The HP Touchpad Guide Thread (get help with webOS, preware, video converters, etc)

What is the risk of installing preware or overclocking (not even sure if these are the same thing), especially for a non technical person? Warrenty voided?

I'm not too technical either but I believe that although it's always possible to brick the system it's highly unlikely and you really shouldnt worry about that. Just pay attention and do it properly. Yes it does void the warranty as far as I know. "Overclocking" to 1.5GHz is safe but I wouldnt go any higher. The battery will drain a little sooner though because of it.

It's all worth it imo if you're not happy with the speed/responsiveness out of the box.

Edit: Installing preware and overclocking the system are two different things. Preware is basically like a second app catalog for homebrew (meaning made at home by people/unofficial) apps.

Overclocking is basically speeding up the computer. It normally is set at 1.2 GHz but you can "overclock" it to 1.5GHz to generally speed things up. In order to do that on the Touchpad, you first have to install a preware application that will allow you to change those computer settings. That Preware app is call 'Govnah'. So obviously you will be installing Preware first, and then overclocking if you choose to do so.

Honestly I would install preware first and muffle logging and see how you like the speed then, it makes a big difference. I havent overclocked yet because its running fine for what I need, but I know its always an option, and if you mess up thats what webdoctor is for.

http://forums.precentral.net/hp-touchpad/293028-new-touchpad-heres-your-get-started-guide.html

remove tap ripple
faster card animations hyper version
increase touch sensitivity
muffle system logging
quiet powered messages
remove dropped packet logging
unthrottle download manager

Those are the reccommended ones in the thread I installed, along with Govnah / uber kernal to overclock to 1.5. comparing it to my cousin's touchpad it ran about 2-3x faster during general use / opening programs

Thanks for your help and clarification. The only reason I was considering doing it was to use hbogo which keeps getting locked up. In viewing several different forums its a mixed bag whether people are having this issue or not. Also there is speculation as to whether Comcast (my cable provider) has blocked the use of hbogo on the touchpad. Do you think installing the preware would help?

theres a hulu fix in the preware store which cleaned up some of the flash issued i was having as well. even if it doesn't work for HBO go it'll still get you hulu access, so its worth a shot

if ur provider is Comcast, then u should just use xfinity tv to watch everything. it links with your comcast account and allows you to watch major channels your cable package includes -so if you have hbo then u can watch all the hbo content on xfinity tv-.

So since there's no app for xfinity, you can just log in the website and set it up to watch on the TP?

Lol

Huh? My other eBooks came down without a hitch, so I'm not sure what the hiccup was.

re-sync the TP a couple times through the kindle app, if that don't work go to the amazon website and click to send it to your TP again

I had that problem the other night and can't remember how I fixed it, but it was by syncing or sending it back to the TP again...

Thank you strigol will try that

Do anyone of you own Nook colors, are they rooted? How do they compare to the HP Touchpad, outside of the obvious things such as the Android marketplace have more apps etc.

I modded my nook with android honeycomb, class 6 Micro SD card. Ran to slow for me. Once I got my touchpad I sold the nook off the next day.

NP.
We can't let SD rape and pillage everything. ;)
This is the first HP TP newsletter I've received, so I'm guessing there will be some who don't get this one. Thought I'd share the wealth, so to speak.
Totemo, WX Dashboard and Writepad aren't bad apps.
Really plan on doing this.....but i think I would miss robotek.
There is already methods out there so you can dual boot between WebOS and Android.

is the the wire for the touchstone detachable do that I can just take it around to other rooms and just use it as a stand temporarily?

No, you can tie the cord up with a twist tie in a pinch. There are also excellent stands for it for around 10 dollars.

Has anyone tried splashtop yet? Right now it is $9.99 in the HP app catalog. It looks pretty cool. It streams netflix hulu and more. It seems like overall great remote access to your pc.

Let me know.

I kind of want that Splashtop app, but I'm not sure if I'd ever actually use it. If the TouchPad had 3G, I'd probably bite on it. Without it, I can't think of how/when I would use it.

a useful app for once with splashtop.
but can justify buying anything or giving them my cc when cm's andriod port seems so close now.

I hear you. I just don't know if I would get enough use out of it. After all I am Cheap.
I missed out on this deal but I do have Splashtop on my Asus Transformer and it works beautifully.
arhgg I bought it but can only connect through google internet i can't setup the network. As of right now I am disappointed as it is slow as dogsh@# this way. I can't find any step by step insructions on how to set it up.

The only step by step is a 3 step process and it does not work.

Did you install Splashtop Remote Streamer on your laptop or computer? You have to do that first so you can make a security password to access your desktop through your TP using the app.

LOL...I did. I got it working. Not quite sure how but I did. It is like sitting at my desktop (no lag etc) on my touchpad at the couch. Now I just have to find some fun stuff to do. I have xvids I can watch and can access sites that I couldn't on the touchpad using the remote desktop.
Now I have this I might actually have to get the keyboard. I am still having a small problem though when I disconnect I can't reconnect to splashtop sometimes.
I definitely think it's worth it to have keyboard because it's useful for many things you will use the tp for without taking away from the touch advantage, JMO. I had that same issue earlier and just had to reset my router to fix the wifi connection.

thanks for all the advice.. I am sure I will get it all going.
^ No prob.

Yeah, and there's also a clear TP case at Amazon for $8.95 + FS that will be released October 6th. But since I already have a leather case I'm not sure if I'll get that one or if it's even worth it.
That case looks pretty cool. thanks for the heads up.

I just figured out I could use my kindle app on my desktop via splashtop vs the beta one on the touchpad. The only hard thing is that it is hard to figure out the motions I have to use on the TP to get it and everything else to work right. ( oh yes and nook too but since kindle now has library books I will probably stick with that app).

Just having fun playing around with splashtop and everything else on the TP :)

^ Yeah I looked at the photos and that was definitely a drawback. Too bad there wasn't a case made to cover the entire tp, but I'm glad I got the skinomi screen protecter for mine.

That's cool, I've always wanted to try kindle (especially after hearing you could watch pilot's before they air). I played a few videos from my desktop using WMP and they looked great and it definitely saves you the hassle of having to convert videos just to watch on the tp when they're right on your laptop. I also found that I could use my wireless mouse that's connected to my laptop to scroll and click easier while looking at it form my tp (but I doubt I'll do that all the time though lol), and I can still use the tp keyboard too.

Same here. :)

smart thinking with the wireless mouse...:)

I agree with the hassle of having to convert videos all though I still will for a few for when I am on the road and have some time to kill to watch a home video or movie.

The clear case not having a cover is a drawback.

Thanks. :) I just figured since I can see everything I do directly from my laptop too then I should be able to use the mouse.

Yeah, I still probably will too lol.
