Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Lol I wasn't joking. I'll admit that I may have used the word wrong, I already admitted not ever hearing it before just then lol... But what I'm getting at is that this isn't school, no need to use words like that to make yourself look better. I'm 90% sure that isn't in his list of everyday vocab.

As for DPsycho, that was unnecessary, I couldn't care less about what the word means lol... I don't need a lecture on it, I'm not a English major. He should be going to his classmates/work colleagues for that.

Why bring work home?

Also, "jokes bombs"? =P Accept your defeat, good sir!
Yes, I made a typo. That's surely not as bad as misunderstanding or misusing a word!

In all seriousness, you shouldn't get mad at him for correcting you. Whether or not you study English, it doesn't hurt you at all to learn a new word. Why would you want to draw a line in the sand and say, "This is all the English I ever need to know for the rest of my life, and anyone who says otherwise is a jerk!" (But if he was really being mean about the correction it would be a different story.)

Some people really do read a lot or just have large vocabularies. As such, less common words might make it into their communications. While it might be fair to point out that they're being overly formal, there's still nothing wrong with using a word you know - especially if it better represents your idea than a more common word.

As for the deals, let them continue to flow forth. :)

^As an educator, I agree with the educators.

As for Shattered Horizon: "Second Anniversary Sale" I remember when I didn't have the right OS for that one...

Lol some words are better left in the dictionary. No offense, but there are those words that are necessary, and those that are overly complicated. Why can't you just use confused? I don't need those words, I'll forget the word by tomorrow, it's just one of those words that are unnecessary, let's be honest with ourselves. "Try-hards" might wanna learn it, but really it's not necessary.

Definitely agree with you in that there are more complicated words that better communicate a meaning/idea than more common words, but myself I just feel it unnecessary, even when I say them in my everyday talking lol.

Just end it at that. Back to deals, my bad. :applause:

Damn, this thread took a turn for the weird. Who doesn't love the word "obfuscation"? It's a kick-ass word.
This thread is double-plus good.
That is the best possible response to this particular discussion, and I hope you did it intentionally. Bon fucking mot :applause:

Anyways, Shattered Horizon, eh? Worth $5?

It's different, I gave it a shot and liked it. ;)
Yep, dem steam deals!

Shattered Horizon is $5 for some reason, and I still recommend it. Poor thing didn't do so well, but if you're interested in a new FPS experience, it's pretty rad.
How many people play Shattered Horizon? $5 is about my buy it price if I know I will be able to find games.

Just a random guess, but while a sale is not happening... probably anywhere from 6 to say... 24.

During a sale there will probably be a pretty good number of people playing, but I got tired of playing on servers filled with bots and 5 other people while having a ping of 180 because the server was in Europe.

Other than that the game is fun.
The irony is that I remember actually buying the game once I heard it was a Qix clone. I don't understand the obfuscation.
Because tower defense sells I guess. I didn't think it sold enough to make indie devs make play for that dirty dirty TD money but hell, why not?

Lol, I didn't think this would be discussed all night. I'm glad people don't seem to be as agitated now as it seemed originally.

Atreyuevr, I didn't correct you in order to try and pick a fight, and I'm sorry that it was taken that way. Obfuscation and obfuscate are words that I use. As such, I didn't think it was out of place when he wrote it. Depending on the kind of work you do, particularly those that involve public speaking and dealing in information, it's actually a word that comes up often. It's useful because there isn't another word that means quite the same thing.

You later asked:
Why can't you just use confused?
and the reason is that to obfuscate is to intentionally create or allow for a level of confusion or misunderstanding. It's more specific.

Again, I'm sorry if I came off as preachy. I am a teacher myself, so blame that if you wish.

Wow. I'm afraid you're not going to get far objecting when people use words you don't understand, even on a video game forum. "Obfuscate" is not an obscure word, and hal did not use it to belittle you. Instead of being abusive, perhaps you could consider using it as an opportunity to better yourself. Crack open that dictionary, learn a new word, and refrain from pleasantries.

Hal did nothing wrong here, and he should not bear the burden of your shortcomings.

Because that's not what it means. :) If you feel like your vocabulary is inadequate, a good way to remedy that is to look up words when they're unfamiliar and enjoy them. I learned the word "obfuscate" from Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. :)

I think I will pass then. If it had a bigger community I would bite.
Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures $6.80 66% off is the Daily Deal
Well worth the cash!

I bought the series a few months ago direct from Telltale in some sort of huge mega sale (can't remember what) and it was worth the money then, so it is worth the money now.

I *heart* Telltale games!

Not to discourage anyone from buying, but If I can fit it in the Steam Season of Frozen Condensation Yuletide Sale budget, I'm going for the whole Telltale pack this year. Really enjoyed the SBCG4AP series and I'm already a Sam & Max fan. Heard good things about their other series. I'm just not convinced that foray into something like what they're doing with the Jurassic Park franchise is a good idea.
Not to discourage anyone from buying, but If I can fit it in the Steam Season of Frozen Condensation Yuletide Sale budget, I'm going for the whole Telltale pack this year. .
Basically, this. As with any other TallTale Games series on sale, buy it if you have everything else from TellTale as this is a very good price on the individual series. However, if you don't have much in the way of TellTale, just wait for one of the major sales and pick up the TellTale Complete Pack instead, which ends up being an awesome deal.

Don't shun me, but I've never played a Sam & Max game. Will I enjoy most other TellTale games if I absolutely loved Back to the Future? Granted, I'm a huge fan of the movies in that case, but I loved the gameplay as well.

I second everybody saying to wait for the Telltale Pack. I've intentionally withheld myself from purchasing any Telltale games in order to squeeze maximum value out of the complete pack. Furthermore, I see a chance of Jurassic Park being include in the pack as well during Christmas.

The other TellTale games are fairly similar in gameplay. I will say that Back to the Future was probably definitely the most straightforward and simplified version of the TellTale setup. It's a good entry point, I think.

If you liked the game play of BttF, I think it's safe to say you'll like the rest of TellTale's catalog, particularly Sam & Max, if you don't mind things getting a bit more abstract in terms of the puzzles. As long as you don't mind getting truly stumped now and then because the path to solving a puzzle is so extraordinarily ridiculous that it wouldn't occur to a normal person, you'll find plenty to love about the games, particularly in the humor.
Why not call it the Steam Holiday Sale... you know... just like Valve does?
Sorry all didn't mean to start an argument about PC. I call them the solstice sales because they correspond nicely with the solstices. Every 6 months like clockwork.

I never call it the Christmas sale because it always spans both Christmas and New Year's, so I don't like the name. And I don't call it the "Holiday Sale" because that sounds like I'm trying to be all PC. But indeed that is what Valve calls it, you are right. Cheers.
Fortix 2 is a remake of Qix but they bill it as "Fortix 2 is best described as a reverse turret defense game"

This makes me angry.
I think most things make you angry. :bouncy:

It is not a Qix remake, though. There's a bit more to it than Qix. But that's the best place to start when you're describing the gameplay.

You might even refer to it as .... "Qix-otic".
*snort*;)

Amen, bro. Of course we could all speak with just the words we knew in 3rd grade, and try to use them to describe more subtle and complicated shades of meaning than they actually convey.

We could also be playing with rocks and sticks instead of computers. No thanks to both!

I call it the Christmas sale because I don't think New Years should be considered a holiday. Its just another day that people get together and many of them get drunk. If that is holiday than every day (or at least weekend) during college could be considered a holiday...

I would like the Wallace and Gromit pack, but I still have BttF and two episodes of Strong Bad to play. Not to mention other Adventure games. I think I'll wait down the road. Too many Adventure games in my backlog.
I think I will pass then. If it had a bigger community I would bite.
There is a bot mode that they semi-recently patched in. It's not terrible. But yeah, the community didn't last long.
Its just another day that people get together and many of them get drunk.
That is a good description of Christmas, as well.

Also, to those who don't celebrate it, Christmas is much more "just another day" than New Year's Eve/Day.
Also, to those who don't celebrate it, Christmas is much more "just another day" than New Year's Eve/Day.
I would like to add that Christmas can be celebrated by a plethora of ways and the majority don't require any ounce of "religion". I find it funny when people say they don't celebrate Christmas because they aren't christians. All I think is neither do most christians...

While it is true that it would be just another day for people that don't celebrate it you can't deny the significance of it. I mean the 4th of July is primarily just significant to the United States, but if you are say born... not in the United States it doesn't change the fact that the date is still significant... just not to you.

Where as New Years really has no significance, anywhere. Because the day it occurs could be any day.

And, I am just going to stick with video game related posts and comments now... well until something else interesting gets brought up.

I did not mention religion at all. I specifically said "those who don't celebrate [Christmas]".

I also think that my birthday is extremely significant.

The date of Christmas celebration is similarly arbitrary, and in fact, the celebration of the new year on January 1st substantially predates the celebration of Christmas at all.

I agree, and I'm sorry that I have perpetuated this discussion. Very off topic.

I wouldn't say the oldest celebrated holiday has no significance, especially anywhere. Depending on the culture, the new year holiday has many different meanings.

It's "African-American" Friday. Jeez. Some people...
So.. does Steam have a sale for Black Friday?
Yes, and it's usually pretty good, too.

You just had to respond.... And of course it is to the post that I trimmed down because it started getting too ranty. And of course part of what I deleted talks about things you noticed that I left out...
I did not mention religion at all. I specifically said "those who don't celebrate [Christmas]".
I knew that, but when you said what you said, it just made me think of how some people say that and it made me chuckle a little.
I also think that my birthday is extremely significant.
Now I never said it wasn't and this is almost exactly what I am talking about. The reason I am against calling New Years a holiday because the actual day is completely insignificant. The event is significant, I mean the beginning of a new year is great, but when it happens could have been anytime.

The 4th of July or your birthday are holidays because on those specific days in history something occurred for people to remember and create a holiday for. But New Years? No matter the day, the event will always be just as significant. Celebrate 4th of July in November and it loses its luster a little... ok, a lot.

I just feel that for something to be a holiday then something needed to really happen on that specific day for us to create a day of remembrance for it. The actual day of New Years has as much significance as picking a day out of a hat.
The date of Christmas celebration is similarly arbitrary, and in fact, the celebration of the new year on January 1st substantially predates the celebration of Christmas at all.
Now, yes the date of Christmas isn't exact and I would like to point out that I have nothing against the celebration of the New Year. I am just against considering it a holiday.
I agree, and I'm sorry that I have perpetuated this discussion. Very off topic.
Yeah, this one will be my last. I told myself I wouldn't respond, but I had to... I just had to.

And to the person that said Sonic Generations might be 50% on the Christmas sale, isn't there a Thanksgiving sale or am I just making that up?

Oh yeah, I brought it back into video games...
So.. does Steam have a sale for Black Friday?
Sadly yes. I say sadly because every time Steam does a sale our wallets are not safe .

I mean Steam really knows how to take our money. Halloween, then Black Friday then Holiday Sale. That's 3 sales in 3 months. Not good for any of us .

That doesn't make any sense. If you are against considering it a holiday, then that means you are against people celebrating it.

This thread has the reputation of going off topic a lot (myself being one of those initiators). ;)

On the plus side, nice sale on Wallace and Grommit, just added it to my wishlist yesterday. :)

This is true, Kaltic. Who cares if the date chosen for New Year's is arbitrary? All holidays have the meaning we give them. It's the traditions that make them special, not just the number on the calendar.

I hate you guys more than indie games.

Sonic Generations is quite good. I was worried after how awful Sonic Colors was and everyone who still thought Colors wasn't crap thought Generations was great but it's nice to be pleasantly surprised. Generations is worth the $25, I would say. Haven't beaten it yet though but it does appear to be short, heavy on side mission wankery so YMMV, but it appears to be good quality.
