The Official Sonic and the Secret Rings Thread (Out Now!)
Can someone explain what each skill ring does? The manual says nothing about it.
You can assign a unique set of skills/actions to each ring. Everytime you customize a ring, your changes are saved to the individual ring.

So you can have up to 4 different skill sets, and when you want to use a different skill set, just choose another ring.

So maybe Ring A could be your ring equipped with lots of speed enhancing abilities, and Ring B could be a ring that focuses on gathering coins.

So having Ring B equipped wouldn't unlock any special attribute that couldn't be unlocked with any of the other Skill Rings, right?
So having Ring B equipped wouldn't unlock any special attribute that couldn't be unlocked with any of the other Skill Rings, right?
Nope, I am almost positive it goes by level. The Skill Rings are just used to make things easier so you don't customize it every time you do a new mission so you can have one for collecting rings or one for other things.
Wow, Sonic moves really slow in this game...so far I definitely prefer the PS3/360 game.
Because he runs a bit slower?! Wow, just wow.

I was going to ask about the rings too - we keep equipping different ones but I guess they have nothing on them. Do you need to get further into the game to get the things to customize them with? We've done a few stages in the dinosaur world (and several in the sand place). We keep unlocking skills but there doesn't seem to be a way to apply them to anything. Also, the run backwards to collect 10 rings thing seems totally broken - it says to push 2 to jump backwards. Doesn't work. We can collect all the rings going backwards and none register as counting. I assume this is because we're not doing whatever it is we need to do with the '2' button. But it doesn't work. Or is this a skill you need to equip? If so, it would be nice if the game prompted you for that in some way!

This might sound stupid, but have you activated the skills that have been unlocked? When you select the "customize" option on the Skill Ring screen, make sure whatever skill you want to use has a green dot to the left of it.

I thought I looked all over for some list of skills and found nothing. Only thing I seemed to find was a "status". To be honest, I assumed the things I was unlocking were automatically applied until I came here and read this thread tonight. Though the 4 identical and do-nothing rings made me know something was up. So, in the one where you need to push '2' to jump backwards that is a skill you need to equip as well? If so, then that is some HORRIBLE game design where it lets you do this level without having the skill equipped.

However, now that I think about it I do remember clicking on a "customize" and it said I had no equipment to customize yet. So maybe these are different skills that come later (that go on the rings)?? Or maybe you need to get to a certain level and then the game tells you about these things??

The training missions always say "Use to ." For instance, you want to equip "Back Step" to collect those rings. They're not necessary to do, but can help in using it. As posted above, a green dot to the left of the skill name indicates it's equipped.

I got about 5/6 of the way through the main story of the game I think before I really started to run out of room for all the skills I want to use. For a good long while you need not worry about having different rings equipped with different sets I don't think.

Rented it yesterday, enjoying it so far. I dare say this is my favorite Sonic game (I'm not a huge Sonic fan). After most recently playing the original Sonic and Sonic Rush, I never really had the desire to keep playing, but this one has a lot of the "one more time" factor if you run into a tough mission. Overall I haven't had too many of those, but I'm only through the second world (just unlocked the Dinosaur level).

The only control-related issue I've had is depth-perception, I guess you could call it. Specifically, if a turn is coming up, and there are obstacles to avoid on it, it can be difficult to make sure I'm lined up properly until its too late. But as of yet I haven't run into any cheap deaths from bad camera control, though that might come later.

Jumping and charging took a few missions to get used to, but now they're pretty easy. Once in a while I won't jump high enough or soon enough to lock on and I'll fall to my death, but that's usually my fault.

All in all, well worth a rental, and I will likely add this to my list of games to get in the $20-$30 range.

This might be a stupid question, BUT, how the hell do you get past that cactus on the dinosaur level? It's the second level of the dinosaur one where you can't get defeated.

I would say it's about halfway through and you are going around a tight corner but there is a big cactus blocking the way. How do I get past that?

I know exactly what you are talking about. I had the same problem. A short/quick jump worked for me... after about 5 tries.
It'll be $19.99 on Black Friday at Best Buy.
For anybody who doesn't have this game, pick it up at this price. It's such an underrated gem--once you get the improved controls, the game is amazing.

Hmm, I'd say its worth that. Not sure if its worth braving Best Buy on Black Friday, but I'd pay $20 for it.

I bought this the day it came out, because of the CC giftcard deal. Played it for a about a week, and then stopped. Haven't touched it since.

I think I'm finally ready to admit it... I didn't like this game. I really, really didn't. Novel approach to everything, but slightly poorly executed. It's a love or hate it type of game.

This adds nothing to the discussion, really, but I figure I'd throw it out there anyway.

its not a must-buy, but this game really suprised me. it vworks really well, and 20 dollars is worth it. I paid 60 euros ast month for it

I beat this game the other night knowing I would never touch it after Galaxy comes out. I can't believe how much the final boss battle makes you shake the remote (I hope that doesn't spoil anything for anyone, doubt you'll buy the game anyway). The game didn't get good until you had enough power ups about 3/5 into the game (those power ups help you actually control Sonic). It's not that bad of a game it's just that I'd never want to play it again ever.
