Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Prototype seems kind of interesting, but $10 for a game that came out in 2007 seems steep unless you're a particular fan of the genre. $3 and I'd buy it. :) Yes, I'm that cheap, but I way too many other games to play.
Don't get me wrong, SPAZ was interesting and I liked the sort of free wheeling, just collect and build mechanics. That losing a ship was scarcely a speed bump so long as you didn't keep losing. The comparisons to SC2 don't seem right to me, as SC2 was massive time management, adventure game style dialogs and fetching, and very arcade, distinct combat... and lousy mining. This is entirely different, something like Space Rangers only in real time with a better focus and less stupid difficulty curve. I don't know.

I got to about working grinding quests/resources in the second quadrant before calling it a night. I liked the ideas and the style, but the interface was still awful in a lot of ways and I was not feeling the combat. Mid combat targeting is still stupid.

Also, I thought overflow crew was supposed to go to your goons stock...
The funny thing is, I can't even disagree with you about any of that, yet I still adore the game. Maybe the difference is that I really enjoy the combat for whatever reason. And you're right, the SC2 comparisons are just surface-level really. And I can't figure the goons thing out either, or I couldn't in the demo at least.

Have you played Starscape? How would it compare to that?

I am debating both Prototype and Front Mission. I had Prototype when it came out but was trumped by inFamous at the time and never finished it. I was hoping for cheaper but do you think $10 is still too steep for such an old game?

Also I have never played Front Mission games but always feel they look somewhat interesting, input?

And yeah dfg is right, we have the request thread people, use it.

I just got Front Mission Evolved for the 360 a little while ago off of eBay for around the same price. I am a little over half way through and can say it's a solid 7 for me. I really like how you can customize your wanzers, which adds a lot of variety. The missions vary from jungle to snow, but your mostly doing the same thing over and over. The environments just seem to be missing life and atmosphere. There are so many things to collect each mission it takes the away the fun, unless you are into all that. Overall, I think it's worth that price, but not much more.

Thank you for the input!

Judging by that description I think I will pass. It seems interesting enough but I have enough games in my backlog that have more 'life' than this game appears to have. I get bored with repetition and if I am playing a dull looking game I get bored even more quickly. You saved me $7.50 this week, thank you haha.

Looking also for section 8, 4 pack(i can get 3 copies or more if u need, just add me).
will be able to paypal(3.85$ for each copy, i will pay the fees) or trade for 1 of the following games:
tfc // hl:eek:posite force // hl:blu shift // HL2 // hl2ep1 // hl2ep2// cogs // puzzler world // ZIRO.
Can also offer tf2 items for it(ex: 2-3 craftable hats)
if u need my rep, check the feedback(only 1 so far on CAG), or

Please make sure im no scammer, i will be able to gift 1st if paypal if nothing raises my suspicion

Your welcome, lol. To me, it's one of those games you would go through because you like the premise of what it's trying to do and not many of those games out there currently. Kind of like Turok or Fracture, they have an interesting element that most games don't have, but that isn't enough to make you want to keep playing, even though they all have multi-player too.
Does anyone have an opinion on the original Section 8 (not prejudice)? It is $2.49 on Direct2Drive right now.

http://www.direct2drive.com/8147/product/Buy-Section-8-Download
Judging purely by the Xbox versions, I would say just spend the little extra and pick up Prejudice and not worry about the first one.

I could be a bit biased however, because the original was released as a full $60 game which I felt was far too overpriced for what it was.
Have you played Starscape? How would it compare to that?
I've only played the Starscape demo, and I like it and will probably buy it eventually if it's on sale, but it seems like a lot of WORK to me. SPAZ doesn't seem like work.

I played through the original and there really wasn't much there, but for $2.49 I think it would be worth that, at least for what I got out of it. Don't expect to be finding anyone online, but you can still play with bots which I enjoyed. The campaign is really just multiplayer style matches. You're far better off getting Prejudice for what it has to offer. The first one I agree, was just way overpriced for what it had to offer.

I'm just going to nitpick here, but Prototype came out in the Summer of 2009. Along with Red Faction: Guerrilla and Infamous. But I agree with the point you're making. It should have been discounted to at most $5 by now.

Er, Prototype came out in 2009. I think $10 is a decent price, though I have it on Xbox already. It's a fun "run all over the place smashing stuff" kind of game.

A heads up since I didn't see it specifically mentioned and it's easy to gloss over on the Steam page: The S8 four-packs come bundled with the DLC, while the single copies do not, making the four-packs an even better deal.

Prototype still having a base price of 30 dollars is hilarious given how so many better and newer games get cheaper. Besides, sequel coming soon, it'll drop.

Thanks for the heads up. I would love to get in on a four pack.

So midweek madness and daily deals aside, Bastion just came out today and From Dust comes out tomorrow! Trying to decide which one to get....

Woops, sorry--I get mine 7s and 9s confused (yes really), re: Prototype release date.

Bastion and From Dust both look really cool! I'll probably be waiting on sales for them both, though. I've spent a ton lately. Unless something is cheapo, I'm not buying anything until Skyrim! (We'll see about that.)
SUPPOSEDLY all copies of SPAZ will activate on Steam, but it's not required. Right now there's a bit of a mess as some of the keys are in Steam's database but some aren't. Since I bought my copy about 5 days ago on Greenman Gaming, mine isn't. But people who bought earlier than me on GMG are.
The SPAZ guys posted a clarification. The Steam activation was meant to be a bonus for people who purchased the beta, so people will need to buy from Steam if they want the game on Steam.

It's not totally clear from the thread, but it sounds like they might be transferring keys to Steam for non-Steam purchases made yesterday, though.

Holy crap, yeah; I thought I was gonna hafta buy the DLC separately. Good eye!

Also, I'm blind because the original is on Steam. But that D2D price is much better...
Will probably get a 4 pack who's interested: as in will actually play the game online?
I'm intrigued by this game but am not 100% sure I'll play online - can I get in on it? :D

I bought a 4-pack and all the DLC. It all came to $19. Daaaang. Any chance I can contact support and get a refund for the extra $3.70 I spent?

Pah, bastards. I just got it on GMG this morning because it was said it still worked on recent purchases.

haha yeah, i'd definitely contact them. i'm sure they'll fix the problem. i totally didn't see the line saying the 4 pack included all DLC either until i came to these forums.

Big fan of Prototype. Semi-sequel to Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. You are an unstoppable force. Only problem is the game needed tightening at the last half. Better enemy variety, less infuriating bosses.
Have you played Starscape? How would it compare to that?
It's close to Starscape in style. Mining, questing, building bigger and better ships, escape the quadrant, repeat. Because it's all procedurally generated and there aren't any "boss" ships at least so far, you don't have that tight gamey arcade action. There's more to do in the space exploration vein (Quests, light faction juggling), the loss of a ship is, again, just something you can keep rolling through, and the pacing is a lot tighter and quicker than Starscape's grinding, researching, and slow war against numbers.

Come to think of it, most of SPAZ seemed procedurally generated which marks a big step away from the games it tries to ape. Maybe a step back depending on how the quality unfolds.

How's Section 8's multiplayer? I seem to remember someone telling me it was dead, but I can't recall if they were talking about S8 or Prejudice.

Does anyone else hate how Bastion doesn't allow you to run diagonally? If I press 'w' and 'd' at the same time, my guy will always bump into the wall or fall off the side. So I have to keep adjusting instead of just running straight down a path. I guess if I had a gamepad it wouldn't be a big deal.

Oh well, the game is pretty cool.

I have played through the game right when it was released on the XBLA and I must admit that it is easily one of my top downloadable titles ever. I am currently running through the New Game + whenever I get a chance to turn on my 360.
How's Section 8's multiplayer? I seem to remember someone telling me it was dead, but I can't recall if they were talking about S8 or Prejudice.
It's not completely dead, but there definitely isn't a lot of people. Maybe a couple of servers full at a time. This sale might help that a bit though.
Any chance on a Bastion sale soon? Or perhaps a four-pack deal?
It certainly could happen earlier, but I'd put money on it going on sale during the X-mas sale steam puts on at the end of the year. I think games that have a 4 pack for sale usually offer that from the beginning and then the price is just discounted when the single edition is also discounted.

Question since I'm new to Steam: Does Steam ever do multi-pack deals for single player games?

We list all of the group buys in the first post. (Without checking) I think they do occasionally offer such things, but not often.
Does anyone else hate how Bastion doesn't allow you to run diagonally? If I press 'w' and 'd' at the same time, my guy will always bump into the wall or fall off the side. So I have to keep adjusting instead of just running straight down a path.
Sounds like a problem with the way the game understands keyboard input instead of a gamepad. The game doesn't read keyboard input as diagonals (W+D=E), it just reads them as a single inputs (W, then D).

It's a common problem with games designed for a console -- I've been having a similar problem with Who's That Flying.
