The Official PC Topic for TES IV: Oblivion

Ok CC, heres one thats a full screenshot with minimum compression. Granted, its still 1/5th the size. Boobies ahoy.

so which oblivions have people tried? which would you recommend?

I only have BTmod and colored maps mod. They both seem pretty good so far.

I use BTmod and colored map as well, they're the most useful without being gmae changing. I also use no psychic guards, the way I see it, if I kill someone and no one can see it, why should a guard come arrest me.
I also use a simple smaller crosshair mod, the default crosshair is so big, I wish I could turn it off, but still retain the other icons (open door, open crate, pick that up) that way I know if its illegal for me to do what I'm about to do.

Oh that reminds me of a recent annoying thing.

I was doing the quest where you go into the gate with the Bruma guards and their captain. Apparently one of the guards was about dead and I had an errant swing at enemy that had fallen right before I hit attack. Well I killed him accidently. The captain was the only one that survived and he was thanking me profusely for helping him with the gate. Well, I get arrested once I get inside Bruma. That's so retarded.

Dammit this game runs like crap on my PC

3.2Ghz P4
Geforce 6800 OC w/ extra pipelines unlocked
1GB Ram....

maybe I just need a new video card? But then upgrade goes the whole system for PCI express =/

Any settings that will prob help? i'm running it @ 1280x720 and w/ HDR. I tried bloom instead of HDR but it didnt seem to help that much.

I can top that. I went on a mission to clear a cave of vampires. I killed them all and went back to town. I was arrested for two murders.

And then, someone was kidnapped so I went to the town where she was. (remote shit hole) I found her and the villagers all attacked me at once. I killed them all right propper. I get back to the city and return the daughter. As I'm walking out of their house a guard bursts in and arrests me AGAIN for murder. Side note on this quest. There are like 3-5 named townspeople in this village. When you're trying to get the girl out of the town they attack you on sight. So i stealth killed them all first. However, the game arbitrarily spawns a generic villager when you kill them. I killed the first two people near the girl and as I killed the last she was attacked by 2 other guys that came from no where. I reloaded and tried to change my tactics and they fucking spawned behind me... very cheep.

That quest is awesome... I killed everyone except two people (the ones who just ran and didn't attack me) and never had any sort of penalities. I also whooped everyones ass easily.

Oh... then I guess I 'murdered' the two people that were going to run from me... They shouldn't have had their weapons drawn asking where I was then.

Only two people who never wanted to fight where the inn keeper and the general goods lady... also the
guy who offers to help you out
never wanted to fight.

Its funny how he goes hostile and forgets you after the events are over.

I slaughtered everyone in the town square. It was fun. I wished the Darkbrotherhood had more missions. I enjoyed killing people... now my wrath is turned upon the towns folk. I've killed every soul in Cheydinhal 3 or 4 times now.

lol, did you follow the quest line for it? It's actually kind of messed up what the people were doing, and I'm really sad the game never elaborated on it further then they did... it had a lot of potential.

Adding more ram would help.
Adding one or two gigs would work wonders

Turn your resolution down to 1024x768, and turn some of the other settings I'd imagine you have cranked down or off. I'm running with similar specs (Pent D 3.0Ghz, GeForce 6800, 1GB Ram) and a few tweaks just fine. The CoolBits registry hack where you turn down extra frames rendered from 3 to 0 also seems to add a good amount of FPS if you haven't added that yet.

Thanks for 'extra frame rendering' tip, Genocidal, my computer ran this game fine, but there are a few locations that just bogged waaaay down, for no apparent reason (the pirate ship at the imperial city waterfront, for one) and that seemed to have taken alot of the load off.

:hot: O_O o_O! @_@!!!!!

Theres a quest where I get to kill the whole village!?

I'm running at 1680x1050. Indoors I get 50-100fps and outdoors I get 10-40 FPS.

Grass taking grass off raises it ~18FPS.

Shadow complexity has little to no effect on look, but it costs a few FPS on high, so set it low.

Draw distance on tress doesn't make them pop up out of nowhere. What it does do is affects the distance at which a more detailed texture is put on the tree model. If you set it at about 50% trees about 50-60 feet away will go from dark brown mucky things to lighter brown, normal-mapped bark trees. Going between 0-100 i noticed little impact on FPS

Turning on LOD will cost you 10-15 FPS, but really, it looks so drab without it.

I found turning on water reflection will cost you 5 FPS in the middle of a forest... turn it off if you don't spend much time near water/care how it looks.

Self shadows didn't seem to have much affect on FPS, but they really only detract from the look anyways. They tend to just make the whole model really dark or the shadows don't feel like they're in the right place.

Specular distance... no clue what the hell it does nor does it seem to impact FPS.

Character draw distance seems to have little effect on FPS and at max can let you see enemies about 100 yards away.

Object draw affects how far away things like rock formations and tombstones appear. Maxing it costs about 3-4 FPS, but I think its worth it to avoid popups.

Item draw doesn't really need to be that far. You can't really see items from far aways anyways, even if you could, you couldn't pick them up. But eitherway, it doesn't seem to affect FPS much.

Canopy shadows will cost you a couple FPS, if you're watching a slideshow, turn them off. It essentailly just draws shadows on the ground from the tree tops.

Shadows on grass is probably what it says. I didn't even think about enabling it because grass is cripling enough without realtime dynamic shadowing.

Theres some of the big things I can think of.

Care to give a bit more info? I googled CoolBits and most of the hits were 3 years old.

Shamelessly copied from the Oblivion Settings Guide

NVIDIA card Coolbits tweak

This is one of the greatest driver tweaks I have ever seen. At first, I couldn't believe my results.
But the benchmarks don't lie; I nearly doubled my framerates after applying this tweak. There is no
noticeable drop in quality and no apparent side effects. I encourage everyone to apply this tweak.
It really is pretty unbelievable. Steps:

1. Download and install the latest NVIDIA ForceWare drivers.
2. Download and install the "Coolbits" registry tweak:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815
(To install, unzip then double-click the .reg file to apply the registry mod)
3. Go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab -> Advanced -> GeForce XXXX (your card model)
4. Expand "Performance & Quality Settings"
5. Click on "Additional Direct3D Settings"
6. Change "Max Frames to render ahead" from 3 to 0.
7. Click "Apply" then "OK" to exit the settings page.

Start Oblivion and note the huge, huge difference in input responsiveness and framerate consistency.
Please note that I have heard that 7xxx card users have not been seeing much improvement from this
tweak. It may only relate to 6xxx series cards and below.

No... quest goes like this -

You find it this girl is kidnapped, she went to Hackdirt to deliver some goods. You go there, find her horse, no one wants to talk about her... except one guy. He tells you how outsides burned their town, he hates them as much as everyone else, but that he dosen't agree with sacrificing an innocent girl to the Deep Ones. You can find the Deep Ones bible in the church, some kind of freaky religion. The dude gives you a key to go underground to the caverns, you fight the brethern plus the townspeople, find the girl and that's it. You never meet the Deep Ones, the quest never goes any further, it really sucks.

Wow...Oblivion looks awesome now on an X1600 Pro. Wow does that make a world of difference. All that's left is to find a way to make it run faster, as I still only get like 20-25 FPS everywhere. But it looks amazing and it's playable at this point, so I'm happy.

Hmm... i skipped the whole 'talk to people like I care' part. I found a trap door and killed everyone in it. Then I came out and killed everyone topside.

Ok, so what's the deal with stealing? I break into someone's shop, expecting to find that awesome weapon or piece of armor they want to sell me for 6500 gold, but instead the shops are just full of leather, iron, and steel garbage.

When do I start getting more powerful weapons, as well? Kind of sucks I just can't find them in a shop.

[quote name='Kayden']You bastard!

I spent like 6 hours on that site tweaking my pc.[/quote]

I use the XPTC guide on there every time I reformat. Lots of nice tweaks, helps quite a bit.

Now, back to Oblivion.

[quote name='Roufuss'] When do I start getting more powerful weapons, as well? Kind of sucks I just can't find them in a shop.[/quote]

I got most of my stuff off of bandits, mauraders and rogues. They attack you on roads and some ruins. I killed a couple and got some daedric armor off of them. Is there anything better?

Okay, I wanna hear what you guys have done for fun that is part of the regular gameplay. For instance, I collected several hunderd (600ish) bottles of different alcohols and dumped them on the floor of my shack house on the waterfront. I then proceeded to fire ball them to see the physics effect. Well as cool as it is it causes so much lag, rendering a couple hundred bottles flying and calculating the phyics strains my computer quite a bit.

I also dump stuff the roofs on the water front. Such as cups and plates. Also, in one town I was able to jump on the roofs and jump on the town wall and then jump out with out using a door, it messes up bad. It shows nothing but the foliage. The ground is invisible even though you can walk on it. You can move around and it moves you on the map and you can discover places as well. But you will see nothing and feel nothing but foliage. You could potentially use this method to safley discover everything but I think that ruins half the fun as all you see are trees and shrubs.

Theres a glitch in the the game where if you draw your bow, go to your journal, unequip your arrows and then try and drop an item it drops as many of that item as you have arrows. I used it to drop 1000 sigil stones. It crashed my game hard... I also did it with a stack of different arrows and it was hysterical. It made the snake of arrows that thrashed around my house exploding everywhere. Then I went to a merchants and dropped about 500 tower sheilds. The filled a room about 4 feet deep and then poured out the door and down the stairs.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ZOMG I NEED TO TRY THIS IT SOUNDS AMAZING!!!

And to think I was gonna wander around and gather items to trash up my other houses. Thank you!!!!

[quote name='CorporalJackson']how do you kill the last guy at the manor? he is immortal[/quote]

Well by the time I decided to kill him I had mostly daedric armor and I had a daedric longsword. It wasn't too bad.

Free horse armor code:

OB23518477981

the people at gamestop gave me one for no reason

Ok... I got a free DL, verified it and installed it.

Its just like any other .esp Oblivion mod. (I think...)

So here seems to be the three main files...

http://www.filefactory.com/?c66986

Extract them to (probably...)
C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data

The start the game with the launcher and click on data files. DLC horse armor should be in there, make sure its active and you should be set (hopefully...).

how well will this run on my system? i'm a pc gaming newb, i just recently got a new computer. my old one had problems running baldurs gate 2 if that gives you any idea how old it was. the biggest thing i'm concerned with is the graphics card. i know it's not a high end one, i don't know if it's even a mid range one, but it's all i got. after having my new comp for only 3 days, i doubt the wife would be too keen on my buying a new card for it. anyway, here's what i got:
pentium 4 3.0ghz w/ht
1 gig ram
256 mb nvidia geforce 7300 le

i went to srtest.com and it said i met both the min and recomended specs, but that doesn't tell how well it will run.

I think that would run fine.

I have a Athlon 3200+, 1 GB ram and 128MB Geforce 6800 and I can run it on medium-low settings. The memory leak does require me to restart the game after an hour or 2.

Since I haven't tried the download since you changed the link, no, and I can't say if this one's broken as well either... sorta missed the edit. FileFactory seems to not want to load right now though.

Ok, this seems to work just fine. Quest got activated, but since I was about to go close the great gate outside of Bruma, I didn't rush over to the stable and complete it. FileFactory is slow as fuck though.

I haven't changed the link... What do you mean broken? Are you saying you couldn't even download it?

is this your own version of the horse mod or is this the official mod that Bethesda released? What all is in it?

Oh... yea. I posted a link for their direct dl from their site that has an installer and a verifier and some other BS.

Then I installed it myself and found the proper files and re bundled them. So they do work then?

[quote name='Genocidal']The original link that was up there, which pointed to obliviondownloads.com, sometime yesterday. Although it took a while to grab, this one downloaded and worked just fine.

Sweeeet. Kayden 1: The Man 0

Anyone know where the crazed fan goes when you tell him to go away when you're the grand champion? I want him and my Dark Brotherhood guy following me around in game now.

Wow do I love this game now that it runs properly. Definitely spent a good couple hours playing it yesterday, avoiding the main quest and leveling up and such. So much fun.
