Benjamouth is gonna travel in to the future! (where dentistry takes a turn for the worse) :whee:

Do you still have an accent or are you Americanized?

I still have my English accent, I don't think I'll get an American accent, I think I'm a bit too old to adapt now. English accent is better with the ladies anyway ;)

You're dead on about the dentistry, mind you the only advantage about a UK dentist is that if you're and National Health Service patient they don't want to find anything that they might have to actually treat. So as long as you're teeth are fine you're golden.

Would I need to play the first 2 Yakuza games to enjoy the third? I've heard such good things about the series, but I can't find the first 2 anywhere.
It was strongly hinted at, but never confirmed.

The prologue for The Saboteur was excellent. I don't think I've ever sympathized with a main character nor hated a villian as much as I do with this game.
Is the saboteur the WWII game where you play as a female character in a coma? For some reason I always got the saboteur and velvet assassin (?) mixed up.

No, that's VA. Saboteur's about the Irish racecar driver that goes to Paris to kill a bunch of Nazis in the middle of WWII.
I've played a lot of jRPGs but I don't I ever remember one dealing with kenji, kanji, kendo, or kimonos.

I'm not a fucking xenophobe either.

That being said, GBA Mario and Luigi is great. Love the humor.
Wonder if it gets dumbed down in the DS iterations. Though, I still love corny jokes.
There's nothing "xenophobic" about it - I just don't like it in my games. I don't understand why you'd translate a japanese game into english and then leave a bunch of names in it that don't mean anything to anyone. I hate how persona does that. I have no idea who is who, except by character design.

It'd be the same thing if they all had traditional greek or hebrew or jewish names or something. it's a matter of obstructing a barrier between the audience and your characters that simply doesn't need to be there.

Final Fantasy the crystal bearers looks good though.

Now that was a hilarious post.

fucking Street Fighter with those wacky as hell names. Ryu? Chun Li?

This is America!!!

fucking Super Mario Brothers with those wacky italian names. Mario? Luigi? Those names mean nothing to me.

they should be Mark and Lewis...good american names with meaning.

Seven Samurai Knights, Jer Edition.

I was going to reply to Jer's ridiculous post, but I see you guys have it covered XD.
Persona takes place in Japan. What kinds of names should they have?
Obviously they should have names like Mark, Mary or Brad. They should also throw a black guy in as well to make it feel more American.

I would love to play the hispanic version of Persona 3. Eduardo, Gomez, and Margarita!!

Yakuza 3? Damn, I still haven't played the first two yet. Any chance we'll get a compilation on blu-ray?
:whee:

Better yet, change the race of one of the kids and give him a ballcap so he looks like an authentic black kid.

Maybe the problem goes beyond the names, then? I mean, your average JRPG isn't exactly Seven Samurai. It's probably more a problem of the awful writing and cliched characters - that's probably not helping them stand out at all.

I mean, no game really does a good job of that - that's why they need character designs that are so outlandish and distinctive. All the way back to mario and his mustache and hat, characters have had to use visual marks like Cloud's Hair, and Squall's scar, and Aeris' clothes as a crutch to distinguish their characters and hide what interchangeable cliches they are.

I mean honestly who gives a shit about most games stories anyway.. nobody would be paying any attention to 99% of videogames if they weren't interactive and fun.

But I suppose you folks will continue to just blow what I say out of proportion and have a laugh at it. That works too.

Sweet, change your goalposts.

Of course the problem is beyond mere names and foreign objects.
Writing is a problem with a lot of games, but some people can enjoy them regardless because usually the gamplay is worth it.
So you don't like Persona, who cares, then just say you don't like Persona. Yeah, that happens to be one of the more intimidating RPGs out there because it is so deepy rooted with Japanese culture.
And it's understandable that the PSP version kicked your ass since it is especially archaic.

Stop blasting your dumb stereotypes that aren't even true for anything.

---

I get more excited about Yakuza 3 Mafia 3 Gangs 3 by the minute. Hope Amazon puts an order page up soon.

Lets just ignore the fact that you backpedaled and attempted to change what you said. No one cares if you don't like a character's name. It was the completely stupid reason you gave that made you look like an idiot. "The game's in English, so it should be completely Americanized!"

You must really hate Assassin's Creed 2...

A good story will carry me through awful gameplay.

Yeah, that's a good point - I like Assassin's Creed 2, but that's because it's a fun game.

I don't like the italian names much, because other than leonardo and the main character, i couldn't repeat any of them for you if asked. I would remember associations, but not names. I mean, there's no other real alternative, but it's a combination of those side characters being underdeveloped and also, not real people, that makes them difficult to relate to and difficult to remember. Just like persona.

The thing that also is annoying about AC2 is how they'll drift into italian slang randomly and a lot of it is kinda obscure. Some of it's pretty universal, but a lot isn't. I do like playing that game in italian with the english subtitles though, that's a nice option.

Keep in mind that this is just one of my many problems with JRPGs. Hey, maybe they should give you a choice, if at all possible? Or just original japanese dialog and the option of localized american names in the subtitles. It'd surely increase the appeal of these games at least a little bit.
A good story will carry me through awful gameplay.
Not me. Gamplay is key, if it ain't fun I ain't playing it. Great gameplay and having both great gameplay and a great story is the ideal as it's both fun and sucks me in and keeps me wanting to make time to play it to find out what happens.

Holy crap man, your reasoning is so terrible.
How hard is it really to remember some names? Or learn a little about another culture and era?

How do you read books without a visual aid? Do you even watch foreign movies?

This is the truth. Also it's exactly why I've never finished Half Life 2.

I understand that completely. But if a game has a story that really interests me, I just have to keep playing, no matter how bad it gets.

I haven't gone through the beginning of Persona in several months, but don't you get the chance to change everyone's names or is it just the main character?

 Jer is always so entertaining.

I can't remember all the names I changed in FFVII, but I made...

Cloud - Buzz
Tifa - Loves Buzz
Cait-sith - Marshmellow
Vincent - Sean
Barett - Homer

To be 9 again

Blasphemer!

Mornin' folks. Classes are canceled today here in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Big ass snow storm  This means that today is going to be filled with homework and so much Valkyria Chronicles it isn't even funny.

Complete side note: Lord of the Rings Conquest is simply incredible. It came out in 2009, and it is taking a spot in my top games of '09 list.

Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed 2 remains off of my list of games to check out. I hated the first one. (See? I can contribute to the conversation at hand!)

ACII is amazing! You arent forced to do any of the little repetitive side missions like in the first one. There is so much more shit to do! They have built quite nicely on the story telling, combat, misison options, etc. At the very least rent it. Also, I couldn't stop laughing at
"Itsa Me! Mario!"
I understand that completely. But if a game has a story that really interests me, I just have to keep playing, no matter how bad it gets.
I can see that. I'd just not do it as I don't put much time into gaming these days as is, so I'm not going to waste in on something I'm not enjoying.

Honestly though, I can't think of any game that I thought sucked that had a story anywhere near good enough to keep me playing.

Great stories are rare even in good games, so I can't really think of a crappy game I've played that had a great story. Though the caveat there is I've never been huge into the RPG genre and only played a handfull of AAA RPGs over the years, so that's probably why. As there probably are some crappy playing RPGs that have decent stories out there.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a very good game. I might even go as far as saying that it's the ultimate 2d Mario game. It's still not the best 2d Mario game nor my favorite, but it basically combines almost everything people loved about Mario 3 and Super Mario World into 1 awesome package. Not being able to make a hard save after every level is still a problem, though. Quick saves suck.

I can think of a lot more games with crappy stories and awesome gameplay than I can for games with a great story and shitty gameplay. Hitting the right balance is hard for any game to accomplish. RPGs are just so story-heavy moreso than most other games and its usually easier to see the flaws in them because they rely so much on story. That's what I love about playing any RPG, and the reason story is key to me in a RPG. Whereas in a more action-based game like Assassin's Creed, the story takes a back seat to the gameplay because its not so important.
oh hey look, a bayonetta boss fight that destroys any god of war boss fight. Guess there's one less reason for GOW to exist.

Surely not.
I really want an Assassin's Creed game more focused on Desmond...
I assume that's where the series will end up. For better or worse.

I haven't played AC2 yet so IDK what happens there but I was much more interested in Desmond than Altair. I just wish there had been more actual gameplay involved with Des.

I couldn't be any less interested in Desmond. I was pretty annoyed everytime I had to take control of him in AC2 to do some pointless shit.

Desmond is just a bartender.

Assassin's Creed 3 takes place in Desmond's time, where you have to make mixed drinks at the local bar to gather info, then you stalk and kill your victims after the bar closes.

Wrong. Desmond is really the lead singer of Red Hot Chili Peppers. He kills people at night with his Mr. Socko weapon of doom and then sings with his band during the day.

 I'm so pleased to know I'm not the only person who remembers Mr. Socko

So assuming AC2 is literally 201% better than AC1 then I will maybe rent it.
