The NHL 2007 Playoffs Thread - 2007 Stanley Cup Champions: Anaheim Ducks
NEW YORK (April 22, 2007) – Calgary Flames goaltender Jamie McLennan has been suspended five games, Calgary coach Jim Playfair has been fined $25,000 and the Flames’ organization has been fined $100,000 for a variety of actions late in Game Five of the team’s Western Conference Quarter-final series against the Detroit Red Wings.

McLennan was assessed a Match Penalty for slashing Detroit’s Johan Franzen at 17:01 of the third period, one of four different penalties the Flames were assessed for aggressive and illegal use of the stick (slashing or cross-checking) in the closing minutes of play. The Red Wings led 5-1 at the time.

“In our pre-playoff conference calls with the coaches and General Managers of the respective organizations, we addressed a number of topics – and one of them was actions late in the game when the score was out of hand,” said Colin Campbell, NHL Senior Executive Vice president and Director of Hockey Operations. “The coach and the organization must be held accountable for the players’ actions.”

McLennan’s suspension begins with Game Six of the series, tonight in Calgary.
Good, he deserves it for that slash.

Man... New Jersey and New York are not gonna have a chance.

Yeah! Keep going you guys in Red. xD

edit: Alright you guyz in red I want to see 3 more periods like that!

Nice to see Franzen get some retribution for that cheap slash by that piece of shit McLennan. Now, thanks to Franzen, he can sit out the first 4 games of next year too

Hopefully the Stars win tomorrow night. Of all the play-off teams left, they're by far the weakest. That way the Ducks and Sharks can kill each other for 6-7 games, while Detroit coasts by Dallas in 4-5 games.

Honestly, I'm hoping Homer is ok after that stick to the face. They took him to the hospital with bandages on his eyes, so that's not a good sign :(

:bomb: I hope Detroit literally fucks-up Calgary next year when they first play. Serious injuries to Inginla or Kiprusoff would be awesome. An eye for an eye, Flamers.

Tight game tonight. As stated above it sure was nice to see Franzenstien get the winner.

I'm going to enjoy that Game 7 tomorrow.

game 7 is huge tomorrow. ducks or red wings, im not sure who id rather play the next round, we had better success against detroit than we have anaheim.

Wow. I agree with McLennan getting the 5-game suspension, and probably the team fine. But fining the coach $25,000? Seems a bit odd. I think Jamie acted alone, I don't think Playfair put him in there to do that. If you were going to put it a goon, it wouldn't be a goalie.

But he has to have some semblance of control over his team, and not allow them to be throwing cheap shots left and right in the last few minutes of the game.

Yeah, good point. More players than JM were running rampant, and Playfair wasn't keeping his team under control very well. I forgot about some of the stuff that went down before the big slash.

Should be an interesting game tonight - game 7's are always fun.

nah, playfair put him in there with the sole purpose of making sure detroit knew where the crease was. he was hacking at players the moment got in there. i dont think playfair told him to slash anybody in the gut, but he certainly put him in there throw jabs and let detroit know that they cant bully kiprusoff

In the end it worked like a charm didn't it? Calgary is gone. Kirpusoff and/or Inginla might not be on that team next year. Plus, the best part of all is Franzen ended their season.

Welp.. I'm sorry to say Wings fans our friendship isn't gonna get any better. Here's to hoping you guys choke once again and the Sharks show up. xD

I wouldn't call losing to the Sharks, choking. Disappointing would be more like it. Should be a good series, Barry Melrose was on ESPN saying calling this the probable best series of the play-offs. Too bad it couldn't have waited until the next round when Detroit was well rested after dominating Dallas, and San Jose was worn down by Anaheim.

Ah well.

I was rooting for them mainly for Turco. He won me over during the All Star game (talking while making saves, very entertaining) and he played brilliantly throughout the series. It sucks when someone plays that well and loses, but it happens.

Still behind you Sharks fans, I really like your team for some reason. I rooted for Detroit in 97 and 98, but it's someone else's turn (plus now their a division rival to my Jackets, who didn't exist back then).

Go Sharks!

Lessee 2nd round predictions:

West
Wings over Sharks in 6
Ducks over Canucks in 4... how is a team that got shut-out 3 times in the first round even in the 2nd round?

East:
Sabres over Rangers in 7
Devils over Senators in 6

Yeah I would have liked to have seen Dallas advance for Turco. The guy is hilarious and very good for the sport.

Wings Sharks should be very entertaining.

Sabres over Rangers in 7? lolz you mean 4 right?

Hey Vancouver? you guys suck ass! come on... you're letting some DUCKS beat you.

edit: God damn you fucking piece o shit cansucks...

Rangers had a good start and finish, they forget about the period inbetween tho. I'm just glad they made it this far. The Sabres are real tough, and If the Rangers won the series that would be a double blessing. I picked the Canes to win the cup last year and they did, thats actually my favorite team and my #2 team is always where Jagr goes. Granted when the Rangers won the cup with Messier that was golden.

Let's see Rangers just swept Atlanta, so you think they'll get swept by Buffalo, good logic. I see there is no bottom to the well of stupidity you drink from

Dood... saying the Rangers swept Atlanta is like saying Phonix swept Washington... It doesn't mean jack fucking squat and it sure doesn't mean the Rangers are a team to fear or that they are going anywhere. Want further proof... Look at their division and where they finished, below them was the Islanders and then Phily. They are fucking spoon fed a spot into the playoffs. Further more it shows how sad the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference really is... xD

The Ducks brought Vancouver back to reality in a hurry. The speed of the Ducks is overwhelming. I don't see the Canucks lasting more than 5 this series missing those D-men.

Sabres kinda remind me of the Pistons. They just turn it on when needed and coast when they can.

Have to admit I'm a bit nervous about the Wings playing the Sharks. Especially with Holmstrom out for game 1.
Especially with Holmstrom out for game 1.
i wish holmstrom wasnt out, and hopefully hes only out the first game. i dont need to hear "well if holmstrom was healthy" from my gf for the next 6 months.

Pish-posh, the Sharks are a great opponent for Detroit. Why? Because they actually have to take San Jose seriously. I honestly think Detroit would get in that mind-set of we're a #1 seed, they're a #8 seed, and just expect to coast to the 2nd round, and that's why they'd lose. Everyone knows San Jose is good, and Detroit has to be on their top game to win. On the flip-side EVERY team plays their best against Detroit, because they know they have to in order to get a win.

Tonight's game will undoubtedly set the tone for the series, I'm looking for Detroit to go up 1-0.
I see it's going to be on VS only, not FSD
its not even in HD (directv) either. damn them. well it was a nice first period, too bad theres 2 left, you can never count detroit out. especially with how well they played at the end of the period there.

The Sens/Devils game was insane last time I checked.

I'm listening to the Sharks game and the stupid announcers were making it sound like they weren't doing too good yet the wouldn't say the fucking score so I got online at work even though it's not as easy to get online here. I feel better now but yeah they have to keep it up if they want to win.

And with that I'm gonna go back to being sick.

I see my Sens are doing well too. :)
Why can't we score? Honestly ya play 25 seconds of bad hockey and you lose. :whistle2:(
The Red Wings were playing great in the 2nd and 3rd, but Nabakov was just playing amazing. The Sharks aren't going to get off that lucky when Holmstrom comes back, the wings really missed him in front of the net tonight.

All I've been hearing is Holstrom this Holstrom that... but this is Detroit we're talking about... Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Chelios, Lang, Draper... hell Bertuzzi... :cough: Choke :cough: In all seriousness I do have a cold. lol

I know he's important, but it's not like he's our goalie or something. San Jose capitalized fully on Detroit's few mistakes, and Detroit just ran into a brick wall named Nabakov. I really hope the Wings can figure him out in time for game 2 or this might be a shockingly short series.

I sure hope not. That was one of the most boring playoff games I've seen. Nabby played good in the 2nd. Other than that it was blocked shot followed by 50 footer that he saw the whole way. My girlfriend literally fell asleep during the game.

I really hope I'm wrong... everyone was expecting a very fast-paced high scoring series between these teams. If tonight really did set the tone we're looking at a lot of 1 or 2 goal games ahead. I'm not really sure who that benefits in the long-run though.

Finally! Nice, lets make it nice and long for the Ducks eh? xD

BTW, selannie ya might want to use your LEGAL stick next time... maybe then you won't get stoned all night. lolz

Vancouver pulled one out to get even. Still see Anaheim winning that series, but they could wear down over a long series.

And unless something changes, it'll be Buffalo/Ottawa and San Jose/Anaheim.

Go Sharks.

I like setting myself up for disappointment I guess. I expect the Wings to come back and win this series still. I also expect the Pistons to win the NBA title. I know it's the wrong topic, but seriously who is going to beat the Pistons now? Certainly not Dallas or Miami

that first goal, i mean it happens. but i cant believe hasek played that puck for the second goal. detroit needs to do something, quick.
