Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I don't mean to discount aus_nacht's experience; I take him at his word that he had problems with this game. But I also don't recall a lot of bitching and moaning about Bioshock on the PC; it was a pretty strong port. The graphics are fantastic. The GUI menus are optimized for a controller, though... like when you're changing spells, or biotic effects, whatever they're called in this game. But the actual gameplay is great with a keyboard and mouse.

It played fine for me. At the time my configuration was: Phenom II x4 3.2 ghz; ATI 4850 1GB card. 4 GB memory. On-board sound. I just cranked up the settings and away I went.
Bioshock has lots of problems with Windows 7/Vista. It played fine at the time, now not so much. I tried it a few months ago and couldn't get any sound in game. The solution? Believe it or not, if you plug anything into the mic jack on your computer then you get sound. That's the work around. I didn't believe it until I tried it!
Lol... Again? Damn man, I can't believe how quick that game went down to dirt cheap. Great game, me and my friends are having a great time with the arena DLC content.
Borderlands GOTY has been $7.5 about half-a-dozen times by now. It came out in 2009 so I don't think it went down unusually quick. Take Duke Nukem Forever, now that was a fast drop.

Damn, I just bought it a couple hours ago. I hope I don't run into these problems.
The arena DLC was easily the most mindless. I hated that stuff. :/
It may be mindless, but it's fun played with 3-4 people. I like the firefights. Otherwise, if you play it with 1-2 people it's pretty boring, but it's not really meant to add content. It's more of a way to have some co-op firefight fun. :)

Even if it did come out in 2009, it's only been 2 years since its release (October 2009, it's now October 2011). I would expect it to be around $10-ish for the GOTY, but it's been $7.50 many times before this, which would have made the game less than 2 years old at the time. I would expect the game alone to be $7.50 at this point and the DLC somewhere around $2.50 each on sale. Yes, I know it's been on sale at the $7.50 price point, with a spot in the four pack set at $5.24. Not saying it's a bad thing, but you can agree of course that it is an insanely low price for this game and the amount of content it offers.

Duke's drop was probably mainly due to the lack of sales, because it was a hugely anticipated, but ultimately disappointing to fans despite the time taken on the game. Not a very good example though since it was such a flop and it's from the same publishing company. =P But yes, I can agree that was a VERY quick drop lol.
Bioshock runs perfectly for me and I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit.
I'm not having any real problems with it either on a 64-bit Windows 7 Pro machine. The worst that has happened is the game's paused for a second a couple of times, but other than that it's been running without a hitch.
There is no sound in Ghostbuster's cinematics?

how can i fix this issue?
Maybe this will fix the problem.

I guess I mainly enjoyed the questing aspect mixed in with the shooting. Just plain shooting for no real reason, even with 3-4 people, made me bored. Ah, well, I still stuck through all of Borderlands and Plat'd it on PS3 and got 100% of the trophies on PC. :D Played that game way too much- just waiting on Borderlands 2 to arrive and then drop in price.
Grabbed Ghost Master and Scratches. Might consider finally getting Borderlands later.
Grab Borderlands GOTY if you do want the game. The DLC makes the main game so much more fun. :D

Dammit, I bought the Left 4 Dead bundle and the control pad look/aim is way too sensitive. I can barely play, trying to find out how to alter it in a .cfg file but it's not working. If I can't fix this then I'll kinda regret the purchase. :(

Yeah, you should. It's not there, only mouse sensitivity. Hard to believe, they even have 360 button icons in the game but no controller settings, at least nothing I could find in the menus. Lots of mouse settings.

I bit on Ghostbusters: The Video Game for $2.50! Figure it wouldn't hurt too much at that price?! I should probably turn in my nerd card though; I've only seen bits and pieces of the first Ghostbusters movie and I hardly remember any of it. :X

If you remember a giant marshmallow man, then you know enough (not that I've played the game yet). ;)

Ghostbusters PC doesnt have the multiplayer right? I thought some of the co-op was really fun on console.

It certainly is a great single player experience tho if you are a fan at all.

That's the plan. The actual question is whether I could get my wife to agree to getting it on her account as well so we can play through it together, but with Diablo III on the horizon, other co-op games are going to take the back seat.
If you remember a giant marshmallow man, then you know enough (not that I've played the game yet). ;)
While Sta-Puft does make an early appearance, the element of the movie that the game latches onto the most is the fact that the great evil spirit Gozer was summoned by the architect that built that building. The game also has you exploring both the hotel and the library from the early scenes of the film, but Ray is more than eager to tell you that they've all been to these places before. ;)

You may be able to fine tune that with the config.cfg file in \Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg\.

You have to have the gamepad plugged in BEFORE launching the game.

options -> keyboard/mouse -> enable gamepad

Under enable gamepad is vertical and horizontal sensitivity for gamepad.
I have mine turned almost all the way down.

Yes, briefly, during the Summer sale. Proof. But not for a long duration like this sale.

I had the same experience. After playing Portal 2 with keyboard and mouse, I wanted to see what it was like for the PS3 crowd. So I grabbed the controller. What gordonjones88 says is true - you want to fire up your controller before you start the game. Valve will give you new menu options if it senses the controller at startup.

Once you've fixed the settings and played a level or two with the controller, please promise me you'll try it with a mouse and keyboard. I promise you a much better experience.

That's what I was thinking. Even though I own a retail copy of black, I still want this on Steam for some reason.

I'm sure I had the controller plugged in before I launched the game but I'll try to get it to show what you guys are saying, there must be something I can do to get that to show up now that I know there actually are controller options.

I've tried many games with keyboard/mouse, I don't like it.

Ah damn I was doing it wrong, I had those options all along but since it says "adjust mouse sensitivity" when you highlight those settings and I didn't seem to notice any difference I assumed it was just for the mouse. I just tried those again and did notice the difference. I wish there was a speed in between the two slowest ones though. Thanks guys.

Random question: does everyone else's copy of Civilization IV have 2 entries of each game/expansion? One is for the PC version, one is for the mac version... is everyone's like that? Small grudge, but just curious if anyone else has that problem or if it's just some with me.

Yup...if you're like me and install everything, change the filter in installed games.

Playing PC games with controllers is something that true console gamers do with their PC games. True PC gamers use the mouse and keyboard, that's just what you're supposed to use, it's the natural input medium.

At least PC gamers have a chance to play with their feet. What is one to do with a joystick and a toe? Get a foot cramp? =P

Depends on the game. I consider myself a PC gamer but I'd never play a racing or sports game with KB+M. FPS, otoh, I'd never play with a controller.
Depends on the game. I consider myself a PC gamer but I'd never play a racing or sports game with KB+M. FPS, otoh, I'd never play with a controller.
Yeah, that's understandable though. I don't consider racing/sports games usual games. Those require an attention to the strength of a given command, like a turn for example in a racing game. With a controller you can control the strength of a turn, while you really can't effectively do the same with a keyboard + mouse. While with any other type of game (may be overlooking a couple more exceptions) the keyboard and mouse are much more effective than a controller.

So ultimately, I guess it depends on the type of game. But really, playing an FPS on PC with a controller is a no-no. I guess some people are used to playing with a controller on consoles, but you really don't get the same responsiveness out of a controller. You can easily make a quick turn around with a mouse, while with a controller you have to wait for it to accelerate enough for a turn around ~1 sec usually, which is terrible compared to the equivalent with a keyboard + mouse.

Then there's also the limited amount of buttons on a controller, but that usually doesn't make a difference as controller-enabled games don't usually have that many controls to begin with.

Got me there Gen. Well played. ;)

I think its mostly pc elitism talking with the kb/mouse preference. People should play with what is comfortable to them. I play on my big screen. Most fps games I us kb/mouse but sometimes they feel better with a gamepad, especially if they aren't a twitch gameplay style. Recently portal 2 felt much better with gamepad. Almost all third person games feel floaty and disconnected when I play kb/mouse. It just depends on the game. That being said I don't know how you could play a competitive online shooter with a gamepad.

Agreed, good points. However I wouldn't know the difference since I don't own a gamepad. This is speaking upon past experience I've had with them on consoles. Assuming the control of the camera/view is the same, I hate them with any FPS. But I guess it would be personal preference that decides which to use.
Depends on the game. I consider myself a PC gamer but I'd never play a racing or sports game with KB+M. FPS, otoh, I'd never play with a controller.
Exactly.
Certain things work best w/ certain kind of games, for me.

For example, I play platforming-heavy games like POP series and AC series w/ gamepad.
And I especially play fighters like Street Fighter 4 PC w/ a 360 gamepad.
I normally play racers and sports games w/ a gamepad.

FPS - KB/mouse all the way for me, normally.

I have picked up Ghostbusters and Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodline. I chose Ghostbusters in hope that it is a fun shooting/action game ($2.50 I can't be too wrong, right?).

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodline seems to be recommended by everyone. And I remember back in the days, I was intrigued by the pen-n-paper RPG setting.

BTW, I also bought Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption (2.99), Sanitarium (4.99) and Gabriel Knight 2 (2.99) at GoG.com last night.

Oh, what a horror to my wallet! :)

This. It depends on the game. I am a die hard PC gamer above all else, have been for 20 years or more, and I will say that my wireless 360 pad is the best thing that has happened to my PC gaming in a long time.

When I want to pew pew heads , dive into a strategy game or play something built for M&K, M&K it is.
Playing things like Darksiders or Assassin's Creed feels silly with M&K, so I fire up the 360 pad.
When I want to play some SF4 or an old school arcade style game, I hook up my SF TE stick.
Racing? 360 pad or wheel depending on my mood.

Options are good. Options are smart. I'm not even sure that confining yourself just to M&K could be called elitism... more like being narrow minded. I'm more of a PC elitist in going out of my way to ensure that every single title I am interested in can be played on my glorious, superior platform of choice with the control scheme that I favor most for that particular title.
