The Official PS3 System Update Thread - 3.10 Available Now
Except on the 360 they take 5 seconds. I'd be amazed if the PS3 game updates did that.
360 updates must be under a 5mb size cap, though (PS3 has no size cap). I think that's pretty stupid. You're seeing an increasing number of games get by this using the Marketplace like Burnout, Left 4 Dead, Street Fighter 4, and Fable 2.
2.80 available now.
YAY!! I'd better update the pos tonight then. What's this pos do, I wonder? If it magically makes my PS3 make me money even when it's shut off, it's a blessing. Otherwise, this is MORE useless shit.

Thanks for the heads up though.

I came here for this, and frankly expected more out of you.

Thanks anyway.
Looks like this one isn't forced. Strange. You can sign in just fine with the older FW.
Now if Sony can make it so EVERY update is optional like this one, then I'll be really happy. :D But I went through and searched for the update and did it anyway, since I figured it'd be forced eventually and I don't want it to happen tomorrow night for CAG GTA night.

Hmm, so you did the update when you weren't busy so that it wouldn't stop you when you wanted to play online in the near future..... smart.

If they actually put up the updates universally in times past I don't think I'd have been as annoyed as I was. However, they had listed one as 'coming out soon', but with no real firm timeline as to WHEN. But I'm still hoping they do a USEFUL update again sometime(the chat thing is about the only thing I really USE).
Internet browser is better. Cheapest quit whining:lol:
Who's whining? I'm just glad I found out about it long before 10 pm tonight when CAG GTA night starts.

Thing is, ever since I got my PS3 back from Sony, it seems like the trophies(that I don't care bout anyway) take forfuckinever to load.

Funny how there are tards around complaining about the amount of time it takes to DL yet come here or some other forum to complain about for a good 10min+ wasting their time...LOL

Anyhow updates take roughly 5 mins for me. If you take more than that, blame your ISP or fix your damn router.

If Sony would release something GOOD for a change or at least send out a mass PSN message saying 'NEW UPDATE PLEASE DOWNLOAD', then maybe I wouldn't be so pissed when it comes as a surprise that I have to update.

I don't check their silly 'blog' on playstation.com EVER, so unless I find out about it here or when I get stuck downloading it when I'm just trying to get on and play a game, then I feel I got a right to be annoyed.

How hard would it be to tell PS3 owners in a message sent to all to download the new fw? Seriously?

As for the speed at which I can DL them, I'm on wireless, my PS3 is upstairs and the router is downstairs. I don't even mind the amount of time it takes, as long as I have some friggin' warning though.

Wold that not be the purpose of the blog?
What about the news feed that scrolls in the upper right of the XMB?

Since Sony promised more PS1 titles on PSN they better update PS1 emulation. Is sad when unpaid amateur part-time developers does a better job emulating PS1 than team of Sony engineers.

Does Sony ever go into detail anywhere about what these vague "performance has been improved" updates do? Does anyone? I always wonder if maybe they've made a change to a game I'm playing.

I don't mind the updates (except when the last two went live just as GTA was starting), I'm just curious.

Edit: In-game XMB???

Because I'm lazy and rather not surf to some stupid blog that I don't want to read in the first place, since it's usually just some Sony corporate drone praising the 'revolutionary' crap they're adding via the latest LOOOOOONG fw update.

PS2 software BC patch/fw FTW....everything else......not so much.
So I think the only thing 2.8 did was give cheapest something to bitch about.
There's plenty of other things I could bitch about, but don't even get me started. :D

You could use the time that you complain to goto the blog. Or you could create a feed in your e-mail.
You'd like the blog, Cheapest. You could complain as much as you'd like and there'd always be somebody to agree with you there.
I was actually thinking the same thing when I saw a few people bitching about "Worthless FW updates" when I glanced through the comments on the 2.8 blog post to see if anyone posted any hidden features.
Doesn't a message pop up in the upper right of the screen when there's a new firmware update available?
I hardly ever pay attention to that, since it's usually announcing some new shit they put into the store for people to buy, buy, buy.
You could use the time that you complain to goto the blog. Or you could create a feed in your e-mail.
Or I could be a lazy bastard and expect Sony to shoot me a message so I don't have to go downstairs to go on their stupid blog? As for their e-mails, I get tons of them from Sony and I pay as little attention to them as the thing in the upper right corner of the XMB screen.
You'd like the blog, Cheapest. You could complain as much as you'd like and there'd always be somebody to agree with you there.
Actually I was on there after the last one and I posted a few comments, which were promptly responded to with 'well don't play online if you don't like updates' and other stuff like 'download them via a flash drive then update your PS3 like that'.

I don't mean the information board, which you should have turned off immediately, I mean in the space where it says "Signed In" when you first turn the console on. I swore a message appeared there when a new firmware was up, but I didn't see one tonight.

things i have noticed with 2.80

improvements to text chat. line length no longer limited to 40, (now its 80 or 100)
and you can hit the ps button to return to your game. (one step now, vs like 3 steps previously)

Yeah I'm pretty sure you're right about that. On all of the other updates it would say that I was signed in and then I would get that message and be forced to update. For whatever reason Sony didn't force this one on us.

Next week they should do 2.81 and for the explanation just say "No performance enhancements, we just like to fuck with cheapest." :D

IAmTheCheapestGamer;6001693 Or I could be a lazy bastard and expect Sony to shoot me a message so I don't have to go downstairs to go on their stupid blog? As for their e-mails said:
So you ignore the news feed? Yet want sony to shoot you a message when it is there. Why do you have to go downstairs when there is an internet browser on the ps3? Then you ignore the e-mails, when you want sony to send you a message. You just need and want things to complain about.

Actually, I meant a message on PSN, not in my normal e-mail. Plus, the PS3 browser causes a freezing issue on my PS3 at times, so I only use it for a few select uses anymore.
When was the last time you used. It's rock solid after the last few updates. Hulu would freeze but it's so smooth now.
About a week before this update came out, though I only use it to research some stuff if I don't feel like going downstairs on my PC. I don't even use it for that long, but when I do I don't want to have to force the PS3 to shut down because it won't respond after trying to get out of the browser.

Also 2.80 brought back the TAC adapter working fully with playstation 2 controllers. It was 2.7 something that broke compatibility and sony put it back in whether that was the intent or it's nice to have it working. As i have not got a dualshock 3 and been using dualshock 2's to play games. They never blocked the sg guitar's to work in rock band 2 or guitar hero.

Anyways before this happened when the 2.7 update it froze my ps3 when plugged in and set to gamepad setting now it works fine. I remember googling it and people who used arcade sticks that were used with ps 2's were upset and it's nice to see sony at least changed that around. Makes the 20 dollar adapter useful again.

I'll definitely have to Google the adapter, since I have like 2-3 DS2's and if I can stow away my DS 3 until I need to go to the XMB and just use the wired DS2's that'll be a great thing since I really don't care if I abuse the shit out of them.

something i've noticed with 2.8 is that my controller is registering as input #1 all the time now (which is good). before it would always assign the various RB/GH dongles i had plugged in first and i would have to manually change the controller to input 1 after starting a non-music game. not huge, but gets rid of a frustration

I need to update my system because that was annoying as hell having to reassign the controller for certain games that wouldnt let me play as 2p.

Something exciting might be coming to the PSN tomorrow:

http://kotaku.com/5339495/psn-down-for-maintenance-during-sonys-gamescom-press-conference

Sony threw a little notice up on their support site overnight, letting everyone know that the PlayStation Network will be down for a couple of hours on August 18. Say, isn't that the day of Sony's GamesCom press conference?

My, it is.

The outage is expected to commence at 9am PST, August 18 in the US, which in Germany is 6pm on August 18. Say, isn't that the exact time Sony's Gamescom press conference kicks off?

My, it is.

There have been countless rumours of major new additions being made to the PSN in the coming months; looks like we could well be seeing the first of those tomorrow.

PlayStation®Network Maintenance

So... what " major new additions" could be coming? Games actually worth playing? A controller that actually works? Something to make the PS3 actually useful? Other than blu ray?

My guess is they're revamping the Playstation store or Home is no longer going to be a Beta. I highly doubt, nor would it impact my PS3 since I have an original 20GB upgraded to 160GB, that they're releasing the BC patch.
