Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Bolded for effect.

My discovery list:
Runespell Overture
Really Big Sky
Osmos
VVVVVV

Games I wouldn't have touched had they not been part of a bundle, but have enjoyed quite a lot. I actually like the randomness of the bundles, it's part of the appeal to me :)

I'm agreed with everyone else, as well. I bought the bundle more for Your Doodles are Bugged, Staria, and Zombie Shooter 2. All the rest are just bonuses or gifts for other people.

But how much will you purchase the bundle for if it has all games you like? Every time I see these bundles posted I see people groaning because they like a game or two in it but dislike several others. It would seem the smarter stratagy to do a shooter bundle and then people would be willing to pay a bit for each game vs having people look at it and donate half as much because they would be buying a bunch of stuff they dont want. I know me and most of my friends have given $1-$3 to these bundles when if they just put out stuff we wanted it would gladly be a $5-$10 donation.

I can see where you are coming from and I could totally be wrong...but I still just think its better to make these a bundle of 1 type of game.

How much did you pay though? And how much would you pay if all 5 games were something you really wanted.

If they put 5 shooters in a bundle they get the shooter fans to buy that but they might not buy the next two. If you spread those 5 shooters among three bundles you get those people to buy three bundles. Sure, they may pay the same price for 15 games in three bundles as they would have for 5 games in 1, but there's more to it. In doing so you've also exposed those shooter fans to other games that they wouldn't normally buy and maybe make them a fan of the developer.

I don't like turn-based RPGs. I'm not a fan of the gameplay. However, because Cthulhu Saves the World was in a bundle that I bought I gave it a try. To my surprise I've enjoyed it so far because the writing is entertaining. It's gotten me excited for the upcoming Penny Arcade game that they are doing because I also enjoy those comics. Before playing Cthulhu I probably wouldn't have given much thought to picking up the PA game.

There are a number of other games that I've enjoyed but wouldn't have purchased had they been in a genre exclusive bundle. I don't play many 2D shooters, but I'm happy to try them out when I see one in a bundle. I love adventure games and would jump on an adventure game only bundle in a heartbeat, but I'd rather have one or two and see what other games they come with. It's a great way to get gamers to leave their little boxes that they sometimes keep themselves in. These bundles expose people to something new, and I think that's a big part of it.
May want to post some info on your video card.

Grab the Humble Bundle before it ends in 7 hours either way though. Aquaria and Dungeons of Dredmor are highly recommended and lightweight.

I am on an ancient laptop myself and these are games I enjoy that run well enough on it that I bet will have decent sales by Christmas off the top of my head:

Torchlight
Defense Grid
Terraria
Space Pirates and Zombies
Recettear an item's Shop Tale
All great games. I have them all except for SPAZ, but I really enjoyed the demo. I am hoping it will finally hit 75% during the winter sale.

The whole point of these bundles is to expose people to games they wouldn't normally look at. I think if you make them all one type of game, you are eliminating the discovery element for those who aren't a big fan of that type of game. Plus, I'm not sure having 5 of one type of game is really all that attractive. Too much of a good thing.
Daily Deal:

Orcs Must Die! $3.74 75% off
DLC 75% off as well
Kinda meh since I got it during the Autumn sale, but a great deal for those who missed it.

Yeah, I've played about half of Orcs must Die so far and I would recommend it. Lots of a fun!

I think it's crazy how many of these in-your-face tower dense games have come out lately. Sanctum, Orcs Must Die, Trenched, Dungeon Defender...I'm not complaining, just crazy that everyone seemed to release the same type of game within 6 months of each other.

Midweek Madness

The King Arthur collection $9.99 75% off includes below
King Arthur The Role playing Wargame $4.99 75% off
King Arthur Fallen Champions $2.49 75% off
DLC $0.49-$2.49 each 75% off

I have to agree diversity is why these bundles shine. When you have too many similar goods, they start to cause diminishing marginal returns for each other and may end up being worth less than games that are completely different though perhaps not all as attractive to the buyer.

interesting, another repeat deal from the black friday sale.

Heads up: Out of nowhere, Frozenbyte has announced that Trine 2 is out tomorrow, December 7th.

There's still time to preorder and procure the TF2 hats.
Any opinions on the Orcs Must Die DLC? I got the game at the last sale but not the DLC.
I haven't played the DLC but considering how cheap it is today I'm going to pick it up. That added to the 3 bucks I paid for it during black friday, it only comes to $5 or so anyway.

He did. The AMD A4-3300M APU is a budget APU consisting of a 2-core Athlon II CPU squashed together with a Radeon HD 6480 GPU.

(But yes, I had to look up his specs. ;))

Great for indie gaming, not great for AAA titles. But on a laptop, especially one with a smaller screen (his 13" screen's native resolution is probably 1366x768), indie bundles are a perfect choice. adventure games from Telltale would be a good choice, too.

Older AAA titles work as well. You could also use onlive for some of the more recent items.

I haven't gotten to the additional levels yet, but I used the Artifacts of Power - the new weapons and traps are awesome. I played with them in the game from the outset (I wasn't even aware they were DLC) and find myself using them all the time. The alchemist satchel is just too damn fun.

It looks like GOG is about to have a sale of 50% off just about all of their titles, so you could definitely find some great stuff there.

Also if there are current games you are interested in like Civilization V or Heroes of Might and Magic VI just go back an entry or two and you should be able to run them no problem. Civilization IV is amazing and could occupy your entire vacation.

I'd also recommend trying out the Bastion demo. It seems to have pretty low requirements.

Gah, had no idea there were TF2 hats. And its an awesome pointy wizard hat?!? Just preordered.

The support page says they can expire and will be tied to eligible items. I'm guessing this will be used for promo stuff. For example, you could buy a Steamworks game at retail and in the box is a $5 Steam Coupon good for any item in that publisher's catalog. Or for the next Steam scavenger hunt a prize will be a coupon that has to be used up by the end of the winter sale.

That's probably the most likely guess. Another postulation I've heard is that it's a way to sell TF2 items for cash money ("I'll trade a $75 Steam coupon that I've bought for your Max's Severed Head.")

I'm interested in Orcs Must Die, but there's no way I'd end up playing it before the Christmas sale. And I'm sure that it'll be on sale during that sale for at least 75% off. So I feel like I can safely hold off until then.

I have a question though. As far as anybody knows, does steam ever offer 4-packs of games that are strictly single player? I'm wondering if there's a chance that Orcs Must Die might eventually get bundled in a 4-pack sometime down the line. Participating in a 4-pack buy while a game is 75% off (or more) is where the savings really pile up.

They once did a gift pack sale where they had tons of games in 6-12 packs. It was an isolated event though, and I'd be surprised if they did it again. Your best bet is to just pick it up now, at best you save ~1.50 on the game + dlc.

I've been playing quite a bit of Orcs Must Die. Almost done with War Mage difficulty, I'm on level 22. Great mix of strategy and action, with some personality and just the right amount of difficulty. It allows for many possible play styles. I like to funnel the Orcs, but I have watched a lot of playthroughs where people use more magic. Haven't played the DLC yet.

Im sorry I am lost. When you say inventory, can you please clarify where I find inventory? Is it on the site or steam app? thanks

In the Steam client, click on "Community" - you should now be at your profile blotter. On the right side you should see "View Videos," "View Profile," etc. "View Inventory" is one of those options.

OMD is great fun but for me it got boring exceptionally quick, well before I even cleared the campaign.

I can't fathom any definition that doesn't cast the DLC alchemy weapon as overpowered

Well...I don't like tower defense games but I did love Plants vs. Zombies.
But...I just don't care for tower defense games but I did like the demo for Orcs Must Die.
Nah...I really don't like tower defense games but Orcs Must Die is a daily deal in the Fall Sale.
Fine. Whatever. I can't fucking stand tower defense games but I just bought Orcs Must Die and all the DLC.

So, I'm curious, does anyone in here deal with TF2 items? Like knows what stuff is worth in a trade? I don't play the game anymore and have like 9 items from various promos I was wondering were worth anything to go trade on the Steam trade forum :D

You didn't need the DLC but you'll get your moneys worth all the same. In the same boat as you and I enjoyed OMD up until I stopped. I would just suggest you don't feel you have to clear it out of obligation.

There's some website I saw that lists trade values, historical averages maybe, but I can't recall because I hardly ever play the game. Someone else here might know. I've also seen the odd TF2 item in someone's list in the trading threads.

http://tf2spreadsheet.blogspot.com/ and http://billsandbuds.com/ are both sites that give an estimate of an items value in refined metals, which are worth about $.90 to $1. They're the sites I've used most in getting rid of my items, good luck with the trading. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
