The Official PlayStation Vita Thread - 11/4: FW 3.00 Coming Just in Time for the PS4 Launch!
Does anybody know if the vita will be import friendly? I have a bad feeling they will not make a US release of DJMax Technika Vita :(.
Vita will be region free, just like PS3.

Famitsu is reporting that many vita games will not even boot up unless they detect a memory card inserted. Its amazing that Sony took my hype for the Vita from the first system I was ever going to buy day 1 to....meh ill pick it up when it price drops...and all over a stupid memory card.

I have read that the vita will not support flash support or game archives at launch. I hope it isn't true though
I have read that the vita will not support flash support or game archives at launch. I hope it isn't true though
Looks like memory cards are not optional either. Some games won't even boot up if you don't have one.

This is getting too expensive for me. :whistle2:#

Who wasn't going to get a memory card?
Were you going to play Uncharted (or other) without saving?

It does suck for people who were going to just 'test' the games out as I did when I got a PSX with no memory card for the first couple of weeks.

Sony is dumb though, this is only going to create confusion for the average consumer.
Should have just made all games save to memory cards. Or at least include a small one for saves.

As for no Flash, who cares. It supports HTML5. Good riddance!
The Chinese market will have knockoffs by the time launches it NA. Just watch places like deal extreme, etc.
I'm hoping for this as well. Or micro SD adapters.

Playing devils advocate here, I was really pissed off during the age of memory cards for the ps1/2 because they never came in any size but 8mb or whatever the blocks translated to for ps1. I have like 9 ps2 memory cards and 4 ps1 ones, mostly because I never delete save files. At least this time we have a choice in how we get swindled.

only problem is any knockoff won't have magicgate, which could make it useless.

I just hope we could play psone classics. There reports saying it wont have it at launch but might support it later on

Get Your Hands on PS Vita Early with the First Edition Bundle
Should have made it Uncharted. Then again, those willing to pay at least a $20 premium over what I estimate the game plus memory card would add to the cost of the Vita are dumb enough to not get it with the game they really want and buy Uncharted full price anyway.

It's weird that they've taken a 180 on this issue since they were saying that you'd be able to save and store DLC on the cards at E3.

Has there been any explanation as to why? Is it because those games are too big to allow for that extra space for saves/DLC and thus need a card for that stuff?

The early bundle at least seems like a better value than the launch PSP bundle, which was all fluff. Though only offering the 3G version early is kind of dumb.

Because they are Sony and this is what Sony does. They come up with a product that looks amazing and then they find one silly small stupid little thing that makes their product a harder sell.
I'm looking for an actual explanation. It doesn't make any sense, but no site seems to be trying to get any answers as to why.
They likely said what they did before they actually thought about it and either discovered a technical issue or a money issue.

Magic Gate was used in PS2 mem cards, and in all mem-sticks. Yet there were knockoffs all over for those products.

Hardware encryption. Likely encrypted at content level too. Just one more hoop for hackers I guess. Having to fake out the h/w encryption with _slightly_ increase cost of knockoffs, making them less attractive as well I suppose.

Prevents cheating on trophies, and sharing DLC.

MLB 12: The Show will be coming to Vita and should be a mostly equal experience. Hopefully they allow you to import franchise/RTTS saves into the Vita version, as they kind of maybe hint at something like that in the post.

This would be a HUGE winner for me. Hopefully they will add it because it would be a great feature.
Pretty big announcement from Sony Japan regarding UMD compatibility and the Vita: http://andriasang.com/comyxo/

By registering a UMD via PS3 or PC program, you can get a downloadable version of the PSP game for a reduced price. Hopefully Sony America will follow-up soon.
Very interesting. While expecting free PSN copies for your UMDs would have been much better, getting a 75% discount (we can hope) isn't too bad. Plus, I guess you could resell your used UMDs and let someone else do the same thing, so I can understand that there would be some sort of fee.

I think its BS. The Japanese prices are $7-$13ish right now. I can understand a buck or two charge but Christ $7...you can get many PSP games used for that price. Hell a few bucks more and you can get new copies. Hopefully Sony greatly reduces the prices when this comes to the US, if not its just another example of Sony taking a great concept and pissing on it with pricing.

Sony doesn't owe anyone anything for digital versions of UMD games.
I'm surprised they're even doing this.

I don't think this will even come to the US, but I want to be wrong.

The UMD Passport program is a PSP app that lets you register your UMD games to your account so that when you get a Vita, they will be discounted in the PS Store. The PS3 and PC are not mentioned anywhere with this program.

It seems like a pretty good solution to this complex problem of how to let people move some of their UMD collection to a digital format for UMD-less systems.

The pricing seems reasonable enough for Japanese releases that have no standardization at all, though it seems like the discounts are very big for what's on the list. To give you an idea why the pricing isn't a sign of anything, Dirt 2 is about $65 on the Japanese PS Store and is discounted to $13 with this program, but it's $30 on the US PS Store. I'd guess that if this is done for NA that the 500 yen to 1000 yen prices will translate to $5 to $10 based on how they're priced in our PS Store beforehand.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/11/sony-shows-off-vitas-content-sharing-application/

Vita will have better ways to manage your saves, games, and media with an app that lets you send that content to the PS3 and PC to back it up, which probably means that Media Go will also support Vita when that comes out.

When you buy a piece of media, you bought the media only on that medium (CD, DVD, VHS, whatever). The Fair Use clause gets a bit tricky when you think about ripping media to your personal computer (like MP3s). But you can't just go to a store and say, "Hey, I have this movie on DVD so give me the Blu-ray version."

No company gave you a discount when moving from VHS --> DVD --> Blu-Ray. The Vita was never designed to play UMDs. I could understand the rage if the Vita had a UMD player AND THEN Sony said you had to pay again.

At least PSN purchases are good across the PS3 and Vita line, so long as you activate/deactive across the allowed number of systems.

If the UMD Passport program came to the US, couldn't you just go to gamestop, buy a UMD used, then register it and return the game after? I don't know, it just seems like the discounts could be abused.
If the UMD Passport program came to the US, couldn't you just go to gamestop, buy a UMD used, then register it and return the game after? I don't know, it just seems like the discounts could be abused.
That's why they won't be free...and the cost for each game will vary. For most people that already have the umd, they end up paying more. And for those that don't have the UMD but borrow it to get the PSN version, they still end up paying money they probably wouldn't have otherwise.
If the UMD Passport program came to the US, couldn't you just go to gamestop, buy a UMD used, then register it and return the game after? I don't know, it just seems like the discounts could be abused.
The only people that gets played in that situation is GameStop. Sony and the publisher gets a digital sale since you still have to buy the game to get anything out of that registration.

I think the UMD Passport is absurd. Totally understand the point of owning physical media over digital rights, but it is shit like this that fuels piracy. As the consumer with the UMD I should have the right to do what I want in relation to how I personally use my media. For one price I should be able to convert it to other formats for my personal use. As for the individual cost it should be one flat fee per UMD and not a range from $6-20. Fanboyism fuels these ranged prices. Also UMD passport should be free to use and not have a fee associated with it. SONY will already be nickle and diming you with $6-20 conversion fees. I was for this program when I first heard about it, but when I saw the pricing I immediately thought I'll keep my 3 UMD capable PSP's. Look forward to this pissing off the hackers who fucked SONY/PSN a few months ago.

The anger of many consumers has nothing to do with feeling "entitled" to a free copy of something they already purchased. It has everything to do with feeling nickle and dimed. For me personally it also has to do with being sick of wanting Sony to succeed and watching them fail because of idiotic pricing.

Yes if you go out and buy a DVD you have to turn around and buy the Blu Ray if you want the upgrade. Difference with gaming is 1. The digital copy is not an upgrade, its effectively the exact same game. 2. The creation of the digital copy costs very little in comparison to the release of a completely new medium. It would be incredibly smart for game companies to sell these digital copies of their games at a reasonable price and to let you convert for a reasonable price. As it stands you must essentially with a DISCOUNT pay the same damned price it costs you to get a new game from amazon anyways. A great example that proves how much this is about greed and nickle and diming is what neudog pointed out, that all games dont get the same discount. This is being done because they know they can charge you more for Final Fantasy or Metal Gear.

The argument I am facing with you guys reminds me of the argument I faced a few years ago when arguing Nintendos next handheld system should focus on the digital market and sell full release games for no more then $25. Nintendo went the opposite direction, Apple did what I thought should be done...and Apple ate Nintendos lunch.

Sony can not have a massive success on their hands by charging people $250 for the system, $100 for a reasonable size memory card and then making them pay $10 to convert every last one of their games. Vita topics are the only place I see anyone blowing Sony and saying this is not a reality. No one in this market is going to pay over $400 for a Vita, a reasonably sized memory card and the ability to play 4 or 5 of their PSP games. Meanwhile if Sony had either bit the bullet or cut some of the stupid features(like the back touch screen)out of the PSV, included a built in 32gig(Minimum!)hard drive and charged people $3 to convert games they could have had a big hit.

Edit - And btw id rather have never seen a UMD converter and instead just had to rebuy all my games at a reasonable price(flat $10 fee on all PSP games)then to feel I am being nickle and dimed with a stupid converter. I can deal with the lack of BC and having to rebuy stuff if the price is flat and reasonable for all.

New Bonus Round up on gametrailers discussing Sony this year. They talk about Vita and in the segment they again talk about the above. They said they think that Apple with the cheap games has pretty much ate everyone's lunch, Nintendo is taking a big chunk of the hardcore market and unless Sony can find a way to be more pricing friendly(they suggested a $10 a month play all you want option)then they are simply going to be stuck with the left overs.

When the Vita was announced for $250 people cheered and every since then its been one big long groan after another as they reveal the hidden costs of the system.

Which not nearly as many people hear as the launch price. They shoved the real buck in the right places.

For all you people bitching about the UMD passport, maybe Sony should have just made the Vita not backwards compatible. Then you'd have nothing to bitch about.

The argument that you have the right to convert something into any format you want I feel is valid. You are entitled to that IMHO, and in most countries it is legal to do so. But Sony is not obligated to make the Vita backwards compatible. You are not entitled to play those games on any system ever built. That is like arguing that Nintendo ripped you off because your NES cartidges didn't work in your N64. I mean why don't you start a petition to shut General Electric down because the 4-slice toaster you bought doesn't play your turbo grafx 16 carts.

Backwards compatiblity doesn't just "exist" with the snap of the fingers. It involves R&D, and often extra hardware to make it work. This is their way of recouping some of that cost.

Really, the more I think about it, the biggest mistake they have made, is making the system backwards compatible. It just gives people (read conspiricy theorists) something to bitch about. Just play your UMD's on your PSP, and stick it to the man. There are a few reasons I am going to pick up a Vita, but being able to play PSP games is not one.

A more coherent version of my nerd rage here: http://wp.me/pRd9F-2T

And they're not doing anything to change that.
For one price I should be able to convert it to other formats for my personal use.
Isn't that what they're offering? You register a game and get the option to pay a discount for a digital version to use on PSP or Vita.

There's no logical way that publishers would charge the same price when they're available for a variety of prices on the PS Store. Business, not necessarily good business is what fuels the prices.
Also UMD passport should be free to use and not have a fee associated with it.
It is free to use. I don't know where you heard that it wasn't.

You're hoping that they would get hacked for offering people a cheaper way to get digital versions of their UMDs than just being forced to pay full price?

For comparison's sake:
AKIBA'S TRIP - 1,000 Yen - 3,632 Yen on Amazon
DEAD OR ALIVE Paradise PSP® the BEST - 1,000 Yen - 2,400 Yen on Amazon
Colin McRae: DiRT 2 - 1,000 Yen - 1,849 Yen on Amazon
Ever17 ~ the out of infinity ~ Premium Edition - 500 Yen - 3,380 Yen on Amazon
PATAPON3 - 1,000 Yen - 4,063 Yen on Amazon
Kanon - 1,000 Yen - 4,750 Yen on Amazon

So you're wrong about that assumption that they're as cheap or cheaper on Amazon. The publishers are the ones that set their own discounts with the majority choosing either 500 yen or 1000 yen, so it would be their own foolish business decision to overcharge for their games.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/11/22/introducing-motorstorm-rc-for-psn-and-ps-vita/

Sony's announced two new Vita games from Evolution Studios and Zipper:
I’m delighted to be able to announce – and show a trailer for – MotorStorm RC, Evolution Studios’ upcoming radio controlled off-road racing game for PS Vita and PlayStation Network. It was also announced literally moments ago on stage – so it’s absolutely hot off the press!

You can watch first video of MotorStorm RC in action here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cASfalm5OV4

I’ve been game director to a small, elite team at Evolution Studios for most of the year, creating a simulation of high-speed radio-controlled car racing for PSN download. We’re extremely pleased with how the game is coming together; it’s a perfect combination of classic racing with really modern connectivity features and it’s already bigger than your average download game, with visually stunning renditions of all four MotorStorm worlds (and eight of their vehicle classes). Every aspect of the game comes loaded with endless competition that you can share with friends and rivals worldwide – whether that’s on PS3 or PS Vita, or both – and we’re still packing it full of challenges, race types and features too!

Everyone who has played MotorStorm RC so far says it really gets you hooked, with an addictive, hypnotic core experience – just like the best arcade games. Also like the best arcade games, stages take just moments to load, giving it that ‘just one more go’ quality, especially when you can play at home on PS3 and then continue your progress on the go with Vita.

And it’s still early days! We’ve got a lot more lined up and we’ll share all of it with you as the game comes together, but for now please check out our trailer and some of the killer features in MotorStorm RC!

Off-Road Racing on a New Scale
Conquer the most extreme racing environments in powerful radio-controlled vehicles, with hundreds of uniquely customized models to collect and performance based on 8 distinct racing categories: Buggies, Superminis, Rally Cars, Muscle Cars, Racing Trucks, Supercars, Big Rigs and Monster Trucks!

Four Classic Locations, 16 Unique Tracks
Experience the simultaneous challenge and excitement of racing in the world’s most extreme environments, from the dusty desert mesa’s of Monument Valley, to the dangerous jungles of a Pacific island, to the icy tundra at the Arctic Edge, to the apocalyptic ruins of an urban city.

Settle Rivalries Anytime, Anyplace
Challenge friends and the rest of the world to compete for the fastest times in every event – whether that’s on PS3 or PS Vita, or both.

Share Every Moment
Share every moment with your friends and make new friends via the Pitwall. Keep tabs on their activity – so you always know when there’s a new challenge or a new leader – and you can always stay one step ahead of the competition.

Four-Player Multiplayer on PS3
Settle the score with your friends in person with 4 player split-screen races.

Pay Once, Get Both
It’s the same experience on both PS3 and PS Vita, and picking up the game on PS3 will give you full access to the game on PS Vita (and vice versa) – so if you own both you can carry your progress between the two, and always pick up where you left off.

Players in the US can look forward to the release of Motorstorm RC on the PS3 and PS Vita next spring. We definitely will have more details to share throughout the coming months, so continue to check back here in the PlayStation.Blog!
On behalf of the entire team at Zipper Interactive, I am proud to announce a new shooter, Unit 13, designed from the ground up for the new PlayStation Vita. It’s been very exciting developing a game for the first portable console with precision dual analog sticks, the perfect platform for a fast action, hard-hitting, third-person shooter like Unit 13. In addition, Vita’s front and back touch interface provided a unique and fun way to interact quickly with in-the-world elements of the game.

6384408129_f8e1ba7443_z.jpg

Fast action, on-the-go gameplay was a key goal for the Unit 13 team. The game is designed for players to move quickly into the action, choosing from one of six Operatives with unique abilities to tackle 36 action-packed missions across nine unique locales. Missions come in a variety of sizes and difficulty. Some are smaller bite-sized battles; others are longer, more challenging, multi-objective missions that are a good test for any skilled shooter fan. As you make your way through the variety of missions, you unlock the right to take on the tougher High Value Target (HVT) enemy battles. After completing an HVT mission, you can share them with friends and nearby players through PlayStation Vita’s “NEAR” feature.

6384407435_a4d336d720_z.jpg

6384409775_0efc032cd3_z.jpg

The Zipper team put considerable effort into leveraging Vita’s WIFI and 3G functionality to provide exceptional social gaming and competition with friends and opponents from around the world. Unit 13’s live notification interface, enabled through 3G, keeps players up to date on leaderboard positions, new “Daily Challenge” content, new unlocks, shared High Value Target missions, and challenges from friends as they move past you on the leaderboards.

In Co-op, you can play Unit 13 with a friend all with high quality voice chat enabled through the PlayStation Vita. Coop teams compete for top positions on the global, regional, and friend mission leaderboards.

We’re super excited for all of you to give Unit 13 a try. We believe it’s the perfect portable shooter on the best portable gaming platform, the PlayStation Vita. And it’s available right around Vita launch!
See you on the leaderboards!
I hope the Pay One, Get Both idea is offered more often for the cross-platform games.

GREAT pricing strategy, though I really hope Unit 13 has a proper multiplayer...my primary concern with the PSVita is lack of online gaming/lobbies.

I wonder with both for price of one, can I play on my Vita, and have someone playing on my PS3 at same time? Either way, I will be rewarding companies that use the 2-4-1 pricing.

I'm hoping they let the PS3 stream PS3 games to the Vita. That would make me ejaculate in my undergarments.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/...s-impressive-remote-play-with-killzone-3.aspx
Today during a presentation at the Tokyo Game Show 2011 in Japan, Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida demonstrated the PlayStation Vita’s remarkable ability to remotely play PlayStation 3 games. Mr. Yoshida then proceeded to get his butt kicked by the Helghast in front of a bunch of people.

The PS Vita’s sharp five inch display faithfully showed off the beautiful shooter. The tiny portable generally did a good job of keeping up with the massive explosions and frenzied firefights, but the framerate did suffer a few times. The dual analog sticks of the PS Vita made navigation and shooting look easy. Mr. Yoshida explained that the missing shoulder and analog stick buttons can be compensated for by using the Vita’s rear touch panel. I’m not sure how configuring these controls works or how it feels, but it’s interesting way to address the problem. Whether it was nerves, lack of practice, or a clunky interface, Mr. Yoshida struggled with the game, often firing rounds clear past the enemy and falling to his death.

The remote play feature also works with television programs. It appears that you can stream a show to your PS Vita while someone uses the TV for something else. This functionality reminds me of one of the Wii U’s biggest selling points.

Yoshida said that technology for remote play is in the hands of developers. There’s no telling if all games will be available for remote play, but Killzone 3 certainly is. Let’s cross our fingers that this awesome feature becomes widespread across PS3 games.
