Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Just did the Puzzle Agent one, takes two minutes. Which is good because I bought both today.

Besides that, nothing for me because the only games I don't own that are dailies today (minus expansions), are Driver SF and C&C 4 and I am not even touching C&C4 until it reaches $1.50 or less.
Got Universe Sandbox, looks cool.
I'm debating whether to get it or not. It's only $2.50 and it does look pretty interesting.

If anyone's having issues with the Universe Sandbox achievement not unlocking, make sure gravity is at least 1.

I couldn't get the game to run at all until I restarted it in safe mode (there's an expander thing at the bottom when the game crashes, checkbox is in there).
Puzzle Agent 2 for me today. Got the first game in last year's $5 Indie Story Bundle and loved it. Also bit on Xotic for reasons not entirely clear to me.
Same here, loved Puzzle Agent and thought the sequel was too expensive at launch and have been waiting for a sale. Finally it is mine. Also bit on Riddick, though I've passed many times in the past on account of its DRM. I just bought the Riddick collection on blu-ray, hoping to jump into the game once I've finished watching.
The activation code should just be the cd key you get when you buy the game I think then just try and register that on Origin.

Yeah I don't like that email that D2D/GF sent out and that is why I'd like to at least know the game will be available from 2 different sources to download at least. Though I rather use Origin since I have it running for BF3 already.

Thanks in advance, I do appreciate it.
Well I was asking for the example cause I don't want to install Origin. My Saboteur key is 20 characters long in 4 character increments like XXXX-XXXX etc.
does anyone know if I can use a controller for GTA san andreas?
That game has a REAL problem with controllers. The best I've come up with after tons of searching and research is to replace the steam EXE with a version 1.0 or 1.1 EXE and then install this app called SAAC that enables the controller functions in the game. I found the links to that stuff in the steam forums, I could probably pull it together and upload it somewhere if you can't find it. Without those modifications a controller won't work right because the game doesn't allow you to map the D-pad to anything but character movement, among other problems. I think you also have to make your controller emulate a PS2 pad to get it to work...
Just Old World Blues? None of the others are worth playing?

All are worth it if for nothing else than raising the level cap.
I would agree. I thought you only wanted to buy one. Dead Money was repetitive and got boring, Honest Hearts was cool, but pretty quick, no new enemies, Old World Blues is hilarious and there are new enemies with a really interesting setting. Haven't played Lonesome Road.

You guys convinced me I need Puzzle Agent, so it looks like that's my only purchase for today. Good deal on the New Vegas DLC, but I think I'll hold off until I get a chance to play more of the base game.

I enjoyed Old World Blues and Honest Hearts the most. Old World Blues had me laughing during nearly all the character interactions and there seemed to be lots to do. Honest Hearts didn't get very good reviews, but I found it short and sweet. Beautiful setting.

Lonesome Road was incredibly linear, had minimal character interaction and the antagonist would not shut the fuck up and get to the point. I can't put my finger on what was wrong with Dead Money, but I didn't like it that much.

Both Lonesome Road/Dead Money had drab and uninteresting settings.

For what it's worth guys, The Super Meat Boy achievement is stupidly, idiotically, infuriatingly hard. =P Not to bash on anyone's skill here, but it's entirely possible you wouldn't have gotten that achievement anyway.

I'm not trying to say this as a dick. This is coming from someone who has beaten the Light world and gotten through 1/4 - 1/3 of the Dark World levels, and I couldn't beat didn't have the patience for a single one of the Kid X-Mas levels. That said, I never have been particularly known for my patience. =P

Also,
they were hacked..i think http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/1641/itsfinetrustme.png
Uh. . . . yeahhhh. Giving god tier credentials right there in the executable every single user has. Not such a good programming practice. =|
I heard GTA4 runs like shit on pc, even the good ones. Anyone knows if they patched them up?
Yes, patched in April 2010 to fix performance issues, and to make joining the "Rockstar Social Club" optional. It's much, much better now. I actually just completed the main storyline for the first time. Took me about 50 hours, with some side quests and wandering around thrown in. I'm playing with a computer that was state-of-the-art about 3 years ago - 3.2 ghz Phenom II x4, ATI 4850, 8 GB ram, 23" monitor @ 1920x1080. Not a powerhouse by today's standards, but still quite worthy for all but the newest games.

Anyway, it didn't crash a single time on me. And when I let the game determine my video settings, it looks crazy gorgeous. My wife, watching over my shoulder, thought I was watching a movie, not playing a game - the world just looks that good. The people don't look as good, but the cars and the buildings are top notch.

Now, if you turn up the sliders all the way on the graphics settings, it can *still* bring even a new gaming rig to a crawl. So be careful about what you adjust.

Time goes by, all games look better.

Also - GTA4 is best with a controller most of the time, especially driving. But playing on the PC means you can drop the controller and switch to KBM when the firefights get rough. I LOVE THIS. It's so nice not having to deal with the bad auto-aim in the game when you're trying to nail a headshot.

I would vouch for all of the Fallout New Vegas DLC, sure Old World Blues was the most interesting (albeit also by far the oddest piece of DLC in both 3 & NV) however, I think they're all worth playing for the following reasons -

In Dead Money, you get introduced to some interesting characters and while the DLC is linear, it adds some interesting twists and basically becomes a 'Heist' mission that you don't see anywhere else in F:NV.

Honest Hearts was ... honestly, a little boring but you do get a brand new setting, tribals, new (old) enemies and you get to meet with a legendary character from the F:NV mythos ... so worth it there.

Old World Blues is good all around, and actually ties in to Dead Money with one of the characters there.

Finally, Lonesome Road has a character that's mentioned vaguely throughout the entire NV game and adds some closure to that plot line.

The great thing about all the DLC is that it ties in so closely to what was established in ether the vanilla game or the other DLC. In Fallout 3, some of the DLC was hit and miss, but only some of it dealt with the main game, others like Point Lookout were amazing but didn't really tie in to the main story.

All of the DLC here either ties into the main story or it builds on prior DLC entries. For any fan of the Fallout franchise, I would recommend all the DLC ... but then again, if you waited until now to buy everything, you probably aren't a huge fan ;)
lol apparently people can't even attempt the super meat boy achievement right now due to some kind of database error.
More like they put up an unsecure database, someone noted them about it, and then Team Meat responding "Trust me, it's fine". You can guess what happened next
Uh. . . . yeahhhh. Giving god tier credentials right there in the executable every single user has. Not such a good programming practice. =|
Seriously, this was less of a "hack" and more of a "WTF were they thinking?"
More like they put up an unsecure database, someone noted them about it, and then Team Meat responding "Trust me, it's fine". You can guess what happened next
Actually it's not even that the database was unsecure. The problem was that there were god tier credentials (ie full access to all tables it looks like) for logging in right in plain view in the executable itself. The original note (if i understand correctly) is saying "Uh, hey. Do these credentials look familiar? People can see these. Problem."

Honestly, this is the sort of design oversight/mistake that my database professors back at school would have skinned me alive for. D:

THE MORE YOU KNOW!!!

I've found that, with both Team Meat and Jonathan Blow, bravado and overconfidence far outweighs any actual talent and/or technical prowess.

A humble ear would do all of them some good methinks.
2. Is Civ 5 noticeably better than Civ 4? If I didn't really like Civ 4 will I like Civ 5?
You might be an excellent candidate for Civ 5. It's not "better" but it is "different".

What's better?
1. No more "stacks of doom" - the one-combat-unit-per-tile rule brings the combat out into the plains, where it belongs. Cities can now defend themselves, or they are even stronger if you garrison one unit (max!) there.
2. hex tile map instead of squares. Makes a more realistic looking board, and movement is better. No more moving on the diagonals to go faster.
3. Roads cost money to maintain instead of roads bring in revenue. This means you use roads sparingly to connect your empire, instead of laying a massive grid of roads everywhere, uglying up the map, like in Civ 1 - Civ 4.
4. overall, you will be managing fewer units and probably fewer cities because of the way they've changed the rules. I think this is an improvement... a bit less micromanagement.

What's worse?
1. The tech tree is more linear than it was before - less branching off means that everyone is evolving in roughly the same way.
2. The AI isn't as good, although it's improved some through patching.
3. The pacing is off, or at least it was on release. Sometimes you find yourself with simply nothing to do but hunker down and click "next turn" for turn after turn, especially if you're nursing a lead.
4. Multiplayer options are not as varied. They just brought back Pitboss, but there's still no play-by-email option.
5. Computer requirements are VERY HIGH. This game really runs your computer ragged, yet it doesn't look remarkably better than 4. Better, yes, but not an entire 5-year generation leap forward. Gamebryo (Civ 4 engine) really was a great engine.

Anyway, as I said, you might be a good candidate for Civ 5 if you didn't like Civ 4. Many things are better, and it is truly a more streamlined game. I think the early game of Civ 5 plays fantastically -- really feels like exploration and discovery. I miss Civ 4's religion in concept, but I hated religion and corporation in the later games of Civ 4.

Hope this helps.

So what are the odds we'll see Bioshock 1/2 as daylies before this sale is over? I've passed on them in past sales, but I think it's time I upgraded from the console versions & re-played them before Infinite hits. :)
Man, that Civ 5 DLC still seems exorbitantly priced.
Tell me about it. I might nibble off a few at 66% though. I'm tired of waiting, and they've worn me down with repeated 66% off. On the upside, Amazon now stocks the Civ 5 DLC, so maybe we'll get some competition there. Gamersgate has it, too.
Is the Quake Collection worth getting for 7.49 on steam? Quake 1,2,3 and any packs that come with each.
Unless you're a huge fan of classic FPS, Quake Live (which is free) covers the best part of that deal, Q3 multiplayer.

I did the Left 4 Dead 2 achievement and got, as my prize...Left 4 Dead 2. Ok?
Also got Virtua Tennis 4 and 33% off Skyrim from crafting coal.
Noooooooooooooooo!
Sorry you don't approve of my purchase decisions?
I did the Left 4 Dead 2 achievement and got, as my prize...Left 4 Dead 2. Ok?

I got Puzzle Agent for doing the Puzzle Agent 2 achievement today, too.

I think it's intentional.

Yeah that's it. I must of missed the credentials part of the post. I would of been skinned alive too . Sucks that I can't even try for it now.

I view that as more of a character flaw than any type of security misstep given the response.

When someone points out something like that then the proper response is; "Oh shit! Thank you. We're on it." not "It's fine.".

That's some self-absorbed holier-than-thou prickish behavior and the only way to rectify that is with a public shaming which is exactly what ended up happening.

I started college as a physics major, so I think I'll like Universe Sandbox. We'll see later. I also picked up that 3-pack with Toki Tori. Damn achievements.

Man I haven't won ANY games yet, just some coupons and a bunch of coal. Bad thing is out of the coupons only one is a game I don't already have and it's just a generic 33% off Valve published games. Guess I need to start seeing if people want to trade...

And I gotta say, they came out swinging with this sale but it's gotten progressively worse each week IMO. I'd rather they had saved the big guns for the end.

Unbelievably helpful. Thanks for your useful input, gcorlett.
Sorry you don't approve of my purchase decisions?
I picked up Xotic as well and I thought it was pretty fun. Not sure where his reaction is coming from.

I sat down with the laptop to watch some film with the missus, and about the only game i could get to run (which I have an outstanding adcnievement for) is SpaceChem.

I check the forums, there's no quick solution.

I launch the game.

I play the game.

I actually understand what the hell I was doing.

I get the achievement.

Today was a good day :D
Toki Tori really couldn't have used the standard WASD control scheme? This game doesn't feel right with the mouse.
You're really going to hate doing the achievement. It's all about timing and precision. I got more frustrated at that than at the Aaaaaaah! achievement. :(

After trying unsuccessfully to trade my coal for games on the Steam trading forum, I decided to craft what I had this afternoon. After all the horror stories in this thread I was pleased with what I got (had 21 coal to craft):
* Hoard
* Civilization IV (already have it, but can trade it away for something I want)
* 50% off SolSurvivor

Ah well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Added to the 2 games I won and traded away earlier in the sale (Wings of Prey and L4D2, traded them for Renegade Ops and Nuclear Dawn), I am pretty happy with the Gift Pile game.

Yeah, the Team Meat guys are egotistical tools. Many indie devs are once you scratch the surface but those guys are definitely tools among tools.

Quake 4 is pretty decent.

Fallout: New Vegas and all the DLC is super tempting because you can pick up everything that's in the Ultimate Edition for $16.50 (OK, $16.43) NOW or wait until Feb. 7, 2012 and pay $39.99 for the UE. Whut? Granted, it will eventually come down to $10 in a year or two or so like FO3 GOTY did, but why wait if you want it all?

I've got the boxed F:NV CE still sealed up I need to sell.

For 4.99 I grabbed Fallout NV, Red Alert 3 and Riddick: Dark Athena. I was semi-interested in all three for a while and it will give me some stuff to play on my laptop on the road.

To be honest, it is pretty simple until you get to where you are bonding elements together, and even then you can think through it. By that point, the game gets addicting, at least for me.

Did the Puzzle Agent 2 one and now have a total of 3 coal for today.
