The Official PlayStation Vita Thread - 11/4: FW 3.00 Coming Just in Time for the PS4 Launch!

You could probably get by, but you wouldn't understand some things, so I highly recommend that you do play it. I'm sure it hold up since most of it is listening to them talk :p

And play them in order of release.

If you are going to play all of the games in the series- i'd say don't skip one. It establishes a lot of the characters and themes. The story is already confusing enough as is (2 being the worst of the bunch) so starting there might be offputting. Also- the games do a lot of call backs to the original and you wouldn't fully appreciate them if you skip it. The first one is good, and it's aged pretty well due to it's minimalistic graphic approach (no faces, boxy level designs). There is a remake for the Gamecube that's pretty good- might be able find it cheaper now that Gamestop is trying to offload those discs- but it's not official cannon.I played all of them for the first time when i got my PS3 3 1/2 years ago- 1,2,3, Portable Ops, 4. They all held up very well, although MGS1 has some narrative hiccups (plot scenes kind of repeating from what i remember), and the voice acting (while good) isn't up to par with current games. Still an excellent series.
Just play the MGS Digital Graphic Novel for PSP/Vita instead of MGS1.
I'm not sure "play" is the right word for the MGS DGN, since it is hardly a game in the typical sense, and I say what after having competed the DGN.

Better yet, buy the graphic novel from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600106633/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i02

I believe it's pretty much the same story and graphics used in the MGS DGN.

The DGN isn't a bad thing to have because it does have some entertainment value for a MGS fan, but it was a bit tedious to get through everything.

I've also played through it and it's a neat, entertaining way to experience the story of that game without having to actually play it. I believe it also offers some sort of database to let you learn a bit more about characters and such that you may not be able to get from just a quick playthrough.

The other thing that makes it recommendable is that it's only $7.99 on the PS Store and it works on the Vita, so you save a good $20 off of the book you linked and you get something that's easy to access on the device you're looking to play as much of the series on as possible.

Yeah, for that price it's worth getting MGS DGN. It was a fun way to interactively explore the content from the graphic novel and did have some extras on top of it.

Xseed just announced that they're bringing Ragnarok Odyssey and Orgarhythm to North America later this year.

Ragnarok Odyssey:
XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, today announced that it will release the popular action RPG title Ragnarok Odyssey later this year on PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system in North America. Developed by Grandia and Lunar series veteran studio Game Arts and published by GungHo Online Entertainment in Japan, Ragnarok Odyssey is a new title set in the familiar Ragnarok Online universe. The game was released in Japan in early February to both retail and critical success as it garnered strong sales while earning a Famitsu Gold Award. The publishing agreement with GungHo Online Entertainment gives XSEED Games exclusive publishing rights for Ragnarok Odyssey in North America.

“Ragnarok Odyssey is an amazing game that players have recognized through its position as one of the best-selling PS®Vita titles in Japan,” said Ken Berry, Executive Vice President of XSEED Games. “To be able to offer this game, which has been the most requested title by our fans for some time now, is very rewarding and speaks to the level of quality we are committed to delivering to the players.”

An action-heavy RPG set in the lush landscape of the familiar Ragnarok Online universe, Ragnarok Odyssey is a fast-paced game with a heavy emphasis on melee combat. The game is set in a world where humans and giants are pitted against each other in battle following the death of the world’s ancient gods. Based on Norse Mythology, the world of Ragnarok Odyssey will begin to take form as players advance through the story, with new areas opening up as their journey goes on.

In Ragnarok Odyssey, players will embark on a campaign to take down monsters and giants of massive scale, and characters can chain together massive combo attacks both on the ground and in the air thanks to the game’s extremely versatile combat system. Massive enemies can literally be smacked across the screen, and players can even up their speed and agility at the expense of HP for particularly challenging battles. On top of this, the game promotes cooperative gameplay, supporting up to four players for ad-hoc and online cooperative gameplay.

Characters in Ragnarok Odyssey are fully customizable, and players are given the ability to choose from up to six job classes that can be changed throughout the game for specific quests. As quests are completed, characters can be upgraded to increase their combat effectiveness.

Ragnarok Odyssey was developed by Game Arts and GungHo Online Entertainment, exclusively for PS Vita system. The game will be published by XSEED Games in North America in 2012.

Orgarhythm:
XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, today announced it will publish the highly original music strategy game, Orgarhythm, for the PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system later this year in North America. Developed in Japan by ACQUIRE in conjunction with Neilo, the new studio founded by Takashi Hirai who is best known for his past work on Space Channel 5 and Rez, the title blends music and real-time strategy elements to create a new experience specifically designed for touch-enabled mobile play. Playing as the God of Light, players will battle the forces of the God of Darkness by deploying elemental soldiers for rhythm-based attacks synced to a hypnotic mix of rock, club and tribal music. In the game, rhythm is a weapon and different attacks occur on different beats, making the game’s catchy soundtrack dynamic to user input.

“The powerful blend of rhythm and RTS gameplay in Orgarhythm will bring players a unique new mobile game experience on PS®Vita,” said Ken Berry, Executive Vice President of XSEED Games. “Rhythm is the weapon that will allow the God of Light to triumph over the God of Darkness.”

Rhythm and sound act as the user interface in Orgarhythm, giving players control over their armies. Each unit type is based on one of the three elements of Earth, Water and Fire. Each elemental troop has a “rock, paper, scissors” relationship with the other elements: Water is strong vs. Fire, Fire is strong vs. Earth, and Earth is strong vs. Water. Units are rhythmically deployed with three taps to choose the unit and attack type, then a swipe of the finger across the screen to choose position and formation. Using the same interface mechanic, players can also unleash their divine powers to boost attack, defense and healing or slow down enemy troops.

Four attack types—each type requiring a certain number of beats to use—can be employed strategically in battle. As more units enter the battle, the game music expands with additional musical layers as attacks pulse with the beat.

The game features twelve maps, which never play the same way twice as the game’s AI remembers how a map was previously played and adjusts its attack strategies accordingly. The game’s multiplayer has both versus and co-op two-player modes via online play. In co-op mode, control of the God of Light’s soldiers is shared, and in versus mode one player commands the forces of the God of Darkness—the last god standing wins!

Orgarhythm is expected to ship later this year, exclusively on the PS Vita system. With music being such a key component, aspiring musicians are encouraged to submit their songs for consideration to be selected into future DLC packs, more details of which will be announced at a later time. The game is not yet rated by the ESRB.

Just Add Water posted this picture of Stranger's Wrath running on Vita and from reading their Twitter, we should hear more about its release later this month.

That limited edition vita looks nice, would prefer a silver one to match my PSP 3000.

I'm kind on the fence still on which games to get a Vita for. I know I'll get one more than likely for Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward.

I have a large backlog of PSP games and would like to know how do these games compare to their past equivalents?
PSP titles vs. Vita titles:
Wipeout Pulse vs. Wipeout 2048
Lumines II vs. Lumines vita (forgot the titles of the vita games)
Super Stardust Portable vs. Super Stardust vita
Ridge Racer psp vs. Ridge Racer vita
Me, My, Katamari vs. Katamari vita
Sucks the frame rate is halved on those ports.
Which ports?

I also traded my Unit 13 for Hot Shots Golf. I found myself playing less and less of unit 13 for some reason

The 3D Oddworld games.

And sweet, didn't realize the MGS collection is due June 12. Has a $10 credit offer on Amazon as well.

You can't get Lumines on Vita besides the new game, which is easily the best version since the original on PSP. They have a smarter progression system to help you unlock new skins and avatars and the soundtrack is much more like the original than II.

Super Stardust Delta is a completely new game with retooled mechanics that is a lot of fun to play. Portable is just a port of HD on the PS3, but the PSP emulator gives it new life now with the ability to remap the face button controls to the right stick.

Ridge Racer for PSP is the no-brainer of the bunch, as you get a ton more content and the game is $10 cheaper on the PS Store.

Me & My Katamari is a good game and it should be better with the dual sticks now. Everything I've read about Touch My Katamari says it's also a good game, so you should be fine with either. TMK is only $5 more on PSN, so either is fine.

If you own Wipeout HD & Fury on PS3, 2048 offers cross-platform play with players on both platforms and they'll be offering tracks from HD & Fury as free DLC for 2048 at some point in the future.

Yay, white Vita!
There's also a Miku themed one pictured below.

Yay white? I wanted that at launch... I'll be so annoyed if it comes to the US now...

I 'beat' Unit 13 a few days back... and now I don't know what to do except go for trophies. No one plays online, even a friend who owns it refuses to play it anymore as he tells me he hates the game.
Is that good or bad?
It's more than twice as much as the Virtual Boy sold so at least they're over that hurdle... ;)

They anticipated selling 10 million this fiscal year, so yeah id say less than 2 million so far is a pretty bad start. There are a ton of reasons why Sony hasn't turned a profit in like 4 years, but first off is terrible product launches across the board

Well, they're only 1/4 of the way into the fiscal year with 4th quarter still to go. I'd say 10 million is reasonable given the titles on the horizon.

If they toss in a small price drop with some bundles around holiday season they would likely meet that number fairly easily. Maybe decrease the price of the memory too, but that's just wishful thinking.

As for the white Vita, I wanted one ever since I saw the one they revealed at one of the conventions... Was disappointed when we only got black, but whatever, I'll keep my black one. Not in the market on paying twice for a handheld (unless my Vita breaks.. Knock on wood)

Very true. They need to pick it up though, and PS3 ports are not going to do it. Sony needs great, original content for the Vita.

Gravity Rush. June 12th. Can't wait :D Really, what The Vita needs (IMHO) is a solid western RPG. Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect...that's what will get me to log some major game time with my Vita.

The new PS Blogcast had somebody on from Frima, who makes a bunch of Minis, to announce Zombie Tycoon 2 for PSN on both PS3 and Vita for Q1 2013. It's an RTS with a single-player campaign and one-on-one multiplayer.
Well shit, I would hope not..... they wouldn't release a new firmware update just for one game.
Why would it need a firmware update? The EU versions of many PSP games and Minis have been made playable recently for those with EU accounts, but SCEA has fallen behind in doing the same for NA customers.
May have to pick up some of those $1 games then....
The $1 PixelJunk games? Those aren't even PSP compatible besides Remote Play support. Deluxe is $5 though.

I'm not entirely sure how it works, clearly.

looking at completed auctions on Ebay for Vita's, it seems you can get a bare bones Vita for about $185 shipped. I mean, no games, accessories other than power cable/usb cable and maybe the box.

Kinda amazing to see how cheap they are going for. I bought a Vita for $200, and thought I got an amazing deal, and now they are going for even cheaper. Surprising...
There's no need to get offended by a simple question.
Not offended at all; I genuinely don't understand what governs the compatibility. (Firmware, game update, store config update, etc)

It’s been almost three months since we launched PS Vita here in the U.S. and we’re continuing to find ways to add to your portable entertainment experience. With the recent launch of non-gaming apps such as Paint Park, Treasure Park and Wake Up Club, the PS Vita is an ever-evolving platform that keeps you connected to the content and experiences that are most important to all of you gamers.
What PSP games are you most excited to play on PS Vita?

Partial BC for PSP titles and minis?
No PSOne titles available?

...and what's all this tripe about "in some cases, we’ve also improved playability on Vita"? I don't buy it.

Imagine how degrading it was to have to type up such a lackluster announcement in press release form, feigning excitement and accomplishment all the way.

Yeah, I meant in more in the 'looking around the room b/c I don't know what I'm talking about' sense. :D

Also, that update list sucks. Ugh. The PS Blog post about the PixelJunk sale last week mentioned that PJ Monsters Deluxe would be playable on the Vita today, so I wondered what happened with that.

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw your post in the PS Store thread.

That update is so sad.
And all but two of those games labeled as "available today" already worked when transferred from a PS3.
And no mention of PixelJunk Monsters the game advertised to be ready to play today, what a clusterfuck.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012...next-gen-brain-training-to-ps-vita-this-fall/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6p43iFnZBc

Some of the first details on Smart As:
Launching this fall, Smart As is a social brain-training experience that will put your brain to the test with 20 unique, engaging, tactile and highly interactive puzzle games. This next-gen puzzle game will also enable you to share your stats with players from around the world using a robust set of social and connective features.

Produced by XDev Europe, Smart As takes full advantage of PS Vita’s touchscreens, cameras and Augmented Reality capabilities to deliver Daily Training challenges featuring fun arithmetic, logic, language and observation-based puzzles. Your scores from each puzzle are used to calculate your overall Brain Power and anybody at any skill level can get in on the fun. The more you play, the better your chances are of increasing your Brain Power score and unlocking new puzzle games.

The best part about Smart As is that it’s not just a brain training game; it’s a social experience. Once you’ve earned your daily Brain Power score, you can go online to see how smart you are compared to your friends, people that you’ve met through “near,” players in your city, country, continent and the entire world using the Smart As leaderboards. You can even post your Brain Power scores to Facebook to boast about your cerebral superiority. Using PS Vita’s “near” feature, you can also drop off puzzles for nearby users and pick up new challenges left by other players.

When you play Smart As on the go using PS Vita’s Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, you’ll have the opportunity to unlock even more challenges in different regions with the Street Smart mode. Simply by competing in as many regional challenges as you can, you will get to prove that you are smarter, more travelled and better connected than your friends.

Watch on the video above for an exclusive sneak peek at Smart As in action, and check back soon for more Smart As news.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/05/17/table-top-tanks-bringing-explosive-ar-to-ps-vita-may-22nd/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u46ruQlPUH4
I'm Steve and I'd love to tell you about the latest great PS Vita Augmented Reality game Table Top Tanks, which we developed at Devil’s Details in Sheffield, UK. When we were asked if we’d like to develop Table Top Tanks by our friends at SCEE we couldn’t believe our luck: Who doesn’t like blowing stuff up with Tanks? And we got to play with and help develop PlayStation’s AR technology too. So, we said “Yes please!” and got down to work.

So, what’s in Table Top Tanks? Firstly, there are the tanks: They’re quite quick, nimble and fun to drive and you can choose from 10 different colors. Their main cannon is pretty powerful and you can upgrade its shell type by running over pickups; my favorite is the bouncing missile – they’re great fun to spray into the edge of the arena and watch them cause carnage and confusion as they bounce around. To get you started playing the game we’ve included a single player campaign, which will teach you how to play and challenge your tank skills.

But the real fun comes making your own maps using the simple editor. You pick a map size – small, medium or large – and then place virtual shapes around real world objects, so PS Vita can “see” the objects. You can also fill the shapes with water, smoke or fire and so that when they’re shot by a missile they’ll leak water, spill smoke or be set on fire.

Once you’ve crafted your level it’s time to play from a choice of capture the flag, last man standing or two vs. two game modes.

Table Top Tanks allows you to play with and against AI tanks (and you can choose how smart they are) but it’s much more fun to play against up to three friends over Ad Hoc. Share your newly created battlefield with your friends and duke it out from different angles. It’s really great fun, and because the levels are quick and easy to make go ahead and experiment by creating new maps.

With a little effort you can also move Table Top Tanks from the table top. If you print some new markers out but scale them up (we printed them so they filled A4 sheets, just make sure you keep the aspect ratio the same), you can upscale the awesome by playing Table Top Tanks on the floor rather than on a desktop. The Tanks become model car size and you can set up obstacles using the editor and get the whole house involved, blasting the dog or setting fire to the coffee table. We played quite a lot of large marker Table Top Tanks when we were developing the game and it’s serious fun; get some friends together and give it a go.

Finally, if you fancy a little extra twist on the tanks, we’ve got a tank pack DLC in the works which features our take on “toy” tanks. They’ve got a really distinct, bouncy shape and you also get a themed fighter jet too. They’re a firm favorite with us and we’re sure you’ll enjoy playing with them.

We look forward to hearing everyone’s feedback!

Idiots. Let's put outdated games like Smackdown 2010 and MLB 2010 up for sale! People really want those! How about one of the Silent Hill PSP Games that might actually sell and already work with the Vita? No, can't do that, there's a Silent Hill title for Vita coming out! It's only been delayed 3 times so far!

Yeah, I Mad.

I'm sure they'd like to get Konami's games up there, but from looking at the list, 2k and THQ are far more willing to help get their games on the Vita store than Konami is.

The Minis that are on the Vita's PS Store work now, so keep an eye on the list here.

They're looking to add the rest of the list I posted earlier over the next two weeks.
