The "Messiah CompleX PWNS Countdown and WWH" Comic Discussion Thread

I know I'm gonna get blasted for this comment but, I wasn't huge fan of "Watchmen." I finally decided to read it several months ago. Everyone said it was great, never heard one bad thing about it, so I purchased the graphic novel, however I was left unsatisfied. After I finished it I lent it to a friend and he disliked it. But he read only read about halfway.

Don't get me wrong, unlike my friend I mildly enjoyed it, and I don't regret buying it. I just don't understand all the praise. I guess it's something you had to read at the time, and grow up with...
 
Even all these years later, there are things in watchmen that normal (even abnormal) comics wont even touch. The combination of comments on society and the comics world has made it a staple of the Graphic Novel set.
 
eh screw collecting series im all into getting tbp and the like especially when it comes to wide spread series events.didnt like the marvel zombies stuff as much as i thought i would it was just too damn disturbing not to mention i doubt itd spread that far that fast even with quicksilver infected. but that world war hulk thing sounds interesting when it gets put in 1 book ill buy it. the only comic im buying now is angel after the fall damn thing is going up in price like gas or gold.


can anyone tell me whats going on with deadpool these days? last time i read the comic LLL were priming him for some big role as a hero or something and he was about to get it going with syrin.....yeah im that out of touch lol. and did they ever do a reveal on the whole shatterstar/ longshot connection or shaterstar kinda becoming or seeming gay?also what happened to all the gen x kids? an do they still do what if comics?

I believe this is a book that just can't possibly live up to the hype anymore. This is one of the first comics that I ever read because of the recommendations. I read it around the time it was named one of the best novels of all time. I seems to be spoken of in revered terms and held on a pedestal. I think that it contains some great ideas and an intriguing story, but if get your comic kicks from people in tights and capes being SUPER-heroes you'll probably walk away disappointed. My feelings after finishing it were much more on the intrigued side than the excited.

You are missing out on a LOT. Not just a DC fanboy comment, there is an amazing amount of indie quality titles out there

I know!! I read some of deadpool's earlier series, like the Circle Chase and regular series, and I thought they were HILARIOUS. Now he just seems kinda...weird. What is the watchman DC series about, you guys make it sound to be really good:???:. Also, are you guys looking to get rid of any of your old comics??
 
Last issue of Cable and Deadpool made me sad.. I'll miss it. So is he going to be a Mighty Avenger now or something? Some guy at the comic book store told me that. I do know that he's going to be in an issue of that new Marvel Comics Presents title. Where will I get my Deadpool kick now? :cry:
 
There's talk that later this year Deadpool is getting a new solo series. Supposed to spin out of the current Wolverine Origins arc. Written by the same writer and drawn by the same artist. I wish we could have kept the team from Cable and Deadpool, but the author has done a pretty good job in Wolverine Origins at portraying Deadpool so I'll reserve judgment till it comes out.
 
Just finished Cable and Deadpool's last issue and it turned out to be as awesome as I knew it would be. Shame it got cancelled as Deadpool is by and far my favorite character and it looks like he won't be getting a new series anytime soon (or ever).

Cool, sounds good. I also agree, Deadool is my favorite character. Besides the Punisher, I have only read a little bit of Wolverine Origins. I can't wait to read Ultimate Origins and Invaders/Avengers.

I hate the art in Origins, but he does draw Deadpool pretty badass in-costume. Fun arc, though. I forgot that I've been reading it.
 
man they had alot of cool series back in the day. i liked the sabertooth mini series as well as the new green goblin series. thunderbolts, the new alpha flight , maverick, backlash man i loved it all. thanks for the info on deadpool now who can tell me about gen x?are they still a team , is anyone dead? also is deadpoll sitl messed up looking or did he finally get his skin fixed?

I agree, and this is coming from a die-hard Marvel guy. If anyone has any suggestions on indepentent stuff please feel free and share. Even though I spend the most money on Marvel comics I'm very open minded and will read anything if it's worth it.

I'm on vol.4 of Y: The Last Man and it's got to be on of the best "non-superhero" comic ever. Thanks again for all the recomendations, I'm really enjoying it.
 
Non-Hero comics:
Bone - Yes, it looks like a kids book. Who cares. Imagine reading a comic of just Calvin's imagination... Also, there is a cow race with a Grandma type character. And she always wins.

Scott Pilgram - Concentrated awesome. I'd explain further, but nothing I can say explains how fun it is.

DMZ - Starts off slow, but gets interesting really fast. Manhattan is now a demilitarized zone, and the story centers around a journalist sent inside. The issue about central park was brilliant.

DEMO - Same writer as DMZ. Brian Wood. He is coming up at the same speed as Brian K Vaughn (Y:The Last man, the last years worth of Lost on TV). 12 seperate issues, they do not connect, they are semi hero related. Example: A young black man with the abilities of Bullseye is sent to war as a sniper. One shot, one kill. I actually suggest checking ebay for the individual issues since they even talk about what music helped create each issue.

Walking Dead - Zombie book that is more about how the people deal with them and each other than just shooting zombies. Robert Kirkman wrote this book and he's pretty damn good (Ult. X-men not withstanding)

Superhero Based:

The Boys - Cant say much about anything after issue 8 or so, but it's the most scarily truthful book about what the JLA/Avengers could be IRL

Invincible - Kirkman again. Mix Spider-Mans and Supermans origins, bring it into modern times and remove the kid friendly demeanor. Some of the most brutal fights I've seen in a comic along with very real emotions with his on again/off again girlfriend.

Theres more, but hell, I havent even been to my shop in 3 weeks so I'm running on comicy fumes

All of these are great recs from SpottedNigel....I'll throw in my hat and recommend these:

The Losers (such an underrated kickass title.)
Hellboy/BPRD (I love Hellboy)
Lost Squad - (sort of like BPRD)
 
Can anyone recomend Mouse Guard? It looks intresting and I've thought about picking it up.

I went to pick up the TPB of Immortal Iron Fist and they didn't have it :cry: Oh well, I get monthly stack in about a week. Can't wait to start reading some Skrull stuff.

EDIT:

I understand Captian America #36 is worth picking up. Hear it's got a shocking ending. I wonder what it is.

Haven't read/heard about Mouse Guard, but I can recommend Maus. That's an incredible graphic novel.
 
Trust me I'm definatly gonna pick it up, it's on my pull list and should be sent to me tomarrow. I really like the new Captian America. After he died I figured it would do a story arc or two then just fad away. I think they did a great job in introducing Bucky as the new Cap. It didn't seem forced, they went slow and took their time with it. I didn't think I would like it at first but I do. Still it's tough filling those shoes.

Another great Marvel comic is Fantastic Four. issue #554 is a great issue to get back into the series. It's been stale for so long. Millar & Hitch are turn this title into gold.
 
Yeah, Bucky totally kicked ass when fighting the Serpent Squad. I was looking up some of the Captain America covers for issues #39 and it says it all. I picked up Fantastic 4 #555, but I have been trying to get the one before. Also, The Young Avengers Presents is a good series so far.

I saw the 2nd Printing of FF #554 at a Borders yesterday. I hate having to get the 2nd Printing. I had to do that with the first few issues of Cival War and Cap America #25 (his death)

I got the Kick Ass #1 sketch varient last month. Cost me $20.

Out of curiosity how much money do you guys spend on comics a month? For me (including TPB) probably $130.
 
I'd say it's pretty close to $120. I'm looking at scaling that back some. It'd be nice to get it down to $100 a month.
 
Well, I used to buy a lot of TPBs from Borders. But then someone there pissed me off:bomb: trying to tell me crap about an order I put in every time for a TPB. So I don't buy from there any more, but a local comic shop has some good comics and stuff. I probably spend about $40-50. I don't buy a lot of variants, unless they are like 1:2, other than that, I just buy what Marvel Comics look good. But if I need to buy bags and boards, it is a bit higher. The BCW bags work the best, but the guy at my place sells them once and a while. He sells Comic Care bags which suck, they are supposed to be current size, but are a little bit bigger in the width and length.:bomb:

I am trying to get the Fantastic four 554 Skrull Variant off of Ebay. Otherwise I will get the regular off of Wizard.com
 
My subscriptions usually cost me $80-$90, plus I buy a few TPB. The place I do my orders send them in bags & boards so that's nice.

Were does everyone get their subscriptions from? I order mine from Comic Fusion.com They've been doing a great job, but sometimes I ask them to pull something and I end up not getting it. Happened twice, not a big deal.

Generation X has disbanded. Sync and Skin are dead. Jubilee (depowered)is with the New Warriors, Penance is with the Loners, M is with X-factor, and Mondo is nowhere to be found, thank God!

As far as the new Deadpool series that Daniel Way is going to write.....Well I despise Wolverine Origins, but his take on Deadpool is horrendous. The way I see it, he couldn't find a voice for the character and decided to make him crazy. It's a damn shame too, because Way can write some funny stuff. But I will miss Nicieza and Brown. When we interviewed Nicieza he said he would probably never go back to do another Deadpool series, but hey you never know, money does talk.

I did a review of the softcover edition of Mouseguard this past Friday on my site:

So yes, I highly recommend the series. Someone mentioned Maus as well. Athough the feel of that book is completely different, it is also excellent read.
 
For me, I usually just go and get whatever I feel like that comes into Borders/Barnes and Nobe in terms of singles and take advantage of the Border's coupons as much as I can when it comes to TPBs/graphic novels. I finally found a comic shop in my area, though I need to drive a bit to it, so I only go every other week or so. The guy that runs the shop usually just pulls whatever he thinks I'll like/whatever I've told him in advance. I've been really liking some of the Virgin Comics that have come out. I really don't average anything on any given month. It just depends on how I feel/what I want to get at the time.

Anyway, to add to the discussion from earlier, three other indies that I would recommend that are phenomenal are The Exterminators, Ex Machina, and 100 Bullets. All are excellent, especially The Exterminators and Ex Machina where they haven't dragged at all, but 100 Bullets has some parts where it drags in the middle.

My local library has vol.1 - vol.8

I read the first 4 and it was pretty good. I wouldn't buy it but I'll continue to check them out. It is starting to drag. I hear the series is wrapping up.

The first few are excellent and superb storytelling, towards the middle it drags a bit, but has picked back up recently.

I first got into the Runaways, by reading the team up with the Young Avengers in the Civil War. I can't wait for the team up in the Secret Invasion.:D:D
 
I think Whedon's arc will be a lot more entertaining in TPB. The delays have absolutely killed any momentum. I really hope the red-head chick is the person he adds to the team. I think she adds a good dynamic to the team. Sorta like a grown-up Molly.
 
Yeah, I see what your saying. I am trying to get the Marvel Team Ups with the Top Cow Production comics. Like Wolverine/Darkness, I already have a couple of the Punisher/Witchblade.
 
My thoughts on Venom:

The current Venom (Mac Gargan/Scorpion) is becoming very interesting. I like the cannibalistic development however I wonder where it came from? I know the old Eddie Brock Venom always said, "I want to eat your brains," but I thought it was just a scare tactic.

There hasn't been a great Venom arc in Spider-Man since before the "Lethal Protector" mini series about 15 years ago. I want to see the symbiote return to Eddie, but I hate the idea of him having cancer. They've made him into such a weak almost meaningless character now, and I don't like that. Honestly Marvel is doing a piss-poor job in keeping me up to date with my favorite comic book character. I still have Ultimate Spider-Man to look forward to, but I'd rather see the Earth-616 Venom return to his former glory.

P.S. I also want more Toxin.

I thought he was ment to be an up-and-coming new character, but Marvel hasn't touched him in years. They need to develop some of their new characters, and Toxin seems to fit the bill. He's the son of Carnage for crying out loud.

I got into Runaways a year or two ago. I read the first four TPBs but have sort of trailed off from there. I always wanted to keep up with it, but I just haven't for some reason. I'll probably get back into them because of this thread. The first two books were incredible reads, especially with those God like creatures (forget their names).
