The "Messiah CompleX PWNS Countdown and WWH" Comic Discussion Thread

House of M started the problems with marvel for me. Pure shit story telling and structure. Civil war was also kinda crappy, save a few specific ideas and themes.
Now here's' the BIG problem with disliking those two series: Every marvel story is now centered around it. Being a DC fan, that really shouldnt be a complaint, but there are storylines like World War Hulk that are pretty damn good and are unfortunately still tied to two huge pieces of crap.

...That reminded me I need to catch up with WWH. Havent read past the 3rd issue (maybe 4th, Ive really lost track)

I totally agree with you, WWH is the best of the serie, but where the hell is the last issue?

I love listening to comics creators complain about not being taken seriously as an industry when the industry acts like 2nd semester HS senior who is going to graduate anyways but doesnt give a shit about his current grades.
Act professional and they will respect you. Yes, you can have a fun time too, but for fucks sake, get everything out on time.

I had heard rumors earlier this year about them killing Bruce at the beginning of Final Crisis. I really hope it's not true. It has the potential to be a great story, but I'm not sure I'm willing to let Bruce go, since he IS such an awesome character.

As far as trades and Graphic Novels...no one beats www.instocktrades.com No one! Storage supplies I usually get at my local comic shop.

Now killing batman off is just a rumor. Keep in mind that Rich at Lying in the Gutters also stated that Origins was about Uncle Ben molesting a young Peter Parker, One Year Later Bruce Wayne would be in Arkham Assylum, and that Nightwing was to die during Infinite Crisis. You never really know with rumors and that's really all they are. Although some rumors have proven to be true.

But hasn't DiDio stated he WAS gonna kill Nightwing during Infinite Crisis but he changed his mind last minute and instead Conner died? But yeah, the only reason I'm willing to put any thought into this rumor is that I HAVE been hearing this rumor for almost half a year now, that Bruce would die and be the catalyst that helped set off Final Crisis.
 
its hard to admit it but i agree. marvel just doesnt move me like it has in the past. civil war got me hyped but let me down. CW villianized my fav hero (ironman) and killed my other fav(i still love caps book very much even though hes gone but like i've said, i trust Ed Bru'). planet hulk was stellar but WWH is not what i was hoping it would be. i have been a marvel man my whole life. for as long as i can remember i never read anything DC. even though my all time fav story in all of comicdom is KINGDOM COME, i never got into DC.

until this year i had no idea what i was missing. i kept hearing about this infinite crisis thing and decided to check it out. im beyond hooked. GEOFF JOHNS!!! GEOFF JOHNS!!! GL, ACTION COMICS, JL-muthalovin-A. Booster goof is now BOOSTER GOLD.

i read that geoff johns did a run on AVENGERS? anyone know what run was his?

I forgot to put JSA on my pull list. To say the least, I wasnt too happy the other day when I went to pick up my comics and it was MIA. Hopefully my old store will have it when I visit Sunday.

On a side note, Ive been just looking through all the GL books (no $... dammit) and HOLY fuck the story seems bigger than most events that happen. Final Crisis has to live up to this run now...and I cant wait to see the teaser for the 3rd part of the GL Johns arc.
 
Yeah. I've.. uh.. loaded, downwards, Sinestro Corps. I'll probably wait for a trade as I was late to the game. So awesome, though.

Edit: I have actually bought all the one-shot character issues, though.
 
Would it be at all possible to ask for some recommendations for me? I'm not getting much help from the local comic guy.

First of all, I'm not big on the mask and tights kind of superheroes, I'm actually looking for stuff that's either realistic, supernatural, or just told in a unique way. I was given a few comics by my girlfriend, which were the Watchmen, Y the Last Man, and the first few Buffy comics (was a big Buffy fan). I also happen to have the Serenity comic as well. I also like that graphic novel style from 300 and Sin City and such, dark and gritty is my kind of style. Also, my favorite hero of all time is Spawn, ever since I read/saw/heard his story I loved it and am wanting to catch up on it.

I also just grabbed the Heroes book thing, looking to get the Dark Tower, the rest of the Buffy comics, and to maybe look into the Darkness, Punisher, Phonogram, Fables, the Umbrella Academy, and possibly Wanted.

So with all that said, could someone direct me in the way of some other things in these veins that I might enjoy as well? Many thanks.
 
Reaper, I cannot recommend Fables enough. It might take buying some trades to catch up but so worth the effort. Hack/Slash isn't half bad. It does get to be a little hit or miss but really worth a read. Also, even if you're not a mask and tights person, I would also recomend Manhunter just because it is just so well written I have my friends who read fraking Archie reading it.
 
Fables: Highly suggested...but the first part of the second trade sucks. Fight through it and it starts to get amazing after.

I also just picked up the last 2 JSA issues from my old store... Geoff Johns is a god
 
Can I just say how much I loved the reveal in Illuminati 5? It makes perfect sense
for Blackbolt to be a Skrull. He'd never have to talk at Illuminati meetings yet could still affect the bigger things in the Marvel universe. And the art on the splash page where they showed him all Skrully was great. So was him just all of a sudden talking.
It definitely got me even more hyped up for Secret Invasion than when we first saw Skrullectra. The only thing I'm not sure about SI is that Yu is doing the artwork. I just hope there's not a lot of people standing around talking in SI.

I saw Fables after I posted but before I saw your post, but Hack/Slash definitely looks interesting so definite thanks for that one. Jeez, I'm gonna be a comic geek before long if I keep finding interesting series. ;)

Yep, only issue I bothered to buy or even read at all, period. Guess that's all I needed.

Yu has a ton of potential, too.. I don't like his avengers sketchy crap so much, but I'm not sure if that's his or the inker's fault. Check out Superman Birthright if you haven't. His art in that blew my mind.

If you're talking about the mini-series, I'd suggest reading the rest sometime. It was a pretty good read. It was interesting seeing how they sort of retconned the Illuminati actually very well into Marvel's history. Plus Cheung's art was amazing.

This is very true. I forgot he did Birthright. Though I was looking at his Deviant Art site and it has him trying out drawing Skrulls and it's not looking the best. Granted, they were quick sketches, but it did have me a bit worried. Hopefully it'll look more like Birthright. I just would have rather seen someone like Cassiday on SI. His sci-fi stuff in Astonishing right now is absolutely amazing, and his normal art is great too. I'd have loved to see him front and center in a big event.
 
Okay...I have to mention this. I just got around to reading comics from last week. Astonishing X-Men 23..........That may have been THE best X-Men issue I've read. There was one moment, near the very end, where I literally stood up from my couch and yelled "YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" in the middle of my apartment. I'm sure my neighbors think I'm crazy, but that was just such a great scene. The smirk on the character's face right before the thing happened, was perfect. I'm so gonna miss Whedon and Cassiday when they're done. I could care less about the scheduling issues when Whedon writes such a fantastic book and Cassiday produces some of the most amazing art I've seen.

Nice review! I love this whole run in general because I'm feeling very vindicated right now in being a Cyclops fan. He's pretty much always been my favorite X-Men character, ever since I was a little kid. So to see him finally blossom under an amazing writer is great. I think one of my favorite moments in comics was towards the end of Torn when he just showed up powerless with a gun and shot the fake-Hellfire Club up. Whedon just so perfectly can write all these characters. It makes me kinda worried to see what Ellis does with these characters. Ellis is a great writer, but I'm not sure he can live up to the amazing run Whedon has had. And Bianchi is nowhere near the caliber of Cassiday in my books. But it should be interesting.
 
supposedly cyke is gonna be getting more spotlight during and after messiah complex.. and if he's written the same way he's been written in axm, then good shit for all.

it's like.. the last big thing that happened to him was that he started boning emma.. or that whole apocalypse fiasco.

and someone needs to fix or kill gambit..

though i havent read any of the current newsstand stuff, its a book i like to read in TPB.

what i have read is great. be warned; it is VERY political.

"the first hundred days", "tag", "march to war"... there's another i cant remember but its very, very well written and the art is superb. there is a little costumed hero action but only for like one page at a time and its told in flash backs.

Messiah CompleX just keeps blowing me away each issue. Like I read somewhere, if it wasn't for the change in artists, I honestly feel like I wouldn't know this is different writers. They're all so in-tune with one another it's great. Though I have to say, about the latest chapter in Adjectiveless,
I feel like Wolverine killed Gambit there :lol:. That second stab, where it went through Gambit's chest, looked brutal. Though I did love seeing when Sinister and the Marauders turned it all against the X-Men. And I can't wait to see what happened with the Sentinel.
This really is one of the most exciting events I've seen in comics recently.
 
So the debate here is. What does everyone here think of the ending of Sinestro Corp, Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul, and One More Day. Anyone else check out the One More Day finale?

Words cannot describe. In a way, I have rarely ever gotten an emotional response like this from a comic. I don't know whether this is good or bad and whether the new status quo of Spidey will only exist until the sales drop. Without saying too much, I disagree with everything done in the storyline outside of one interesting development that I didn't see coming. OMD was not neccessary to make this development happen, and after Marvel returns to the status quo of the character, I would like to see this development stick around. This character had a great storyline, and while I don't like the retcon, his character was needed and one of the big holes in Spidey's life for years.
 
On a whole I didn't like OMD at all. It seemed like editorially pushed bull shit of "Let's make
Peter Parker single again, cause that's how we get the best sales!"
And it just didn't gel at all. I do agree with you that the one good thing coming out of it was the return of a certain character. That I did enjoy. But on a whole, it sucked. Let's hope BND is better.

I feel like I should have seen the big revelation at the end of this week's Messiah Complex chapter, given they SHOWED Madrox's new mark on the cover.
Yet somehow I didn't even fathom that Bishop could be the traitor. I was just like "Oh, Madrox somehow ended up in Bishop's universe. Interesting."
This story just keeps rolling along and getting better and better.
 
One More Day, Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul, Messiah Complex, Sinestro Corps Wars... THESE are what crossovers should be. Epic, sweeping, INTERESTING They are definetly some of the best stories the respective titles have seen in YEARS.

I'll definitely agree to MC and SCW being some of the best stories in awhile, but my main problem with Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul was that it seemed like every chapter went like this:

People talk for two or three pages. Eighteen pages are taken up by a fight sequence where there is barely, if any, character development. Final page has shock ending to said action sequence with perhaps a bit of character development.

I don't like every chapter to be some huge action sequence. I mean, I liked the cross-over, but I wouldn't put it in the same league as Sinestro or Messiah Complex. The only character I came out of that caring more about then when I went in was Talia, cause she finally seemed to rise above the whole "Look at me, I run the League of Assassins" attitude she's had. Plus, I thought the art in the Detective Comics parts was HORRIBLE. As for OMD, I just don't agree with what they did. I will admit that JMS wrote it as best he could, but you gotta love when even HE didn't agree with what was happening and wanted his name removed from the credits for that story.
 
I think One More Day was pretty boring as a whole, but the effects of all of it and who they brought back is crazy as hell to me. It could spin into some really good stuff, but with Marvel lately..
 
i stopped reading OMD after the first issue..I felt like it was a super hero version of dawson's creek with the whole break up thing..of course im basing it on 1 issue but it just didnt interest me to keep reading it.
 
When we interviewed Joe Quesada a couple of months ago, he explained why Spider-man worked better as a single man. Granted, we only had 20 minutes to talk, because of his schedule so we couldn't get in what we thought. But damn, this issue of Amazing Spider-man is hands down the single worst issue of Spiderman I have read in years. Something is wrong with your definition of a hero, when spiderman makes a deal with the devil.....fuck me running! Can't wait for a second interview with Quesada.

Bishop being the traitor has made complete sense since his first appearance. Byrne (UXM) and Claremont (XMEN). I always figured this would come into play since I read X Men #8 or 9 when Bishop goes after Gambit (when I waas like 10 or 11 years old). Bishop has been written like the traitor to, since X-treme X Men when his police and "order" morals were clearly defined. Messiah Complex continues to impress and it is hard to believe that marvel can put out complete trash like OMD and comic gold in Messiah complex in the same month.
 
Wait wait....Bishop being a traitor? I don't know if that works or not. He was never as aggressive as Cable was. Shooting Forge doesn't make any sense. When the two characters first met he called Forge Genesis and knows of his importance in the future. Shooting a defensless baby is out of character for Bishop. I am loving Messiah Complex, even though we have seen these stories before, it's still pumped with enough of a fresh take that it keeps me wanting for more. I just wish they would concentrate in telling good stories like this and stop making new spin off series like X-force, Cable, and Young X-men.
 
I think what's gonna end up happening with Bishop is that it has to do with his tattoo, since they made such a big deal about the tattoo with Jamie. Plus, I can't remember ever seeing Bishop's M tattoo glowing before, and it was glowing in that shot of him after shooting Forge. Though if Messiah Complex gets rid of Bishop and they kill him cause of being a traitor, I wouldn't complain. I don't like him very much at all.
 
I really liked the first few issues of Thor. A lot. I guess I should read the newest ones.

I'm still in my general "fuck marvel" mode, but they do have some quality books from time to time

I'm the same way.. I didn't even touch World War Hulk, and the only Marvel titles in my box are the Spider-mans, Thor and Deadpool. Spider-man has blown for the past year or so in my opinion..
 
Unfortunately I missed the last part of WWH, but Planet Hulk and WWH kept me sane while the Civil War shit continued to flow. Pretty good surprisingly
 
I don't know how many agree with me, but the two best stories out that are about to complete have got to be Messiah Complex (awesome) and Sinestro Corps War. I've collected every single issue of both. They are just awesome. Really have set me ablaze and refueled for comics. I haven't been this jazzed up since Identity Crisis (and somewhat for Infinite Crisis). House of M was alright, but meandering, tied up, and kind of convulted. That story was in way too many series and I'm still kind of confused over it (and I've read that run twice now).

I guess a bit late to the party in this thread, but but OMD or brand new day or whatever Marvel wants to call it the worst piece of shit I've read in a long, long time. It's horrible from start to finish and kills anything that Spiderman has had over the years. Why not just totally restart the character and be done with the shenanigans. This is probably the worst thing they've done since Clone Wars. Also, they just should have had Aunt May die. It would have been for the best and the most eventual outcome. It could have played across Spidey's mind like Aunt Ben's death. Should I have saved her or shouldn't I, etc. etc.
 
Messiah Complex is so amazing. Every time I read an issue, the whole story blows me away even more. Twists and turns that I never saw coming and they found a way to make me care about characters I normally hated, like Bishop.
