The HP Touchpad Guide Thread (get help with webOS, preware, video converters, etc)

Installed preware last night and pushed it up to 1.5. It's quite nice. Also got my leather case in from Amazon when it was $12. Well worth it since I can put it on the night stand and watch streaming stuff. Also bought my first app, Video Flood HD. Nice streaming ap and well worth the 3 dollar charge.
So...free apps?
Giantbomb and Gamefly apps - provide quick access to game news, though the GB app isn't optimized for the Touchpad (videos seems to be borked as well)

DeckofcARds - substitute for the AR cards that came with the 3ds. Only used the coinbox card so far and itvworked fine

Accuweather - weather app, nuff said

Wooter - quick access to Woot deals. Also not optimized for Touchpad

Nuclear Attack - pretty good missile command knockoff game

Robotek HD - simple yet addictive

Breakfast Club soundboard - because Barry Manilow wants his wardrobe back

webOS Roundup - webos info center
is the app store down for everyone or just me?

is the app store down for everyone or just me?
I keep getting a message telling me to "Try again later." :(

Yeah, SD posted a thread for some more free app codes and the app store has been crashing for a while now since then.

yah, added it death. Quite nice really but I'm still running at 1.2. I liked the 1.5 but I don't feel like ever owning a brick cause of it
It's still a pre-alpha build, just give it time. In the meantime you can run games like machinarium and the SCUMMVM games on the touchpad :)
Wait wha? Does SCUMMVM have something to do with Maniac Mansion? Sorry I'm completely ignorant of this crap but I googled real quick and saw something about Maniac Mansion. Do you have a link on how to get this stuff working on the TP?

Here's a link on how to get Machinarium (another awesome game) running.

Thanks for the post this'll give me something to mess around with.

Edit: Oh shit I dont know what Im doing but it looks like a bunch of good games can be played on the TP. Maniac Mansion, Day of The tentacle, Full throttle, Monkey Island...awesome. I found a link here for SCUMMVM v1.3.1 is that the latest version?

Yeah, SCUMM is the engine for many of the fondly remembered adventure games of old. This is the developer forum for the WebOS port (touchpad). As far as I know the port still needs some refining, particularly on the controls, but the games are playable. On that forum you should be bale to find the ipks to install for the latest version of the engine
Damn, I completely missed this: HP Touchpad on Facebook gave away 4 free apps last night. I've bookmarked it now.
They also sent promo codes for these four apps in the HP newsletter last night (I think I signed up for it when I registered my TP). Worth signing up for if they keep doing it - and easier than checking in on their FB page.

Yeah, they sent me a newsletter with the codes this morning when they were already expired.

I signed up for the newsletter once I registered my TP and nothing. A lot of people on the pre boards have yet to get any emails either for promo codes with some of them being long term members. Also, I think I saw that you can't use the wireless either on the android port. It's mostly for devs to mess around with at the moment. I just wish for a good gmail ap. Not to fond of the email app on here.

Don't feel bad about receiving the E-mail this late or not at all. I received mine the night the codes went live around 6pm, tried redeeming them around 11pm and the App Catalog was all but broken. Tried again around 3am that night and the codes were all used/gone.

The least they could have done was sent unique sets of codes to those who are on their E-mail list, sheesh.

Patched Hulu back to working. It's ok, but it was running quite choppy the night I tested it. Amazon Video On Demand, on the other hand, works amazingly well. Just as smooth and clear as watching on my PC, and I've got a cheap ($30/mo) 1.5mbps connection.
Does anyone one have any tips for hbo go? I cant ever get past the optimizing videos part.
My sister logged on to HBO Go to watch True Blood on the Touchpad a couple of weeks ago and it worked fine. The only thing I did for her Touchpad was install preware, and some of those patches that slightly improve performance (Muffle System Logging, etc).

I'll ask her tomorrow to see if she ran into any issues and post back.

I finally got my StealthArmor order in, and spent the last hour or so carefully applying it.

Overall, I'm not impressed. For one thing, the cuts seem off, at least on mine. The screen protector can either be lined up to fit the main button or the camera, but not both. One will be off-center from its cut opening by enough to be both noticeable and annoying. The back is also cut a little too short, and it doesn't cover as much of the bottom edge and corners as the top does, despite being lined up perfectly with the HP logo opening.

The other thing is that, well, to be honest, the screen protector so far is pretty bad. The applying process is horrid, and nerve-wracking, as you have to spray water of some kind onto the film before applying it. Bubbles and liquid are still coming out from the screen, and it looks bad. There's residue or something under it that makes it looks bad when the unit's off. When the screen's on, there's a fine rainbow-tint at a pixel level to the screen from the protector.

I wouldn't recommend them. I'll give the screen protector a day to see if it works itself out (as they are sometimes liable to do), but I may just pull it off and go naked.

Hey guys besides the official bluetooth keyboard, does it matter what keyboard I use for this? Been looking at a billion bt on ebay didnt know if any would or would not work.

Thanks, I didn't know that. But judging by what Kerig said, it wouldn't really help.
StealthArmor review
Thanks Joe, I was deciding to place a couple of orders for StealthArmor this week but I'm glad I read your short review before I did. I'll continue using my TP without protection.

Btw, I saw on Slickdeals that Glimpse will be on sale tomorrow ($1) for a whopping 80% discount from its original price.

thanks for your review. I really wanted the stealth armor dark wood skin, but instead picked up the verizon tablet sleeve (awesome) for $5 shipped and a $.01 casecrown carbon weave stand/case (awesome) from amazon.
Happy I made the right decision.

I'm really surprised they didn't send unique codes given the cluster/mad-dash that happens each time they post codes on their blog. That's too bad - I was hoping the newsletters would give people a better chance at redeeming.

bought my first paid app today after missing glimpse for free. 99cents today only for what seems like the highest rated and very unique app in the catalog.

also I wanted to give a nod to BrainPOP. It's a free app supposedly for elementary kids that shows a short 2-5 minute flash cartoon learning lesson on all sorts of interesting subjects. Internet searching, comparing prices, information sharing, causes of the American Revolution, etc. It also has a 10 question quiz at the end of each episode. It feels like a 5th grade class that teaches things you'd actually care to learn. Today's movie/subject is conditioning (as in Pavlov), crazy!

did I mention the co-host is a robot?

If you bought Glimpse for 99 cents make sure you didnt actually get charged $5 on your CC. My receipt and everything showed a dollar but I was actually charged full price.

I messed around with the browser cache file. Loving it now since I don't have to keep refreshing cag for new posts or topics like I had to. Also fixed my keyboard size. As of now, Hulu no longer works with the preware patch. Anybody else have trouble with the nbc site as well?

Does it work without it?

Keyboard does but that's it. Bring up the keyboard and hold the button that brings the keyboard up and down.

It really depends upon what you will be using it for. If it's mainly going to be a mobile web and email box with some games and eBooks, the 16GB would be fine. However if you plan on doing a lot of video and music in addition to the previous list, the 32GB would be a better option.

Cool, thanks. I don't even know if that's the amount of RAM or storage (flash memory?) LOL. Guess I have some reading to do.

Windows 8 ARM edition takes ~9+ gigs to install (WTF WHY!!!), so if you plan on triple booting Android + WebOS + Win8, might want to consider a 32 gig.
Finally got my protective screen today. Anti glare on it kinda sucks though.
Yeah. Got my 5-pack, for $12 or whatever, from China. Nice quality, as usual, but they sent regular ones! Ugh! Currently in the process of getting the correct set or some money back.

Here's some, if anyone wants to try them. Email first and make sure their Anti Glare/Matte is NOT shiny!!! Ugh!

Also, Asphalt 6 is, currently, free for Apple devices. Well, atleast I got if for free on my iPod touch. Not just the demo. Worth looking into for those with iPod touch, iPhone, iPad.

Hmmm... I can no longer log in from my touchpad and I have to, constantly, clear the cache to view new updates on here! Help!
I'll be able to buy a Touchpad in a couple of weeks, do you guys recommend the 16GB version for $99.99 or 32GB for $149.99?
Also, remember, you will be getting 50GB of online storage through the Box app in the Hp app store.

Free Apps, get them while you can.

3 hours and the codes are dead. :oldman:

I propose HP do one of two things before we all start getting mad. Unique codes or choose one of the four offered. Limit one code redeemed per touchpad, similar to the Sony free game promotion.
