The Official PC Topic for TES IV: Oblivion
Wow do I love this game now that it runs properly. Definitely spent a good couple hours playing it yesterday, avoiding the main quest and leveling up and such. So much fun.
How did you manage to get it up and running?
How did you manage to get it up and running?
I actually ended up buying a new video card, an x1600 Pro, and that made a world of difference. I get like 25 fps outside and 30 indoors, which is smooth enough for me.
It shows 9 people downloaded the horse pack from me, who all did and how's it working?
I downloaded it off you Kayden and the game definitely accepted it as the real thing, but I need to get a horse first to get the armor put on it. As soon as I get one, I'll let you know if it actually worked. I'm fairly sure it's fine since it did tell me about the quest when I started the game up.
It shows 9 people downloaded the horse pack from me, who all did and how's it working?
I downloaded it and seems to be working fine. The game froze for a 10 seconds or a so a couple times after I installed the mod but who knows if that was related to the horse armor pack or just a game freeze. Also had my first crash to desktop today.

I bought a nice black horse for 5 grand before I got the armor. I'm not sure I really like the look of the steel armor though. The back side (which is what we see most of the time) is very plain looking.

I can't wait til they fix the memory leak. I start the game with just a little lag in the busy areas but after an hour it becomes unplayable until I restart the game. I also found a glitch by the east gate at Cherodil (spelling?). I exited the city's east gate and fell through the bridge into the ditch.

 5k for a damn horse?

I got both of mine for free and all I had to do was kill people!

Glad it works for you guys.

I can play the game for like 10 hours with no problems. However, if I put my PC in standby and then start oblivion again it'll randomly crash when I try and save or load.

I'm a nice guy so I can't steal a horse lol. Although I got in trouble for getting on the Weynon Priory horse that thye gave me. Darn glitch.

My first horse was a painted one for $500 but I didn't want to get armor for it since it wasn't going to be my main horse for the long haul. I found a place that sold white horses for $4,000 but they said they were only the 2nd fastest horse and I want the best damn horse in all the land :). So found the black ones for $5000 and apparently they're the best you can get, at least for speed.

Maybe I'm having issues after just an hour because my PC barely meets recommended requirements. Definitely notice a gradual slowdown the longer I play though.

I just got Oblivion 2 days ago.

It runs fairly smoothly on my comp, although the settings are lower than I'd like.
My load times are always < 10 sec though, thanks to my 2.5 gb of RAM.

My character is a High Elf, born under the Thief, and is a Nightblade.
I cant wait to get farther in, this game is going to take quite a bit of my time from now on...

Tell me what I need to unzip a RAR and I'll get it from you as well.

I'm thinking of upgrading my video card.

My system specs are:
Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz HT
2.5 Gb RAM (2 gb of which are Corsair) ^_^
128 Mb ATI Radeon x300/x550 series

the graphics card is the only weak link in my system.
Would this card be a good buy?

Not bad, and pretty cheap actually.

However, at this point, I personally wouldn't go anything less than the 7XXX series, as the 6XXX series is virtually out of date now/will be soon.

yeah, but I want to hold out for next year for when I upgrade to Vista and a DirectX 10 card.

Looking at the reviews, people have had great succes playing Oblivion with this,
anyone here playing with a 6800?

I'm playing with a 6800 but on low settings. I only have 1 GB of memory as well so that's probably a big part of it.

Really?

I play on my 6600 GT w/ 1 GB of RAM on really decent settings. Then again is it overclocked, so... meh. :/

I have my card overclocked a little bit. I don't have it on the lowest settings but close to low. I have the resolution at 720x576 but showing distant landscape. It runs smoothly for a while until a leak starts bogging it down.
You mean the game has a setting lower than Ultra High @ 1680x1050? :whistle2:k

:p
damn kayden, what are your system specs?

Scroll up and then try to cyberpunch kayden but end up breaking your monitor like me.
Scroll up and then try to cyberpunch kayden but end up breaking your monitor like me.

The sad thing is that mine is still like 1k from being totally hardcorerest.

I play on just high at 1280X1024 but bumping it up to all settings on max does not do much. Anything higher than high looks pretty much the same, the difference is pretty hard to notice.
where can I enchant (spelling is wrong lol) my sword?
In the Arcane Academy. Join the mages guild then just go to the Academy and it is in one the buildings. It is a shiny gold stand.

I just ordered the graphics card I posted above, I cant wait for it to arrive.

btw, WHERE CAN I FIND LOCKPICKS???
I cant join the dark brotherhood or complete 2 mages guild recommendation quests without them.
And joining the thieves guild would be useless without them, so I'm holding off on that as well.
This is driving me crazy:bomb:

If you join the Thieves Guild, the fences sell them. There's also a guy outside the walls of the Imperial City that sells them, I think his name is Shady Sam.

Just join the thieves guild. You can buy some before you really even join. When you are about to do the quest to get into the guild you can buy tons of lockpicks and when you are in the guild you can buy them as well. Just get a beggar to like you then ask about the Gray Fox. You will be given some information and then you will talk to a guy who gives you the quest to join and sells tons of lockpicks.

Also, there is a quest for a daedric shrine that gives you a skeleton key. A lockpick that can be reused.

thanks for the tips guys,
but I just said fuck it and went and bought an Open Average Lock spell which served my purposes for the time being
do you guys know where I might buy a open very hard lock spell?
the guy I know of in Cheydinhal only sells up to Hard.
AFAIK you have to make it yourself. You need an Alteration of 100 to cast it though.
o_0 you can make spells yourself?
how would I go about this?

You have to be able to access the Arcane University, then go in the Praxatorium or something similarly named. You can only make spells with an ability that you already know and are able to cast, however.

Example: The only spell you know is Weak Fireball. The only effect you will be able to use to make a spell is Fire Damage.

alright, thanks, I'm already almost done getting recommendations. I'll check that out as soon as I'm done.
and while I'm in the imperial city, I'll carry out my contract for the dark brotherhood

You don't need recommendations to make spells/enchants. You can just sneak into the Arch mage's room and he has an altar for both.

Don't listen to Kayden, he's one of those "bad guys". Just ask him how many innocent people he's killed...

But yea, I guess you could sneak in to the Archmage's room, if that's your thing.

Innocent? They were all guilty... of not getting out of the way of my sword!

I wouldn't be surprised if my murders were near the tripple digits. I only got caught for 3 of them, none of which were really my fault. Twice it was a bug were I got in trouble for killing people that attacked me and then once it was from killing the guy with the magic arrow. I shot him in the dark, in bushes from 200 yards away while the guard wasn't looking and I still got in trouble. Just a bug in the game >_

I wish some enchanted swords didn't have finite uses to them....sure you can get them recharged, but its just a hassle if you're not a mage.

Am I missing something?

I don't use many of the Mods. I like the little additions but I generally want to keep the game in its original state while I'm playing. But I must say, the Saddle Bag Mod ROCKS.

It's realistic, not to overpowering, really useful, and helps the game.

Looked through gamefaqs. Pretty useless at this point.
Here's the thing:
Character is level 7, and I have attempted to do the "close the oblivion door" dealio in Kvatch several times. Every time I get to the blood tower/phallus of fear/whatever, I get my a** handed to me by two dark knight-types in a hallway. Now, I know the enemies are supposed to scale to your level, but apparently they don't scale all the way down to "retard."
So, is there a certain level one's character should actually be at before attempting this quest? Or should I just spend my time gathering clover berries and stinkwort instead?

Try scaling the difficulty down a few notches. I know I got my ass handed to me a few times when I went into my first Oblivion gate. If you don't want to do that though, go ahead and level up to a point where your main skills make most other encounters a breeze -- may be different depending on your skill set. Also, if you just raise the skills without actually raising your level, I'm farily sure that the enemies stay scaled to your current level and not your actual level.

Cast a Soul Trap spell on an enemy and kill it while the spell is still active.

In other news, the Orrery quest is now available for $1.89.

so I got my 6800xt on Friday (newegg took their damn time), but...I of course neglected to get a new power supply for it...I'm heading out to Fry's tomorrow to grab on.

Oh snap! I just beat the story and I have beaten what I think to be about 60 percent of the quests. Now I got more! Weee!
Morrowind had all kinds of mods.. some added more extensive crafting to the game, others added random npc generation(and traveling npcs) to make the world seem less static.

Still other mods allowed for fillable bottles and containers, some gave the npcs daily schedules (something that they lacked originally.. they just kinda milled around regardless of the time of day), one mod called "better bodies" replaced the character models in the game with better looking ones, and several people made better bodies compatible clothing mods.

Still other mods re-textured the entire game with higher resolution textures and a whole bunch of other tweaks and improvements. Some mods even fixed spelling errors and typos left in conversation dialogues and in some of the world's books.

Here's a list of just some of the mods made for Morrowind..

Woah, didn't know that Thanks for that info. Sweet I should reinstall it.

hey guys, just got a new 6800gs so I can finally play this game.

I read most of the begining of the thread..but didn't keep up as I haven't really played it yet.

Do you guys recommend any must have mods or add ons that are out there now?
Especially ones that improve playability, user interface and such.

Thanks!
