Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Hm. I opted in to the new Steam Beta (which allows gift-trading and might be handy since I plan to buy Frozen Synapse), but now when I try to boot up Steam it says "updating" and stays at 0%, then says "Steam unavailable" and "please try again later".

:( I can't even play any games or switch to off-line mode. Haalp!

Edit: Woops! Now it's updating normally. 90%.
I noticed some indie games on sale, like Who's That Flying $2.03. But no mention on the main page.
Should be everything Kalypso published, click on the publisher name (near metacritic score) to see the rest.

Decided to put off E.Y.E til the winter sale and grabbed Deus Ex Human revoltion for $34 from green man gaming instead. Thanks for the feedback.
Bought Puzzler World and the Broken Sword package. I already have the Broken Sword games through GoG with a sale they had once, but having them in my Steam list is so much more convenient. Including the DS version, this marks the third time I've bought Shadow of the Templars without having played it as of yet.
lol - nice. This is the 4th time I have bought it, but I have played it at least. ;P
I tried playing Frozen Synapse but I didn't understand crap. And the tutorial was terrible.
I have to somewhat agree here. A friend gifted this to me during the summer sale and I gave it a try. The tutorial really only gives you a barebones idea of how the controls work and little more. I then proceeded to bang my head against my desk for an hour or two on the first mission, and haven't touched the damn thing since.

You're given rather short range weaponry, meanwhile the CPU can shoot and easily kill your units from across the entire map. Plus the preview function doesn't feel very useful at all when it only shows half of how a turn works (Your unit movement). I'll make these plans/tactics for my squad only to have the CPU completely ignore them, act rather different than predicted, and then gun down guys whom I thought mostly safe. Doesn't really matter how many times you simulate or preview when the most important part of the battle (CPU actions) are still invisible to you prior to acting.

I dunno. Honestly I'm not the best at strategy games, but I'm fairly confident about my intelligence and not being -that- bad at them. Plus giving your team very short range weaponry, and the enemy rather long range weaponry on the first level of a game with an already steep learning curve? Seems like bad design to me.

One of these days I do need to do multiplayer with the buddy who gifted it to me, but I sure as hell am not playing until then. =\

The whole point of the preview is to simulate the actions. Its not going to show you what the CPU is gonna do. But you can give your orders and try to predict what the cpu is gonna do and give the cpu units orders as well and then preview the outcome. The preview function is their to help you simulate what might happen in the circumstances you give it. But ultimately you are guessing as to how the CPU might respond.

Exactly. You have to think ahead and anticipate what your enemies are going to do. It's not a realtime game, like an RTS or something. It's plan and execute. Strategy equivalent of your standard cover shooter. ;)

I bought it and started last night, too. I found the shotguns in the first mission fairly easy to work with because in a standdown, the shotgun always fires first. I lost that first mission too, but won it the 2nd time I played.

What I really disliked about the game is that it doesn't show you your effective range for each weapon type. A little firing radius for each unit when selected would be SO HELPFUL. A game that lets you micromanage everything else but makes you guess how far your shotty will fire? Unforgivable. (IMHO.)

This is a game I was super-excited about, having read about it for the past year during development. I really like the buy-one-get-one pricing model; more games should do this! But I was surprised how bored I was by the whole experience. Losing made me frustrated, but winning didn't particularly make me feel elated.

I especially found the mission where you hunt down unarmed scientists to be extremely distasteful. Mission 3 or 4, I think.

Anyway, you're not alone is disliking it. But if you're struggling, or for people who are interested in buying, I would recommend the "WTF is...?" segment for tips and gameplay footage. That's where I learned that the shotgun is faster than the other weapons. That wasn't really clear in the tutorial.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jJrUY27O0Y

The first level is really easy. You have short range weaponry. They have long. Force them into your range by using the walls and whatnot, or move into their range using them. Machine Gunners are arguably the weakest units in the game.

The meat of the game is really in the MP though.

Just a tip, in modes where you see shadows of units you saw but have since vanished, you can drag and drop them and issue them orders.

If you wish to, you could game out and predict as many scenarios as you want by running your orders against as many fictional enemy orders you can dream up before submitting, this is also useful if your unit predictions keep getting hung up on stationary ghost enemies.

As I said, the whole thing is based on the timers, and the timers are only based on distance and running, walking, or standing still when you start. Crouching, edging around corners, means jack diddly apart from establishing or blocking LOS to start those timers. It is not a game that simulates squad combat that you would expect.

Again, the tutorial is crap. The game is not that complex, a simpleton could teach it, but they have worse than simpletons manning the tutorial.
Counter Strike: Now with 200% more hats!
I wouldn't doubt it, I still think hats are the dumbest things to buy on Steam

I'm really tempted by the Broken Sword pack. The only thing holding me back is that a remastered version of the second game came out earlier this year. It's available on GOG and anyone who bought the original game there was automatically upgraded to the remastered one. I just wish I knew if it was coming to Steam and if they'd do the upgrade automatically if it does. I do notice that there is no regular edition of the first game on Steam, only the director's cut, which makes it seem more likely.

Does anybody have any experience with Who's That Flying?

It's $2 and seems interesting.

I picked it up yesterday and gave it a whirl. It's fun. It's a clever, lighthearted (but tough enough) shooter. Definitely worth the $2 if you have any interest at all in shooting things while scrolling sideways.
Anyone have thoughts on this one? It looks kinda interesting but hard to say.
Been interested in it myself. I haven't played it, but Giant Bomb did a Quick Look if you're looking for a better idea of how it plays.

I got it last winter sale, and it's pretty fun, and definitely a unique and different strategy game because of how resources work. It is kind of simplistic though.

Maybe, but he's so lacking in the dick joke department.

Oddworld games at 50% off (including the Oddbox) are today's special.

Question. Is Stranger's Wrath getting the PS3 HD Content as a patch. I will buy the Oddbox if it is 100% confirmed the PC is because I was planning to buy Stranger's Wrath HD anyway.

I fucking love that game and highly recommend it.

I liked the Frozen Synapse demo, but I'm afraid I'm really horrible at it. I made it through Demo Mission 2 with only one unit remaining (though all the units I was escorting survived). I'm scared to try Demo Mission 3.

Then again, for $6 or whatever (well, $12, but I'm giving an extra copy to a friend or trading it--well, okay, $15 or something cause I want the soundtrack too)--

I realize it's all about the timers and weapon range (someone said above), and timers are the most confusing aspect for me. Rollingskull should make a tutorial!

Edit: Okay, I bought it. If I don't give the extra copy to my friend (if he hates it or something), how do I use this trading feature in the Steam beta? I can't find any functionality anywhere in the menus. Derp. Halp.

Okay, I want to do a bit of advertisement (although I have no stake/relation in what I'm advertising).

There's a great game made by a couple British guys called S.P.A.Z., for Space Pirates and Zombies. I have to admit I dismissed it because of the title, but someone told me it was like Star Control 2 in a lot of ways, and there are just no games like that anymore.

Anyway, I downloaded the demo and loved the hell out of it. They were able to get it approved for Steam, and it'll be available to purchase tomorrow. I'd pre-purchase it right now if I were able. It's got a ton of great buzz.

I'm now going to attempt to link to the demo and embed a video. Wish me luck.

Okay, I have no idea how to embed a video. :(

Sorry, did my best. You should really look into this game, though. I'm glad I did. I played the demo all day yesterday.

I'm playing the Disciples III demo and actually really enjoying it. I haven't finished the Dungeons demo, but it seemed fun to me, surely worth the $10 or whatever.

So I'm thinking of buying both, but there's no way I'll play them anytime soon anyway. Will they be cheaper later? At Christmas? Next year?

Someone convince me one way or the other to buy or wait.

Bought the Broken Sword pack and Puzzler World. I've been getting back into point n' clicks lately. A good portion of my childhood was eaten up trying to get past those freaking poodles in the 1st Monkey Island. lol

Let us know how you like SPAZ then! Or let me know, anyway. I don't remember Star Control 2 all that well. I remember loving it, and I want to get it on GoG.com!

I hope SPAZ gets a lot of good attention. I can't wait to grab it tomorrow.
So.. is it like Star Control 2? I love me some Star Control.
Yup, SPAZ is a lot like Star Control 2. If only it had a thumpy techno soundtrack!

On a totally different topic, where in the heck did Dragon Age 2 go on Steam? I was going to buy that! There's no way I'm buying it from anywhere besides Steam. Crysis 2 is gone as well. Really lame. I hate EA.

Continuing the tantrum of hate, I hate Impulse. It's owned by Gamestop now, so it's totally cool to hate them. Basically, I bought Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights, and all the Icewind Dale stuff, and out of it all, only BG2 and ID2 work. That's it. Bought the Gog.com version of Baldur's Gate (desperate to play it with a friend on holiday), and it works fine.

Frustrating issues with my digital download services. :)

Very beneficial trip to this thread, as usual.

Picking up:

Broken Sword Trilogy - even though I already own them
Who's That Flying - due to discussion from this thread

Downloading demo for possible purchase:

Frozen Synopsis - due to this thread leading me to check out the reviews

Picking up sometime next week:

SPAZ - due to discussion in this thread

3 potential kickass games for cheap that I never would have known about otherwise.

It sounds like you pretty much figured out what happened to DA2. Steam pulled both games after learning that EA would not be making all the content available on Steam. It still works for those that bought it through the system, but you cannot buy it from there any longer.

EA is moving forward with their (IMO crappy) Origin platform and it looks like their games will be available on Steam less and less. It personally does not bother me one bit.

Thanks for the tip on Impulse. I got cold feet on those deals once I saw the system it would be for. I plan on sticking with Steam and GOG for me.

I'm so glad there is interest in SPAZ!! I was warmed by the story of the two developers (two English dudes), and then I played the game, was intrigued, and the further I got, the more I loved it (this is the opposite of my usual experience, where stuff is fun at first then kind of lets you down--this just gets better and better).

Impulse is good for new games, but buying old games on there is a real crap-shoot, and I wish I'd've been more careful instead of wasting money. :( GoG.com is the place to go for the old stuff, and Steam is the place for the new stuff.

(I'm a sucker for a deal, though, so I've got a decent Impulse collection, the majority of which was purchased before the Gamestop buyout.)

EA--Depressing. I really like The Sims Medieval. I have that on Impulse and wish I had it on Steam. Maybe someday they'll have a big Sims Medieval sale on Steam and I can pick it up. Until then, I have to decide if I want the expansion on Impulse. (I don't know why I even like the stupid game, but I really do.)

(More posts today from me than in the entire last year I think. Sorry for the spam, not to be confused with SPAZ, which everyone should demo and hopefully enjoy and purchase tomorrow, because we NEED more games like this in the world.)

So, is Anomaly showing up for $3.33 for everyone else? The original post has been updated recently, but that price has been on there for a while, and I have and still only see it listed for $9.99

Can you guys imagine: Running Steam, Origin, etc etc. 8 different programs for all our games.

What's wrong with that? I didn't need those 300 megs of RAM for my games anyway.
