catch up. At some point I let my Sirius subscription lapse but I obviously did not feel bad pirating the show (which I was doing anyway even when I was paying for Sirius). The absence of Artie left a huge hole that they never managed to fill, and this allowed the worst of Howard and Robin's personalities to shine through. Artie gave it that everyman feel even as Howard and Robin dove deeper into insanity. He seemed to turn the show into things he used to shit on other personalities for, like having his wife on for what basically amount to infomercials for her projects and charities.

By the middle of 2013 I was not listening at all except to hear key interviews or developments on YouTube. I also caught up on Robin's cancer diagnosis. But other than that, the changes in the show and the three-day weeks left me disinterested, and now I listen to, dare I say it, Opie and Anthony.

I'm not listening to every second of every O&A show like I did with Stern, but I do download each show and listen to the first hour at the very least. I also love the VideOandA channel on YouTube. I would subscribe to them but they keep saying the Sirius app does not work so I don't.

I started listening to Stern in early 1983.  The buses back then only had AM radio so they had limited choices.  Have been hooked ever since.  That was 30 years ago.  Crazy to have been listening to the same guy for 30 years.
