The one and only CAG Super Smash Brothers Brawl Tournament! Beef vs. JoeB, FINALS!!!!
I never fought against a good Mario in Brawl. That's why your FLUDD surprised me. Didn't know he could do that.
Beef plays Mario now? I wanna see this in action! His Kirby and Lucario are already excellent.
Hey, guy, don't worry about it. The deadline isn't for another ~24 hours. You've still got time. :)

Another note: as the tournament progresses, I can see more and more why Beef organized it. Self-gratification, yes? :whistle2:k

Only kidding, of course!
 I'll never tell!
What the hell!?

Who am I going to root for now? Beef? Pfffft.
You damn right.
If there is a second tournament, perhaps we can all pitch in for prizes. I was thinking of gifting a Wii VC game.
I'd be down for that, actually.
What is this. Why so many people expected me to win?
Because you are Strell, there are certain...expectations that come up.
I've been meaning to do this for awhile and now I finally have the chance. Here's the 64-man (62, actually) bracket for this tourney. I'll update it again once the Final Four are left.

Mr. Beef, feel free to post this on the OP if you'd like.
I'll do it when I'm on my break from work. I still need to clock in, actually...
Beef plays Mario now? I wanna see this in action! His Kirby and Lucario are already excellent.
I started practicing with Mario about a week ago, ever since I learned that he's an excellent counter-pick to Ike, GDorf, and the Earthbound kids.

So it looks like Drnick and AmigoOne are the last ones left before the round is over. If you guys think you might need an extension, or if you've already played, make sure to speak before midnight tonight.

EDIT: Bracket is under a spoiler in the second post now. Thanks, evergoo!

Im good to go, but I am going to have to leave in about 2 hours of the time this was posted. And I'll be pretty dang busy for the rest of the day, hopefully DrNick gets on in time.

I'm here, waiting for you... within the 2 hours you said... but i don't see you on-line...

hopefully you come on soon, i have to leave in like 20 minutes

I've had a pretty hectic schedule this week.... more so than usual.

if we can't get together tonight, I'm free right after work tomorrow (5pm est)

Well, I forfeit then. This is becoming more of a hassle than I would ever expect it to be. DrNick can go ahead and move on to round 5.

If blue comes in here and happens to see this: When are you typically available during the week? I'd like to have you sit in on my match with aTOH and record it. Thanks in advance for any response you might give. :)

EDIT: aTOH, when are you available for le match? That's French for 'the match.'

Are you really sure? I can give you two the rest of the day, if you want.

We already had our match. There were problems with the lag so I just started messing around and realized I was using dick moves to win. So ya, I'm ok with it, its too nerve wracking anyway.

well, I appreciate you doing this Amigo, but I'm totally willing to play on sunday as we discussed before. let me know what you want to do

Well, if AmigoOne is deciding to forfeit, then I'm not going to delay the round any longer. I suppose this means Drnick is the winner, and we can move along to the next round. Front page should be updated by the time this is read.

This also means that I am going against Drnick. You'd better say your final goodbyes to "everybody," since you are going down.

haha alright. for the record Amigo and i tried to play on sunday, but we had no success, both of us were online but the other was listed as "offline" we tried rebooting our Wii's and signing back in, with no luck.

hopefully nintendo can fix their shitty servers in time for the next round.

:whistle2:s

What was Amigo talking about, then?

Also, there are no servers to fix. Peer to peer! :)

Nintendo DOES have servers... (when you hit connect to wi-fi, it has to connect to something, right?)

but when you play a game, it hands it off to peer to peer..... but we couldn't even get to that point. so I blame the servers, and nintendo for their shitty rendition of on-line gaming, this friend code nonsense needs to stop.

Ah, I see. Of course that's right. Well, hopefully this is a one-hit wonder. :bouncy:

Okay, aTOH and I had our matches. They were very close, except when he schooled my Zelda with his Ness. Here are the results:

@Battlefield - King Dedede (JoeB1233) d. Ness (aTOH)
@Smashville - King Dedede (JoeB1233) d. R.O.B. (aTOH)
@Yoshi's Island - Ness (aTOH) d. Zelda (JoeB1233)

Winner: JoeB1233

Great games, aTOH, and thanks for being so accomodating!

Well, I guess that's the vice of randomly-seeded tournaments (nothing against the organization - there's no other way of doing it at the outset). Personally, I can think of several players who were eliminated early just because they were pitted against a slightly better player, or luck just was not on their side (Arikado, evergoo, Veronica Mars, maigoyume, yourself). I don't know if there is a way to eliminate this problem. Any suggestions?

That's just the nature of the random seeding beast. I got matched up against Beef in round two... I was hoping I'd see him in the later rounds. He beat me 3-2 and 3-2, so at least we had a solid match out of it.

Here's an update to the bracket, which includes JoeB1233 going to the finals (good luck, Joe).

And to BlueLobstah, JoeB1233, and the other finalist: Do you mind coordinating with one another so that we may see a recorded match of the finals? We all know it'll last >3 minutes and I think a lot of us would love to see the best of the best duke it out.

We could (if time and people permit) do round-robin, and accumulate points with wins. Then after everyone is done, the group with the most wins finish it off tournament style... Sorta like in major league sports. The only problem i see is it is too difficult to have everyone play everyone in a orderly fashion.

Perhaps we could look at this 1st tourney and pre-determine the seeds for all the winners (seeding depends on how far one gets), while the 1st round losers/newcomers can receive the bottom seeds (losers receive lower seeds than newcomers). After determining the numeric seeds of all 64 participants (e.g. 4 #1's, 4 #2's, ...), we would randomize each participant's division placement. All in all, this might make pairings more fair and maybe even allow us to see some upsets.

OR...

we could ignore this idea b/c ppl won't agree to it or there is a better methodology.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: I hope my idea was easy to understand XD

I like the idea of seeding because it reserves the most exciting matches for the very end. I would not be against this at all. My only reservation is that new competitors might be deterred if they're pitted against, say, the previous champion. It's hard to accommodate new players with this set-up.

Another idea is to incorporate KhaosX's idea, and have a round-robin preliminary stage. My thought is we could integrate seedings at that point. So, say, 64 people enter. We could have 16 divisions, each with four people. We could place people in the different divisions according to their seeds (doing our best to avoid high-ranking match-ups). Then, the person with the best record (or the top two people with the best records, depending on what we want) would continue on to a single-elimination bracket. This set-up ensures that everyone plays at least three times, and also reserves the best fights for bracket play.

I'm glad we're already talking about the next tournament! :bouncy: I'm giddy.

EDIT: I realize I read evergoo's idea wrong. Bleh.

I like that idea since it incorporates seeding and makes sure the real winners advance to the next round. Plus it gives people (who would not otherwise advance far) a chance to have more fun in the tourney. The only problem I see is that this tourney method will drag out longer (see #'s below)

Anyways, here are the # of matches it would take to finish a tourney (64-man):

Single-Elimination 63 (32+16+8+4+2+1)
Round-Robin First Round w/ 1 Advancing 79 (6x16+8+4+2+1)
Round-Robin First Round w/ 2 Advancing 95 (6x16+16+8+4+2+1)

Thanks for running the numbers evergoo. :) I guess we can safely say that it probably isn't feasible for us to have two people advance from each division. That, in all likelihood, would take too long to execute.

How do you think we should choose? Maybe we should get the opinion of some of the people around here.

I REALLY like this idea. :)

I think we should go that route, since the first time we were unsure of each person's abilities, but now we know how everyone stacks up and can set the seeds accordingly.

I like everyone's ideas, mainly because I probably wouldn't be behind organizing it. ;)

I'll see if there's a way I can try and record the final match, that is to say if I get there. I still have to face Drnick, and no amount of quips from him shall stop me.

"Inflammable is the same as flammable? What a country!"

I like the seeding idea too. I might be able to lend some time to setting it up (depending on the number of participants).

im in for another, but i have this gut feeling that we wont get all 60ish participants like we did the first time around.

I'm all for another tournament too, but I'd prefer double elimination.

I don't see a problem with round robins considering this is online, and the only time constraints would be self-imposed (as opposed to renting a room for a day in the case of a regular tournament, for example).

Oh. Well, it seems everyone approves of a seeding system.

But what about tournament format? Did we want round-robin preliminaries with bracket finals play (see post #624), single-elimination bracket play (current format), or double-elimination bracket play? Or another format I haven't mentioned? Should we vote on it? How should it be determined?

EDIT: Here's to give everyone an idea of the longevity of each format, assuming 64 competitors (ie number of matches needed for tournament completion, number of guaranteed matches):
Single-Elimination 63 Matches (32+16+8+4+2+1), 1 Guaranteed Match
Double-Elimination 93 Matches WB(32+16+8+4+2+1) LB(8+8+4+4+2+2+1+1), 2 Guaranteed Matches
Round-Robin Prelims 79 Matches (6x16+8+4+2+1), 3 Guaranteed Matches

Thanks to evergoo for most of these numbers!

EDIT2: And this is entirely unrelated, but should we have a consolation match for the current tournament, to determine 3rd and 4th seed? I mean, it's entirely up to aTOH and
???
.

I think we should wait until this tourney is over with and then start gathering interest for a second one. Format could be decided once we get an idea of how many people want to play. With a smaller number, seeding/double elimination/round-robin wouldn't take as long and might run smoother.
