Lance Storm has a really big hard-on for Ring Of Honor

Giving Back: ROH
JUly 22, 2008

I am very excited about his coming weekend. This Friday is the Canadian debut of Ring of Honor and I’m going to be a part of it. As you should all know by now I will be appearing at the Friday ROH show in Toronto as well as the Saturday PPV taping in Detroit. I’m a huge believer in Ring of Honor and I’ve been plugging the company and these shows specifically, very hard in recent weeks. I’ve been writing articles (like this one), doing media interviews with newspapers, and radio stations (I’m on Fight Network Radio this coming Thursday); I’ve been doing everything I can to help makes these shows a success, including doing appearances at both event.

What you don’t know though, is that I’m not doing all of this for the usual pro-wrestling reasons. I am not appearing at these events or doing any of this publicity for a payday. I am doing this on my own time and for free. Ring of Honor isn’t paying me to come to their shows or promote them, I volunteered. I enjoy ROH that much and I believe in ROH that much.

I’ve always believed that guys, who’ve succeeded in this business, should give back to the industry that treated them so well. Since I’ve retired I’ve done my best to do that, and it’s actually been quite rewarding. You often see retired, or well past their prime stars, taking Indy bookings where they demand huge paydays and then produce poor/lazy matches and won’t even put a guy over to help elevate the future talent of the company that’s paying them. Stars like this seem to take their win and their payday and ride off into the sunset leaving the promotion, that just paid them, a little worse off than it was before they arrived. That’s not giving back, that’s just sucking the industry dry, and that is a real shame.

I’m not the biggest name in this business, and adding my name to a poster isn’t going to sellout too many buildings, but I have made an effort to give back and Ring of Honor is a very deserving recipient.

My relationship with ROH started when I agreed to my first post-WWE match with them, where I challenged the ROH World Champion, Bryan Danielson. Admittedly I was paid quite handsomely for that match, but I don’t think anyone in the building thought I was coasting on my name value or gave them anything less than my all in that match. It was an excellent match and I worked every bit as hard as everyone else on the card did and tapped out clean in the middle, to the ROH World Champion. I may have left with a good payday, but at least I left the fans with a great match and their Champion with a big win.

I’m at the point now in my life, where I don’t think I have a match of that caliber left in me, but I still have 17 years of knowledge and experience to offer and I was thrilled when ROH approached me about sharing that knowledge and experience with their locker room. ROH has a fantastic talent roster. They are young, hardworking, and very talented and hopefully combining that with my experience and knowledge it can become even greater. I’ve been doing this via DVD and email for a while now and it’s been a lot of fun and quite rewarding. ROH has been sending me DVDs and in return I’ve been watching them and offering advice, praise, and criticism on the over all product, matches, and talent.

This has been providing me with tremendous viewing enjoyment (these guys have some great matches), while offering ROH talent a more experienced outside perspective on their product. I was originally doing this just through Gabe Sapolsky (ROH booker) but I have since been interacting directly with individual talent and I cannot believe how receptive they all are to both criticism and suggestions.

This is the sign of a true professional, in my opinion. A guy who puts his ego aside and listens to not only the good but the bad and is willing to debate and discuss a different perspective in hopes of finding the best possible balance. Every person I’ve interacted with in ROH has been both receptive and grateful for my input and because of that, when Gabe asked if I’d be willing to come to some live events to offer my advice in person, I not only said yes, but said I would do it for free.

Ring of Honor is an amazing company, with a very talented, hardworking locker room. I’m showing them my respect by coming to their events to give back. I hope you show them your respect by being one of hottest crowds they’ve ever worked. I will be signing autographs and who knows what else at these shows, I hope to see you there.

In the words of Billy Red Lyons, “Don’t you dare miss it!”

Maybe it's because Mark Henry is the Silverback?

Or maybe they're prepping the belt for Killings who will deem it to be "platinum" and thus more valuable then gold?

survivor series 06, HBK went under the ropes during the elimination match and posed with her and she thought it was nitro.

So there was no explanation for the change? Just, "Oh HAI GAIZ! WE HAS A NEW ECW BELT!"?

Maybe there's hope that the spinner will die soon too...

If I remember right, Zen Legend said some racist stuff in another thread while Zen Davis was ruthlessly trolling someone else on CAG. I wasn't paying too much attention so if anyone wants to elaborate/correct, feel free.
That new ECW belt looks like ass.
I actually really like the new belt, it's subtle not like that damn spinner.

You know, the sad part is that when it comes down to it, Mark Henry was, and will always be, the last man to hold the original ECW belt. I know it's not the same belt, but it still looked like it, which is close enough.

I just don't understand the switch. THAT'S the belt they change? Not the spinner, even though the guy whose belt it is isn't even on the same show with it anymore? Way to spend that money wisely, WWE.

... on that note, stop making new belts. Dear god, they just keep getting uglier. Between the spinner, the Diva belt, and now this new ECW title, I really have to begin to wonder who is being paid to develop these and WHY.

The last well-redesigned belt was the undisputed title... so of course that's the one we got rid of. Nice.
IMO they've got a long way to go before Punk's reign gets into Rey-Rey territory. Punk is getting screwed out of clean finishes, whereas Rey was getting pinned in non-title matches on a weekly basis (and his weird "this title is a GIFT!" promos didn't help either).

I guess it's sort of a weird booking situation, since they gotta establish him as a guy who can hang with the main eventers only AFTER he wins the title. In WWE logic you just can't go from jobbing to the Miz to pinning Batista clean, without some kinda "building up" phase to bridge the gap.

This of course makes the Rey thing even more strange in hindsight, since they DID spend time building him up, even giving him the Royal Rumble push and what have you... oh well :whistle2:(.
Oh, I absolutely agree, Sir Busta. Rey Jr.'s World Heavyweight title reign was a very unfair and poorly handled. :whistle2:(
I actually really like the new belt, it's subtle not like that damn spinner.
Or the baby seal vomit known as the Divas title. :whistle2:#

That pretty much sums it up. ZL's was just the last straw in a long line of asshatteryTM. Zen just seemed to snap, for lack of a better description.

yeah i remember being a bit surprised at the Z. Legend ban, but when i saw that Zen Davis had opened his own thread dedicated to himself and came back here and went off i wasnt the least bit surprised to see him booted.

Is something wrong with my eyes or did you just use 4 Russian letters at the end of that word?

Also, I kind of like the new ECW belt... it's a nice change from the usual gold belts. I always thought the ECW belts were ugly as hell too..

Joe Marshall's made WWE's belts since '98 - none of his designs hold a candle to Reggie Parks', who made the classic Winged Eagle WWF title, the '86'02 WWF Tag titles, and the '86- '08 IC belts among many, many others in wrestling. The new ECW belt is pretty good - it's like a silver 3rd gen IWGP belt, and is a better knock-off of that IWGP belt than the TNA title is - at least this belt's text can be read, although I do prefer the TNA title's side plates.

One rumor going around the belt community is that the new ECW title belt was going to be used for the WWE Title - with the HHH iron cross logo on the side plates being cited as evidence. It's also worth noting that the belt does use the colors usually used for HHH's tights - black and silver. Given how little the ECW Title means compared to the WWE Title, I can't fathom them changing the ECW Title up at the expense of HHH getting a customized title belt.

It's not a bad theory, actually. Looking at that picture on the last page, there's certainly a case to be made. The ECW/eagle portion looks grafted on and not really part of the overall look of the belt... but the telling part is right above the eagle's head: that's the top of an iron cross. It doesn't fit with the eagle, and it's unmistakably the top of a cross, evidenced by looking no further than the side plates.

Another point is that this is ECW and Mark Henry. Why, exactly, would either of those two things warrant a change in the belt? There's no explanation for it... unless they just happened to have a belt that they weren't using. Sure, it's easy to say that they just wanted to 're-brand' it as WWECW, but then why not change everything, including the logo?

This all sound really conspiracy theory, I admit, but there are valid questions here. It truly makes no sense to intiate the creation of a new belt for the C-brand or for Mark Henry. So, it would seem a logical stance that maybe, just maybe, the belt was already done and sitting around... they just added an ECW piece to it.

Of course, the big question would still be unanswered... if it was HHH's belt, why didn't he use it? He's got the ego, so why turn down his own personal title? The only thing I can think of is that plans changed. The Khali match doesn't really jibe with this, but it's possible that they're yanking the title off of him sooner rather than later. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to introduce a personal title only to have the person drop it a month later (Unless, of course, you're Edge... but then you only got a 'variation' as opposed to a new belt, huh?).

I don't know, it's late and I'm rambling. Shutting up now. :whistle2:#
yeah i remember being a bit surprised at the Z. Legend ban...
They weren't his first racist posts so, considering that, I'd say it was overdue. Whatever, though, it's done and over with.

A site with tons of Memphis wrestling newspaper articles, including one on Lance Russell retiring in 1977. He kept on announcing, off and on, for another 30 years in Memphis, and had a wrestling announcing career dating back to the '50s. One of the all-time greats, without a doubt. There's also some stuff on Lawler retiring in '77, and that ended when attendance went from 9,000+ per week down to 2,000 when he wasn't there. -
http://www.marksfiles.com/news.html

Reading through some of the historic Lawler pieces reminded me of how great that Lawler/Duggan vs. Dibiase/Rhodes segment was on Raw, and I can't wait to see Duggan clash with Ted Jr. after seeing his unbelievably great wars with Ted Sr. in Mid-South. If Ted Sr. interferes or a loaded black glove is involved in the finish to the inevitable Duggan/Lawler vs. DiBiase/Rhodes match, I will immensely happy.

Here's a review of just one of the great Lawler-DiBiase matches from the '80s.

Daaaaaayum. That's corny as hell and awesome all at the same time.

I was going to wait for the set to get broken up like the Royal Rumble Anthology did but I don't know if I can resist the DVD cooler. Hopefully it'll drop in price a couple times before it vanishes.

I'll wait for reviews about the build quality of the SS box before buying it. The RR box was a piece of fucking shit.

I don't believe that the new ECW title was going to be "Triple H's" belt. The sideplates have "iron crosses," to be sure, but they're quite subtle (remember, if it's subtle, that means WWE did it by accident) and don't really resemble the style HHH uses, given how they taper on the sides.

That is actually pretty cool. I'd be more sold if it had actual handles on it like a real cooler.

Also, your sig is awesome. There should be more high fives when simutaneous running bulldogs are going down from opposite corners of the ring.
you mean the fact that it looks like styrofoam doesn't instill you with confidence?!

I'll get it regardless, but the worth of that set will go way up if it contains THIS music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bwV1-Gzw3o
Yeah. I miss those old standby WWF PPV themes...the Wrestlemania one was probably the best, it was the wrestling equivalent of the Monday Night Football theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHJhhDSRJaE

The Royal Rumble (and original Summerslam) theme was pretty memorable too:

The Survivor Series theme was pretty forgettable by comparison.

Wow. I had completely forgotten about the PPV placeholder music.

I totally marked out for all of them. Classics in an era where they keep plugging the same cookie cutter 'rawk' bands like Saliva, Puddle of Mudd, and shit like that.

It's crazy how you end up remembering some of these themes as soon as the first few notes hit. For example, I didn't THINK I remembered the Rougeau Brother's theme when I saw it posted in a forum, but the moment I heard the intro the memories clicked right away. Some unparalleled cheesy '80s awesomeness right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3PCytlXaQM

- edit I will be renting Summerslam 1996 as soon as that set comes out. That was a fantastic PPV and my return into watching wrestling.
LOVE that song.

Why were the Rougeaus heels? They wanted to emigrate to the US, but that made people boo them?
I'm honestly not sure if that's sarcasm (ie you know what was going on), but I'll explain anyway:

They were really obnoxious about it...waving little Amercan flags around, but being really obnoxious about it. Plus they acted like sissy heels, which didn't endear them to people - they'd attack some fan favorites, and then wave their little flags and smile like that automatically makes it all better.

I'll have to look into tickets for the ROH show. I had no idea it was going on until today.

No, that clears it up. I started watching right after WMIV, so by that time the Rougeaus were as meaningful as La Resistance was by the time Rob Conway was thrown into the mix.

Man, that Royal Rumble theme isn't complete without Hercules or Tugboat standing in front of a blue backdrop telling the viewer with a straight face that they are going to win the Rumble match.

You should. Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black should be a pretty amazing match.

I'm pretty sure that they always sell GA tickets at the door, the day of the show.
Man, that Royal Rumble theme isn't complete without Hercules or Tugboat standing in front of a blue backdrop telling the viewer with a straight face that they are going to win the Rumble match.
I'm more imaging announcer-era Vince McMahon voice saying something like "TA-NIIIIGHT!!!!! in the annual Royal Rumble, 30 SOOPERSTARS compete...including - Duke the DOMPSTER Droese, The BarBARRRIAN, EARTHQUAKE!, Doug Gilbert, and THE OOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLTIMATE WARRRRRRRIOR!"

I seem to recall the very first SNME that was a year or so ago when it was first brought back to NBC, at the beginning I marked out like a kid because they had some generic "pulse" background stock music playing while the wrestlers introduced themselves and their feuds - all before the opening credits.

It's a beautiful thing. Reminds me of when ECW - for maybe one week - had PiP promos while the guys wrestled. Like Kevin Thorne would be wrestling while the camera was on a hard shot, and the upper right corner would have a promo where he would stand there and Ariel would blah blah blah. Totally like the old WWF Superstars show.

Man, I still swear to fuckin' God that the one thing pro-wrestling on the whole needs (TNA copycats this from WWE entirely, so they need it too) is to dump and revamp their production, pacing, and formatting of the show.

Myke, WWE's ECW has had that stuff since its inception - they just did one a few weeks ago for Bourne, and when done well, those PiP things can be effective at getting a wrestler or angle over quickly. Unfortunately, that hasn't really happened with WWE's obviously scripted versions of them.

It's 9:08 and Impact's already had half a dozen guys on it just talking about stuff while Mike and Don YELL ABOUT EVERYTHING BECAUSE NO ONE IN TNA CAN TALK IN A NORMAL TONE.

So I take ti I didn't miss anything, Jay? I just turned the show on since I had been embroiled in a score duel on Rock band with a fellow CAG.

Ah, okay. Well, what I did miss, as in I wish she was out there, was Christy Hemme. Her fine ass was nowhere to be found when the Infection made their way to the ring.

Karen's Angle debuts with a wacky porno video filter over everything (including photos), while Kaz acts emo and shit. Nothing about him addressing his "release", as TNA's advertised for days, yet. Maybe it'll be in part 2 - yes, Kaz's character is apparently interesting enough to warrant a multi-part interview.

According to DW, Matt Morgan made the jobber join his mile high club...okay... Great promo from the Guns - their best one yet in TNA, especially in the case of Sabin.
