3rd party controllers are such garbage they might as well be counterfeit. Seriously try playing a competitive game with one. I broke like 3 PS2 joysticks
New Avatars?
I searched the store, I was looking to see if they added new avatars anywhere on PSN.

the only one I consider an exception is the Madcatz Fightpads, but that's it.

There was a company called Interact which made some damn fine third party controllers in the PS1 and PS2 eras. I had one of their turbo fire controllers up till about a year ago and it worked great up till I got rid of it.

They were actually the only company I really trusted the off brand controllers from. I'm just shocked that so many actually went into a frenzy looking for those fightpads and arcade controllers from Mad Catz, since they've been universally reviled for years as a maker of crap peripherals.

Yeah, but with the TE sticks and fightpads, Madcatz made a huge turnaround... thank MarkMan.

Anybody else's PS3 web browser take it in the ass with the latest FW update? Now browsing Youtube is slow as molasses, and viewing AVGN videos on Gametrailers causes the system to crank indefinitely.

I've had the EXACT OPPOSITE result after the update... my browser runs 4 times faster downloading video and bringing up sites.

Damn, the only game I have for my ps3 so far (Uncharted) is apparently the game that has the most problems with the firmware update. I can't get anywhere in chapter 9 without it freezing on me.

AVGN is definitely a No GO.. as it made my system freeze... first time I've been to the site.. Youtube for me works fine. I'm using a 60gb Launch PS3.

I'm using a 60gig PS3, too. Not launch, probably the last batch before they stopped making them.

Gametrailers was always weird on the PS3 because of the way it reloaded its ads, but it always ran the videos fine. Now I think just reloading certain ads crashes my PS3. Particularly flash ones.

Yeah my web browsing has been much better. Matter of fact, it has not frozen my ps3 since 3.0 I use the browser everyday, so if I notice something I will post it. Try clearing your cache etc Chuplayer, it may help

which PS3 model are you using?

Youtube has worked fine for me since day 1. Are you guys using the PS3-specific youtube page or just regular? The PS3 specific one lags for me a tiny bit, but catches up in the first few seconds
Any way around the updates yet?
trade your system to someone who's already updated theirs.

I know the game is buggy to begin with, but anyone else having problems with Fallout 3? Mine has froze about 4 times since the 3.0 update.

I cleared my cache, which I didn't really need to do since I completely reformatted the hard drive and didn't save my profile but rather copied all my saves from my profile and resurrected it through PSN, and that helped Youtube somewhat. Gametrailers AVGN videos run a bit better now, but the system still freezes up right after closing the browser. The new hands on the clock activity indicator just stops, and the hard drive light on my PS3 stops lighting.

I hope it's not the stupid new thing in the upper right that's taking much more resources.
Thats crazy. Almost every time I would use the browser before 3.0 it would freeze upon exiting, just like yours.
And mine almost never froze.

WTF.

Does anyone else use a wired USB headset with their PS3? I ask because before the update I had ZERO issues with this old SOCOM USB headset I'm using with my PS3. But since the update, it randomly loses power.

This morning, I was playing GTA IV with some friends and it literally was going on and off every other second.

I also had the mini USB charging cable act in the same manner when trying to charge the controller with it, which is why I asked how everyone else charges their controller(s).

I mean, I'm not about to shell out for a Bluetooth headset to use with my PS3, since I find that most(if not all) of them are very uncomfortable. I hate having anything IN my ear and I prefer the USB headsets.

I have both a Bluetooth and corded USB headset. Last night I used all of my Rock Band instruments on the slim without any issues. I have yet to use the PS2 corded headset since 3.0. I recommend any of the Motorola headsets that have the flip out boom mic. It sits on your ear but doesn't have the little nub that goes all the way in your ear canal. Also flipping the mic open and closed turns it on and off. You don't have to sit there an hold down a button when you want to use it.

Well, I did also get the slim model PS3 recently, though before the update I had zero issues with the headset. It's plugged in via the usb hub for Rock Band that I bought from Target for $5.

Actually, I have the type of USB headset that it's just a button you click in or out to turn the mic on or off and it has a volume control wheel on it as well.

I'm definitely not willing to pay anymore money for another headset, just because one is acting up and wasn't acting up prior. But thanks for the suggestion nonetheless, Chitown.

I had one of those big NFL coach type Motorola headsets for all of a day when I still had my fat model PS3 and the volume on that was horrendous, not to mention the switch for it was tiny in comparison to the headset itself.

Sounds like you and I have the same or very similar USB mics. I think I got mine several years ago from a Wal-Mart clearance rack. It's a Logitech PS2 mic with a little box on it for volume control and to mute the mic. I think the light on it turns blue when it's on and red when it's muted. I was using mine because I kept forgetting to charge my bluetooth one and it kept running out of juice mid game. I had to switch back because my son keeps running around and tripping over the cord.

That's the one I have exactly. The sound quality on it is pretty good, but I don't understand WHY it's been cutting out on me, since I never had this issue before. It could be because I have it hooked up via a usb hub, but since the slim only has the 2 usb ports, I wanted to be able to have a keyboard hooked up as well as the mic and that's the best way I could do it.

Only problem I've had with the new update is that.. the PS3 takes a LONG ass time recognizing my external hard drive and loading the media I have on it. Anyone else notice this.. or is my external just a shit show.

ive got a wd external hd and its always been like that. it recognizes it instantly but when it comes to showing whats on it it takes a good minute or so.

I almost panicked when transferring my old PS2 saves from my memory cards and nothing showed up on either the transfers or the original cards. Sounds like an issue with peripherals across the board.

I use a wired Logitech USB headset with a USB extension cord with my PS3 and I haven't had any issues since the update. I'm plugged directly into the console, though, not into a hub.

But you also have the 60gb model though if I remember correctly Randy, right? That has 4 USB ports of it's own already, so there's really no need for a hub of any kind.

The only reason I don't just unplug the hub and use just the headset and charging cable in the two USB ports is because I like using the USB keyboard for typing up messages and in. It takes too long with the controller to type and I'm not about to pay Sony $40-50 for that chatpad bullshit when I have an old keyboard lying around I can use.

Since 3.0, my Blu's, DVDs and games don't AutoStart when I put the disc inside the console even though I have that option as ON. Any suggestions?

So wait, because some people are complaining(me being one of them) about the stupid revamp of the friends list, now Sony may make another fuckin' FW update that we have to download just to kinda reset the friends list to a more tolerable design?

Why not just give us the option in the old FW update to just go back to the OLD friends list, in the event that some of us don't like the new 3/4 screen hogging design?

Well, if they're listening to me, then give me a downloadable patch for each PS2 game I own(a handful at this point), since they're not willing to do across the board PS2 BC but are instead pulling shenanigans like the re-releasing of old games on Blu-Rays.:D

Apparently not, since I was perfectly fine with the old XMB and friends list, but again that goes back to forcing all PS3 owners(who want to be on PSN)to conform and all have the same silly FW. If it fixed some major, major flaw I could see it being a forced update, but this didn't fix shit(for me) and made the XMB look like shit.

People have mentioned this a few times but you seem to keep ignoring it; firmware updates almost always include tweaks 'under the hood' to improve system performance. Security improvements are likely included as well. If you haven't noticed, the PS3 has yet to be cracked...

Well, I'd rather if Sony actually told me about the security and other 'fixes' they did than the garbage they've been throwing into the silly updates. And yes, I know I'm a 'broken record' already with this.

As for the PS3 not being 'cracked', who cares? I pay for my games, so the piracy crap doesn't mean shit to me, but with how buggy some of these games coming out are and how many times they have to be patched, I'm very strongly leaning towards the 'dark side' of gaming at this point. Why pay good money for broken games?

Some of these devs releasing glitchy/bug filled games don't deserve our money.

cheapest youve got to relax more before you end up becoming one of those grumpy old guys who waves an angry fist at kids who get too close to his lawn. if you have so many questions for sony email them or go to their headquarters and demand to see the manager. i stil dont get how someone who seemingly loathes every move sony makes can still own their console and continues to buy their games. or is it that you work for microsoft? that would explain alot lol. do you flip your ps3 off every time you use it?

Actually, my gripe now was NOT about BC, since it's obvious that Sony wants to pull a Nintendo and re-release old games on BR discs to get more money from the suckers who will go 'oooo it has trophies and is purtier than the old version'.

I've given up on that, but at least if they actually detail the fixes and other good stuff they put in and stop going 'here's that useless shit you guys kept asking for', like a shiny new friends list or those silly fuckin' sparkles on the background of the XMB.

Most of the junk they keep adding is superfluous crap and serves no real purpose to enhance the gaming experience.

As for me working for MS, why is it that as soon as someone critiques anything about the PS3 they automatically 'work for MS'(...errrr scuse me M$, I forgot cuz they're all about the $$ and Sony isn't, right?)?

Personally, if they give us a mini download to allow us to change back the friends list and not make it a ginormous file again, that's fine. But I was perfectly happy with the OLD friends list(as were many others from seeing this thread).

Actually, if you must know, even though I owned a PS2 first last gen, I preferred the original XBox since I didn't have to keep buying fuckin' memory cards every time I filled up the current tiny ones like Sony made.

Damn kids, get off my lawn.

Seriously though, my gripe now is NOT about BC(though re-releasing OLD games in compilations and having the gall to charge $40 for 2 games is ridiculous ), since it's obvious with the God Of War compilation that that is the route Sony is taking.

It's good for those who haven't played the games and are willing to be normal consumers still, not for me though.

As for the updates, I'd rather if they tell us about the security and other flaws it FIXES, rather than the crap they seem to keep trying to add in to copy Microsoft, which is how it appears from my perspective.

As to trophies/achievements, here's my opinion on them, summed up concisely by Foamy The Squirrel: http://www.illwillpress.com/ACH22YT.html

But as of now, I like my PS3 and it's a pretty good game machine, but that's all it's ever going to be for me.

You're aware that PS3 owners wanted the God of War games put on bluray, right? I think the GoW collection would be a good value for $20 or less, anyway. I can wait.

$40 is more than I'd pay for it, but GoW I and II still sell for $20 each so it makes some sense to me.
