I can't decide if it's comical or horrifying.

Unlike most negative campaign ads, which make things up, take actions/statements out of context, and "spin"(as the vernacular goes), Goldwater was a preemptive war supporter (though we were fighting Communists instead of designated segments of brown people).

So, while this ad may have set the standard for negative campaigning, it stretched the truth of Goldwater's highly aggressive military stance, rather than what we see today.

Of course, you're welcome to disagree. I had to go back and check this ad out, since I have not seen a *SINGLE* political ad this election year that wasn't an attack ad.

I've actually seen a couple of ads here for the incumbent governor that weren't negative, but you're right. If races get close, the negatives come flying.

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's the 40 year difference in time frames, but I don't see that ad as negative. Alarmist, yes, but not negative. It may have set the stage for the years to come (such as comparing your opponent to Pinnochio (complete with animation)), but I can't call that negative in this day and age.

I'm not seeing how it isn't negative; care to elaborate?

In the meantime, I'm gonna keep reloading the Amazon Wii page and see if it comes back in stock.

IMO, it's not negative in the respect that it doesn't attack the opponent directly. I say there's also the difference in what was negative then and now. I'm so used to the ads we have today, that one seems quite sweet in comparison.

I mean, after all, it's got a cute little girl in it. So that appeals to the female crowd. It's also got an explosion, so you got your 18-34 male demo covered. No wonder he won (re)election. Hell....LBJ in 2008!

I disagree; I think the context is lost in 40 years' difference. Goldwater was accused of being a 'warmonger' type character (and, in his speeches, echoed the kind of "let's kill 'em all and let god sort 'em out" kind of mentality). This ad played off of that to the violent extreme: the message is that Goldwater will lead you to a nuclear funeral.

IMO, of course. I wasn't alive for any of that nonsense.

I agree with Cochese, I don't think it's really a "negative" ad. It's doesn't attack any candidate specifically, it's just trying to scare the viewer.
