The Official Lair Thread - Update with Analog Control + DLC on April 15

From what I've read only certain parts of the game work on the PSP so there is no way to play beginning to end with analog controls.

But, by all means, let us know.

you were right.

I got the regular PS2 controller to work with the game, while all the flight controls work fine, the game doesn't have an alternate controller scheme for events that require 6axis moviement, like when you destroy a power generator and have to move the controller up and down repeatedly, and I reckon that for event (QTE) that require 6axis movement, then you're screwed. So bascially the game is unplayable without the 6axis. Unless its a pure flight mission with no 6axis QTEs or anything that requies 6axis movement to complete a goal then you can't play it, or finish the mission.
Honestly, though I flew around with the analog stick and I actually missed the 6axis control. Its not perfect but it was definitely more fun then the analog sticks. oh well... that's that.

Famitsu, Japan's leading gaming magazine awarded the game an impressive 34/40, (according to ps3fanboy.com)

so all these reviewers that just over looked the game, didn't even give it a fair chance forget you. I played it, and enjoyed it.. 7.5-7.9 imo... and the controls are great, not absolute perfection, but hey neither is street fighter.. after all these years I still can't do a spinning pile driver with Zangief. Hopefully the game does well in Japan.

Try doing his level 3 super on SF Ex Plus Alpha, my thumb had a blister after 30 minutes and I was only able to execute it once :/

Edit (4/10/08): http://ps3.ign.com/articles/865/865676p1.html

One of the biggest complaints about Factor 5's PlayStation 3 debut title appears to have been addressed. Sony Japan provided first details today on a free update for Lair, and included in the bullet points is the option for analog controls!

The update will also offer the ability to show a targeting icon, and Dual Shock 3 rumble support.

Sony is making a few additional downloads available for the game as well. Lair owners will be able to download the Wind Dragon and Poison Dragon for use in all stages. All PS3 owners will have access to a couple of themes which can be used to spice up the system's main interface. These downloads will also be free.

The new downloads will arrive in Japan on the 17th, and presumably throughout the world at around the same time.

Without that was the made reason I hated the game. Flying the dragon with the ps3 six axis which really sucks. Don't understand why they ever even made that feature. I love the ps3 that is the only thing I hate about the controller. Thank god not every game uses it, and it is opitional in some.

Hopefully there will be a patch for analog controls and rumble. Although I thought the game was decent, probably cause I wasn't expecting much.

Have you tried it? Does it make the game any better?
if you use a third party controller, you control it via analog sticks.
It's really not a very good game, and I never experienced many issues with the controls. Could do 180's from the get-go. It's just the rest of the game...

So wait, hold up here a second....this is one of the games that uses the 'innovative motion sensing waggle' on the PS3's controller and people HATE using it? Hmmmmm.....this is fascinating, although I'm sure it MUST be bad to see so many complain about it (and the other obvious problems it must have).

So, what else is wrong with the game? Lots of glitches? It seems like many devs are happy enough to release glitchy games anymore and just 'patch them' after the fact. Of course, last gen some of those glitches erased memory cards and all sorts of good stuff, so let's hope the glitches this gen are minor by comparison.

I liked the game. The epicness of it all was great IMO, and no other game can compare. The controls can be troublesome, but once you get used to them they aren't hard.

Still, analog control would be nice...maybe it would get more people to buy the game.

All games should come with the option for customized controls that let players pick the way they want to control the game. PC games do this. This should be a required mandate from the console manufacturers.

The game was above average is scope, had excellent graphics, and a bland, if not spectacular story (nothing you'd remember, but nothing that ruins the game).

The controls KILLED what should otherwise be a "should own" (not a "must own") game. Holy crap they're every bit as bad as what people say. Sixaxis has its good moments, IMO (fl0w, Heavenly Sword) - but forcing gamers to use it is clearly not a good option. I wonder if roland13x has answered the # of copies this game sold in his NPD thread?

April 17th... lol After all this time, they could have at least came out with some more mission packs or something. Some extra story chapters, get people interest in the game.
As soon as this game gets a price drop, I'm going to have to pick it up.
It already has dropped quite a bit.
Especially Target.
I hear next year they're releasing a patch that adds a story and characters worth a damn.
Epic post.

Yeah Target has it for $29.98, but I was really interested in this game before it came out and then when it came out people said it was terrible (mainly due to the SIXAXIS controls). But with the new analog controls coming up, is it really worth getting for $30? wondering if I should get it or not, any people have it that can give me some advice with this situation.

I wonder why it has taken so long...the rumors have been around forever, so many folks have reportedly playtested the patch that renders this game playable...I wonder why they have been fahting around. Is it asking too much that this will be a free download.

I'm not sure what they can do about framerates. It really depends on how much time they had and what they're willing to do.

I do know that the game actually did well in Japan, which is likely why they're seeing the patch tested there first.

Lair is an older title, as such it might not make the best use of the SPUs, thus if they can optimize it further with all the stuff they know now about programming for SPUs, they could get the framerate up quite a bit.

I highly doubt that would be included in the patch. That is a fundamental change of the engine which is a lot of work. But hey, I hope I'm wrong.

IGN has a preview of the patch.

... The pack doesn't fix the cornucopia of other problems I have with Lair -- a worthless directional arrow, terrible lock-on system, lame dragon fights, etc. -- that Greg Miller haters always seem to ignore, but it definitely enhances the experience and should be picked up by folks who have held onto the title. The patch goes live on Thursday, April 17 and can be downloaded through the PSN or through a Lair update when you put the disc in -- although the in-game update doesn't come with the dragons.

why did everyone hate Lair? i love it! the sixaxis controls we're GODLY! and making sound effects was just plain awesome! i guess some people don't have skillz....

The patch went up with the release of firmware 2.30 and the new PSN store. I downloaded it this morning (didn't get a chance to try it).
He did, 143k
Now 143k and 1! :D

I wish I could invert the controls. Oh well. I like the game, I just fly up into the sun sometimes.

thanks, for saying that. saved me from buying it and being very frustrated. I just can't play a game without inverted controls!

You can get this game at Target or Super target for $15. Still not worth $15 on my book. They should made the game w/o support sixaxis control.

WTF they added analog controls but don't allow you to invert them? GEEZE gimmie a break. What's default then? Is up up and down down, or is it down up and up down?

I tried finding it as well, and it's still $60 at my Target

$15 is barely lunch, so I can pass up a meal for a new game.

I feel bad for the developers. Everyone ripped on them and said their game sucks because the controls were terrible and they fix it and people still say it sucks.

Man, being a game developer and having to deal with the internet community must be annoying. It seems like everyone on the Internet gets really angry when someone releases a game that isnt 9/10 or higher.

Up is down on the left analog and Down is up on the right analog from what I've heard. So...default Star Fox controls.
