Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I know this is Cheap Ass Gamer, but when I see people moaning that a great game that gives over 40 hours of play time needs to come down from $5 to make it worth their while, I feel like it's turned into Dumb Ass Gamer. Some games want $50 to give you 5 hours of play while Mass Effect gives you 50 hours of play for $5 now. What more does it need to do? Yeeesh. I paid $50 for Fallout 3 and put in over 50 hours and I'm still not done with it, much less any of the DLC. When your dollar-per-hour ratio on a game is more like a dime or quarter, you're getting your money's worth, darn it!

I think ME1 and 2 are EASILY worth the $5.00 they are being sold for each.

I thought ME1 was great and EASILY worth the $20 that I spent for it, back when Best Buy had it on sale in store, some LONG time ago.
About ME2 - was easily worth the $30 that I spent on it, back when not too long after game's release, Amazon had it on sale for that price.

I spent at least 25 hours w/ both of those games each.

Or wanting a lower price, no matter how low the current price, is the only defense we have against the insurmountable backlog.

ME 1 & 2 are easily worth full price @ $60. Buy it at $5, it's a no brainer.

Space Pirates and Zombies is 50% off (so 7.50 ) and it's really worth it at that price. It's a top-down exploration/space shooter where you can customize pretty much every aspect of your ship as you travel through the galaxy.

And considering it was made by two guys who constantly respond to their steam forum about the game, and they made something amazing, 50% off is a pretty good deal. :D
Well, ME1 has never been under $5, so yeah, I think this will be the best price.

I'll vote also that Faerie Solitaire is addictive. That being said, it isn't the most well behaved app. I've played it twice so far and it has hung and crashed Windows Exploder both times. It also occasionally slows down a little bit.

I did try out Orcs Must Die, and while it was enjoyable, I don't see enough value for me to get it right now.
Thanks, I figured this would be the cheapest price. Hope I like ME1 when I get to playing it.

I'm sure ME2 is worth it, but I doubt I will play it for a long time (my backlog plus all the recent releases I want to play). So if there's a chance it would be cheaper, I might as well wait for that sale.

$7.50 is too much. Sounds like a good candidate for 75% off or I will wait for the holiday sale.

This. Fact is, I have more games than I probably can finish in the next couple of years. $5 is a great price, but if I'm not going to play it soon, maybe it is better to have the $5. What it is worth, and what people are willing to pay, are two different things.
Thanks, I figured this would be the cheapest price. Hope I like ME1 when I get to playing it.

But why spend X amount if it may be cheaper by the time you actually get around to playing it?
Do you really think the ME games will get cheaper than $5 a piece?
I seriously don't.
They're both great high-profile and VERY recent games...from Bioware and EA.

Hell, Planescape: Torment costs more on GOG at $10 and worth every damn dollar...and that came out originally in 1999.

Depends on the game. Games like Alpha Protocol when it hit $2, was a great deal and I don't think it will ever get lower for a few years. Same with Mass Effect. Even if you can't get to the game now, I don't think Mass Effect will go any lower than $5 anytime soon.

Indie games usually hit rock bottom prices so I can say yeah wait but when it comes to high retail games like Mass Effect or Alpha Protocol there are times where the deal might be the best all year or even in two years.

I don't know if I speak for most of the people here (doubt it) but anything that requires myself to spend hours and hours and hours of gaming time is not my plans, even GOD SAW AWEZUM Mass Effect 2. I simply don't have the time to play it or "enjoy" it, it's not even worth $5 for me, I wouldn't even accept it from my torrent-friendly friend from university.

And yes that means there is quite the community of gamers out there that have little to no time to get serious with these kinds of games, Skyrim and Fallout included.

Alpha Protocol is a steal at $2.
Hell, I paid $30 not too long after its initial release on sale [at Best Buy] and really liked the game A LOT, despite its shortcomings and all. I thought PC Gamer was one of the few places I could agree w/ on the game, with its review and score.

Indie games usually hit rock bottom prices so I can say yeah wait but when it comes to high retail games like Mass Effect or Alpha Protocol there are times where the deal might be the best all year or even in two years.
Alpha Protocol has hit $2 before....but, that game tanked in the reviews and in sales.
Same really can't be said for ME games.
AP is a lot better than most gave it credit for.

I doubt ME1 and 2 will hit lower than $5. It's worth every penny.
And I'm sure, this deal will get some stoked for the upcoming ME3.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Orcs Must Die on PC vs. XBLA? Which is the better version?

I'd lean toward XBLA if it had multiplayer, but the fact that it's single-player only and $3.74 is making me lean more toward the PC version.

So do I.
My backlog is insane - still doesn't stop me from deals that are THAT cheap, though.

But, really - ME1 and 2 are the kind of games that should be played NOW.
ME2 is my favorite game of 2010 by A MILE.

If someone asked me to define my PC gaming experience, I'd simply say "Steam".

Great sales, where else can you get fun titles for $1-$5?

Grabbed Orcs Must Die! and its DLC for myself and DNF to gift to my brother next month. I promised him I'd watch for it to be hit with a good sale, so... don't anyone tell him. ;)

Most of the games in my wishlist are part of the sale. Going to have to keep a close eye on the dailies.

I'd say "digital PC gaming deals."
Sure, Steam's probably the leader of the pack and where I buy the most.

But, I've bought a ton of stuff from other different digital download places, too - Gamersgate, Direct2Drive, Origin, Amazon download service, GameStop PC App [Impulse], GreenManGaming, etc.

I don't know who your brother is!
And, make sure you don't tell him about this Steam thread here on CAG. :p
do you think orcs must die will be any cheaper during the winter sale?
It's extremely doubtful. It's a newer game, and 75% off at $3.74 is an insanely good price. Get it. Now. Or the terrorists win.

Side note: I just noticed that the Broken Sword triple pack is $2.49. Two dollars and forty-nine cents, people! I thought I got a deal when it was $6-ish in the summer (not that I've played them yet).

I bought a 2nd Xbox for home just to play GTA IV when it came out because I didn't want to have to spend time at my girlfriend's (where I had my 1st Xbox) grinding through that epic. Good call, cuz I spent 60 hours on it, BUT I did it over a span of about two months.

I have such a backlog of games that unless it's a KILLER super-uber-cheap deal, I'm bypassing them now. Rage, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Batman: Arkham City, L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption and I'm sure several more are in no danger of being bought because I know they'll be $5 by the time I'm ready for them. I still haven't finished Arkham Asylum despite having it for two years. I got Dead Space 2 free with my Battlefield 3 pre-order. That's nice, but I haven't finished Dead Space after having bought it either two or three years ago. I bought Metal Gear Solid 4 right after it came out 3-1/2 YEARS AGO for $40, a bargain at the time. I hadn't played the trilogy before it, so I bought the box of PSX/PS2 games for $30 and am currently perhaps a third of the way through the first game. Yes, I totally suck. I'm well aware of it. BTW, MSG4 can be bought for $13.50 used at Gamestop.

My shelves are full of games that I may get to before the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out. Maybe. They had a Lightning Deal at Amazon for the remastered ICO/Shadows of the Colossus for $25 and tossed it in my cart when I realized I'd bought ICO when I got my PS3 FOUR YEARS AGO and, that's right, HADN'T FINISHED IT!!! I let it go for someone on the Wait List. Other than BF3 and MW3, the only new game coming that I'm going to get is Mass Effect 3. I just need to eat what's in the fridge already, so to speak.

I understand waiting for better deals when you've got a backlog, but sometimes I think people are just being stupid about being "cheap".

/sermon
The light, you have seen it.

Had that revelation years ago, I now have a backlog of exactly 1.5 games, 1 being Orcs Must Die which is still downloading and Skyrim, which I am playing.

It is far cheaper to do it this way.
anyone have iBomber defense?? It's $2... thinking of buying it, but would like to know if anyone has actually played it.
I played the demo. It's ok. It seems to be a pretty simplistic and average tower defense game, at least for the demo section. If you've already played through the better ones (Defense Grid, especially), I suppose it'd tide you over. If you haven't played Defense Grid, buy that instead when you see it on a daily.

I'm shocked that the Dejobaan Collection is only 50% off. I mean, I don't understand why anyone would buy it at even $10 dollars. From what I've played of those games 3 of them are nearly the same game.

Thanks for that bit of info. I'll hold off and see if it comes up as a daily. If not, i'll just buy on the last day. At worst, maybe i'll just buy during the xmas/winter sale.

Gah, that Renegade Ops is tempting, but no!

I'm also surprised at the Dejobaan collection. That seems a $5 pack at best.

Might as well argue no one should read books that you can't finish in under two or three hours. Or any other hobby or project for that matter.

I actually don't do any activity that lasts longer than 5 minutes - I just don't have the time for it. Fortunately, typing this post took less than five minutes.

Yeah, if a test takes longer than 4 minutes, I just rip it up and leave. Just can't stand 5 minutes of doing anything.

I agree with the reply you got above regarding iBomber. It's an iPhone game (hence the name iBomber) and it's very simplistic. If you haven't already played Defense Grid - get that. If you have and are just looking for a new TD game, iBomber is ok as long as you know what you're getting.

Basically, you have a map on which are placed a limited number of hex grids. There are typically several predetermined routes that the land, sea, and air vehicles take through the maps and everything comes in waves. You can upgrade your towers during the game (to the extent to which you've upgraded them with the points you earned on the previous map) as you earn cash for destroying vehicles. In other words, your basic TD.

It looks pleasant enough, as production values are good but it's pretty simplistic in its approach.

Just tried Sequence.

Imagine DDR but having to watch 3 screens of DDR and constantly switch back between each screen. Basically you have one screen to attack the enemy, one to defend against enemies attacks, and one screen that is constantly flowing notes to recharge your mana.

So you attack, do the notes required for the attack and then recharge your mana while switching to the defense screen to do the pattern to make sure you take no damage.

The game is simplified to one hub overworld where you basically choose battle, gear, etc so there really isn't much to do besides battle/grind stuff to make new weapons and armor.

Overall it's different but unique. If you like DDR and RPG's it's worth checking out for the $2.50 or lower if it hits a daily.

I'm still considering getting the deluxe edition of ME2 because of the soundtrack. I'm a sucker for game soundtracks. How good is the version included with the deluxe edition?

I've only spend $0.24 cents so far. I was very tempted about ME2 but I'm still holding out hope for a "complete" or GOTY edition with all DLC included. -_-
Impulse is going to have Civilization V on sale for 7.50 tommorow (thursday). It's a Steamworks game, and the best price I've seen it at.
Good catch. Civ 5 is a Steamworks game, so it's relevant to this thread.

It's on sale now. Civ 5 for $7.49: http://www.impulsedriven.com/civ5

Unfortunately, no Civ 5 DLC on Impulse. Still, this is a sick deal.

A side effect of the Indie bundles is that I'm now hesitant to buy any Indie title directly from Steam, because I expect it to show up in a future bundle. That plus the grotesque size of my backlog means I'm gonna pass on Orcs and possibly even Limbo, or at least de-prioritize them in my budget.

I bought OMD, but I too have that hesitation on indie games. I would not be surprised at all if OMD showed up in the next royal bundle. But screw it, the game looks like it's worth the $5 investment(got all the dlc too).

Anyone know if the Unreal Deal pack (UT, UT2004, UT3, Unreal 1 + 2, currently $9.99 down from $39.99) will go any lower? I love UT + UT2004 (lol @ no UT2003) and would love to have them on Steam.

I feel the exact same way. I still did pull the trigger on Orcs Must Die though. Since I did I completely expect it to show up in the next indie bundle. I doubt I'm going to end up getting much because of that fact since most of the stuff on my wishlist are indie titles.

That's strange. My husband logged onto my Steam account last night from his computer, and it seems all of my categories are gone and all games are unsorted. Major bummer. :(

I don't recall that particular pack being lower. That's two singleplayer games and three multiplayer games for ten bucks! The custom user-made content alone would keep you busy for months.

Remember, UT2004 had all of the UT2003 content (except maybe a map or two) contained within its package. The gameplay was tweaked, of course, but the content is there as a bonus.

This happened to me about a month ago :(. I was reading on the Steam Forums that it isn't uncommon for multicomputer and/or multiuser accounts. They had some suggestions to fix it but none of them worked for me. I don't understand why steam doesn't have an option to auto categorize or at least select multiples. It really has no thought put into library management. I never recategorized my stuff. There is no way I am clicking each individual game and moving them again, all 400 or so.

On a side note, I broke down and bought Renegade Ops. Also, broke down and bought Saints Row 3 from a mom and pop shop who offered me a discount to buy multiple copies (selling the extras).

While I only have a little over 100 games, the idea of doing this category reorganization thing regularly isn't so cool. Guess I'm leaving things unsorted, too.

Yep, happened to me and I re-sorted. A week later it happened AGAIN and I just said screw it.
