I'm still wondering if people are really having problems with 3.01...so it only fixes Uncharted 1, but breaks other games?? I can't find any corroborating evidence to support this.
It's weird that Cheapest didn't complain about the optional update and said he'd download it anyway. It must be an impostor.
Cheapest also said he spent 3 dollars on the LBP Dynamic theme. Most definitely an impostor

 Cmon now. I didn't complain bout this update to fix an update because it was to supposedly fix issues that the prior update caused.

LOL I like the LBP theme actually and that this update to fix an update was released so quickly. It actually means Sony is sorta admitting 'hey we fucked up, here's something to hopefully eliminate the issues'.

tongue planted firmly in cheek, dude.
Is anyone having playback control problems when playing dvd/blu-rays? I can't pause/rewind/fast forward using the controller.
Im having some wierd issues with this type of thing too lol.

I'm still having issues with my USB headset. Then again, I think it may just be that the cable got a bit snarled and it may be that the headset is just breaking down.

they should sue, but not just for the firmware but for all these stupid YLOD, and GPU errors that are popping up. My console should not be malfunctioning after three years... I take good care of my system, and yet its still messing up.

As do I. I baby my systems usually, since if I'm paying THAT much it better last. Not to mention the fact that it's been 2-3 years since the PS3 released, so how are they still able to justify the $150 flat repair fee?

If anyone with just a lens issue were to Google replacement lenses, they would find viable options other than sending it to Sony.

No, it should mess up after three years. It should also mess up after 1 year, 1 month, etc. Sony has a pretty damn good track record this generation. Electronic parts DO sometimes break down, you'll have a few in each batch, that's just the nature of electronics.

Yeah not only the repair fee but the fact that they were the ones to cause the malfunction in the first place!

Seems like I read an article a few weeks back that Sony does the same thing with the PSP. The author of the article wanted to repair his 1000 unit and they wanted like $120 when he could just go out and buy a brand new 2000 for just a few bucks more.

anyone know of a direct download link for FW 3.00. Also is it safe to download 3.01, or should we still be staying away from that firmware. Please Help!

I do not use my ps3 online and I want to update the firmware, so I can earn trophies.

1) Is there a site to download pre 3.0 updates?

2) Do you guys know what games contain the firmware updates?

yeah, I agree parts do break down, but in the case of the 360 and some of the 360 cases I think that it is the design of the system that's causing these overheating issues. PS3 GPU chips were having the same problem when used with PCs as well. There's too much of a pattern imo, so say that its just some electronic parts breaking down. Yes the PS2 had some issues w/ its hardware, but I think that the design flaws may have caused its issues as well. Rather than trying to go for a sexy design, I rather see a console that's designed for usage. Look at PCs... they last a lot longer than 2-3 years.

PC parts can and do break down often, just like any other electronics device/component.
I thought the 3.0 and above update is crashing ps3s?
I thought it was the 3.01 that was making people blu ray drive stop working. When my PS3 came back from Sony it was loaded with 3.00

Engadget doesn't say exactly which one, but my guess is 3.01. I have the 3.0 upgrade and haven't any problems yet. I held off on 3.01, so I'm hoping I dodged a bullet.

From what I can gather, it is effecting some systems with a lower quality bluray drive. I want to upgrade my console, but people are talking about their systems being bricked on the PS forums even with 3.01
PC parts can and do break down often, just like any other electronics device/component.
not as much as the PS2, or Xbox 360..

Just for the record, I upgraded to 3.01 with no problems. It seems to me it's a very small but vocal minority that has had any problems, but nobody knows for sure.

Well, even if it is a very small group, I wouldn't expect anything less than them being vocal over a piece of software released by the company itself fuckin' up their system.

If I were them and it could be 100% proven that the FW screwed up the system in the first place, I'd be demanding a free repair/replacement from Sony, even if the system were long out of warranty.

I also upgraded to 3.01 without problems on my slim system.

I have not got on my PS3 in some time but do you have to update or do you have an option not to? I don't want to take my chance with this update till I know they have a fix for it because I dont want my 60 gig to no longer work and I don't have the money for one to be fixed.

IIRC, 3.0 is mandatory, but 3.0.1 is strictly optional (and doesn't show itself unless you update your console manually.

I wish they would release one of the older updates. I have V 2.3 or something, so I can not earn trophies. I really don't want to risk bricking a brand new system that is out of warranty.

Absolutely, but we're far from that point.

nothing will happen.

I did something similar with Nintendo although luckily my system did not get bricked. I had been playing a re-surfaced copy of Wii Sports that I had gotten from Gamestop. it would run about 1/2 of the time. The other 1/2 I would get a disc error and it would not play. Finally right after a Nintendo firmware update the console would disc error everytime so I could not play it. I'm guessing maybe they updated the security and it thought my disc was a copy or something? Anyways while I was talking to the rep I said that I've heard of console updates messing up systems before and it was awfully coincidental that the day my system stops reading the disc is the same day that I got the update. The rep thought I was completely off my nut and just blew it off. I finally had to pay something like $20 for a replacement disc.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...s_Action_Lawsuit_Filed_Over_PS3_Failures/3551

Looks like they have a class action lawsuit against them now. I guess I'm going to have to update and might as well do it all this weekend. I bought some BDs from Best Buy yesterday and started watching them on a nother player but seeing how I have Demon's Soul on the way I'm going to have to play the damn PS3 some time. I was wanting to hold off till all this was over as I have a 60 gig with full BC and don't want to pay them 150 to fix it if something goes wrong because of an update they did.

New (Slim) PS3 owner here. I'd like to hit up the PSN Store, but I don't want to run into any troubles playing Uncharted 1, Bioshock, the few other games I have, or movies, blah blah blah...

I believe it's currently on 2.80 after playing Uncharted 2. Is it safe to update to 3.00/3.01 on a new Slim? I haven't found a clear answer for/against updating the firmware. Any insight is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Actually, I believe the slim comes with 3.0 FW installed already. My slim has had only the usual freezing/hanging issues that're a standard of the PS3 at times.

Otherwise, it's ok and it makes the XMB background all sparkly. Oooooooo sparkly.

Dear person talking out of your ass,

I hope this letter reaches you well. Slim comes with 2.8 installed.

Thanks, your buddy, blitz6speed.

To the person asking, 3.01 is fine. I have it on my slim and havent had a freeze running it. Upgrade away.

Mine came with 2.76 or something like that. Then the Uncharted 2 disc made me update to 2.80. I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Alright, here goes nothin'... If I'm not back in two days, it's because I've been enchanted by the sparkliness of the XMB background. Please do not come looking for me.

Thanks, Cheapy G... And Blitz.

I bought a slim at launch (actually, before launch, found a walmart who broke street date) and it came with 2.80. Weird yours came with 2.76. And no worries, dont let fear mongers on the internet make you afraid of firmware upgrades, they are no big deal.
