Keep in mind, fake 360 update information comes out all the time from "insider sources" all the time. So, it's no different with the PS3. In fact, we can completely write off this source because he's already setting himself up for failure, while still being able to say he was credible. He names the 3 most likely updates that we already know are coming soon, then he goes on to say how everything can change and that he wouldn't be wrong if they did. Sorry, but that's as good as saying, "I know nothing." Then he goes on to say how super stardust will have co-op soon, something the game already has, and we already know is getting an update.

All we can really hope for is 2.4 having 2D trophies, and all we know is that Konami has been pushing Sony to get that update out the door so that MGS4 can make use of them.

Trophies are basically the PS3's achievements. Except with the PS3 you also get little bits of media with those achievements. When Home comes out, the plan was to be able to take 3D trophies, basically 3D models of stuff given to you in game and display them in your Trophy room in Home, and maybe display them in your apartment too.

Right now, since Home's public beta was pushed back, they're working on getting 2D trophies you can see in the XMB as a way for developers to start using them in their games. Keep in mind that Trophies aren't dependant on Home, it's just that Home is a cool way to show them off.

Sony many times had plans to incorporate things into certain firmwares, but never did. There were even some firmwares which were suppose to be released (as far as number is concerned) and never came out. Sony may try to implement a feature for a particular firmware, but if there's an issue an implementing it, they may remove it at the last minute (and hold it off to another).

Bah. Quit-Game XMB > In-Game XMB :)

The fact that they're going through the trouble of an interim 2.36 release seems to indicate that 2.40 might still take a while. :bomb:

Edit: Nice to hear that they call it "In-Game XMB" and not just "in-game communication". There's a big difference.

Awesome to hear. Gives me a reason to put some music on my ps3, though that means I will probably have to get a bigger harddrive though, something that was inevitable.
With them announcing 2.36 also, I have to agree with NTolerance and we will probably have a bit of a wait for 2.4. Still love to hear the news though.
Man it's been so long since I turned on my 360. Maybe I should go pick up ninja gaiden 2
That is the game that got me turning back on my 360. ;)

I can't lie.. I was thinking about taking my 360 out the box for NGII

Yea, I was gonna get NGII, but the demo was so dull to me. The action didn't feel satisfying, to fast and the camera was to crazy that you couldn't really identify what was going on. It's like what movies do in order to keep it PG13 they shake the camera during fights and zoom in so its not to graphic. And NGII does it on accident.

I know most would disagree, but I think NGII would highly benefit for some Slow Down cinematic moments during fights. Like atleast every 1/6 finishers would be in slowmo so you can see the whole animation.

But, I've been playing with my PS3 an insane amount. MGS4, MGO, GTA4, Blurays and I use it for Web browser sometimes and a music/podcast player. And I just got a 250gb so I have been loading it up with demos, I am having a total blast with it. And Home/2.4 is going to make it even better.

I was a little hazy at first, but I am definitely back to being a Playstation fanboy. (I also hate turning on my 360. So use to the crispness and smoothness of my PS3. Although I've been playing through Army of Two on 360, great game.)

2.36 is my 20th PS3 firmware update. Can't wait to have my 21st update with 2.4.

For those who haven't had a PS3 for long, let's just say the firmware update process has improved, because firmware use to be over 100MB in size early on (take WAY too long to download) and we use to have to plug the controller into a USB port to install the firmware.

I knew it'd be out late last night, so I checked as soon as my movie was over and sure enough.

Fastest FW update yet for me, downloaded and installed in less than 5 mins.

I thought they were still 110 MB or so.

It's ridiculous how much the PS3 has improved over the past year, I remember when I had my set up in my garage and I was waiting for the Heavenly Sword demo to come out, along with the firmware with wallpaper support.

So this does nothing really "Improves PS game stability" or something like that is what I'm reading.
But 2.40 is going to have IN GAME XMB AND Trophies? (From what I hear).
If so, Then the 2 things I want from PS3 will be done.
And I will be happy.
I wonder if 2.5/3 will be PS3 HOME...

Home could be 2.7, 3.0, 5.3, or whatever, it's just a matter of when it's run and what the next increment is.
I wonder what's changed.

Man it's been so long since I turned on my 360. Maybe I should go pick up ninja gaiden 2
I got a good 45 minutes further in Ninja Gaiden 2 waiting for this worthless firmware update. Then I followed with a few hours of Metal Gear and loved every minute of it.

Took me like 5 minutes to update (download and install).

No update is worthless. I believe this was needed to set the foundation up for 2.4.

Taken from joystiq:
The real biggie everyone's waiting for is firmware 2.4, which today was confirmed to include in-game XMB support along with the introduction of "trophies," something Sony promises we'll learn more about "soon."

I can't wait for this update. XMB IMO will finally be up to par w/ the dashboard in terms of gaming stuff

...more like 5.3 :)
So, am I right in assuming that in-game XMB = ability to play your music in any game? Or is that expecting too much?
that would be nice but I don't know of what details. I'm hoping for at least in game messaging and ability to do most xmb functions while in game/paused
You are absolutely ridiculous.

---

I had to download this worthless update when I came home from school last night. Cuttin' into my MGO time.
what's wrong with you... don't you know each update brings up closer to the holy grail of updates! dammit zew!
They could have packed up everything in 2.36 in with 2.4.
Of course they could have. But I don't really think SONY cares about our happiness.

It is obvious that 2.36 was needed to reduce the memory consumption of the XMB, which is needed for 2.4. So it in fact was not a worthless update. I imagine fw 2.4 will be over the standard 100mb for FW releases, and by releasing some of it early, we dont have to download as much in FW 2.4

So 2.4 brings in-game XMB, which means we're getting in-game communications, right? It'd be pretty silly to have in-game XMB without that. And from what I'm hearing, it just replaces the older black screen, so games don't need a FW update to support it. But if it had something like custom soundtracks, then it would need a FW update to support that feature.

I also don't think you'll be able to see your friends' trophies with 2.4 either. Also, thinking further ahead, I'm guessing 2.50 is going to be the Home Beta Update and BC for 40gb systems. I'd also hope for a full upscaler.

This is really strange, I just updated to the new 2.36 firmware and now my new dualshock 3 wont stop going to the left of the XBM, it is like it is completely stuck holding down left on the dpad. I've tried restarting the system and turning everything off but nothing seems to works.

Edit: I wont even turn on the system now, anyone know where I can contact Sony about this, I purchased the MDG4 bundle.

Edit #2: I managed to get it into Hot Shots Golf and it is in fact the the left analog stick that is pushing to the left but I really don't know why.
They could have packed up everything in 2.36 in with 2.4.
I said it before, 2.36 may be the foundation for 2.4 (such as reducing the amount of memory before hand, along with testing a few different software techniques to reduce memory assuring they work). Plus, I rather them get some issues solved now than wait (a few certain games are having network ones, where one even caused my PS3 to freeze when sending an invite and I had to power my console off from the back to reset it). That could be a stability issue to fix.
The 60gb is the best music player.. I'd give it that title just because of it playing SACDs
20GB and 80GB plays SACDs also.

Try pressing the PS button once you do it. See if anything helps. That's maybe to see if it needs to be reset or something.
Absolutely ridiculous.
Every firmware update decreases the amount of memory the XMB uses, which is very important. Let's just say Sony reduced memory it uses, yet people are now starting to experience some problem (such as PS Button no longer working, certain games no longer working (happened before with update 1.81), people having trouble logging on PSN (happened with update 1.92), at least they would be finding an issue before Firmware 2.4. There have been some MGS4 problems reported, which could be firmware related, so why wait and fix the issue and hear people complain. Regardless, no firmware update is worthless and as long as something is being improved on the console, I'm all for it. I'm more than willing to spend 5 minutes of my time to fix stuff, since I rather not have something major happen to my console for refusing to wait 5 minutes.

If it was only 5 minutes, it's more like 15.

I don't understand either since the 360's updates are quarterly and add a lot of new features and take less than 30 seconds to download and update.

Let's just say, I find it annoying to have to update to play online when I hardly use the console.

I could care less about these updates now. Its only a disappointment every time I update only to find that Home is still not released...
Sorry if I'm late asking this, but were any new video formats added. I'm just waiting for MKV support.
I highly doubt that's coming at all. Plus you would still need support for any of the video or audio formats used in the MKV files you had. Though if the PS3 ever got SMB support I'll feel a whole lot different.

All of the mkv video files I have, use formats that the ps3 can play. its just a pain in the ass to extract them. Or I just convert the mkv to vob, but the results on that have been fairly disappointing. I guess I'm just stuck extracting them.
I had to update to play MGO.
You just said:
Let's just say, I find it annoying to have to update to play online when I hardly use the console.
So if you must be using the console then. ;)
I've heard all of these Sony PR excuses before.
So, how many PR make excuses anyway? Most all (MS, Sony, Sega, whatever). I'd have to dig up the story about Home, but Sony themselves (I can't remember which person it was, I'm thinking David Reeves) admitted to making the mistake of not directing Home for gamers, which is part of the reason they are overhauling it. And oh course, Kaz said he isn't too pleased with the current state of Home, as of last year, which is why he delayed it also.

How long has MGS4 been out? I've owned the console for awhile and that is the first game I bought.

So, no. I don't use it that often.
