Something from the 90's that you may or may not remember....

reminds me of when radio was still cool too

Defunkt funks harder than all yall suckas!

Part of the New York 'no wave' scene in the late 70s early 80s.

Here's Defunkt with "Make Them Dance"

Ah, old R&B.

The things I grew up with:

They share elements often. Plus it gives more options for the thread. Like Jamiroquai.

They blend all three together about as well as anyone. Proabably my second favorite group ever.

I like this song. It was made after Aaliyah passed away. A little depressing, but I like it.

Yeah, I picked up one defunkt album and enjoyed it.
I definately don't like much mainstream r&b. most acid jazz is too processed.

As far as 'funk' goes....
Funkadelic. (not parliment or parliment funkadelic)
early to mid period prince is very funky.
some electric jazz bassists have put out very funky records
Stanely Clarke. Jaco. Jamaldeen Tacuma (sp)
names I can't remember now.
Stanton Moore is a very funky drummer.

Liquid Soul's One-Two Punch is a great album.

Also, check out Action Figure Party's self-titled.

That's some great jazz.

I liked the first two liquid soul albums but none after that.
jonas hellborg is another great electric bassist.
I love the sound of a hammond b-3 organ for some slow burning funk.

Another one from the early 90's I liked. Tara Kemp - Hold You Tight.

Scorpio

Gee, I wonder what LL Cool J song uses that beginning as a sample?

I was just never able to get into any jazz or shit like that. The missus loves the genre, but it does nothing for me. Only stuff I can stand is free-jazz and the like.

Son of Theolonious Sphere Monk? I know his son had a career as a jazz drummer. I'll have to watch this later.

Yep.

Classic from the mid-90's.

Hopeless by Dionne Farris. One of my all-time favorite songs.

Studio performance of the same song.
I feel like bringing this back with some classic Jill Scott.

Damn he's going off on those drums. Nice! :)
awesome thread guys. R&B is nothing like it used to be.
Agreed. There is some good stuff now, but it isn't as prevalent as it used to be. Still some good stuff out there though.

Man, I haven't heard that in a long time.

BTW everyone, I love acoustic songs or covers when they are really well done and this duo just blows my mind.

Let's Stay Together - Al Green

Here's some Patrice Rushen I hadn't heard in a long time and I thought I'd share.

"Remind Me"

"Forget Me Nots" (Men in Black fans, this should sound familiar)

That sweet patrice rushen song reminded me of Summer madness from Kool and the Gang

EDIT: I used to cruise around In GTA: SA when this song came on the radio, along with Ice cube's "It was a good day"
Earth.
Wind.
Fire.
Period.
Oh yeah, my favorite band ever.
Old School? This is all the old school you need, suckas.

Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan - "Tell Me Something Good"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3Ld_sLUCUk
Her best song IMO.

BTW, anyone notice anything weird with some of these youtube links?

There's not too much music to fuck to anymore. Why is that? Why's all the songs about how big your wheels on your car are or how many chains are on your neck but nothing like Silk's "Freak Me" where they talk about eatin pussy till you come?

Here is a nice cover of Mary J. Blige's "Real Love" by Toby Lightman.

And here is the original by Mary...

I really like both a great deal.

I'd have to say my favorite groups by a large margin are Earth, Wind and Fire for the old school and Jamiroquai for the new school. It isn't even close for me.

Man, I am so diggin' Sara Bareilles right now. This isn't classic soul, but man her voice is so soulful and her lyrics are amazing.

oh hellz yes!!!

someone FINALLY put this song on youtube (becoz I havent had the album in years and have been dying to hear this song)

coz I dont understand how an argument could make a man

SMACK HIS LADY UP!!!

my two favorite soul albums of the year have been Baby Charles' self titled (my favorite record of the year so far in any genre) and the Diplomats Of Solid Sound Featuring The Diplomettes album

edit: though I do have to say that though I need to give it a few more spins, I'm also digging Soullive's new one as well

edit 2: shit, also forgot about J. Rawls & Middle Child's album for when it comes to R&B. If you dug Fat John's Rebel Clique albums, this is a perfect companion.
