Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I think my thing with the Steam Sale is there really isn't too much I want that isn't $5 or under. I mean quite seriously I own 211 Steam games, and I played all the good big retail ones I wanted this year (except for Space Marine but that is a $10 type of deal).

There just isn't a lot of games that are going to make me say ok that is cheap, I will buy that like the Summer Sale (because I bought them already). Plus god bless these indie bundles. I mean with these indie bundles I am getting games I would of never decided to even try, for next to nothing on Steam. Plus I already own over half of the games with holiday cheevos (or will by the time it's up).

So it's not disappointing for me, I think my Steam collecting is growing to the point where I don't have a lot I want because I have it already.

So, tried to get that Rise of Immortals achievement. I couldn't even play the game 5mins before uninstalling it, I just did not like it (and I like DOTA games).

The dev for The Binding of Issac should be beaten with a spoon. That achievement is freaking lame as can be. I'm glad the game has an achievement for this event cause I would not have played it yet and I really really like the game. I spent like 5 hours playing the game, not even thinking about the achievement but the damn door never showed up once for me after beating a boss...........FU

I agree, I mean I understand why they didn't do a 10 minute Achievement grab but it's like that fucking 3 kings achievement in poker night, complete luck.

I mean at least in Super Meat Boy (Same people I think), those achievements are still hard as balls to do, but you can still do them without having to deal with luck.

Although I still love Binding of Issac.

Just got the Rise of Immortals achievement. Another piece of coal. Now to decide if I want to craft it or keep it. Probably craft it, but eh.

By the way, Rise of Immortals - terrible MOBA. I LOVED Demigod, League of Legends (just played minutes ago), and the originals, but this one? Felt like a mod, more so than DOTA - which is a mod!!

I trust you guys the most to give me the real lowdown on games. What is everyone's thoughts on Cargo and Guardians of Graxia? Both look interesting to me, both have achievements. Anyone played them more than for just the achievement?

Aargh, I hate this Diggle Nog (Dungeons of Dredmore) achievement. I can't find a #@$#@$@$ diggle egg to save my life no matter how many I kill. I have everything else, too.
Ugh and I thought my 50% off Penny Arcade Adventures (which I already own by the way and got on sale at 75% off) was bad.

Crafting is a total waste. Somehow I was under the impression you could pick a prize when you did it. My luck so far with this sale has been total crap so no more wasting perfectly good coal (aka raffle tickets) for me.
If you reeeaaally want to get something for your coal, take it to the Steam Trading forum. People are willing to give up some decent stuff for more "raffle tickets". After seeing how people are buying up coal, I know there is no chance in hell for me to win. Now I'm just trading it off for things I actually want.

The Isaac achievement is only partly luck.

The door shows when you defeat any level other than the Basement while not taking a lot of damage. There is no random chance at the door showing up -- complete the level losing only one (maybe two) hearts at the max and the door will show. If you aren't getting the door to show up, you're getting hit too many times.

Its luck that Krampus appears but he seems to be pretty common... it took me only three doors to get him.

I happened upon Krampus last night and died with him at around 15% health. Imagine my joy when I read this morning that he's needed for an achievement. Joy, I tell you.

Joy.

You can cheat for one of the Super Meatboy achievements, worked for me. Not even going to try the other one. I just got the Cave Story and Audiosurf ones, very easy.

Wow, E.Y.E. is pretty brutal in not explaining anything. Dark Souls to the max, since it has so many more stats/actions...There's gotta be some concise walkthroughs online.

That Audiosurf one drove me nuts at first. I played about ten songs but could not get one white block to save my life. Then I changed the background to black and bang! Done on the next try :p

I'll wait to do Cave Story+ on the designated day, but that's a super cool easy one. I also got And Yet It Moves, Dino D-Day (what a terrible game), Dungeons of Dredmore, Jamestown, and a few others done today, too.

What the hell, does Defcon run in the background? I could've swore I quit it earlier and there was no icon on my taskbar letting me know it was running, yet somehow I put in 11.4 hours of Defcon today.

My Audiosurf bg was black by default, hadn't installed it on this PC yet so I didn't change anything from default settings.

Some other games I own with xmas achievements are jamestown, and yet it moves, and bit trip runner. I don't think I'm going to try for those unless any of the bit trip ones are real easy. Actually the and yet it moves one looks easy but I've never played the game so I don't know.

I only managed to knock out the Defcon, Dungeons of Dredmor, and Polynomial ones today. I was in the midst of doing the Spiral Knights one when I got caught up doing something else. The snow level was never showing up anyway.

I have two coupons: 1 for 50% off L.A. Noire and 1 for 50% off any Valve-produced game. I'm pretty much willing to let them go for anything as I have no use for either. PM me with your offers. :)

I did play the demo of Avadon last night, and while I did kinda like it, I don't know if I like it enough to pay 2.50.

I did work on knocking out some of the future achevements. Finished up Jamestown and worked on Flight Control HD, tho I couldn't get 5 helecopters to land just yet (just three so far before something crashes.)
I'm kinda hoping Sonic Generations gets a deal of $10 or less. ::fingers crossed::
75% off a highly rated new release is doubtful, but Amazon does have it for $14.99.
There's a Half Price Books here with a computer game aisle that looks like a Steam warehouse. Rows and rows of games I never suspected had boxed editions! Get Everyday Genius on DVD-ROM! Sam and Max seasons as far as the eye can see! Red Orchestra! Trine in a box!

I actually bought boxed defcon just because I was impressed it exists, and I already have boxed Uplink.
...I don't think it's steamworks though.
I actually still primarily buy PC games in physical form. I have over 250 Steam games, but I prefer physical copies, because that's the only way I can guarantee I will have access to my games in 10 years. If Steam goes down, they said they would give everyone their game files, but physical format is just what makes me feel more secure. Plus, I like "collecting" physical things. -- I'm the same way with buying CDs and Blu-Ray instead of all digital music & movies.
If you were thinking of getting Nuclear Dawn, you might want to wait:

http://twitter.com/#!/nucleardawn/

It is going to be in an Indie Royale Bundle.
I bought it for $11.99 during the Free Weekend, but I don't regret it. It has a lot of flaws, but I really dig the concept (I actually had the same idea a couple years back before I heard of Nuclear Dawn). Anyway, I'm glad to support the developer with my money...especially so they can afford to make more improvements. :)

Find me in the game as FakeKisser!

Flight Control takes a bit of luck. What I did was to put the choppers near the pads but put them into really small circles over and over. That way they were easier to fly around consistently.

I had that problem with Borderlands without knowing it (Steam still showed me in-game despite the game being closed on my screen and I never noticed) - clocked 75+ hours when in reality it was probably more around 35-40. Only game that did that, though.
Man, people seem to be getting some pretty good games out of these coal crafting sessions. I'm quite jealous, since I don't own most of the games for these challenges, and I don't have the time to attempt them.

As long as there are Daily Deals, I'm quite content.
I have about half the games the challenges are for, but I also don't have the time, either. Oh well. I'm not too upset about it. :p
anyone played/own it?
The Operation Flashpoints are more realistic than Battlefield or Call of Duty. One guy can mess up your world and still be a tiny speck in your field of vision; then account for the fact that they travel in packs. Its much more about strategy and realism than other shooters. The game will test your patience and is by no means a run and gun.

Is the coal crafting worth it? Anyone here get anything good? I hear you can get screwed over with a silly coupon when the 7 coal is obviously worth more in many cases. There's a rumor someone got Skyrim from the crafting too - potential lucky bastard. Hell even Stronghold 3 would throw stars of happy in my eyes.
After uploading a Toki Tori save file, I got coal. Of course. :applause:
CHEATERPANTS!

I think if you upload a save the universe stops you from getting cool things lol

Here's my view on the coal

Sure, you can craft coal into (MAYBE) a good game but each piece of coal gets you one chance to get every single game on Steam.

Now is there any one game we can't buy on Steam? Nope

Is there anyone that can afford to go out right now and buy every single game? Sure but I'm not one of them.

So my policy is let the coal stay and try to win them all, the game that was going to be crafted would probably be added to the backlog and will eventually be 5 dollars on Steam at some point anyhow.

Just did Jamestown achieve and turns out that game is an absolute blast to play. I beat the first stage on divine with the charge ship first try and felt all good lol. Fun game.

I agree with you. I didn't necessarily do anything to earn the achievement. But I really thought these giveaways were more supposed to be about rewarding us for owning the game. Not making us suffer through a game for a difficult achievement.

Well you should also know that on the Steam Trading Forums, there are people accumulating over a hundred pieces already. I'd say don't craft anything but look out for something you definitely want that you can trade for with your coal

Exactly. If anything it should be a quick, satisfying goal that will actually make you want to come back and play the game. I spent an hour and a half ( and eventually gave up) playing Spiral Knights because I kept drawing bad maps that didn't have snow. And now I'll probably never go back and play it. :(

Do this. The going rate for coal is about $.60-$1.00. Grabbed the Introversion Bundle for 3 coal.

I can't argue there, I used a YouTube walkthorugh and holy crap that timing was something.

I love the game, it just gets so hard so fast, the casual cuteness of the game wears off by like the 4th stage

I'm currently playing Psychonauts so I can get both of those
I did work on knocking out some of the future achevements. Finished up Jamestown and worked on Flight Control HD, tho I couldn't get 5 helecopters to land just yet (just three so far before something crashes.)
Don't give up - the incoming aircraft are random! You might not get a helicopter for a few minutes into the game one time and the next you might get two or three in a row from the start.
