Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I'm after a copy of Metro 2033 but don't really fancy playing £4.99 when it's $4.99 or even $2.50.

Is it possible for somebody to gift me a copy? I'm happy to pay through PayPal in whatever currency you need.

PM me if a) it's possible and b) you're a kind enough soul :)

EDIT - Sorted!

add me on Steam, i'll help

So while not a steam game I still wanted to post this. A few pages back we were having a discussion about good Diablo style games to hold us off till Torchlight 2 came out. Seemed that there were really not many that people knew about and there def were not that many on steam. At my topic discussing this over at gamefaqs someone suggested a game called Dims Curse. The reviews for this game that I am finding are very good and it has a lot of unique features like enemies that fight and kill each which lets them level up and ultimately become champions/bosses.

It seems really cool and despite the fact that steam has featured other games from this developer in the past they have turned them down to put Dins Quest on steam multiple times now. The developers recently said they have pretty much just given up and are assuming the game will never come to steam. Given that fact and the interest people showed a page or two back for TL/Diablo style games I figured id post here for those interested. I think I will be picking it up in the next day or two($20 for base game and $10 for Xpack) and giving it a shot. If anyone is interested I can post impressions.

Website for anyone interested. If anyone does play it let me know what they think
Has Metro 2033 ever been this cheap before?
I got it for free when buying some game. Metro 2033 is a good game, I just have too many other games that are better.

Might grab Borderlands since it's only 5 bucks
So a few of you will be happy to know that the canceled third Penny Arcade game is back in development after like a 3 year hiatus. Hothead games who made the first two(as well as Deathspank)is no longer at the helm though, instead the game is being made by Zeboyd Games(the guys that did Breath of Death VII and Cthulu saves the world).

http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2011/082611a.html

Kind of funny timing for me personally since I just beat PA Episode 1 just a few hours ago ;)
Wow, that's actually great news! I love what I've played of the first two and enjoy Hothead, but I ADORE Zeboyd.
Excellent tip. Torchlight didn't impress me but I loved Titans Quest and Diablo 3 still seems so far away. And Grim Dawn has been in Alpha forever. Thanks!
Hopefully you like it, if you do play it let us know what you think. Rock Paper Shotgun actually said they preferred it to Torchlight so thats a good endorsement. I also liked some of the unique ideas like the one I mentioned before and the idea that monsters wander in to town and you have to rush back to defend it, if you take too long they kidnap someone and it starts a new quest which if you take too long to complete the monsters kill them which hurts your rep.
Steel Storm: Burning Retribution for 2.50

(if you havent already got it from HiB3)
Steel Storm is decent but that's about it.

For those who are interested: SS has gamepad support, online multiplayer and the ability to change perspectives on the fly.

Would have loved to snag Metro, but I don't think my computer would have run it that well. Besides with having gotten Deus Ex, going to pre-order space marine my wallet really could do with out it.

Yeah dont know why I didnt grab Metro. O well, grab it again down the line. I did grab CSS and Garrys Mod for 6.24 and Day of Defeat Source for 2.50.
Just announced Borderlands will get a new patch. http://kotaku.com/5835202/new-borderlands-patch-will-test-borderlands-2-tech-adds-steamworks good time to mention since its still discounted. Hopefully the patch is more than just cloud saves and data collection. It'd be nice if they fixed some of the gameplay bugs that still plague the game a couple of years after its release.

Whoever's been adding tons of non-deal information to the OP needs to stop. I appreciate the help, but I do say in the updating instructions that any major changes should be run by me via PM. In other words, please only add deals to the OP - not links to outside sites or FAQ-type info.

Brink, which activates on Steam, is less than $20 on Amazon. I ordered it. I dunno, it looks neat to me. Maybe I'll regret it!

Was also going to grab Hunted, because I thought that was Steamworks (it's under $20 as well), but apparently it's not Steamworks and does not activate on Steam?

(Probably for the best, and maybe it was silly to jump on Brink too. Could probably have gotten them both for $10 at Christmas. I think I get excited when there are deals on retail versions of Steam games, but I really shouldn't.)

There was a Brink free to play weekend just a month or two back. Based on my weekend of playtime I'd say $20 is way too much for that title. I personally wouldn't consider it unless it were less than $5.

The game was decent. Don't let them tell you it's horrible. I feel $20 or below is a perfect price for that game. I paid $60 and definitely regretted it after seeing the amount of content. Other than that though I had a blast with it.
DOTD: Numen: Contest of Heros $2:50
Numen really sucks I STRONGLY recommend against it. Its like Diablo but really shitty. I am pretty sure too the developers stopped supporting it despite some nasty bugs.

Looks like I will wait for Torchlight 2 or play my free PC copy of Dungeon Siege III I got with my GFX Card.

Dungeon Siege III is not a bad game, it's just so fucking bland as hell.

Well if you look a page or two back I suggested a game thats not a steam game but has gotten really good reviews called Dins Curse. Its only $20 and as I said the reviews for it are really solid. I picked a copy up last night and have put a few hours in and I am really enjoying it. The graphics suck and the camera is pulled in a bit to close, but outside that I have major complaints.

I do however have a lot of praise. I have found a lot of items including some set and unique items(the game even has a super unique called "artifacts" and seems like it will be more then par for course on the loot/skill grind angle that make these games so satisfying. In addition it has a lot of cool unique ideas in it. Like for instance even the towns of the games are randomly generated with different quests, different vendors and different goals. Each town has its own dungeon that goes down several floors before encountering the boss you must kill to progress to the next randomly generated town. Monsters in the dungeon fight each other and level up/become unique monsters as they kill each other. There are lots of random events that can occur such as special vendors showing up in town shortly, monsters attacking town(and they can permanently kill people!)and monsters staging revolts against boss monsters in the dungeon.

There are also lots of nice ways to tweek the game. When your town is randomly generated for you, you can first check off a few boxes that can alter the town for you. You can choose the starting level for enemies which can make things much harder or easier, you can decide to gimp all the monsters but gain 15% less experience or you can choose to make all the monsters really tough but there will be fewer monsters in the dungeon. You can also at the very start of the game choose a few permanent options like the typical hardcore mode, but also options that make it so if anyone in town is killed you die too(so you better rsuh back and save them!) or playing as a "noble" who refuses to wear cheap items(you can only equip sets, uniques and artifacts).

I could go on for quite a bit more. The game really does have a lot of unique ideas and overall in the few hours iv put in I would put it on par with Torchlight but below Diablo 2. I just wish Valve wouldn't have rejected the game for a steam release...id have loved to have played with steam friends and achievements.
Granted I haven't played Brink (missed the free weekend), but I don't understand really what the hatred is all about. Just a lack of content?
It's horrible. The gameplay is absolutely atrocious.

Would anyone be interested in gifting me a copy of Bastion, and in return I'll do the same with $15 worth of whatever iOS games you want? I have a lot of iTunes credit that I have little use for.

Tried the Space Marine Demo. I like the game, but when I say like I mean $20 like. It's fun but there is nothing new and fresh that says I must buy it now. It's just a good action game but not unique enough to warrant full price.

Just beat the campaign in Spectromancer. The game encourages you to play multiple times, as there's a card category unique to each game type.

Can't recommend this one enough, especially if you're a fan of Magic: The Gathering.

Does this mean that my retail Borderlands and DLC I bought will be able to be registered on Steam? If so, that would be AMAZING. I hate how the Borderlands DLC is downloaded/handled and knowing I could just use Steam would be a godsend.

They haven't said so, but it the game is fully integrating Steamworks, there's a possibility they could. The only thing holding it back is if the CD keys are incompatible in some fashion.

My problem exactly. I double-dipped during the sale over the weekend, very easy for me to do considering this is my all-time favorite game, and it was only $5.63. =]

As much as I really want Space Marine, i have a gut feeling that it will wind up being 15-20ish come the christmas sale and with my backlog, I'm willing to wait.

still kicking myself for missing metro, but i'm hoping for a sub $5 deal when last light gets closer

What was the deal on Metro? I picked it up from GamersGate for $5, and it was redeemable on Steam.

It was $4.99/£4.99/€2.50 and seemed like one of those "too good to miss" opportunities. I probably won't end up playing it anytime soon but it's nice to know it's there :)

Borderlands GOTY
I had this on the 360 but never really got into it. But on the PC, I'm really enjoying it now. Had a quick group session with some WoW mates earlier (they were completely new to it) and we had a lot of fun. But I have a Q about the DLC...

We've been playing through a lot on the solo side of things, but what happens when we group up? If we have a level 17, a 19, and a 21, won't it be a bit silly playing together with all of our Qs out of sync?

With this in mind, would we be best to just finish the main storyline and tackle one of the DLCs? How have you guys done group questing?

This wasn't a big problem for me and my friend, it just depends on how you feel about replaying a mission you've already played. You may not get credit for it twice, but you can play it again if the person who is hosting the game hasn't played it yet. It sucks a little bit having different levels in the same group, but only because the guns the people who are higher up already have are probably much gnarlier than those that the lower levels have. We'd give eachother guns we don't have use for anymore, but that doesn't feel good to do the entire game. It's best to get your characters up on your own time and then play together, or you can simply use a character leveling program that changes your dude's available stats and level so that you can just have a good time at whatever level you want.

This is the one I used:

When I used it, you couldn't give yourself guns though, which was fine with me.

You won't be out of synch for long. The game has a way of catching people up and evening things out nicely. When I was playing it on Xbox, a buddy of mine started way later (25+ lvls behind), he was caught up in a day.

Just pick someone's campaign and go with it. You might have some missed quests, but those would be easy to go back to when you are leveled.

I also recommend finding a good acid (4x) shotty with a scope. Makes things way easy.

AFAIK the game only takes the host's completed quests into consideration.

The approach our group took was rather simple: we just each made a new character from a class we hadn't played before and would only play that character in our group games. That keeps all the missions in sync and prevents any one character from getting too far out of line with the others. It won't take you very long to get back to the level you're at with your current character.
