I five-starred 3 songs this morning on hard. Sure, they were More Than a Feeling, I Wanna be Sedated, and Smoke on the Water, but it was a big accomplishment for me. I think I'll just start at hard setting with GH2. :D

Does anyone know the criteria for 5 starring a song? I swear sometimes I feel like I did awesome, and I hit like 95% of the notes, but I only get 4 stars. For that matter, what's the criteria for 4 stars?

I'm 99% positive its based on the score.

EDIT: Shouldn't leave the page up for so long anymore.

I'm at home and I started playing. They changed the songs from the demo... as in, Shout at the Devil has different notes that you have to play and the song itself is slightly different in parts. I like this version better though. Now I'm playing through Mother... impressions later.

Shit, this is incredible. My issue with GH1 was that the first 3 or 4 sets were (for the most part) no fun after a while since the songs were way too simple. Not the case here. The songs are incredible, they have wicked good solos, and they're challenging enough to be fun.

Edit: Message in a Bottle is insanely good. It's clear that RedOctane really knew what they were doing with this game... those moments where the bass has most of the interesting parts and you play a brief few (albeit awesome) notes are some of the best. It's hard to explain, but this takes a shit on GH1.

Question for anyone who has ever preordered anything from Gamestop online: Do they SHIP on the release date, or do you actually GET the game on the release date?

Oh, and I have another little one: If Harmonix decided to do band-themed versions of GH with 20-30 songs from 1 band at $20-$30 each, what bands would you shell out for? Me:

AC/DC
The Beatles (band+solo work would be great)
Iron Maiden (maybe add some Bruce solo stuff to make it sweeter)
Judas Priest
Led Zeppelin
Metallica
Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
Slayer

Usually, they ship on the release date. But FFXII just recently shipped like a week before the release date, so if they're getting them in early, they might ship them out early. Not likely though.

Damn, that sucks.

Oh, and I narrowed down the 4 Iron Maiden songs I would want the most in GH3 or whatever:

Fear of the Dark
Hallowed Be Thy Name
The Trooper
Wasted Years

I made a list of 32, with at least one song from all but 1 IM album, and then used brackets. Those 4 won.

Well, I had about twenty minutes left, and then it jumped back up to three hours. Basically, I should have this ready to go by the end of the night and will post impressions. I want to initially try it on the DLP so I can see how 480p looks. I might bring it up here by the computer and get it going in the chatroom though. Depends on how long it takes and how tired I am.

EDIT: Alright, it's done.

It deserves a double post.

Awesome. Awesome awesome.

Progressive scan, WIDESCREEN, and lag calibration, though that last one actually hurt more than helped. I noticed in the unlockables that certain guitars were only available through completing the Easy, Normal, Hard, and Expert careers, so I started out on Easy WITH lag calibrated. Umm... I sucked real hard. Turned it off, and I was magically delicious once again. Progressive scan and widescreen look excellent, though I have a border on the right and bottom of the screen. I'm pretty sure other games don't do this, but it's no biggy.

The characters look amazing, they added some reflections to the buttons, burning hands, and other little touches. I've only played a couple songs (and not even on Expert), but so far it's AMAZING.

If you don't have this game yet, or don't have a preorder, go to a midnight release party or camp out. This game is going to sell, sell, sell.

WHAT? Holy shit. I can't believe this game has widescreen and progressive scan.

I can't fucking wait now. I might just buy it tomorrow. fuck, I should just buy it now, I have nothing to do tonight and I'm drinking by myself.

I'm really pissed I still don't have this.

Tuesday is, like, a million years away.

evanft - nice Maiden choices, IMO. I think one of the few bands I'd choose over Maiden for a solo game would be Metallica...pre-Black Album, of course.

They screwed up the PS2 controller controls! NOOOOOOOO! Now I can't play this at school in my car without the guitar!:cry:

That is a hugemongous setback.

Anyway, I'll be in the chatroom for a wee bit. Don't hope for anything ridiculous since I just started and have nothing unlocked. I'm also going to bed pretty soon, since I've been up for almost 24 hours.

EDIT: Nevermind about the chatroom. I can't get into it for some reason.

Guitar Hero: Kill Em All Edition. I wish.

I also agree the wait for Tuesday is terrible. I tried to see if I could get it early at Circuit City today, but the registers would not let them scan the game.
fuck you and not wanting to include Run to the Hills, for at least the bass line, in GH3.
Sorry, those 4 songs I listed are all better than RTTH.

IGN Review

Oh, and if you buy the game at BB, you get a free Wayne's World DVD.

They changed the vocalists on Tattoooed Love Boys and Killing in the Name Of. I'm not familiar with the original songs, so I can't vouch for their authenticity, but having heard a few other Rage songs, I'd say this guy's just as unfit as the first one. Tattooed Love Boys is phenomenally easier to play now though. It was really ridiculous on the hacked demo.

New characters are pretty cool, old characters look pretty different except for Judy Nails (whom most of you have already seen) and Johnny Napalm. Axel's got a weird (dumb) looking face now, Izzy looks really young, Clive looks cooler, and Xavier looks like a totally, completely different person. He's no longer buff and dreaded. He's wearing a leisure suit and sports an afro. Pandora (who I truly hated in the first game) is... well, kinda hot now. Her second outfit's (yes, all characters, except the unlocked ones, have second outfits you can buy) shirt is all ripped up, showing some... stuff. Grim Ripper is awesome.

Playing as Clive Winston, I enabled star power. Like the first game, they all have special animations and such. This time, I think they have two or maybe more instead of just one. Clive, for example, makes the guitar hover and stuff, but his second one is great. He whips out a violin bow and starts playing with that, though it's just a preset animation and not actually what you're playing. Still, I laughed when I saw it.

There are tons of new guitars, including two new ones for each difficulty. You get one for beating the career mode, the other for five-starring. Each guitar has three additional skins.

After beating the last song in a tier/set, you're asked to do an encore. The camera zooms and everyone cheers. It then gives you a dialogue, asking if you want to do another song or not. I don't know what happens if you decline, but if you accept, the venue sports something new (lighting or other effects, such as people throwing beer bottles [out of respect?] on to the stage) and then you launch into the fifth song of the set. They're usually longer songs, such as War Pigs.

The game rocks. I'm about halfway through Expert now.

Oh man, Trogdor is a bonus track?! Holy hell, that's awesome! I'm hoping to God that my game comes on time (I ordered from RedOctane).

So wait, I'm going to have to play through lower difficulties to unlock some of those guitars? That's fucking lame.

Thinking about Pandora is giving me a major stiffy, though. I was always her in the first game.

I can post pics, Thief.

So... I kinda beat it. It's really really good. The venues get bigger and bigger, and the songs more and more epic. The ONLY song I failed was Misirlou, and I got it on the second try. Some of them were very difficult, but I somehow managed to scrape by.

Unlocked all the guitars (aside from the difficulty-related ones) and their finishes, outifts, and everything except for one of the bonus, behind-the-scenes videos. Also tried out a few bonus tracks. Now these are going to take some time. The Shadows Fall song is impossible, and the Buckethead song is hard as well. I tried them both just once and failed pretty miserably. Beat Thunderhorse (not familiar with Metalocolypse. Dethklok or any of that, but it was fairly flat sounding yet fun) and the Freezepop song. It was fun, but maybe not on par with everything else I've heard by them. I'll have to play it again.

I'm pretty burnt out. I played through the whole thing this morning/afternoon, and I'm a bit tired of it. Having played so long though, I kinda got into "the zone" on Freebird. I struggled, but I absolutely NAILED certain parts that I still can't believe. Speaking of which, the whole Freebird thing (I won't spoil it) is totally amazing. It's... out there, but really funny.

I'll try out some multiplayer tonight.

I'm still debating what I wanna do with this game. I'm definitely getting it Wednesday, I'm just not sure whether I should get it with a guitar (I still have my one from GH1) or seperately and pick up a wireless guitar down the road. Though getting it with a guitar now would let me play multiplayer right away. Decisions decisions.

My problem with the wireless guitar is the price and the lack of necessity. I already have two guitars (one of which, after today's thrashing, is starting to break down a bit) and wouldn't mind getting the bundle to have the new and improved guitar in case this one ever dies, but I don't need wireless freedom. I have extension cables if necessary, and I only use those if I play multiplayer so we each have enough room to move around if we want.

Yeah, that's the other thing. I have absolutely NO need for a wireless guitar, but I'm like "Well, wireless is pretty damn cool." I think I'm just gonna pick a bundle up Wednesday.

Christmas just came early. Found the only copy at my local FYE. Been playing multiplayer with my friends for the last hour or so. Gonna eat and and then play some more. Peace.

In Coop, you can now pick your part instead of player one/left being lead guitar and two/right being bass/rhythm. It also keeps track of your score and star rating, similar to career mode. I don't know if there's any reward or objective in it, but it's kinda cool.

Face-off is the original Guitar Hero multiplayer, with one person playing a part, the other playing a different part, and then both playing together occasionally. The difference is you can now individually select difficulties. I'm not 100% how the scores are factored, but I believe that I (playing on Expert) received 50 points per note, while my dad (on Easy and Medium) would get 100 or something. Honestly, it's hard to tell when you're trying to play these songs on Expert and watch the other person's score and do quick math. Anyway, I guess that's how it becomes a competition of scores, since the person on Expert has a ton more to play and a much better chance of scoring higher. You also are only allowed to play the lead. No choosing of parts here.

New to the game is Pro Face-off. It was unlocked after beating Expert, though I guess that it would be unlocked on Medium or Hard as well (Easy still has a shorter/incomplete career mode, just like the original). In it, both players play the entire selected song simultaneously on the same difficulty. No back and forth, bass and lead stuff. You both play the whole thing together. The point is that the original Face-off truly isn't a fairly competitive thing. For example, I played You Got Another Thing Comin' on Easy with my mom in the original Guitar Hero. It was about the only song she'd play, and she challenged me to it. Anyway, we both ended up 100%-ing it, but she won. The reason? Her part had more notes. Not many, but I think she had one or two more. That was enough for her to win. Also, on certain songs, one part was decidedly easier than the other, giving that person an edge. This time around, they decided to add a truly competitive gametype, which is this Pro Face-off, for people who really want to compete and not just have a fun time and possibly give an advantage to someone else. Like the original Face-off, you can't pick parts. Lead only.

The second dissappointing thing about this game (the first being the ruined PS2 controller controls) is that there is only one bass guitar to pick. Everyone plays the same bass guitar, 'cept for the Grim Ripper. He, same as his normal guitar, only plays the Scythe.

How fun is the multiplayer on this, and how accessible is it? I was thinking of picking it up w. the extra guitar to keep the relatives busy during the holidays. My aunt usually chips in on some gimmicky rhythm game to keep the relatives from verbally tearing each other apart or just staring at each other. we've done Karaoke Revolution and Donkey Konga in the past and I was thinking we might have a guitar hero Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It really does make a difference to have an interesting distraction when you have a tiny house jampacked full of people with little in common that are expected to interact with each other for several days in a row. Its even worse if theres alot of snow out preventing them from mingling outside the confines of the four walls....
I can post pics, Thief.
Ok, so, uh...why haven't you yet? :)

Anyway, wow, you burned through Expert pretty fast! And here I thought I was decent...still, from what I've seen, it's only those last tier songs that will probably trip me up on Expert. Even Laid to Rest doesn't look too hard (looks fun, though!).

You can choose which instrument you play in Co-op, instead of having to stand on the right/left side? Excellent!

I finally beat No One Knows on Hard today in GH1...and then blew through the first 24 songs on Expert (Crossroads leveled me instantly). Maybe I'm somewhat ready for this one after all.

Yup, Crossroads is where I got stuck, too. It's great when you get the hang of it, though. My favorite song to play nowadays.

Sorry about the image quality. If you know anything about my setup, I have my TV connected through S-Video while having the Gamebridge going through composite, hence the not great clarity.

No fapping!

EDIT: I'm in the chatroom if you guys are interested. Seeing as I have everything, you can pretty much ask for anything and I'll try it.
So where are you guys getting the demo? Can you only get it in the OPM magazine?
OPM has four songs in the demo, while there's another that has 10 songs and can apparently be hacked to get many more (some not even in the final build). Where that other one can be found, I don't know, but I'm sure the others who actually have it can enlighten you.

You can either download the 10-song demo or (doubtfully) get it from a store employee, from a store who has the demo. I actually asked at EB, and they said they only have one per store, and someone at Best Buy said he took one home, implying there was more than one there. I doubt you'd be able to legitimately get one, so I'd just wait a few days or download it.

Boner. BOIOIOIOING.

oh wow, thank god for progressive scan and widescreen mode. It makes guitar hero 2 looks leaps and bounds better than the first. The first one, the graphics were more distracting than helpful. In Guitar hero 2 they provide sort of a great ambiance to the game.

Granted graphics don't make much difference in this sort of game, but it's a very nice touch for HDTVs

Beat all the main songs on expert today except for Free Bird. It's ridiculous. I think it may take me a little while to beat it. I've been playing with my friends for like 7 hours straight. The designs on the wall are dripping downward. I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight. This game has improved on the original in every way. You must pick this game up if you have a ps2.

I still prefer guitar Freak's method of showing notes though, it's far less convoluted.

...

I just played Trogdor
The House was Rocked
I got a Boner
Jesus saved the world

There's a few bonus songs I'm having trouble with. I finally beat the Shadows Fall song... somehow. I think there's three I haven't beat. Some of them are super easy, others are impossible.

The new Made in Mexico song (Yes We Can) is even worse than their song in the first game. It's so repetitive, easy, and LOOOOOOONG. Good thing I five-starred it though, because I will never ever play it again. On Expert.

I'll get through the other difficulties in my car (with the PS2 controller) this week. You see, it's still playable, but it's 1000% harder. Easier difficulties, however, should be manageable.

Finally 5-starred Infected on Hard!!! Yippee!!

EDIT: Ha! I just watched the IGN Video Review, and
Your drummer explodes at the end of Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight.
How fucking cool is that?
