Finally got my Akira UMD from DVDplanet and it is hawt! Includes English and Japanese language tracks with subtitles (defaults English and subtitles on) and 3 trailers for other animes. My UMDs are limited to T2 and Spider-Man 2 but I'd say the picture quality is the best of the bunch; the picture was clear as a bell when I watched it outside on a sunny day. The sound was meh, but I felt like it was a new dub, although I haven't watched it for a while in English. If it was a new dub, I liked it more than the old one. But on Spider-Man 2 and T2 it was easier to judge distance on the audio.

I picked up a pre-played copy of Dave Chappelle: Live at the Filmore UMD for $5.99 (about $5.40 after edge) Pre-played at EB yesterday. I don't know if it's YMMV, but it seems like a good deal to me if anyone wants to check it out.

I was in my local wal-mart at the beginning of this week and noticed they had the UMDs for Brothers Grimm and Four Brothers. I checked the release schedule and both are set to release this Tuesday (12/20). They aren't in any other local stores including the other Wal-Marts around here. Has anyone seen this happen before where a store gets a movie shipment a week early and puts them out? I thought stores couldn't put out movies or games before their release date.....

my local WalMart always seems to have PSP games and movies before the street date. I don't think they consider PSP as having street dates.
When a movie comes out on DVD & PSP on a tuesday, they'll hold the DVD in the back until tuesday, but the UMD will be available on thurdsday or friday- 4 or 5 days before street date.

Not really. Wal-Marts (and many other stores) have done this for years.They won't get fined, nothing will happen to them. Its simply a scare tactic the managers tell there empoyees so they don't put the titles out early.

Actually I have heard about stores being sued by the manufacturers for putting out some of the more high-profile titles (Star Wars, Passion of The Christ, Pixars etc.) early.

It has the same amount of episodes as the dvd version. I don't think it has the extras and such though.

never thought I would be buying a UMD movie, but I couldn't pass up on getting the original Dawn of the Dead for my PSP. I have it in a bunch of different versions on DVD but oh well.

Well I watched my two UMDs that I got from DDD's buy 1 get 1 free sale...Labyrinth and Dave Chapelle: For What It's Worth.
Labyrinth, the picture is chopped up, mediocre, and the movie-flat out sucks...and Chappelle is hilarious and a good buy other than the fact that it's only an hour long, so it's kind of a rip-off.
Overall I'm disappointed with both, and especially Sony for making them.

With the buy one get 1 free sale at EB/GS two of my items were UMDS, American Pie and Clerks.
American Pie was decent quality, and for some reason, extras that aren't on the DVD. (?) In any case they weren't very good (there was a lot though).
Clerks had excellent picture and sound and a few entertaining extras.
Overall, both are recommended, American Pie less so though.

Btw if you can find an All Region version of it I would suggest getting the "History Of BoA" UMD. The picture quality ising AWESOME and how many music UMD's are there also? Much to the stupidity of Sony. If Sony would've ditched SACD's and used UMD's as the medium with better sound with m/v's added they might have been surprised how well UMD product sold. I'm not saying they neccessarily pushed it in the wrong direction, it wasn't a bad idea, they just overcharged on the product compared to regular DVD as well as overlooking something I think would make a decent amount of profit for a more niche audiophile market.
