Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Tried the Aztaka demo. It's definitely pretty, and it's serviceable, but it feels a bit clunky, like one of those old CD-I games. It definitely feels retro. It feels like a game I SHOULD like, but I dunno. I don't really, despite the cool storyline and neat music. Sad. For $3, worth a gamble, but I have so much to play already.

I'm thinking of picking up the entire Warhammer 40k pack since I haven't played any of this series. Is the first Dawn of War worth it, or should I just pick up the second one and its expansions?

Dawn of War 1 might be worth it if you're a Warhammer 40k fan and want extra fluff from the campaign, or if you're a skirmish RTS player since it's much better for comp stomping than 2 (Especially with AI mods). Worth noting that Dawn of War 1's campaigns are pretty bog standard RTS campaigns of the "Computer constantly trickles units at your base" type. Dark Crusade and Soulstorm try to change it with a campaign map but mostly end up playing like loosely connected skirmishes.

To be fair though, considering you can pick up Dawn of War 2, Chaos Rising, and Retribution for $30, and Space Marine for $50, you gotta ask yourself if you want the original Dawn of War and expansions for $20. Retribution's DLC is more like a nice bonus, but it's something you can easily live without. And hell, you only really want/need Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising if you want the campaigns. Retribution has all the DoW2 races in multiplayer and last stand, the only thing DoW2 and CR bring to the table are their campaigns.

Well, the main thing about the backup function in Steam is that it compresses your games. That's also why you need to wait for it. Copying your folders can possibly take up way more space, depending on the game.

agreed
I think I may bite on Aztaka for the Daily Deal at $3.34. This review of the game looks really positive, and it states that the developers of this game cited Metroid as an inspiration. I love the Metroid / Castlevania: Symphony of the Night style games and this is pretty lush looking.

http://www.gamezebo.com/games/aztaka/review
Sounds interesting, but no in game map is a turn off for me. So much that I don't want to buy it.

Aztaka looks pretty bad ass, thanks for the heads up. I am downloading the demo to check it out now.

Just finished Who's That Flying tonight, which I picked up on a recommendation. I know it is not an accomplishment to beat the story mode, as it is not difficult or long, but I don't game as often as I would like. ;)

Anyways, I picked up WTF on recommendations here and wanted to say thank you for that as well. The game was brilliant and the story mode was a perfect intro into the infinite and challenge modes I have now unlocked. I will be spending time improving my skills and times over the years. I am going to check out their first game on the PSP Mini's: Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess. While a different genre, it looks just as good.

Aztaka might be inspired by Castlevania or Metroid, but it's no Castlevania or Metroid. The lack of an in-game map isn't really an issue, but the clunky play control is. I felt like I was playing a computer game from 1992. That's both good and bad; the good is the graphics (which are of course much more high-res than 1992), and the bad is the play control. They should have copied Castlevania/Metroid there. Can you imagine playing Castlevania with a keyboard and mouse? Some games can pull it off really well but not this one.

Sorry for my negative rant. Tired and cranky and my mother showed up unannounced. :) I wanted to like Aztaka, especially for $3 and with it's beautiful graphics and music and neat story, but I just can't imagine spending any length of time with it.

Might be worth it it you have a controller for your PC. I didn't see controller support on the main page, but there are always workarounds.

Good deal. I've still got about 10-15 games from the last two months I haven't touched (from the Steam sale / Humble Bundle) so I'll wait until the next time this comes around, but it's a worthy deal on its own.

I feel like a super cheap ass, if a game on Steam isn't 75% off I'm not interested anymore. Guess I'm just spoiled from all the great deals they have.

I highly recommend Jamestown. The quality there is just very good. Even if you're not a shoot em up fan or pro, the difficulty scales from weak sauce to a brisk challenge quite well.

I know!! I was like "50% off? PFF". Luckily I already have it from I assume the summer sale and probably the same discount. Must have been feeling generous! :)

Naw if a game looks really great, I will often be GENEROUS enough to pay 50%. :) I pay full price if I'm really excited, but that's like twice a year.
I feel like a super cheap ass, if a game on Steam isn't 75% off I'm not interested anymore. Guess I'm just spoiled from all the great deals they have.
I'm the same way, but some of that has to do with being a cheapass, and part of it has to do with me having like 30 games on my Steam backlog. Unless it's such a good deal I can't possibly pass up (hence my back log getting a third longer over the summer), I figure there will be a better deal by the time I get around to being able to play it.

I'm cheap like the rest of you. I want Jamestown and DOW2: gold edition, but my backlog is big and I'm cheap- so I'll wait until they go on sale down the line(hopefully for 67% or more).

First congrats to all those that got one!!! Hopefully some cool stuff can be done with this. I'm already sorta wondering should I have picked one up. But being that I didn't means this was the greatest deal in history!!! Anyway a little humor for those who haven't seen this yet.

Bah I not sure how to post the actual video. Anyway it's funny.

Have a feeling this was meant for the HP Touchpad thread.

I missed out on that Touchpad deal. I need to stop living in this thread- I haven't left since the summer sale started.

I'm the same way. My backlog on could crush an elephant and after the holiday sale I promised myself I would only buy games 75% or more. I have broke the promise twice so far this year. The first time was for VTM Bloodlines since I like many others thought that was the cheapest we would see it and I got burned on that one. Section 8 since it was the game plus DLC for only like 3.33 so it was pretty close to 75% off at least. :)

Even though I really want Jamestown I know it will be cheaper in the future. Unless a game is close to 75% off I'm not biting until the Holiday sales.

Divinity II is on sale for $19.99 on Impulse. :( Darn it. I suppose Steam will have it for that eventually (or less! $20 is only 50% discount!), and I have a huge backlog, but that one really surprised me (demo) and has been on the top of my "to buy" list since. Always ignored it during sales.

Steam, requesting price match!

Divinity II: Dragon Knight Saga (the updated, less buggy version) has been $19.99 a few times on Steam, one of which was a daily deal, so expect it to be $20 again next major sale. I've always been interested, but $20 was too high for me to take a shot when I've been getting amazing games for $10 or less.
Someone needs to update this with Jamestown @ 4.99

THAT, is a DEAL.
It is only $4.99 for a couple more minutes, so probably won't be updated in the thread title. ;P

I did just nab it in time though. Can't wait to give it a spin.

This game is f'n nirvana.

I just recently got into Steam and I was running some price checks on my wishlist and a lot of the ones I wanted all went on sale sometime in July. Did I just miss a major sale? When is the next major sale likely to come?

I am looking for some classics like Bioshock, Half Life Collection, Race 07 and etc. Is it best just to wait?

The big summer sale was at the end of June/early July, which did have sales on those titles. The next one will be the winter sale, but it's possible that those could drop during daily/weekend sales.

Yes, there was a very nice week long Summer sale. I am fairly new to Steam myself, the only other sale I know of is the End of year/christmas sale. Not sure if they will have one before that or not.

Keep in mind they had a fairly big sale last year around Thanksgiving. Also, I would recommend waiting as much as possible. Half life and Bioshock do go on sale quite often and would not be surprised if they dropped very low before the holiday sales start up. Be sure to watch Steam though. A lot of the sales last between 1-3 days and its very easy to miss deals if you don't keep up.

The most cost-effective strategy for Steam is to stock up on awesome games during their 3 big annual sales which run for 10-16 day each and coincide roughly with the US holidays Independence Day (Late June/Early July), Thanksgiving (late Nov), and Christmas/New Years (end of December).

That's why you hear people talking about their "backlogs" here all the time. CAGs go nuts for these sales; we get a ton of games at 50-75% off and then just play them between sales.

So you're 3 months from the next big sale. Find a game or two that will keep you busy for 3 months, then go crazy in November and December.

And welcome to the community!

Agreed with the above. I've been here since Holiday 2009 I think (or maybe Thanksgiving or July of that year I can't remember), and I no longer even bother to do any PC gaming outside of Steam anymore. I was totally against it. Full price for a game and they don't have to ship it, box it, manufacture it, or give me physical media? Why am I paying full price for that? I thought it was madness. But then I saw the sales, and I no longer have any physical games and also have come to highly appreciate the portability and convenience of Steam.

I finally ventured out of this thread, decided to head over to the HP touchpad thread... wow- that places is full of the crazy.

I'd also advise to save around $150+ for the coming sale. There are so many good games for dirt cheap, but it adds up after awhile. I went from 2 Steam game to over 50 after the summer sale.

I never appreciated how great STEAM was until this last summer sale. It's really changed the landscape of gaming for me.

hey everyone, i know this isn't the right thread, but i can't find it...

I'm trying to sell two copies of half life 2 that i have on steam for $2 a piece... can anybody give me the link to the correct forum?

Thanks

Although eventually you'll find you own the majority of what you want, and you'll spend less per sale. New stuff will come out, and you'll kind of wait. It's a balancing act. I suppose I've always spent rather exorbitantly, but when the deals are so good and there are so many great games...!

But yeah eventually you'll have a full wishlist and you'll be waiting on a lot of stuff and enjoying a MASSIVE backlog if you're anything like me.
