I'm not too technical either but I believe that although it's always possible to brick the system it's highly unlikely and you really shouldnt worry about that. Just pay attention and do it properly. Yes it does void the warranty as far as I know. "Overclocking" to 1.5GHz is safe but I wouldnt go any higher. The battery will drain a little sooner though because of it.
It's all worth it imo if you're not happy with the speed/responsiveness out of the box.
Edit: Installing preware and overclocking the system are two different things. Preware is basically like a second app catalog for homebrew (meaning made at home by people/unofficial) apps.
Overclocking is basically speeding up the computer. It normally is set at 1.2 GHz but you can "overclock" it to 1.5GHz to generally speed things up. In order to do that on the Touchpad, you first have to install a preware application that will allow you to change those computer settings. That Preware app is call 'Govnah'. So obviously you will be installing Preware first, and then overclocking if you choose to do so.
Honestly I would install preware first and muffle logging and see how you like the speed then, it makes a big difference. I havent overclocked yet because its running fine for what I need, but I know its always an option, and if you mess up thats what webdoctor is for.
